I thought this puzzle
had significantly more crunch to it than the usual Tuesday puzzle. However, I had a pretty good idea about the theme early on which definitely helped me solve it.
Anyway, FIR, so I’m happy.

Good morning!

"Rubbish BIN" sounds distinctively British to my midwestern ears. We say "garbage can." When I learned that musical mnemonic as a wee lad, it was "Every Good Boy Does Fine." Interesting puzzle, Rena. Enjoyed your tour of the bagels, Hahtoolah.

It was a fun puzzle. When I would travel for work, I’d go to Dunkin’ for a toasted bagel with a strawberry smear for breakfast, yum. I didn’t know acappella had two P’s in it.

Neither did I.

Yes, I never heard the F in the staff lines EGBDF to be Football. Empty Garbage Before Dad Flips - or the trash BIN!

I noticed the circles on the way to completion but didn't bother to notice the flavors until after BAGEL SLICER was filled. LISA was an unknown and I guessed B for the cross of unknowns ABA and NABOO due to the judge's 'gavel' in the clue.

EGBDF- I've heard 'Every Good Boy Does Fine' or Every Good Bird Does Fly' for the lines on the treble clef but the Fudge and Football are new to me.

FIW, missing with KELsE. Kinda a tough cross with the totally unknown (to me) HIIT. I also thought that this one was tough for an early-week puzzle.

Red-blooded 'Mericans usually say "trash can" or "garbage can," but anglophiles like Patti lean toward "rubbish BIN." We Yanks think a BIN is where we put our recyclables.

I loved the interaction LISA and Hugh in House.

Off to vote. Only one item on the ballot - gerrymandering. Currently Virginia's contingent in the US House consists of 6 Democrats and 5 Republicans, roughly the split of voters in the Commonwealth. The issue is whether districts should be redrawn into 10 Democrat districts and 1 Republican district in response to gerrymandering in other states. Doesn't directly matter to me - I hope to be voting in Florida before the November elections anyway, but I was raised to exercise my right to vote at every opportunity. (Besides, I need a new "I voted" sticker for Zoё's collar.)

Thanks to Rena and Ha2la for the fun challenge. My favorite in both the puzzle and write-up was "fall faller" for leaf, and the legacy diving scoring of the falling feller.

Agree that Rena's puzzle was a bit sticky for a Tuesday, but I enjoyed the theme. Who doesn't like BAGELS?

Since South Florida is considered NYC's 6th borough, it's easy to find great bagels down here. My favorite topping is a schmear with lox, a once-in-a-while treat because smoked salmon is so expensive.

FYI if you live in a bagel desert, try Ray’s Frozen New York Bagels from your supermarket. Best off the shelf alternative.

Edgar Allan POE briefly attended my alma mater, the University of Virginia. His room (#13!) is maintained as it was in 1826.

Thanks, Hahtoolah, for the infotaining review!

FIR. I'm never excited to see circles and today was no exception. And they really weren't needed for the solve. The theme added nothing.
I too found today's presentation a little crunchy given it's Tuesday. And a few answers seemed a bit of a stretch.
So overall not an enjoyable puzzle.

Yellowrocks said...

A little crunchy for a Tuesday. Almost successful, but I skipped one cell and forgot to go back to it. I liked the theme.
For many years the only bagels I ever had were artisan New York bagels made at local shops. They were boiled and immediately baked on site. Yummy with smoked salmon, a schmear of cream cheese, onion, and capers. Then I tried supermarket bagels. Ugh! What a disappointment. Dunkin's bagels are frozen, shipped and then baked. Still not pleased, so different in taste and texture. It is like instant coffee compared to brewed coffee. Now I eat only the artisan ones, even if I have to wait to go to the shop.

Well this puzzle was humming along pleasantly when for the reveal, I committed a big boo-boo. I read Dell Instead of Deli and couldn’t figure out what a BAGEL SLICER had to do with a computer, but not being familiar with Dells, I accepted it. You’d think I would have re-read the clue, but my excuse is I have a cold and had a terrible night.

Otherwise, I really liked this puzzle. I too had can before BIN.

Thank you Hahtoolah for the fine review. I liked the BAGEL story. Magnolia trees are in full bloom in my neighborhood. They’re gorgeous.

Good Morning:

This offering definitely had some bite to it, fitting, I suppose, considering the theme. The circles were there for the newbie and solvers in training, not for the old guard solvers, as is the rule for early week puzzles. The difficulty level should offset the circle complaints and the generous perps should offset the difficulty level. Even with the circles, I was surprised and pleased by the cute and clever reveal.

Thanks, Rena, and thanks, Hahtoolah, for the usual mixture of fun and facts. Favorite comic was Grandpa Eel and best photo was the beautiful Peony. Hand up for Every Good Boy Does Fine and Trash Bin or Garbage Can.

Have a great day.

If you don't give a hoot about musical nomenclature and whatnot, you might want to ignore this comment and go on to the next.

The treble clef's Every-Good-Boy-Does-Fine mnemonic is useful, because the bass clef mnemonic uses mostly the same words (Good-Boys-Do-Fine-Always).

What about those odd symbols for the clefs at the beginning of each staff? I'm glad you asked.

The treble clef is also known as the C-clef, which is why its lower part sort of curls around the C line of the staff.

As a bass, I live with the bass clef, also known as the F-clef. This clef resembles a backwards C with two dots emerging from its upper right. Those two dots aren't arbitrarily placed; they flank the F line of the staff (thus F-clef).. And if you have a good imagination, you will see the bass clef as intended: it is a wonderfully stylized F.

End of lesson.

I'll add my voice to the chorus of "tougher than a Tuesday" commenters.
It mattered little, though, since most weekday puzzles are typically pretty easy.
Overall, a very fair puzzle whose handful of sticky spots were crossed by friendly perps.

Lucina said...

Hola! Lots of chatter about this puzzle! I thought it was moderately easy and have not had coffee yet! ACAPPELLA and PSYCHOLOGY were a bit challenging to spell but thanks to kindly perps, all ended well.
My daughter and her husband take dancing lessons every week and are adept at the TANGO. Next month they will show their new skills in a recital.
In Phoenix the AVEnues are all west of Central and the streets are east of Central. One of my friends lives on 102nd AVE.
I've seen only one Star Wars movie, and I doubt that NABOO was part of it.
As for The Office, all I know about that is from crosswords.
Have a lovely day, everyone and thank you, Hahtoolah, for a lively review.

Lisa “Edelstein”? Otherwise fairly standard Tuesday fare

We have the guillotine type BAGEL SLICER exactly like the one in the cartoon in the hospital cafeteria which inevitably smashes rather than slices. And there oughtta be a law against toasting garlic bagels in the adjacent toaster 😷

Inkovers : USA/OLÉ, eve/ NYE

”A.P. Bio” was a 4 season Netflix hilarious comedy series. Glen Howerton plays a disgruntled High School teacher who lost an opportunity at a Harvard professorship to a rival and uses the class to seek revenge.

coy? koy? coi? KOI !!! ”EVERY Good Boy Does Fine” and what T Ken said Good Boys Do Fine Always

New York State flower is the Rose.
Our city of Utica NY flower is the PEONY as well. Growing up seems every house had them.

Our chem teacher in HS called the noble gasses inearth

FIR in 12, about typical for me on a Tuesday. 6A coulda been almost any 4 letters, needed perps. And DNK "PEONY". This was the only sticking point in this CW for me.

I noticed the theme early, which helped.

Needed perps to correctly spell "A CAPPELLA".

15 names, only 4 DNKs among them, one being ALTOID, which I knew but couldn't bring to mind until perps gave me several letters, and a V-8 can.

Thanx RC, fine Tuesday CW. And I love bagels, so great theme.

Thanx too for the terrific write-up, Hahtoolah. I must say, though, that the link you supplied for beer/ale was ridiculously full of misinformation. The biggest error is claiming beers/ales get their alcoholic content from distillation! WHAT? Neither is a distilled alcoholic beverage. The alcohol comes from the fermentation process.

Thanx for the info re the Khan Academy. I may check it out to see if I can reduce my level of ignorance. I've always liked Einstein's comment: "The more you know, the more you realize how ignorant you are."

The mention of capers reminds me that while I love capers, I always forget them on a bagel.

To me they are "trash cans", "recycle bins", and "yard waste bins". Don't know if it's just me, a SOFLO thing, or universal.

Poe is one of my favorite authors. Has a movie been made of his life? It would make a great movie.

Firstly, I think RustyBrain said it best!
To quote: "Thanks, Hahtoolah, for the infotaining review!"
(I will add this to my crossword vocabulary, along with twurd...)

There is one thing I have to complain about, that sneaky clue/answer that made me ink "eve" instead of NYE! Yes, I must complain that it was too dang good! (Ya got me...)

New Jersey State Flower is the common blue violet.
(I think the NJ State Flower is Paterson Falls...

When teaching specifically children, specifically guitar, we describe standard tuning as E,A,D,G,B,E, or Eddie Ate Dynamite, Good Bye Eddie...
(This comes after our first song, My Dog Had Fleas, (so what...)

Tango reminded me of TBBT Sheldon Cooper, the only person I thought did the Tango alone, (because he was antisocial?) but I was wrong. turns out it was The Flamenco...

The whole bagel thing reminded me of Alton Brown's Good Eats episode where he ran into trouble with his lawyers, because, he uses "Lye" in the soaking water to promote browning, and Lye is poisonous! But it turns out that was not the recipe for bagels, it was the recipe for "pretzels!"

If all the above is not silly enough, let me add that ever since I discovered an everything bagel seasoning that includes jalapeño! I have added it to "everything."
When I say "everything," I mean "EVERYTHING!"
I sprinkle it on my oatmeal, on my bran flakes, on my toasted cream cheese, I even have been known to just toss a handful in my mouth by itself to ward off the munchies... (exception would have to be avocado on toast, that requires salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and red pepper flakes. (I dunno, it's a tradition...)

So, if I post a recipe, you may want to take it with a grain of (I dunno, everything bagel seasoning with jalapeños?)
CE:D out...

Interesting Tuesday puzzle, many thanks, Rena. And your commentary is always helpful, Hahtoolah, so many thanks for that too.

Well, all puzzles AMASS a lot of words into a very consistent structure, but it's fine if they echo different AGE periods in different parts of the work. This puzzle surprised me with what felt like a food focus, with its SALAD INGREDIENT right there in the middle, including a LEAF, followed by so much more. We thankfully got an EGG for breakfast, along with a BAGEL SLICER and DIPs, and for lunch we were offered some ALES to SIP, along with an OLIVE, and that strange frozen LEMON ICE for dessert. Well, enough about food. I'm going to take a nap, and spend my afternoon focusing on the ARTS.

Have a pleasant, delightful day, everybody.

I'm with you. I'm not aware of any true EAP biopic. There was "The Pale Blue Eye" a couple years ago that featured him in a fictionalized setting. He's a cadet at West Point helping solve a crime!

One or two others like that, always fictionalized. I seem to recall Vincent Price (who else?) playing Poe, but I think all he did was introduce and give background to "the Raven" and other works.

As a native of Baltimore, like Poe, I am offended that Hollywood--to my knowledge--has never attempted a legitimate biography of such a pivotal literary figure.

Except the treble clef is the G-clef, and it wraps around the G line on the staff.

Hi All!

It took me 2 days but I solved Saturday's puzzle w/ no crutches.  In INK, I might add.

Thanks Rena for a fine Tuesday puzzle.

Hahtoolah - you always outdo yourself on comics!  The LEAFs judging the fall & Dove of Peace are LOL!

WOs: EENIe, KELsy
ESP:  LISA
Fav:  I'll go w/ ALTOID - they got me off cigarettes...

Jinx - TX went one way CA & VA are going the other.  It's all stupid and folks get less access to representation.  And #NoPolitics

Last time I was in NYC, we were stayed in the Sugar Hill area*.  I found a really good BAGEL shop not far away.  Each morning I'd make my hike over there and, having seen The Soup Nazi, had my order set to fire.
//I remember one guy in the joint had an Astros hat on and I asked about it.  Not from H-Town, Nope.  He just got it from a guy who sold stuff that falls off the back of trucks ;-)

We have a few places in Houston for good BAGELs.  Kenny & Ziggy's is totes legit.  They fly the lox in daily.    Fuhgedaboudit is really good and closer to me (I always get the Chairman :-))  4 Brothers' NY BAGELS are also good - but nobody goes there anymore, they'res always a wait :-)

Cheers, -T
*Little Black Book Shop is a great place to stay - the 4th photo down is where DW & I slept.  Oh, and the owner lives upstairs and has a cat that likes to come down & visit :-)
