Notes from C.C.:
1) Today we celebrate the 72nd birthday to our caring Madame DeFarge. Happy Birthday, Janice!
2)
Our blog turns 12 year old today. I'm eternally grateful for my hard-working blogging team, faithful regulars and others who have supported us over the years.

Quick and easy with a helpful theme. I hardly see CESS in writing, so I had to pause there.
FIR, but erased cocoa for CACAO and stinks for SMELLS. DNK ADAM Silver or ALO.
Liked ALIA and EL AL being present.
If you want LITE beer it will be a Miller; they trademarked it. Back in the day I was a Bud Light man, especially when ASEA.
This may come as a shock, but I have been called "an outboard in the CESSpool". Seems that some folks think I like to stir up the...well, just stir things up.
My laptop looks pregnant. I think that the battery I had installed last year is about to pop. Next laptop WILL have a user-replaceable battery, even if it is a Toshiba (of which I once said "never again").
Thanks to Chase for the fun. And thanks to Hahtoolah for the interesting comments.
Carol and I FIR in 18:06 min.
Good morning Cornerites.
Thank you Chase Dittrich for your Tuesday Easy Peasy Puzzy.
Thank you Hahtoolah for your excellent review.
HBDY Madame DeFarge.
H
appy Anniversary Corner! I was in Rehab last year. I meant to read the review but have yet to do so.
I have now done so, So?

Welcome back to the Chase and Susan Tuesday show. This is our second puzzle from Chase who had his first mainstream puzzle published here on a Tuesday on my granddaughter Charlotte's 7th birthday. He has nice enough to stop by and I hope he does so again, though perhaps he can share some personal information.
The puzzle had a great balance of information, not too many proper names, or foreign words, or obscure trivia. It is fun to see VICE VERSA and PALETTE but shocking to be reminded that BOB ROSS died 25 years ago. Interestingly (to me) he was born exactly 70 years before Charlotte.
Which brings us to the joy of madame Defarge's birthday. Enjoy the best year and many more.
This brings us to the amazing Zhouqin Burnikel who not only started this blog 12 years ago today but has become one of the most successful and prolific constructors of the past decade.
You continue to entertain and amaze us. Thank you for what you have done for all of us who blog, who comment and who have become better solvers and published puzzle makers.
You will always be number 1.
Good morning!
Hand up for STINKS -- not the puzzle, the incorrect answer. Instead of EMS, I had EMT. Made me look sideways when "Ready for dinner" turned out to be TEATED. Hmmmmm. Thanx for the outing, Chase, and for the sterling review, Hahtoolah. (And thanx for 'splainin' HICS.)
IMAC: Some folks have had bad experiences. I'll stick with Windoze from now on.
SEDAN: I read that Ford is stopping production of all SEDANs. From now on it's SUVs or trucks only.
Happy birthday, MME Defarge. Looks like your temps will be hovering around freezing for the next couple of days. Too cold. I don't miss living in the northern suburbs.
Happy birthday, Blog. You're lookin' good for a twelve year old.
Off to get an eye exam this morning. It's been two years. Time to find out how my cataract crop is coming along.
Quick solve and theme today. Waited for perps for ALIA vs ALII. I had EMT before SEATED changed it to EMS- same as D-O! And I had the same D'oh moment with the Hi-Cs answer.
Happy birthday Madame DeFarge!
Congrats to CC on the anniversary of the blog!
Thanks to Susan and Chase for the puzzle!
Congratulations on reaching 12 years!
Good morning everyone.
Happy Birthday to Mme. DeFarge. Nice picture. You Chicago people are a nice sub-group of this great group. BZ
C.C. 别客气
Easy solve. no look-ups and only one wite-out. Good to see our SCHWA friend again.
Here is an Accordion POLKA to start your day. (I'm guessing the group are Flemings based on the Belgian url and the Dutch text offered by the poster.)
I play tennis, so I loved this puzzle.
Like desper-otto and inanehiker, I had EMT, which led to "ready for dinner" being TEATED. Then I was trying to figure out if a cow and a calf drinking her milk had something to do with the theme... I was kind of relieved when I figured out it was EMS/SEATED.
Thank you for the Hi-C explanation! I got tripped up on that one, too!
Musings
-Another fun device and Susan write-up
-I remember the SEWER as an escape route in Shawshank Redemption much better. Wonderful karma in that movie.

-Czech Mother-in-law nods off watching TV unless she is watching The Molly B Polka Party on the RFD channel
-Happy Birthday, Madame and the Blog!
Good Morning:
This was a simple yet clever theme with a couple of strategically placed entries: Ref above court and Smells abutting Sewers, and Tiara on top of Ball. Liked the Hola (Hi, Lucina) and Alo duo. CSO to Moi, Abejo, and PK at Aries. No unknowns and no w/os, so a smooth solve. I didn't realize Bob Ross and Christian Dior died so young.
Thanks, Chase, for a Tuesday treat and thanks, Hatoolah, for the visual extravaganza and fact and fun-filled expo.
Happy Birthday, Madame Defarge, enjoy your special day. 🎂🎁🎈🎉🎊
Happy Anniversary to the Corner and to our dear Blog Mistress, CC. Thank you for creating, maintaining, and nurturing this community of very special people. Thanks, everyone, for your presence and participation.
Have a great day.
Terrific Tuesday. Thanks for the fun, Chase and Hahtoolah.
I found it faster to move through the Downs today to what was a smooth solve.
One inkblot due to not remembering the meaning of Ellipsis and entering Arc. Perps changed to DOT . . . a Google visit updated my knowledge.
Another inkblot created by entering EtAl before ALIA. (Note cross of ALIA and ALIAS)
Hand up for EMT before EMS, and a lightbulb moment with HICS.
Unknowns/not remembered included Bob Ross, ADAM, SLATE and KARL.
Smiled to see REF above COURT (and then realized that Tennis has Umps). (I see that IM beat me and found several others too.)
CSO to Lucina with HOLA and ALO.
Of course, you all know that this Canadian's smallest bills are Fives; but I have been here long enough to automatically enter ONES.
Happy Birthday MadameD.
Happy 12th birthday to the Corner, and a huge thank you to C.C. and all the team (past and present). I found this blog by accident while Googling for a CW answer/explanation. I lurked for several years before becoming a regular. I have learned a lot, enjoyed the comradery, and hopefully contributed to international understanding. (Some constructor should put comradery in a CW - I had to look up the spelling!)
Enjoy the day.
What a day to celebrate! Happy happy to Mme D and the Corner (thanks CC!) and thanks to Chase for the fun puzzle. My favorite was SEWER next to SMELLS. Not sure what that says about me!
Hahtoolah your tour is another great thing to celebrate. Loved the MARDI Gras picture and info, as well as all the visuals. Thanks
Fairly easy with some dumb mistakes needing perp correction.
The tennis allusions were clear early on. Are tennis players RACKETeers?
Had Laser instead of GAMMA...Usually Nana..
TEATED? maybe referring to an infant?? *head slap* it's EMS not EMT!
Should not have been confused by the VODKA clue. The wife always enjoys a "cosmo" when out for dinner
AMUSED? Did Queen Victoria say "We are not tickled pink!" ??
Buon Compleanno Madame DeFarge. Please don't include my name in your knitting. I need my head.
Happy blog day as well.
Good morning.
Happy Birthday Madame Defarge ! The sun is shining for you today.
Happy Anniversary to the Crossword Corner !
My niece Rachael earned the moniker "RACKET" and it was well deserved.
Didn't know the spirits that went into a Cosmopolitan, but with the V in place, Vermouth came to mind.
Irish Miss, I am sorry for your loss.
Game, Set and Match to mixed doubles partners Chase and Hahtoolah.
C.C. has a puzzle, "Double A" over at USA Today.
HOLA! y OLA!
Happy birthday, Madame Defarge!
What fun! Thank you, Chase Dittrich! And many thanks to you, Hahtoolah!
Though I don't play tennis I loved all the allusions especially MAKE A RACKET! And the double meanings of GO TO COURT made me chuckle.
The puzzle was an easy sashay though I had one write over, TITLE before TIARA.
HOLA and OLA were amusing to see. HOLA is Spanish and OLA is Portuguese. And yes, I saw ALIA/ALIAS crossing.
Swamp Cat:
Your remark about SMELLS and SEWER made me laugh.
C.C.:
Congratulations on 12 years of the Blog! It is a crowning success and a magnet for those of us who love crossword puzzles.
My late DH watched Bob Ross religiously and learned painting techniques from him. He became a good painter as a result. I kept one that is hanging in the living room and my daughter has the rest. It's surprising to now see so many Bob Ross items for sale including a chia bust.
Have a happy day, everyone!
Happy Anniversary to Crossword Corner. Thank you CC for your inspiration, hard work and kindness in curating this very special blog. It is a fount of fun, friendship and learning to us logophiles, a very satisfying part of my morning routine. And a word of thanks to all the daily bloggers and behind the scenes helpers. What a bunch of fine virtual friends meet here.
Happy birthday, Madame D. I am glad you are mending and able to chime in again.
Agnes, condolences on the loss of your dear sister. It is a real blessing to have sisters as friends. I am glad you discovered the origin of your eye problem before it did too much damage.
As usual I solved this puzzle at the local coffee shop. I got to socializing and had to leave with a small corner unaddressed. Immediately upon returning home I eagerly went to the blog and found I had left an easy part blank. Grr!
Great theme, Chase. Very informative and fun blog, Susan.
Tampa's version of MARDI Gras is Gasparilla, celebrated this week and culminating in the "Invasion" of the pirate "Gaspar" and his bead slinging "Mystic Krewe".
Doubt has been cast about this ancient adventure. Perhaps "Old" Man Keith remembers. Gaspar
My go-to "agony" gal is Caroline Hax in tbtimes. Prudence looks like fun.
HICS was solid but it lost me too
Jinx, Phil and Betsy returned from the frozen* north last night. If we meet up I'll see if he'll install a new battery. He converted my $70 cell to $300 with his tricks with heat gun, credit card and U-tube.
Since lemonade said it so well I can only add DITTO. And hbd to the always interesting Mme DeFarge may she spin another decade

That's quite the get-up Alice Faye is wearing just to do the dishes.
All she needs is a TIARA to complete the look.
Delightful Tuesday puzzle--many thanks, Chase. I enjoyed getting all the theme answers without any problems, though I didn't recognize the sport as tennis. Then had another sport problem in the southwest corner because I, of course, didn't know KARL. Unlike others, I put HEATED instead of SEATED--hey, a dinner has to be HEATED to be ready to be eaten, doesn't it? But I got everything else and enjoyed seeing CHER. And your pictures are always great, Hahtoolah, along with your explanations.
Happy birthday, Madame Defarge--sweet picture!
And, my goodness, C.C. thank you so much for starting this blog so many years ago. I'm pretty sure I'm one of your original members because I had been on another blog that closed down and was so relieved when I was able to join this one. What a treat it has been to look forward to this wonderful company of friends over so many years. And then you began doing crossword puzzles and they are among the most clever we ever get. How do you do all that--it's absolutely amazing. And then, for an extra gift, you gave us sweet Boomer, and his funny and delightful commentaries to start off the week. I wish we could throw you a party to celebrate--you totally deserve it! Or at least we should get you a TIARA! Have a wonderful anniversary day!
Happy Birthday...
Happy Anniversary.
Dumb start in the NW but then went through the rest of this Tuesday grid.
Write-overs...just the one..ETAL/ALIA.
Fairly cold here in SC...42°...brrrr.
On to Wednesday.
CC Congratulations and Happy Birthday to Crossword Corner!
Was I the only one who was misdirected to MANTA instead of GAMMA Ray?
Hand up I wondered what were HICS for a bit. Fun and clever theme. FIR.
My friend's teenager made this creative tribute to BOB ROSS in our Solstice Parade!
Hand up, I never heard of BOB ROSS before that. Solstice also gave us EASTER ISLAND STATUES.
Here is a photo of my brother and his wife with a mural of the EASTER ISLAND STATUES from the Solstice Parade!
A very good friend was part of that EASTER ISLAND STATUES ensemble. They were "costumed" as "Mud People" which meant that they were almost naked and covered in mud for the parade. Since I was in the parade I am not sure I have photos. I will have to look.
From Sunday:
CanadianEh thank you for taking the time to watch that Sandhill Cranes video. And glad you enjoyed my CHICHEN ITZA photos! I am still eagerly awaiting the next round of our email conversation!
I’m back for another limerick on today’s puzzle:

Could it be that he has VERSA VICE?
BTW, Haiku Harry says “hi” ...
WC, I'm taking the laptop to the PC clinic that replaced the battery last year. I also have a 500GB SSD I took out of my homebrew desktop that I'm having him install. (I cloned the current drive onto the "new" SSD.)

Always put tape over your 9 volt battery connectors
when you toss them into the junk draw!
I got a couple of radio control toys this Xmas,
& they all come with Lithium batteries these days.
Because, (& only because) I could not get one to work,
I did some research & accidentally discovered that
ALL LITHIUM BATTERIES SHOULD BE STORED IN METAL AMMO CANS!
Why?
Because even though they have a safety internal cut off switch,
"if" the voltage becomes TOO LOW they can spontaneously combust!
You can fast forward thru this 10 minute video for proof,
or you can get a cheap fireproof safe like this guy...
Yes, Picard. I haven't forgotten our email conversation . . . but grandchildren are calling for the next few days.
Hope to connect next week. How did I ever have time to work?!
CED - love the blog cake!
Picard, I always enjoy your pictures. If you have one in your mud costume feel free to post. I tuned into a Star Trek with Picard going at it with the admiral about Data's "child".
My fav these days is "Mom". I am so Art challenged: Ross, Klee(I had H. Lee- no relation to haiku Harry,eh?).
Jinx, any luck on internet for the RV village? The only provider we could find up in NW Marion county was Viasat.
Which is expensive.

C.C., congrats on 12 years. You are amazing and have "collected" an amazing group who have been so accepting of everyone that has entered into conversations. You all are like an up-to-date encyclopedia with pz-zazz!! I learn every time I do a crossword, but I learn more when I read what you all have to say.
Good afternoon, folks. Thank you, Chase Dittrich, for a fine puzzle. Thank you, Hahtoolah, for a fine review.
On paper today. Cruciverb is out to lunch again.
Puzzle went along fine. Caught the tennis theme after a few answers.
Took me a while to get ARIES, even though I am one.
Liked REF and the clue.
Changed EMT to EMS after I wrote in SEATED.
Needed some perps for KARL. I do not follow a lot of basketball.
I love POLKA music and Polish food.
DRIVE THRUS are really booming. They rebuilt an entire Walgreens drug store near me just so they could have a drive thru.
Happy Birthday, Madame DeFarge, and many more!
10 degrees this morning while guarding. Oh well. it is January.
See you tomorrow.

HBD Janice!
And HBD to C.C. on behalf of all of us in her Corner!!
Veddy clehvuh of Mr. Dittrich, this pzl: "Tennis, anyone?"
Ta~ DA!
And I vote with desper-otto and others (good company!) for EMT and TEATED. Both are perfectly good answers for their respective clues. (Neither ovine nor bovine can be "Ready for dinner" unless securely latched on.)

WC, the hardware is in place but they are still finalizing agreements with the ISP and/or the cable company. Looks like mid-February. Supposed to be $40 per month for unlimited access, which is fine if they don't pile on taxes and fees.
I'm using 8GB from VZ. Can't go unlimited, because I'll lose my retiree discount permanently if I do. I'll still do it when VZ gets 5G in Norfolk, because I want to fire cox.
Happy Birthday, Madame DeFarge! Wishing you a very happy and special day.
I am honored to be blogging on this anniversary of the Blog. I joined the blog about a year after C.C. began this venture. She is amazing!
Hi All!
Thanks Chase for the for the puzzle - I assume a clay surface, no? :-)
Wonderfully illustrated expo Hahtoolah. Unfortunately, I'll be missing Bacchus' Krewe again this year.
WOs: Hand-up with EMt, also spelt it ODeN at first.
ESPs: ALIA (nice catch with ALIAS, C, Eh!)
Fav: MARDI Gras! I need to find a new bakery for King Cake; our local one (w/ chef from NOLA) retired :-(
Serendipitous error: I read 65d's clue as ellipse and justified it by definition: "A series of points (or DOTs) equidistant to each foci." :-)
Cute DR. Apply to atheists in a fox-hole too :-) [or at the SPA?]
Funny, Nissan VERSA Limerick Larry.
Happy Birthday MdF! So glad you're back posting more regularly.
Happy Anniversary C.C. to you and The Corner. YR & JD put it better than I could.
Lucina - Pop and I would watch Bob Ross weekly. Pop is more of a pen-and-ink artist but really wanted to dabble in oils.
Well, I got to stop MILLing about and get packing. Heading to SPI in the morning to visit my family on the occasion my Army-Bro is temporarily home from Kuwait!
Cheers, -T
Greetings all,
Congrats to CC and her bowling specialist for providing such a wonderful Corner hang out. I am also very grateful for our highly talented explicators. Merci!
I am feeling better, but this diverticulitis will probably end with surgery. . . . I appreciate all your good wishes.. I am still doing the puzzles and plan on spending more time here once again. I have to admit to being just a tad fussy. . . .
Thanks so much for the birthday wishes. What a sunny day! CED, the cake is amazing. In 8 years it will still be perfect.
. . . And to all a good night.
Hi Y'all! Great puzzle, Chase! Great expo, Susan! Would enjoy hearing more about your travels to Israel.
Happy Birthday, Madame DeFarge! Loved the cake, CED "baked" for you.
Happy Corner Anniversary to C.C. and to all who have found a special bond here. As I've settled into a reclusive state, I've cherished the intelligence and wittiness of all here. You would be amazed at how often I've said to a relative or other "live" friend, "I've got a blog friend who said or did such & such..." That adds interest to our conversation of the moment and they are glad I have valued contacts.
New to me: ELLIPSIS. Had to LIU after puzzle was done.
Hand up for tEATED which I hated to give up, having provided mammary nourishment to four infants in my younger days.
I am having problems with blurry eyes and have had to limit my time on the computer which worsens the condition. Miss reading the blog some days entirely. Luckily, I can still do the puzzle most days.
PK:
Is it cataracts that makes your vision blurry? If so, it's an easy fix. I hope you visit your eye doctor soon.
Lucina, don't know what causes the eyes to blur. Probably overuse to some extent. I read a lot. They water and burn with the computer lighting. I need to have my glasses changed, I know. Eyes clear up when I rest them frequently, but go to sleep then. Use drops in them which helps some.
