Duuuunnn Duun… Duuunnnnnn.. Duh Dun Duh Dun

Theme Composer Williams

Chandi wants us to think twice about going into the waters. The first word of each splat (*) clue is a type of shark - an ocean dwelling beast with big, sharp, pointy teeth.

17. *Netflix documentary series about a controversial zookeeper: TIGER KING. Covid lock-down made this a must see for many. I watched 9 minutes before -- 'click'.

30. *Showtime medical drama starring Edie Falco: NURSE JACKIE. In the zeitgeist but I've never seen it (I'm more an HBO guy).

47. *USA series about corporate crime: WHITE COLLAR. A fun show with a bit of inspiration from the real-life Frank Abagnale [1h] #CatchMeIfYouCan

63. Annual Discovery Channel programming event that could feature the shows in the answers to the starred clues?: SHARK WEEK. The programs were cool to watch when I was in college but it's kinda jumped the Shark.

D'Oh!

OK! A fun circle-less theme where all the TV show titles start with a type of shark. And, each shark is five (5) letters. Tight.
Let's chum the waters and find out what else awaits in the depths.

Across:
1. Like uncombed hair: WILD.

He was told to smile :-p

5. Muslim leader: IMAM.

9. Structure made of snow or blankets: FORT.

I couldn't get the rights to Elf ;-)

13. "Gotcha": I SEE.

14. Walking stick: CANE. Was it a cane that killed Abel? I'm a bit fuzzy on Genesis.

15. Zones: AREAS.

17. [See: theme]

19. Krispy __: KREME.

20. Carton sealer: TAPE. We still have five tape-guns from our August move. I didn't want to toss the cartons (nice sturdy cardboard boxes) to recycle, so I posted on Nextdoor. A (new) neighbor moving to the Dallas AREA (15a) took most of the moving boxes. Anyone else use Nextdoor.com?

21. Tenant's contract: LEASE. I'm learning about this 'cuz I kept the old house. The tenants are wonderful people and, importantly, the check clears.

23. Abolish: BAN.

24. Home of the NHL's Blues: STL. Saint Louis is the home of NHL (hockey) Blues. Is the Enterprise Center known as The House of Blues? And, do Jake and Elroy play there? We should be told. (Are you still playing along at home, Steve?)

Blues Brothers [click for clip]

25. Floe makeup: ICE. Not to be confused with...

The OG Flo

27. Period: DOT. Ooops, not era.

28. Surgery ctrs.: ORS. Operating RoomS

29. Langley org.: CIA. Central Intelligence Agency

30. [See: theme]

37. Sinuous fish: EEL.

38. Sitar music: RAGA.

42. "Not Gon' Cry" singer Mary J. __: BLIGE. Perps. I LIU. Not my cuppa.

45. Tolkien creature corrupted by the One Ring: GOLLUM. The Ring - "his precious."

47. [See: theme]

51. Caustic solution: LYE. They're not lying! Pro Tip: Don't mix (even a small batch of) concrete with your bare hands.

52. Lady bird: HEN. Cute. And nothing to do with First Lady Johnson.

53. Obtained: GOT. //C'mon -T, you GOT this.

54. Iris locale: EYE.

55. Duty: TAX.

56. Husky hello: ARF. He barked with a rasp.

57. Vidalia __: ONION. Your everyday sweet onion.

Martha Stewart breaks it down

Linda Cohn

61. Thunders: ROARS.

63. [See: theme]

66. Fight with foils: FENCE. Sword fighting.

8. Many a contract for a superstar player, e.g.: MEGA-DEAL.

9. Orange skin that doesn't peel?: FAKE TAN. I'm not touching this #Politics

10. Hockey legend Bobby: ORR.

11. Boston-based sportswear giant: REEBOK.
A Shoe

12. Salty Japanese condiment: TAMARI. Fermented soy beans.  Less salty than soy sauce or so says the internet.

16. Word with common or good: SENSE. The former, unfortunately, is not so common.

18. Rider's controls: REINS. You'll need those for your one-horse open-sleigh #JingleBells

22. Korean rice liquor: SOJU. Perps.

24. Reminder of a scrape: SCAB. Also a picket-line crosser.

26. __ and paste: CUT. CTRL-X CTRL-V.

31. Girder material: STEEL. Makes those I-BARS we oft fill.

32. Corner PC key: CTRL. Control key for short-cut commands [see: CUT & paste]

37. Big-headed sorts: EGOTISTS. One just bought Twitter.

39. Complete: ALL THERE. Most EGOTISTS ain't.

40. Some northern South Americans: GUYANESE. Perps.  Language of the people "Of Many Waters."  No, not Minnesota nor Hamms beer (or was that Deep Blue Sky?) but, um, I'll let WikiP explain it.

43. Key part of a block party?: LEGO SET. Beer Can also fit.

44. Tappable image: ICON.

Windows 3.1 Flashbacks

45. "Bad Feminist" writer Roxane: GAY. Perps. Her WikiP

46. Big name in vacuums: ORECK. Not last week's HOOVER. From first-hand experience, I can tell you they both really do suck. :-)

47. Mooring spot: WHARF. A place to park your dinghy. Not to be confused with Lt. Warf.

Star Trek TNG

48. Medal recipients: HEROES. Little (Army) Bro won't talk about it but he was awarded a Purple Heart.

49. Swaddled one: INFANT. Wrapped in swaddling clothing / lying in a manger. Try as you might, Christmas started before Thanksgiving this year.

50. Algonquian language: LENAPE. Perps. WikiP

58. "Now I get it": OH OK. [see: LENAPE]

Good morning!

Wow, you were in fine fettle this morning, Tony. I, too, fell into the Manila/MAILER trap; Tease/TAUNT, too. Got the shark theme -- NURSE shark showed up on yesterday's Jeopardy, Tournament of Champions. This one seemed tough for a Wednesday -- not complainin', just observin'. Thanx, Chandi, and for the excellent tour, Dash-T. (If Picard has finished pouting, he'll give you hell about "Lt. Warf.")

desper-otto said...

TAMARI : Forgot to mention that the highest rated soy sauce, Kikkoman, comes not from Japan, but from Walworth, WI. Anyone else try SAKE before SOJU showed up?

Subgenius said...

This puzzle was an interesting combination of the obscure and the obvious. But, on the whole, I’d say it was easier than yesterday’s, and one of the most solvable puzzles of the week. FIR, so I’m happy.

Jinx in Norfolk said...

FIR, but erased era for DOT, tease for TAUNT, asap for STET, and scar for SCAB. At least partially guessed TIGER KING, WHITE COLLAR, and ANNE, plus the Natick GAY x GOLLUM. But I DID know NURSE JACKIE, so I got that goin' for me.

-T, my first thought for FAKE TAN was Charlie Crist. To me, he looks like a hybird of Bob Barker x George Hamilton. (OK so he's a politico, but his election is over. Wasn't really a serious candidate anyway.)

Thanks to Chandi for the fun puzzle, even thought it was loaded with pop-cult. My favorite was "husky hello" for ARF. And thanks to -T for the chuckle-worthy commentary (and for warning Cornerites about cryptocurrency.)

KS said...

FIR, with no problem, except a slight delay sussing out the SE corner. Typical midweek puzzle.

FIW, had SCAr and didn't know bEDE

unclefred said...

I found this to be a challenging CW, as was yesterday’s. DNK TAMMARI, SOJU, BEDE, LENAPE, or most of the proper names. I read all the Tolkien books, but that was fifty some years ago. Dredging GOLLUM from the depths took a while, and a few perps. W/Os TEASE:TAUNT, GUYANANS:GUYANESE. I wanted EGOIST, but too short, so (V-8 can) EGOTIST. 24D coulda been SCAB or SCAR. Lucky guess to put in a B, since I didn’t know BEDE, could as easily have been REDE for all I knew. 69A coulda been ASAP or STAT, needed perps, and the first one to show up was the A which was no help. Needed the T from INFANT. At last, a FIR in another disgraceful time of 27. Thanx for the challenging CW, CD. And thanx too for the outstanding write-up, -T. Jinx, when I saw “fake tan” my first thought was Trump, along with his hair and everything else about him.

Anonymous said...

This one took me 8:02 to make shark bait out of it.

I didn't care for this puzzle. Just like our Unclefred said,"Tammari, Soju, Bede, Lenape...."
Plus, I'm getting annoyed by the near-daily inclusion of some author (Anne) of a book I haven't heard of (not all, but often). The Rede/Bede v. Scar/Scab was poor construction/editing, and factoring in the 3-word count (sponsored by our Irish Miss) that was high today, there just wasn't much to like (although, Guyanese was interesting).

But hey, it had three types of sharks ... and no circles!

Anonymous said...

The simple theme went right under the rudder

First I had cream, corrected to creme. Bzzzt, another FIW. FAcETAN (OK the FAKETAN is(in fact?) on the FACE)

Tuesday switched with Wednesday as pop-cul was perpable. I caught the other K(op)
So much for staying away from politics but ignoring the gorilla is asking too much.

Very enjoyable write-up from Anon-T. Learned about GUYANA

OAS — Unclefred @7:46. I didn’t find your comments political in any way . My first thoughts about fake tan were same as yours and also brought to mind a Mexican vacation some years ago when someone who didn’t tan well got a spray tan on the beach the day he went home. Not a pretty sight.

ATLGranny said...

Great to see you blogging this morning, AnonT. I knew it was you when I got to the TAPE part of your review. Oh, my result today? As you pointed out, a FIW. I don't blame you for my misspelling SchD/SKED. At least you didn't TAUNT me.

Chandi's carefully crafted theme? Well done, but I forgot to think about it when I finished filling the grid. And I knew about NURSE shark from Jeopardy! Is this your debut puzzle here, Chandi? Come by and comment, please.

The WOs for today were Tease/TAUNT, miElE/ORECK, era/DOT (that was a surprise!) and eRS/ORS (missed noticing the key word "surgical"). Obviously I am not a WIT first thing in the morning.

I buy TAMARI sauce all the time instead of soy sauce. It has no wheat so is appropriate for family members with celiac disease. Less salt is helpful too.

Reading the comments from posters through the years is interesting. I noticed a couple of years ago that OMK started adding another layer of fun by doing the diagonal report. And recently Misty has started creating a story with words used in the puzzle. Who was the earlier poster who often did that? He hasn't commented in a long time. And I have been missing OwenK's posts. Hope he is OK.

Hope you all are doing well!

This started out slightly slow but then picked up speed to the end

This was a "whatever D-O said" puzzle. Like UF - I had GUYanans before GUYANESE- perps easily corrected.

I'm a big fan of George Eliot's novels - sad that in early 1800s she couldn't get published as Mary Ann Evans her actual name.

My freshman roommate's dad was an expert in Topography in mathematics - a UC Berkley prof - later in his career he started working in differential equations because there were so few people at the level to understand the advanced topology.

Thanks Tony for the fun blog and Chandi for the puzzle

Good Morning:

I completely missed the first word shark connection until reading the review. I thought the themers were just titles of TV shows. No excuses, just plain obtuseness. The proper name/noun references were my brick walls, as usual: Gollum, Cohn, Soju, Tamari, Lenape, and Anne and Gay, as clued. I also fell into the Manila/Mailer trap and, for the life of me, I cannot remember whether it’s Iman, Imam, or Imah. SS already mentioned the three letter word count factor. Nice CSO to Misty at RCA.

Thanks, Chandi, and thanks, Anon T, for a sparkling and fun review. You’re a natural as a blogger! It’s most interesting to me that each one of the blogging team has a unique voice and presentation. Kudos to you all for your dedication and diligence.

I live in a townhouse community where the mailboxes are in a grouping. Each individual box is on the small side but there are lockers for any oversized packages. Yesterday, I picked up a week’s worth of mail and the box was so jammed full, I could hardly wrestle the contents free. The mail carrier must have magical powers because he somehow managed to fit in 19 Catalogues, 12 requests for donations, 4 commercial ads, one personal letter, and a DVD from Netflix. I’m sure he’ll be happy today when he sees the empty box!

Have a great day.

Typical Humpday challenge, kinds of sharks, nice theme, so I won't Mako fuss ...🦈

If they gave Emmy awards for the weirdest documentaries TIGER KING would have won hands (paws) down. MAILER, like AnonT, almost tried Manila. AMIDST/amid whilst/while. SKED? who says that? A Brit would hafta say shed.

EGOTIST or egoistic (LIU: "A egoist can be described as a selfish person and an egotist as a self-centered person.") And I thought the only difference was the letter T 😆

"Sitar music:: annoying and irritating both too long. ROARS are usually CW guffaws... A Native American of the LENAPE tribe is one of the fun spirits on one of my fav comedies "Ghosts" on CBS... SOJU?

TOPO: Ital. for mouse "Topolino", Mickey Mouse, "Topolina", Minnie Mouse (keep running into them here in Orlando)

Our students study NJ history in the fifth grade. I have taken them on field trips to nearby Allamuchy Mountain State Park in NJ. We visited a model of a 400 year old Lenape village where a docent taught us about Lenape family life. The park also includes locks of the Morris Canal which carried barges loaded with coal across northern New Jersey. The canal connected the two industrial canals at Easton, Pennsylvania, across the Delaware River from its western terminus at Phillipsburg, New Jersey to New York Harbor and New York City. The park has a restored 1800's canal-side village with working sawmills, grist mills, blacksmiths, etc.
We liberal arts students studied English Literature in college where we met George Eliot (nee Mary Ann Evans) an English author who was widely respected. Her novels, Adam Bede, The Mill on the Floss and Silas Marner, are some of her famous works.

Thank you Chandi. Now that's more like it! I wonder if Patti got yesterday's and today's puzzles mixed up?

And thank you -T. Lotsa fun! You can see all those sharks (except for the WHITE) and more at the National Aquarium in BMORE. We're taking the two youngest grandsons there on an INNING this coming Friday.

14A CANE. CAIN had the MOTIVE and the OPPORTUNITY, but Genesis has nothing to say about the MEANS. It remains a MYSTERY.

57A ONION. Switch to VIDALIAs and you'll never WEEP (71A) again.

67A TOPO. The closer the lines, the steeper the grade.

63A SHARK WEEK. I once dated a girl whose family owned a 40' yacht. One summer we circumnavigated the DeLMarVa peninsula. Down South around Wachapreague we were out swimming in a shallow inlet, when an 8' shark jumped completely out of the water about 30 yds away. We promptly hopped into our rubber dingy and HIED back to the yacht. Some things you don't forget.

70A SKED. We've seen this before, but today it was my last fill.

9D FAKE TAN. Let's hope that if we wait long enough it'll go away.

24D SCAB. The recent BRITBOX series Sherwood was about SCABS. Great story. The good news is that Leslie Manville survived it and is starring in Magpie Murders. And next week Teri, Irish Miss, and I will find out who done it.

34D DEBT. And some just declare Chapter 11 and write it off. See e.g. 9D.

Cheers,
Bill

Hola!

My daughter would love this puzzle! She loves SHARKS! I've given her many SHARK themed gifts over the years. SHARK WEEK is her favorite show.

My trick for remembering IMAM and IMAN is that though IMAN contains a MAN she is a woman and IMAM is not a ma'am but a man.

Not in a million years would I have known GOLLUM. Luckily it perped and it's ALL THERE.

My great-grandson is no longer an INFANT but he is having a hard time remembering to use the toilet. Sigh.

Hand up for thinking MANILA before MAILER.

I have no idea about ANNE Moody but I know about ANNE of a Thousand Days.

Thank you, Tony! You do a great job of 'splainin'.

Have a wonderful day today, everyone!

Good morning. Thank you, Chandi, and thank you, Dash T.

No real problems, although perps were required for the completely unknown SOJU. Perps were also need to stir the memory on a few other answers. We've had LENAPE frequently enough that I recall it after a few letters.

Hand up for Tease before TAUNT. Also had BEnE before BEDE even though BEDE, if nothing else, is common fill.
Hand up for GUYANANS

Vidalia ONION - I'm partial to Texas Super Sweet 1015-Y onions. The typical Super Sweet weighs about 1 pound and is 4" to 5" in diameter. Can't always find them here, so I have to settle for Vidalias when I want big sweet onions :-)

Dash T - get a property manager and save yourself the headaches and distractions.

Ray-O, EGOTIST - I have a golfing buddy that goes over the top. I ask him "Who's it all about, Mike ?" and he answers "Me !" every time.

Gotta run. Have to make salsa fresca (pic de gallo) and guac for the Tex Mex fajitas we're going to have tonight. Just wish I had some better onions.

Token Creek, I am in northern Illinois, just about 30 miles west of Chicago. Why do you ask ?

Earlier this morning I was outside in my shed and in the back yard in the falling snow running my three lawn mowers. Each winter, I top off the tanks to prevent condensation, add fuel stabilizer, run the engines to mix the additive and get it flowing through the carburetors, and then turn off the fuel petcocks. I let the engines run until there is no more fuel in the carburetors, and the engines stop. I believe doing so prevents the gunk from building up in the carbs.

I also got the snowblower out and fired it up. It started right up even though I last filled it up on February 19th, and added the stabilizer at that time. I'm all set in case we get any measurable snow that needs more effort than a light shoveling. You've already had some good snows up there, haven't you ?

Fun Wednesday puzzle, many thanks, Chandi. And always enjoy your commentary, Anon T, thanks for that too.

As soon as I saw RCA, I knew you'd remember that my Dad worked there for decades, Irish Miss.
And so you did, and it made me smile.

This puzzle started out promising some WILD AREAS, although one sure didn't expect that a TIGER and a SHARK would end up TAUNTing and FENCing with each other--over an ONION, of all things.
Of course, soon one of them got a CUT and began to ARF and ROAR and WEEP. With no NURSE there to put some LYE on the wound and bandage the SCAB, the fighters had to get LEGAL AID. And now they're friends again and treat each other like HEROES. Stories don't get much crazier than this, do they?

Have a good rest of the week, everybody.

Jayce said...

Add a letter to TOPO to get TOPOL, the actor who played Tevye in the movie version of Fiddler on the Roof.

Add a letter to ORSO to get ORSON, another well-known name. Or two letters to ORS.

Add a letter to WILD to get, you guessed it, WILDE.

Add a letter to EEL to Get Howard KEEL.

Add a letter to LYE to get LYLE Lovett.

Add a letter to HEN to get Julie CHEN.

Add a letter to ARF to get ... well ...

Add a letter to WIT to get Loretta SWIT.

Add a letter to ICK to get John WICK.

Add a letter to MAILER to get ... uh, wait, don't add a letter.

Anyway ...

Good wishes to you all.

Hi Y'all! Thanks for the puzzle, Chandi. Thanks, for great expo, Tony.

This puzzle had some teeth in it. Took me 7 minutes longer than yesterday. SHARKS are over-rated as an interesting animal, me thinks. Didn't enjoy the theme. Won't watch SHARKS on TV.

DNK: WEES

WEEP: my poor daughter called me last night WEEPing so hard, I could hardly understand her. She had two little dogs who were her "babies" for over 13 years. The second one died yesterday less than a month since the first died. This year she also lost her beloved Mother-in-law and a dear friend. Sorrow overload. Mama can only listen. Those dogs had a really good life.

Wonderful Wednesday. Thanks for the fun, Chandi and AnonT.
I saw the SHARK theme (although entering Tank for the TV show made a mess of the SE corner (muddied further by Guyanans and Ouch).
But officially a FIW because I guessed a C instead of a G for that Natick cross of GOLLUM and GAY. I see that I am not alone.

More hands up for Tease before TAUNT, Sake before SOJU.
BLIGE was unknown but perped. Same for COHN.
I had no problem deciding between Scar or SCAB since a scrape rarely is severe enough to leave a scar.

I noted LEGOSET one column to the left of EGOTIST., and EEL crossing STEEL.

I smiled at your Add a Letter, Jayce.

Wishing you all a great day.

Anon@ 12:54, yes, near Wheaton. Many, many connections to Wheaton. In fact two of my neighbors, a husband and wife taught at Wheaton North. Don't want to get too detailed about that, out of respect for their privacy. If you went to North, as many of my friends did, you would know of them.

Jayce, re: your expansion of WILD to Wilde. The other night I watched a film noir with Cornel Wilde and Gene Tierney, "Leave Her To Heaven." I knew her name mostly from the episode when Hawkeye Pierce mentioned her in "M*A*S*H", which kinda ties into your Loretta Swit expansion of WIT. Hawkeye was smitten by Gene Tierney's great beauty.

Tante, as D-O said, Rockford is a good bit farther out than where I am. DW has cousins out there that we only see at the big family events. However, one of our lovely regulars is originally from northern Illinois, and may have been much closer to Rockford.

Hi All!

This morning, I got to the office, opened the paper, pulled out the puzzle, and started inking. Hey, wait....

Glad y'all enjoyed (most of) the expo. Tip o' the Hat to my fearless-editor (who can name themselves if they like - but they know who they are) who fixed some glaring dyslexic errors.

I'm not as big a fan as WC (or Colbert - have you ever seen him go full-on nerd?) re: Lord of the Rings but (for those who've read it) GOLLUM was a main character -- very much unlike the 37 dozen or so elves, dwarves, and whatnots that you were supposed to keep track of. After 3 tries, I gave up on Two Towers and just moved on to The Return of the King.

D-O: Picard give me hell? Well, then he needs to do it in person (virtually ;-))

Inanehiker - I didn't even think of mathematical-topology! D'Oh! I could have ruined a good joke by explaining it :-)

IM - did you say Netflix DVD? They still do that?
Fun Sullivan video, CED. Thanks!

Ray-O: I don't know how you think of all those dad-puns every day. Kudos.

TTP - Mom schlepped my butt to Wheaton from SPI 6 weekends in a row for her ASL class. Not sure why she was learning it but I paid attention and got a Merit Badge 'cuz I was so good at (simple) sign language. I also remember Mom had a cousin that lived out that way - collected EVERYTHING Coca-Cola (entire basement was a museum!)
BTW - how'd the TexMex turn out?

Cheers, -T
