First two long answers I got were DROPPED CALL and GEPPETTO, and I thought the theme was doubled double letters. The D...C... I got, linking it to WASHINGTON I didn't expect.

Some clues hit me below the belt. On Saturday while I was attempting to park in a narrow handicap parking space I lost contact with the brake pedal and jumped a curb banging the Santa Fe grillwork off the Handicap parking sign post. No damage to the sign however I learned just how much plastic is in the front end of the car. Now I am waiting for Progressive to line me up with a body shop. I wonder if they can also clean the egg off my face.

CARMEL -- Clint Eastwood was mayor there back in the '80s for $200/month.
OATS -- You'd think a cereal factory would have a pleasant aroma. Can't speak for all of 'em, but Quaker Oats made a very unpleasant stench in Cedar Rapids. It was close to downtown and permeated the area.
FIR with no erasure. My only total unknown was GEPPETTO. I always think of travesty as being something awful, and FARCE being something ridiculous. But I learned the additional meaning of FARCE in a puzzle last week.
IIRC, the main cause of dropped calls is travelling from one cell tower area into another, and all the channels at the new tower are in use. Since there isn't any place to connect the call, it is dropped. The phone company measures these events and compares them to performance standards, adding capacity when there are too many dropped calls. It is counterintuitive, but adding capacity involves reducing the power of the existing towers and adding more towers. Achieving performance goals can be a real Poisson adventure for the engineers.

A nice start to the week with a FIR. Thanks, Janice, for a puzzle well suited to the day, easy enough without being boring. I saw the theme developing but the first two, DEAD and DROPPED, had me thinking of fatalities. Then came DEBT which didn't fit that theme and I noticed the D and C combinations so WASHINGTON came to mind.

Nice easy puzzle to solve after a week of not solving at all. My ADDLED brain couldn't cope due to covid. I am almost better. I am having a chest Xray today to be sure I don't have pneumonia.
I solved most of Sunday's fun puzzle before getting too tired.
DO, cereal factory odor. I empathize. During a college summer I worked in a settlement house in Philadelphia, cheek by jowl with a beer factory. The odor permeated everywhere. Additionally, I could look out my bedroom window at the passing elevated trains and see exactly what everyone was wearing and the expression on their faces.

I FIRed and saw the DC theme, but thought it was a little crunchier than the usual Monday. I’ll chalk it up to Canadian disadvantage.

CE Dave, to answer your questions: (Others may wish to skip this.) I felt slightly "off" on awakening Wed. morning so I took a rapid covid self-test and was surprised it was positive. All Wed. though Sat. I had 99.9 fever which left me feeling very unwell. My normal is about 97.4. Covid magnified my usual sinus problems and post nasal drip. The doctor prescribed brand new Paxlovid and by Sat, evening my fever was down and my sinuses were "normal" for me. I still have slight chest congestion but never had breathing problems. I had a chest X-ray today. During the fever period I took lots of rest and stayed hydrated.
This year I had two shots and a booster. I am very careful and wear a mask in stores. Except for grocery shopping I do not come into contact with the unvaccinated. I have not infected anyone I know including Alan.
I think the new meds and the shots made this a relatively mild experience.
If this is TMI, I warned you.

First of all, congrats to Boomer for the naming of an award after him! AND thanx for today’s nice write-up. I can’t help wondering why you would drive 20 miles to get the Miso. Can u not order it from Amazon? Best wishes on this weeks treatments. Now, the CW: managed to FIR but took 16 (hello, anon!) and don’t know if the CW was a little crunchy for a Monday or if fate is still getting even with me for my Friday romp. Or maybe my age is catching up to me. When I saw DROP, DEAD, DEBT and DRAFT (as between the ears) I knew the theme had to be Washington DC. The soap LYE fill makes me once again suggest people STOP using soap altogether. No scent/no dye liquid laundry detergent is much better: gets you cleaner, is MUCH easier on your skin and especially your eyes (due to a better pH), AND if that’s not enuf, leaves no soap scum. Oh, and it’s cheaper than bar soap. I’ve been using it for years. Yellowrocks @7:34 I’m glad you’re feeling better. As you said, good job you were fully immunized. Uncle Fred, yes it was a brewery, of course. Sometimes this old brain has a temporary hiccup. That's why names slow down puzzle solving for me. When Alan forgets a word I encourage him to "talk around it." I did here. Smelling the brewery at first was fine. Smelling it 24/7 all summer became annoying. We were literally right next door to the brewery and the EL in a tough neighborhood which we seldom left.

WASHINGTON DC was my home town for many years and I still have friends there. Loved the CSO theme for me! I have many WASHINGTON DC photos.
Here I was at the WASHINGTON Monument with the Capitol barely visible over my shoulder.
Loved seeing physicist ERNST MACH honored. One of my heroes. Yes, people know him for the speed of sound as noted by billocohoes. But I was in awe of his insights into general relativity before Einstein.
MACH noted that if you spin a bucket of water, the water rises at the edges due to "centrifugal force". MACH speculated you would get the same effect if the bucket stayed still and you rotated the universe around it. A difficult experiment to do. But it was an impressive insight of relativity that led eventually to detecting gravitational waves.

I found a very satisfying solution. I got an Alcatel MyFlip 2 phone at Best Buy for $19.99 that is tied to Tracfone.
Then I bought a year of prepaid service from Tracfone for $125. Yes, about $10 a month. A third of what Verizon was charging. They even transferred my phone number over and that took less than a day to be completed.
If you want to do this phone number transfer, I highly recommend calling Tracfone service at 800-867-7183 and talk to a real person. Just answer "I don't have one" or "other" to every question so that you reach an actual human. Their automated system is awful, but the human agents are very good. Much better than Verizon's!
Tracfone has been around since 1996.
WC, Poisson is a specialized area of statistics that deals with infrequent events. When I was there, telco engineers dimensioned the network to have a failed call rate of 1 in 100 or 1 in 1,000 during the busiest times. You've heard about Hogan's goat? That's IAH for the foreseeable future. It's supposed to be completed the 32nd or maybe 33rd of May, but the exact year has not been mentioned.
According to one of my friends who was just up there, the road that runs among the terminal buildings is down to ONE lane. I had to pick up my uncle there last summer (because he ignored my advice to fly into Hobby). It was terrible then (two lanes), and it is apparently worse now.
Whatever you do, fly into Hobby --- and make sure you let us know ahead of time, so that we can make some plans!!!
FWIW, there is another 'Carmel' that is much more relevant for C-Eh! There is a Carmel, NY -- just north of Mahopac and west of Danbury, CT. But, being New York, the town's name isn't pronounced 'Car-MEL' like Californians do, but rather 'CAR-mel' with the 'e' morphing into a schwa. (Of course, Mahopac is pronounced 'Ma-HO-pac', instead of the California-conditioned 'MAY-ho-pac.')

I was surprised by the short form CATH ... and on hindsight it could also stand for catheter ... especially the dreaded Foley one. If you think it maybe painful and inconvenient, ... think of all the people who have permanent ones !!! There are a lot of people walking around with tubes and other paraphernalia coming out of their bodies, on a permanent basis...

I have gone to Carmel-by-the -sea, south of MOnterey, 2 times. Is that the same as the Carmel in Calif ? Cute, expensive homes, and fancy boutique stores...

Yellowrocks, thank you for your post-vac COVID experience, a lots of docs informed me that if one gets Covid, after they have been vaccinated, the symptons are generally quite mild.
Trust Pfizer to come up with an oral pill, they are licensing to 95 countries via UNICEF or UNESCO ....PaxLovid or ( Nirmatrelvir plus ritonavir.) I hope the doc also prescr some Nsaids to reduce the pain and the fever symptoms.
