I didn’t get the gimmick until the reveal- but how appropriate for Super Bowl Sunday (Go Chiefs!). In spite of several proper names that were unknown to me, I managed to FIR, so I’m happy.

Good morning!

Stumbled on a name and earned a FIW. Don't know my Greek myths and wound up with HECYSE. Hey, it could'a been. Bzzzzzt. DOROTHEY and DOUBLE O'S seemed OK. So close, but 'twas not to be. Thanx, Amie (or is it Arnie -- hard to tell with that typeface) and C.C.

HBD Splynter and La La Linda.

FIR very quickly for a Sunday. I only really stumbled around DOUBLEO_ (my American sports knowledge is next to nothing) but I just had to look again at the themers I had to see the repeated OT.

Big Easy said...

I managed to FIR today, noticing all the O's but not the DOUBLE OT. The perps took care of the numerous unknowns, TESSARA, ROTI, HECATE, DOROTHEA, JAMIE (male or female?),IMAM, SCRIM, TUMBLR, NOOM, ELISE, OR DOC, NONA, RHYS

My 'Cheap Digs' were RAT TRAPS before the perps made them POT SHOTS.
Bath mats were NON-SKID until NON-SLIP.
SCENE became the unknown SCRIM.

OR DOC- I know a few ER doctors but have never heard the term OR doctor.
E-BOY- only learned it from last week's puzzle. C.C., your E-BOY and E-GIRL remind me of the line in Rick James' song "Super Freak"- "the kind you don't take home to mother".

Super Bowl tonight. Overhyped and the bookies will make a bundle, as they take a cut whether they win or lose. Moi? Never bet a nickel on any sporting event and only bought a lottery ticket ONCE, when it was over a billion.

Stay safe and stay warm.

Good Morning:

I glanced at the title but apparently it didn’t register because I had no idea what was going on, despite noticing the abundance of O s and T s, therefore, the reveal was a big surprise and a timely one, to boot. The themers were all solid, in-the-language phrases and Football Mascot was a nice touch, even though Staley Da Bear was a total unknown! There were the usual Sunday-grid pesky unknown proper names, to wit, Baja, NOOM, Elise, Hecate, Iman, Dorothea, and Nona, as clued. I believe my only w/os were Creed/Motto and Ortho/OR Doc. I must say, though, I have never been to a wedding that featured a Photo Booth. As CC mentioned, there were some clever clues and surprisingly, for a Sunday grid, there was not the usual barrage of three letter words.

Thanks, Amie, for a super Sunday solve and thanks, CC, for the usual insider’s viewpoint and for the photos of the yummy looking food. Your cultural references are always a treat, as well.

Happy Birthday, Splynter. Hope you new job is going well. πŸŽ‚πŸŽŠπŸŽ‰πŸŽˆ

Happy Birthday, Linda, we miss you. πŸŽ‚πŸŽπŸŽŠπŸŽ‰πŸŽˆ

FLN

Lucina, please stick with your shade of red hair. Purple hair just doesn’t suit you. (My sister Eileen shares your affinity for the color, though, and her clothes, home decor, etc. leaves no doubt about it!)

PK, I share Anon T’s concern about your nosebleeds. Has the cause ever been diagnosed?

I hope everyone who cares about the Super Bowl enjoys the game, which I hope is not a lop-sided rout. May the best team win! I’m not a faithful fan of either team, but a Chiefs victory would be my choice.

There, Over Time
Two times you'll find.
Ms. ALCOTT has one or two more, besides.

I'm TO TIRED TO THINK of rhymes,
My brain has been working overtime.
It's time at last
For me to CRASH.

Took 18:24 for me to gO To the OTher side.

I didn't know several females in this puzzle (including the photographer, goddess, designer, whatever the Nona is, Iman, etc.), but I knew Spears, Radner, Estee, and Sonia.

Despite a couple clues like "documentary photographer..." it's a good Sunday puzzle.

I hope you all enjoy the Pro Football Championship Game today.

FIW. Had trouble with tessera and couldn't remember alta flour flat bread. Partly understood the theme, but for some reason only saw the T part and not the OT part

TTP said...

Thank you, Amie and thank you, C.C.

Happy Birthday to Splynter and La LA Linda.

Yet another one letter fail. I know his name is SHEL, but I had SHEa for some reason.

Thought about the title "Ten Minutes to Win It" before starting the solve, and saw the OT's pretty quickly. Ten minutes is the standard overtime period in regular season NFL contests. It's five minutes in NBA basketball. So DOUBLE OT would be twenty minutes to win it in pro football, and ten minutes in pro basketball. I like the title either way.

I enjoyed watching JAMIE Oliver on "The Naked Chef" because I liked learning some of his techniques and learning about dishes I'd heard of but never tried. The other reason was that he made recipes in his kitchen, and it wasn't in a production studio or in one of the over the top kitchens found in many homes of the superstar chefs.

I got what I believe to be a spam email yesterday encouraging me to sign up for NOOM. Would have had to enter my credit card info to get the free trial, but was also assured that I wouldn't be charged if I cancelled before the free trial period ended. It came from a top level domain in India. Even if it wasn't a phishing email, I would stay away from NOOM. They are criticized for shady billing practices and auto renewals when consumers try to get out, and have had various lawsuits filed against them for their dubious business practices.

I explored C.C.'s link back to Elizabeth Gorski's August 5th 2012 "Double Overtime" puzzle. I am amazed that she recalled it from over ten years ago. Then I read the comments. That one took me 1 hour and 23 minutes. I posted a comment that day as XVI TP'er (Sixteenth Time Poster). Two weeks earlier I was STP for sixth time poster. It's the one where I admitted that I had become hooked on crossword puzzles.. I was a relative newbie in solving crosswords back then. Soon thereafter Desper-otto asked me to go blue. I think he sensed I suffered from an identity crisis.

Irish Miss, I'm hoping for an Eagles win because I like their team defense, but I won't be disappointed either way as long as it is a good game.

FIW thanks to the crossing of LAKOTA and ALE TAP. Dakota and ade looked OK, but if I had thought more about it, ALE might have struck me as a more likely answer. Thanks, Amie, for a timely Sunday puzzle that I enjoyed.

I too noticed the DOUBLE Os first but after the reveal was partly filled, saw there weren't enough themers with them. HECATE was lurking in my head to confirm we should look for OT. The clue said eight long puzzle answers but I only saw seven. I decided POTSHOTS was included in spite of its length. Anyone else wonder about this?

Thanks, C.C., for your informative review. I appreciated your personal touches and cultural references.

Happy Birthday to Splynter and LaLa Linda (You were before my time but it's nice you still follow the puzzle).
And nice to see your offerings today, OwenKL!

Hope you all have a special Sunday. It's not only the Super Bowl but also our 57th wedding anniversary!

-OMINOUS clouds in the SW sky can send us to the basement
-IMAN the model wasn’t obscure enough for Amie or Patti today
-OTOES are not near me but LAKOTAS are 45-minutes away
-Our Sunday Omaha World Herald used to RUN big ads but now there is practically nothing
-I’ve had RENE on Saturday puzzles where he purports, “This is not a pipe, this is a picture of a pipe”.
-Many Hollywood peeps did JOIN the Communist Party in the 30’s and came to regret it

Puzzling thoughts:

I had a similar puzzle constructed that had as its reveal, "ENDS IN OT" - unfortunately it was rejected by at least two publications, including LATimes

I FIW as the SW gave me fits. Finally hit "reveal word" on my Across Lite puzzle toolbar and filled in a couple of spots

Neither team playing in today's Super Bowl are ones I follow

The countdown to 7-0 began 5 days ago

Puzzling post-script:

Happy Birthday to Splynter and La La Linda - celebrate in style!!

Happy Anniversary to ATLGranny - congratulations!

I had OVERTIME instead of DOUBLEOT as the reveal, and was convinced it was correct, even though I couldn’t figure out the short down answers. I kept thinking EDDA, SOBS, TLC, EON make sense, but they didn’t fit. Bugs me when I make an error like that. Too stubborn I guess.

I like the Eagles today, think they are the more complete team with a great offensive line.

Monkey said...

I was doing just great, I figured out the theme early on, I loved all the clues, then I hit a snag with the crossing of TUMBLR, JAMIE, SHEL, and JOHN (of all names). I looked one up, then letters fell into place, so I guess I FIR.

We have 3 missing Gs today.

I liked Gilda RADNER back when I watched SNL. She died young.

All you football fans, enjoy the game today.

Parsan said...

There are 19 names, but many are obvious. I knew all but 5, IMAN, DOROTHEA, ELISE, OSLIN, and HECATE.

Anyone old enough to remember “Ragtime Cowboy Joe”?
‘’He’s a highfalutin’, ROOTIN’ TOOTIN’,
Son-of-a-gun from Arizona,
He’s some cowboy,
Talk about your cowboy,
Ragtime Cowboy Joe”

Irish Miss - since the Buffalo Bills didn’t survive the play-offs I guess I will be for Philly. Years ago I really was into football because I had many college friends who went on to the NFL. I don’t know any players now so it isn’t as exciting. Anyway, GO BILLS! Will be serving Buffalo Wings!

YooperPhil said...

Not too difficult today, FIR in 35:47, had to make one correction, change the O to an A in the NONA/AHS crossing. Appropriate puzzle for Super Bowl Sunday, although only once has the game even gone to a single overtime, LVII. Thanks Amie!

C.C. ~ thanks for your informative write-up, always enjoy your food pictures! Was curious about your red scarf reference so I looked up the significance. Found a book titled “Red Scarf Girl”, written by one Ji-Li Jiang, about growing up in China during the Cultural Revolution, was wondering if your experiences were similar, as you mentioned a lost childhood.

jfromvt ~ I agree, the Eagles have a really good O-line, can give Hurts lots of time in the pocket (without a holding call!), or open holes for the rushers…OTOH, Mahomes is a great leader who doesn’t get rattled. I just hope for a good game and maybe win a pool $$.

DOROTHEA LANGE should be known to everyone, even if you did not know her name.

Is there anyone who has never seen this memorable photo by DOROTHEA LANGE?

This photo has the title "Migrant Mother, Nipomo, California 1936". DOROTHEA LANGE's photos helped mobilize the country during the Great Depression to vow to end such suffering forever. Have we forgotten?

Parsan @ 12:32 ~ Growing up with a father and four older brothers who were avid (and rabid!) NY Giants fans, years before Buffalo even had a team, I feel no affinity for the Bills, but I would root for them if they were playing today. I’m only partial to the Chiefs because I like Patrick Mahomes. But, as I said, I just hope it’s an exciting, well-played game for all the faithful and devoted fans.

YooperPhil @ 12:37 ~ I’m in a pool, also, but I never seem to have any luck! Maybe you and I will fare better today! ☘️

Sunday Lurk say...

{B, A+} //maybe I'll end DW's 2/14 poem that way :-)

I'll have what Steve is taking... Dang, Bro, your lookin' good. Seriously, what's your secret?
*please don't say exercise | please don't say exercise* :-)

Good to see you too Splynter. A Happy Birthday wish your way.

LaLa - I hope you're getting better. We miss your voice at The Corner.

HG - That you're seeing former students all grown-up as professionals boggles me. As a 'nomad' it's weird to think of living in one place and knowing all the same people your whole life. It's also a beautiful thought. I'm only in touch with 6 people I've known since grade-school and 3 of them are my siblings and two are my parents.

You just stand still and wait for us ATLGranny. DW & I have #33 coming up next week. Happy Anniversary and I hope he doesn't spill beer on you. //it is game day after all :-)

eBoy - I thought it was EMO(tional)-Boy/Girl. I was on the horn w/ Eldest an hour ago and I asked. She said "Electronic. But yeah, they can kind of come off as emo. I get that vibe too." So there, C.C., you again learned me again.
//BigE - bringing up Super Freak made me a) laugh b) get funky

TTP - I'll second you on a) JAMIE wasn't naked, but his recipe production was 'all out there.' That's what made the show (and food) so good. b) NOOM is a scam - Promises. Promises. [cue Naked Eyes* (not a good song but apropos)]. Want to look / feel good?,,, I'm still waiting on Steve's response :-)
//c) check your email later today - I'm way over-thinking something and may need your help

IM - I have no dog in the fight nor money on the game. I just want to watch some good scrimmage, see some funny ads, and enjoy a beer. But!, I have to finish yesterday's chores first.

Cheers, -T

ATLGranny, congratulations to you and your husband on your 57th anniversary !

Yooper, I think you meant that Super Bowl LI was the OT game. Oh, and what you and jfromVT said about the offensive line.

Dash T, I haven't heard that song in a very long time, but it is apt ! Yes, did most chores yesterday, and this year I'm staying out of the kitchen so I can enjoy the game.* What's on the menu today ? Friday, I got a big bucket of chicken wings that will heat up nicely in the air fryer. Then I made 4 chicken breasts in the oven for fajitas Friday night, and possibly quesadillas today. Plus she likes slices of chicken in her salad, so she could fend for herself. But then, unbeknownst to me, she decided to stop at Costco on the way home and while there, decided to pick up a whole spit roasted chicken ! So we're having chicken.

I hosted my last SuperBowl party for XLV - Steelers v Packers in 2011. I missed most of the game because I was constantly baking and serving all the different finger foods I had prepped the day before. I severely underestimated the time impact. Sadly, the Steelers lost, and I decided then that was going to be the last one I would host. Well, there was another major reason that I decided to not host again, but I won't go into that here.

I'll look for your email later, and try to be timely with a response.

I was doing fine until I got to Pismo Beach. Finished the other assorted holes, then went back to Pismo. Still couldn't progress. Gave up and googled, replaced bligh with PELEG, and the rest fell. (No one has ever called me Captain PELIG.) Erased epochs for BIOMES,naan for ROTI, boob for BOOR, and back for HOME.

A buddy once showed me a web site with a section dedicated to people (mainly women) being naughty in wedding PHOTO BOOTHs. Like everything else involving a camera, never think that it (especially your privates) will remain private.

In the NFL, there can't be double OTs in the regular season. The single OT is 10 minutes long, and the game is a tie if not won outright. In the playoffs, each OT period is 15 minutes, and the game doesn't end until there is a winner. So in the NFL, there can't be a double OT that is "ten minutes to win it." Amy and Patti would have been better served by leaving "gridiron" out of the clue, or to use (W)NBA, where double overtime is indeed ten minutes.

Love me some K.T. Lang, but don't know OSLIN's music.

I wanted "sawbones" for surgeon, but it wouldn't cut it.

JOHN Lewis left a legacy of making a difference in race relations in America. His grace and dedication made admirers of even those who disagreed with his policy positions.

Picard, no I don't remember ever having seen that picture, nor the photographer who took it.

Thanks to Amie for the fun challenge that was just beyond my reach. And thanks to CC for the fun review. Happy anniversary, AtlG.

Thanks Amie fer a Sunday FIR in OT, but at least not DOUBLE OT.

Thank you C.C. the recap. Is that you in the center of the MAO ERA photo?

Some favs:

26A EMBOSS. Clever clue.

27A OMINOUS. Scary clue.

30A ROSS. DNK Bob Ross. He died young and his will was contested by his business partners.

80A RENE. Looks like a peep to me.

82A JAMIE. DNK Jamie and almost NATICKED on this and 82D _OHN. COHN? But just as the OT whistle was about to blow I remembered the great JOHN LEWIS, who died just 2 1/2 years ago.

84A SPEARS. I'm wondering if this fill following immediately after the the first name of BRITNEY's father JAMIE was a coincidence?

4D ELISE. Renee ELISE Goldberry is perhaps better known for playing Angelica Schuyler in the original Broadway cast of the musical Hamilton. In fact she made appearance on the Corner just this past Thursday (see clue 60A).

20A STONY. STOIC -> STONY.

Cheers,
Bill

Irish Miss@ 1:16 - if your father and brothers watched the Giants when I think they did, perhaps you could impress them by telling them you communicate with someone who was a close friend of Sam Huff. I knew him from age 14 when our small schools competed against one another on the gridiron. First NFL player on the cover of Time magazine. He used to represent a cigarette company at “smokers” on the off season. The were paid low salaries to play football and had to find jobs for the rest of the year. Cigarettes! How far we’ve come. Unfortunately, like others he died with dementia.

This was a fun, steady Sunday solve- just moving down the fill for me. Needed the reveal to explain all the O's and T's.

Fun gimmes - Staley Da Bear - didn't know Staley - but from back in the Ditka ERA the football team is always called Da Bears' - if you're from the Chicagoland area. And they had some memorable skits on SNL https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kBnnon_iZOM
We had some neighbors when we lived in WI who were from Chi-town with the last name Baer - their personalized WI license plate was Da Baers

I thought it was BAJA Fresh was designated as Tex-Mex - since it started in California and the Baja peninsula is just south of California.

I remembered JAMIE Oliver from his campaign to have healthier foods in school lunches
https://www.publicschoolreview.com/blog/jamie-oliver-is-his-food-revolution-changing-americas-public-schools

My kids loved the "Strega Nona" book and all the Tomie DePaola books with his wonderful illustrations growing up~

Well getting close to kick off for this born & bred Chiefs fan (though the 10 years in WI have a little Packers fan as well inside- kept hoping they would meet in a SB)
We used to host the entire youth group and friends for the SB - but tonight will be much quieter.

Thanks CC and Amie!

Delightful Sunday puzzle, Amie--many thanks. And C.C., your Sunday commentaries are always a gift--thanks for those too.

Happy Birthday, Splynter, and you too, Linda. Hope you both had lovely celebrations with friends and family.

Well, as soon as I saw OBSESSED and POTSHOTS, I worried that we weren't going to get any cheerful ROOTIN and TOOTIN in this puzzle. I almost wanted to take the advice to LETS NOT GO THERE because if people CRASHED and we heard their SOBS and their saying IT HURTS, this was going to be a sad Sunday.

But, hey, starting out with INK there had to be some writing or drawing or art somewhere--although it wasn't until the end that we got an ART SCENE. Sure, some of the art might be simple, like things made with knitting NEEDLEs, but if someone can EMBOSS an outstanding design and paint things in OCHRE--that could be pretty good. So let stop by the PHOTO BOOTH and look at those pictures, and then enjoy what little we can here.

Have a good week coming up, everybody.

Well, that was an exciting Super Bowl game and my favorite team won!

Thanks to all of you sending happy anniversary wishes. It's been a Super Day, indeed.

"Pah"? Is that really the sound a tuba makes? I wouldn't fuss if the perp weren't some obscure proper pronoun. (Peleg)

Amazing photographer, Ms. Lange; some of her post-WPA photos are striking as hell. Worth checking out her stuff if you’re not familiar with her.

Very clever theme, this one! “Stretch often named for a leader” had my brain stuck in exercises before I unhooked it and figured it was about time. Then got hung on “Homecoming cry” thinking football (it IS Super Bowl Sunday, after all!) until preps gave me the facepalm moment πŸ˜†ALETAP felt a wee bit wanky, though. Had nooo clue HECATE had multiple faces; all I could think of was HYDRA (my Greek Mythology knowledge is non-existent…). And only ATT saved me for the mosaic piece — we always called ‘em tiles. Managed to FIR although I am in awe of all you folks here that can rip these out in under an hour…

Thanks for an engrossing Sunday puzzle, Amie!
