Good Morning all. After three doses of chemotherapy I am learning a bit. The first infusion yielded minor side effects. The chemo stays working in the old body as the second dose is dripped in. More side effects and weakness. Then along came the third dose. I named it Apollo 11 because I landed on the moon. I did not hit a golf ball though, and I have a blood draw today to hopefully tell me that things are working. Happy major league baseball season everyone !

Good morning!

Saw all the Bs, but failed to look at the letter following them. D'oh. Still it was nice to cruise to victory sans Wite-Out. Learning moments: Uno requires a game box, and forgot that O-J was an athlete -- only recognized him from the trial and that Airplane movie. Thanx for the diversion, Chris, and for the cheery expo, Boomer. (Hoping you get that lowered PSA result from the blood test.)

MSDOS -- I still miss it. It was fast and compact and didn't require a mouse. Multiple programs could fit on a single 100k diskette. But Windoze won the day.

PINE TREES -- You're right, Boomer, no leaves to rake. But those pesky pine needles fall everywhere, stopping up rain gutters and require raking on the lawn. You can't leaf-blow 'em. The trees do grow fast. We've got a "volunteer" out front that's only a few years old, but is pushing 30 feet. These are Loblolly Pines, not the Christmas tree variety. We originally had five 100+ footers out front. Only one remains, like the one in that photo.

FIR, but erased hmo for HOA (because decaf) and weevel for WEEVIL (because dumbass). No real unknowns, but ELSE seems more likely to mean "otherwise" instead of "in addition".

Tonight's the big game. I mentioned before March Madness started that Kentucky's problem was consistency. Yup. In spite of beating finalists North Carolina by 29 and Kansas by 18 in the regular season, they fell to 15-seed St. Peters. I may be the only member of Big Blue Nation who wasn't surprised. Congratulations to the Gamecocks of South Carolina for winning the women's national championship.

When LEON Spinks' name would come up on TV, my dad would quip "He does? Guess he needs a shower." (I won't tell you his response to hearing about Roosevelt Leaks.)

I have never played UNO. I progressed from war to go fish to blackjack to hearts to rook to euchre. I was supposed to take to bridge, but didn't really get into it.

Windows 3 required MS DOS to be loaded first.

The Norfolk Admirals are in the East Coast Hockey League, hockey's AA baseball equivalent.

Thanks to Chris for the fun, easy Monday puzzle, and to Boomer for the PUNishment.

A Monday FIR to continue a new streak. It was perfect until the SE corner when I blithely filled ALIve, certain it was right. It took a bit before I realized my mistake, wrote ALIBI, and could finish TEARY and ESSES. Two WOs but FIR in the end. Yay!

Thanks, Chris, for a classic puzzle using a progressive vowel change in the themers. After the first two, I expected a B and B theme but BILL NYE ended that.
And Boomer, you did a fine job with the review. We are all thinking of you today. Fingers crossed for a good test result.

I learned about Uno from our grandson since it wasn't popular yet when our children were growing up.

Hope you all have a great week!

Took 4:56 to finish today. Spelling weevil was the trickiest part for me (after changing "bed" to "pad"), and couldn't think of Corel, though the perps filled it in for me.

This was a Monday quick run - like ATL granny I thought it was going to be two words both beginning with B and B after the first two theme answers, but BZZT on that. Took me a minute to see the B_LL in all the vowel progression.

Only other do-over was having STOWAWAY before EBBS made it change to STOWABLE

Thanks Boomer for the amusing blog - hope the numbers are obedient today and to Chris for the amusing puzzle

Manic Monday. Thanks for the fun, Chris and Boomer (hope the lab results are encouraging).
I FIRed in good time and saw the theme (hand up for thinking at first that it was a double B theme).

I know it is Monday, but let me beat Irish Miss in pointing out the 24 three-letter fills, plus five three-letter words pluralized with an S or ES. Plus there were several other longer fills that had an added S.

STOWABLE and COMELIEST elicited a “really!”.
I agree with Jinx about clue for ELSE.

I noted HOA and BOA. PUB/ALE and ETO / IKE were already noted by Boomer.
COREL, MS DOS and MALWARE make an interesting combo.
REGAL/EMPIRES reminds me of the controversy re William and Kate’s recent Caribbean Royal tour.
I have played UNO for years. It can go on for hours if you have a large group and great rivalry.

Wishing you all a great day.

Good Morning:

It’s been awhile since we’ve had this type of theme but it’s simplicity is perfect for a Monday. Hand up for thinking B and B was a developing theme. My only w/o was Royal/Regal and the only unknown was Corel. Aside from the numerous (25) three letter words, I enjoyed the mini theme of Corel/MS DOS/Malware/Net, a big CSO to all of our Nerds, plus all of the fun pairings: Ike/ETO, Pub/Ale, Ball/Net, Emo/Ito, Uke/Ike, Ito/ETO, Alp/Ale, Bistro/Pub, Boa/HOA, Regal/Empires, and Boa/Lei. CSO to MalMan (Malware), and DO and dear Spitz (USN).

Thanks, Chris, for an easy start to the week and thanks, Boomer, for your irrepressible humor and wit. Good luck with your test results.

It’s very sunny at the moment but the forecast calls for a wet week. Those April showers that bring May flowers, I guess.

Have a great day.

Hi All!

A few bumps in the road but an easy solve to ease in the work-week. Thanks Chris.

Boomer - phun expo and flights of fancies (connecting RUE to Golden Girls - Priceless).
I'm looking forward to good news re: your PSA blood work.
Your Twins got a good deal on Correa; he's at least a 4&1/2-tool player. Let's see how well he plays w/o Altuve. //those two seemed to communicate w/o a word.

WOs: RoyAL, eTO, WEEVeL, aLSo->ELSE (Hi UncleFred!)
ESPs: N/A
Fav: ODE TO Joy [flash mob]

EDWARDS AFB - I did a consulting gig at the Borax steams' power-plant nearby. I missed a Shuttle landing by one day(!) but I got to meet some mission control guys from JSC at the PUB. Great stories.

FLN - {A, B}; I love been burritos; WC - Foundation: Psychohistory seems prescient ;-)
CED - want something cool to read? SALT. As Spock would say, "Facinating."

Windows 3.0. My first "my" computer (386 DX) came with it. I uninstalled it and loaded MS DOS. "If I wanted a Mac, I would have bought a Mac" I told anyone who'd listen :-) #HiMem

Anyone else remember WordPerfect's markup language to get complex math formulas in your document? This was b/f WYSIWYG [what you see is what you get].
WC - you get the Gold-Star for calling out the inferiority of M$'s cruft.

{B+, B+}

UNO is passé. Kids these days love Exploding Kittens. //It's a never-ending game. I played w/ Youngest during the Texas Big Freeze. Not as much fun as Cards against Humanity.

Xfinity is supposed to send a guy out today. AT&T is laying fibre [just for you C, Eh!] and I think the line was cut. 'Cuz we oft WFH [work from home], we have both [Comcast & ATT] for Internet so we're never off-line if one service dropps.

MALWARE? - Oy! I should get back to work. Play later.

Cheers, -T

I'm afraid I did not understand your reference of "landed on the moon."
I am not sure if this is a good, or a bad reference...

I think I did understand the golf ball reference though.

My sincerest wish for you,

And that the TSA allows you to not only bring a golf ball and club,
But a bowling ball and nine pins...

Delightful Monday puzzle, many thanks, Chris. And thanks for your always neat commentary, Boomer, including crazy pictures, like the one for RUE. Hope you get good results on your tests.

Always enjoy seeing BILL NYE, the Science Guy, in puzzles.

Haven't seen Judge ITO for a while.

We got to go to the PUB right on top, but didn't get any ALE until way down at the bottom.

Don't think I've ever seen or heard the word COMELIEST for most attractive.

Have a great week coming up, everybody.

Jinx in Norfolk said...

-T, why did you have to reload MSDOS? Windows 3.0 just ran over it. IIRC, if Windows wasn't in your autoexec.bat, it wouldn't even autostart. I remember being mad because I had to buy the new version of MS DOS (4?) before I could install Windows 3.1. And I only needed 3.1 because I had just purchased Visio (before MS bought it), and it wouldn't run on Win 3.0.

The first word processor I remember using was Word Perfect. By the time I returned to school t6o get my MBA I had switched to Lotus Symphony. I still have all my files (that pursuit was VERY writing-intensive), but I don't know if there is any way to convert them. Not that anyone would care what I wrote 30+ years ago.

CrossEyedDave Thank you for asking about our SALT Cave. Yes, that reference you found indeed explains it! It is a human creation. But quite a unique one!

Wilbur Charles, Lucina Thank you for the kind words about my SALT Cave photo and about us!

Wilbur Charles Way interesting that you taught French! I just got a reply from my friend Irene in France regarding Tante Nique. She validated my interpretation. But I also replied with your interpretation. I will be curious what she says!

Hola!

If I seem a bit cranky today, I apologize. It's because the puzzle page in the newspaper was rearranged from its previous format which was nearly perfect. Why they had to do that I don't know but I intend to inform them of my displeasure.

The puzzle, however, was just fine. Thank you, Chris Sablich and Boomer! Boomer, your witty commentary made up for the puzzle page fiasco. Well, fiasco might be a bit harsh.

When I travel I am often astounded by what some people carry on to the plane. Some really push the boundaries of what is allowed. My own sentiment has evolved to "the less carried, the better."

My heart still does a double take at the mention of IDRIS ELBA. What a hunk!

Last night we celebrated my granddaughter's 19th birthday at the Olive Garden. Prior to that they had all gone to the Cat Cafe which I declined. I just can't imagine eating with cats crawling all around. My daughter said there were about twenty of them. The birthday girl loves cats and received many cat-themed gifts.

Boomer, good luck with all your treatments.

Have a magical Monday, everyone!

Thank you Chris Sablich for a relatively nice and easy Monday puzzle. I feel engergized !

Thank you Boomer for your charming blog review. I hope your third time at chemo is the charm, and everything works out Ok. Your pain and trials and tribulations are so heart wrenching. I hope your ordeal ends soon.

I had no real problems with the puzzle and a few write overs, .... stowaway to STOWABLE etc. Pine trees may not drop leaves in the fall, but their needle like leaves, drop all the time, and can make a mess in our back yard.

Husker Gary, the McDonalds menu in Mexico, shows prices are still a bargain compared to the US ... probably reflects the relative costs of living. You can't get a tripple burger in the US for 3 dollars.

The fact that the mexicans use the $ sign would be very confusing to american tourists... the mexicans could, and should have made a new logo .... like MP or PM to denote Mexican Pesos.

The Indian Rupee has a logo of an sanskrit letter R with a horizontal slash through it ,..... to distinguish it from the rupees and rupiahs in Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Maldive Islands, Mauritius, Indonesia etc.

Have a nice day, you all.

I take it back about the ELSE cluing. For the most part I still agree with Picard, Jinx, and others that the cluing is, well, awkward.

BUT sometimes ELSE does occur "In addition."
Like when you're compiling a list of groceries, or of somebody's character flaws, and you seem to have reached the end.
You may still be scratching your head, wondering "What ELSE?" meaning "What have I left out--in addition!?"
