Aside from the weird
name “Gugu” I didn’t have too much trouble with C.C.’s puzzle, and thought maybe this would have worked well as yesterday’s offering. Anyway, FIR, so I’m happy.

Good morning!

Deja vu...methinks we saw this writeup briefly Sunday morning. Zip, zip, done. No Wite-Out required. JAVA: I've been to Jakarta several times. The city is sinking, and as a result the capital is moving NE to a spot in Borneo. Thanx, C.C. and Hahtoolah. (The Metro Gnome was cute.)

Jinx in Norfolk said...

FIR, but baa->MAA , ocho->OTTO, whoa->WHOO, and sorta->KINDA. The theme saved me from guessing @ DEREK HOUGH x GUGU.

There's a difference between a momma goat and a momma sheep. Momma goats are "does" and say "MAA," while momma sheep are "ewes" and say "BAA."

AREA rug. Noun.
1. When used in a senior citizen's home, a device installed to stimulate business for orthopedic surgeons and morticians.

Can't say this was my favorite CC offering. Far too many unknown (to me) A&E names, and no baseball references. But I did enjoy Ha2la's tour, as usual. My Zoё used to stretch out in several separate efforts like that cat. Now that she's 12, she just stretches out her front end and calls it good enough.

FIR. Well, we have circles and a bunch of obscure proper names. How wonderful! NOT!
Sorry CC but this puzzle just doesn't cut it for me.
It started out somewhat easy at the top, but as I proceeded down it got knottier. The good part was that the perps were there when needed.
Overall not an enjoyable puzzle.

Good Morning:

Perhaps if we thought of circles as training wheels for newbies and inexperienced solvers, we’d be more accepting of their presence. They provide guidance, confidence, and success to budding crossword enthusiasts, a win-win proposition. Most of us don’t need them but that’s no reason to deprive the beginners of their assistance.

I enjoyed CC’s offering and, with the exception of the strange Gugu, there were no unknowns and no stumbling blocks. The grid was clean and the cute theme was well-executed, IMO. As Subgenius noted, it very well could have been in yesterday’s slot.

Thanks, CC, and thanks, Hahtoolah , for the commentary and the cute comics, particularly the “Trapper” rug, the circles-less Racoon, and the pacifist canine vs the hawkish feline.

Go Yankees!

Have a great day.

CAme in just over 4 minutes (4:02) today to finiSH.

The Actress of the Day was completely unknown (Gugu?), as was the Actor (Cole). I didn't know the Italian math (otto - where's a Simpson's bus driver when you need him?), the Chinese daddy (baba), or the Sheepese (maa and/or baa).

Oh joy, circles!

This was a fairly speedy run - felt faster than Monday this week. Theme answers were not only slang for MONEY but also all food!
GUGU has been excellent in everything she has been in. She is very versatile from being Judge Ravonna Renslayer in the Avenger spin-off "Loki" to award winning portrayals of Ophelia in "Hamlet" on Broadway with Jude Law in the starring role

We took our kids on a trip that they called the "Civil/Civil"trip - through the Deep South - everything we toured had to do with either the Civil War or the Civil Rights movement. One of those stops was SELMA, AL and the Edmund Pettus Bridge

Thanks Hatoolah for the fun blog and cartoons and CC for the puzzle!

Hola! I had trouble in the COG/GUGU area when I filled CAM instead and have not heard of GUGU. But most of the rest I could finish. However, not being a fan of Dancing with the Stars, DEREK HOUGH was perped all the way.
Thank you, Susan, for naming all those cities; BATON ROUGE is the only one I know and luckily it fit.
I know of only one person who had to ANNUL his marriage.
Have a beautiful day, eveyone!

My Late Husband used to call me a “Cheap Date” because I absolutely loved Wendy’s .99-cent Chili plus a Free Senior Drink. Those were good old days.

Musings
-DEREK HOUGH and GUGU will not remain in my ever-shrinking memory but had to be used. COLE, OTOH, has lots of nice alternatives.
-DON’T BE THAT GUY: Taking forever at the drive-thru at the pharmacy while there is a long line
-Golfers know Gary Player is known as the BLACK KNIGHT. Non-golfers probably don’t care.
-TIP: This happened in Omaha on Sunday.
Omaha — A 30-year-old Texas Roadhouse server was arrested Saturday night after what police described as a “gratuity dispute that erupted into violence.”
Witnesses say the server had been handling a table of four whose bill came to $128, including multiple steak dinners and drinks. When the group left only $2 on the table, she allegedly confronted them at their booth, shouting, “That doesn’t even cover the butter for your rolls!”
Police say she then grabbed a basket of peanuts and hurled it across the table, scattering shells everywhere. When one of the diners tried to leave, she shoved him back into the booth and demanded a proper tip before letting them go.
She was arrested on charges of assault and disorderly conduct.
The restaurant reopened after the arrest, but staff told local reporters they had to comp several nearby tables whose meals were “ruined by flying peanuts and screaming.”

With significant perp help I was able to FIR in 12:37. Unknowns included COLE, BABA, KOAN, and ARO (we’ve had it many times but not with that clue). The reveal got me DEREK HOUGH, which also gave me GUGU and WHOO (haven’t seen that, usually it’s whee). I’ve always liked AC⚡️DC, about as raw as rock and roll gets, power chords, screeching lead guitar, screaming out the lyrics, never did see them in concert though. Thanks Zhouqin for the puzzle, I also did yours yesterday in USA Today, you are definitely one of the more prolific constructors. Hahtoolah ~ thanks for another fine expo, always enjoy your graphics!

For a while there I was afraid I would have to take a DNF, but I persevered. Not knowing DEREK HOUGH was my hold up. Also didn’t know ARIE, COLE, GUGU and ARIE. ATARI was all perps.

Like Jinx, this was not my favorite CC puzzle.

HG. That was quite a story about the diners at Texas Roadhouse. I can imagine a waitress getting fed up.

Thank you Hahtoolah for the fun cartoons like the raccoon without the dark circles and the cat reading The Art of War.

Just one ARIE, sorry.

Enjoyable Tuesday, the hard names were last to fall, but they were perpable...

Now, what to do with all that money...

A pleasant Tuesday puzzle, all in all. And thank you, C.C., for all of the fun and informative visuals!

Irish Miss said...

HG, the best part of the story is the flying peanuts! I’m still chuckling!

No problems with this fun puzzle. I knew all the names except for "Gugu". Circles weren't needed but I like the extra aspect of the puzzle. I always enjoy the cartoons Hahtoolah.

Much nicer puzzle than yesterday, despite HOUGH/GUGU. Enjoyed the recap, Ha2la. Great 'toons today!

A pleasant puzzle.
A few too many abbreviations.
Derek Hough is presently a judge on Dancing With The stars. My wife and I still enjoy watching the amazing dancers.

A clever theme, which I first thought was gonna be a recipe, but too many names: 15. Only DNK 3, but that included DEREKHOUGH which intersected ARIE, GUGU and CHROME, two of which I DNK. I figured it must be an "E" in DEREK, and by then I had figured out the CW theme was about money, not a recipe, so the "U" emerged from DOUGH. Overall, not not favorite CC CW, but not a bad CW. I had fun, so.... Thanx CC. Thanx too to Hahtoolah for the fun write up and, as always, great cartoons. I especially liked the dog and cat cartoon: how true! I did manage to FIR in 10, only W/O: WHEW/WHOO. I never heard of WHOO, but never knew there were CTOs either. CEO, COO, CFO, now CTO. Add on the BOD and we have too many high paid executives siphoning money away from my dividends!

Life is full of ironies! There is a half-page story about DEREK HOUGH in another part of the newspaper! Not only does it mention his role in "Dancing with the Stars" but quotes him as saying, "I'm not that GUY" about not sharing inside news. If his name had not been in today's puzzle I likely would not have even noticed.

Monkey said...

Wow! I love coincidences like that. It proves the universe is inscrutable.

Had way before GUY. I don’t get the “/ace” in the clue for ARO.

Prof, I believe it means Asexual.
