I wasn’t familiar with a
“sand dab” or that a “dab” was a dance move. Other than that, I didn’t have too much trouble with this fun puzzle.
FIR, so I’m happy.
First, it is with great sadness that I must report that my wife passed this morning at about 1:00. She was comfortable, and surrounded by loved ones, including both her children. I thank all of you who helped make this difficult time less so, including CC's lovely note in her write-up.
As for the puzzle, I FIW. I was sure that rETAINS was the word I needed, even though I couldn't figure out how BEr related to kings and queens. Figured it was one of the many three-letter acronyms those Brits use, like HMS and OBE. I also missed with DYNiST. It may come as a surprise to some that I occasionally have trouble with speling.
Thanks to Marc for providing a good distraction from my sorrow, and to CC for your review, and especially for your kind words. (My favorite REMIX is Natalie Cole's remix of her father's famous hit Unforgettable, which is especially poignant for me today.
Condolences to you and your family Jinx, happy that she passed peacefully among all her loved ones.
Sorry to hear that your wife has died. Alzheimer's must be the cruelest disease. It robs a person of their very essence. I'm heartened to know that the great weight has been lifted, and you'll be able to pick up the pieces of your life.
What Subgenius said.
Jinx, sincere condolences on your heartbreaking loss.
Good Morning:
Even though this type of theme is not a favorite, I thought it was executed well and that much of the fill and cluing were above average for a Sunday. Learning that it was a debut makes it even more impressive. I had no problems with the solve and any unknowns were taken care of by the helpful perps.
Thanks, Marc, and congrats on a fine debut and thanks, CC, for guiding us along. I, too, love the Clecho clues.
Have a great day.
CEh, sorry for the outcome of the Series but your team did their best and they certainly didn’t make it easy for the mighty Dodgers. Any Series that goes 7 games is exciting and proves the teams are well-matched.
Very sorry to hear that Jinx. Deepest condolences. My MIL suffered from that in her later years, and it's a very tough thing to go through.
Deepest condolences, Jinx. An end, and a new beginning.
Condolences, Jinx. There’s comfort that you were surrounded by loved ones. You might be prepared for the loss, but when it happens it is heartbreaking.
FIW, although I yenned and pined for a FIR. Done in by my lack of Spanish skills. HABLA was obvious after the fact but I was stuck on RED for king and queen. My mind kept going to PARLA, but CPASTE of course made no sense, and that frankly wasn’t a very good clue for CHASTE anyway. Also had a brain mis-alignment at RANDB (completely missed the R&B possibility).
Having had a long history of being told: “Hmmm, we better have some tests run on that” --- only to be told “Don’t know what’s causing it but we know what it isn’t,” I now proudly call myself an idiopath.
Not a fan of the theme, but I didn't hate it either...after the pattern became obvious the subsequent themers were much too easy to fill after revealing just a few letters.
The rest of the puzzle gets an A+ from me. Lots of straightforward cluing mixed with the perfect amount of cleverness, and not an OREO to be found!
And, best of all, no (is there an official term for these) conversational phrases in quotation marks.
Excellent puzzle.
R.I.P.
This puzzle gave me a run for my money, and a lot of learning moments.
but it won't last long...
Dab for instance: I don't dance, you can't make me...
Well, DW might, at weddings, toss me an appetizer and a free beer at a wedding if you want to see me dance...
Sand for angling is a real stretch too: I may not be into dancing, but if you talk about sand fleas...
(I can post many vids on catching and using sand fleas, but this is an upon request kind of thing,) sorta like dancing if you ask me...
Continued...
FIR. My condolences to Jinx on your loss.
There were several things about this puzzle that "puzzled" me. Illini as an example. I still don't get it. And like SubG, I've never heard of dab as a dance move, or whatever.
But the theme i got early on and that helped a great deal with the solve. Last to fall was the top center. I just couldn't remember Puck's restaurant for the life of me. Fortunately when the going got tough, the perps were kind.
So overall a very enjoyable puzzle.
Jinx, I am so very sorry for your loss. What a blessing to have family by your sides at the end of this long goodbye.
Haribo? (Spell check doesn't like it either) a German confectionery. Who knew?
(Must go back and look at the grid, this is an esp - Every Single Perp)
Argot?
People also ask
What is an example of an argot?
AI Overview
Examples of argot include the slang used by a specific social group, such as "piker" or "ringer" at a racetrack, or the specialized language of the medical profession like "jargon" for specialized terms. Other examples include the argot of social media, which may be used for private communication, and historical examples like the secret language of thieves or tramps.
Poetry,,,snap,,, Thumper...
Pinhole: the first example is the easiest for DIY'ers
Pinhole: (take two) there IS a tape for that!
It's just not code, or permanent. But for my aging garden hose, this looks like a great option until I can get a new one...
And finally, remix: my fav? I can't choose one, there are so many. But, this is what I was listening to just yesterday.
Hazy shade of winter a Simon and Garfunkel song, great harmonies, but then The Bangles blew it out of the water...
Speaking of the Bangles, (not a remix, but) I went to listen to Going Down To Liverpool again. I've seen/listened to this many times, but when I went to look again, I found this never seen (by me) video of Leonard Nimoy acting as the Bangles chauffeur while they sing. I was blown away!
My name for them is "paraphrase non-clues".
Fighting Illini is the long-standing nickname of the University of Illinois (Big Ten Conference member) sports teams.
"Dab" is a dance move wherein one appears to kiss his or her own bicep. I only became aware if this when 49er QB Colin Kaepernick would do it after scoring a TD.
If he had devoted as much time to studying his playbook as diligently as he did his performative affectations he might have been more than a one-trick pony NFL novelty act.
I'm familiar with Haribo only because their gummy bears are staged above the Red Vines at my local Target.
Lurker Pete
Sorry for your loss Jinx
Peace be with you

-I looked at SANDDAB DAB a long time but it had to be. I think others might not have known the fish or the dance.
-The dances I knew are not new but are more than 50 years old
-A meal at SPAGO can cost between $100 to much more per person
-I was surprised to see CHANEL bags going for only around $30 on Amazon
-SCAR/SCAB paired with R AND B was a speed bump
-I’ll bet you know this rendition of Bella NOTTE
-I snickered at “Blessed event/SNEEZE” and Sleepy as a proper noun and not an adjective
-After a prolonged mission, an astronaut’s legs can be very unsteady upon their return to TERRA FIRMA
-The Athletics progressed from Philadelphia to KC to Oakland and now Vegas

-LA Dodger catcher Will Smith’s homerun broke the TIE in extra innings (OT) last night. I was rooting for Toronto.
-So sorry for your loss, Jinx.
Trial
10:42. Way too easy and not entertaining in the slightest. The theme is so weak I'm not sure how this got published.
I lost two posts. Trial above seems to work. ??
Had to make a couple changes when perps didn’t concur, spumonis became SHERBETS, and cover became REMIX. Other than that, only a few unknowns solved by perps allowed for a FIR time of 23:27, ERIC, CHANEL, NOTTE, and DEPP (didn’t know Johnny had an actress daughter). Thanks Marc for the enjoyable exercise, and congrats on your debut puzzle! Also to C.C. for your recap.
I'm not feeling well. Maybe I made an error in posting I will wait to try again.
I only knew HARIBO from seeing the commercials where the adults talk in little kids voices. Not the kind of gummies I’m fond of though.
FIR, but didn’t enjoy the theme. I was expecting, and maybe that was asking too much, more common dance names. Except for TWIST, by the, way nice clue, and HUSTLE, I didn’t recognize the dance names, so I thought I was doing something wrong.
Except for ONO, I wasn’t familiar with the proper names, but perps helped.
Thanks CC for the review.
Re: sherbet, I was looking for how Curly pronounces Champagne,
but all I could find was this...
Sorry for your sad news Jinx. Now on with remorse and recovery. All the best from another Virginian. As for the puzzle I thought it was pretty easy but fun. I had never heard of "dab" or "sand" for angling. I had also never heard of "argot". Thanks for the recap CC.
Jinx, my sincere condolences. Requiescat in pace.
Jinx and I were alike on the BER (BED) as I had RETAINS before an ABC run finally changed it to DETAINS. The double-DIP puzzle was easier than the usual Sunday fare, but the DAB-DAB took perps. I had never heard of the dance and had no idea what DAB and fishing had to do with each other.
But I FIW. I didn't know if my would remnant was a SCAR or SCAB. I have not a clue about H.E.R. and I guessed SCAB and a Bed AND Breakfast (BANDB) instead of Rhythm AND Blues (RANDB).
NOTTE- never seen that one. All I knew was SERA. HARIBO, DEPP, TESSA, Joined that unknown group.
SOVEREIGN- 16oz Ag or .2354 oz of Au? Give the the gold. $772 vs $944.75 it you melt if.
DW always complains there very few good restaurants on our side of the river across from NOLA. A friend told her about two in Algiers. While were eating this morning at a normally priced local, she looked them up. Their Sunday Brunches start at $50. No thanks.
I don't know if it helps you, but I do know what you have gone through and will be going through. Please accept my condolences.
I liked this puzzle.
Jinx, my sincere condolences.
Delightful Sunday puzzle, Marc--many thanks for this gift. And, C.C., your Sunday commentaries and pictures are always a pleasure for us, so many thanks for those too. Finally, what sad news we received from you, Jinx. Our hearts go out to you, and we pray you will receive help and comfort during this difficult time.
Well, it was kind to see a puzzle beginning with a reference to PATS, as in the sense of comforting touches when one needs them. It was especially helpful to think of them as a comfort for those with SCARS and other injuries. But then we went on to start thinking about babies with BABY BUMPS and older children like TEENAGERS who may also need MAXI care for health problems and injuries, and who might need to see a MEDIC. Hopefully we can give the teenagers much help when they are well, maybe taking them to the gym for some ATHLETICS, and later to plays at the ARENAS, and out to get some sandwiches and SHERBETS afterwards. On another day maybe they could take an art class, and try painting interesting pictures on EASELS. That could be a lovely experience for them.
Enjoy a lovely Sunday, everybody.
Jinx, what a godsend you have been to your DW and her children. Wishing you peace on the path ahead.
I liked this puzzle. The duplicate dance steps helped a lot in the solve. Thanks, Marc, and thanks to C.C. for this space and for explaining the tough bits.
Works for me!
Jinx- sincere sympathy to you and the family in this “second” loss (the first being when she no longer remembered you). Sometimes the first loss can be devastating, but the second loss can be a relief, although still heart-breaking. You are in our thoughts and prayers.
Thanks IM. The series could have gone either way several times over the 7 games, and even in that final 11th inning. We are proud of our team, and send congratulations to the Dodgers.
I was asked “does idiopathic mean I am an idiot?” I replied “No, it is a fancy Latin-based word meaning They don’t have a clue what caused it”.
Super Sunday. Thanks for the fun, Marc and C.C.
I FIRed online and saw the repetitive theme. Not familiar with SAND DAB.
Hand up for wanting perps to decide between SCAb and SCAR, and then still scratching my head.
I didn’t know ILLINI either but it perped.
I wasn’t sure I wanted to think about ant MLB baseball when Yogi Berra and the ATHLETICS appeared, after our Blue Jays heartbreaking World Series loss in the 11th inning last night. (See my comment to IM).
But we did have some soccer with OLE and NIL.
Wishing you all a good evening.
I look at comments on Sundays, but not part of the community that you share, but I am sorry, Jinx, for your loss to this terrible disease.
