Sunday March 12, 2023 Robin Stears

Theme: "Excuses, Excuses!" - One word in each common phrase is replaced by its homophone or soundalike, befitting the excuse by the profession in each clue.

Good morning!

Just like last year, d-o overslept on DST day. Haven't used an alarm in at least 20 years, but somehow almost always wake up on schedule. Was cruising along, and then came to a screeching stop. The unknowns TOFUTTI atop IMAPC atop MII were just too much. That area never filled. Further down, I hung onto ARCH (Foot part) way too long, making it hard to see FIND atop ENOS atop BOSCH. As a result, d-o will be doing his celebrating in the abasement. Thanx, Robin and C.C.

Jinx in Norfolk said...

FIR, but erased entry for DOORS, bug for SEW, rbi for AVG, and arCH for INCH. Took forever to accept ENOS; kinda gave up and went to the reveal. Huh, it's right.

ALEE was a gimmie, but I usually hear "to weather" instead of aweather.

There was only one SULU, George Takei. Just as there was only one James Bond and one Superman.

NASA high tech? Aren't they using the old Challenger booster engines to get us back to the moon? Maybe they should contract to that guy who bought Twitter.

EGOT made John a LEGEND in his own time (and mind).

Gotta go, sun is coming up. Next stop Fayetteville.

Thanks to CC for the fun, and comparative language lesson. Very interesting.

Fun theme! I thought it would just be about adding random Es, when I got the POINTE themer. I think I've seen TOFUTTI and IMAPC in a crossword before, but MII I did know (puns! It comes from "Wii" - the console which probably shouldn't be in the clue - and "me", because it's customizable). Then Nintendo decided to bring Miis to the 3DS and still keep the name "Mii" - so the pun was just gone.

FIR, but had to change Irani to Omani early on. The tofutti and mii section had me flummoxed for a while until the perps set me straight. It's been a while since I heard the phrase "I'm a PC". Very clever theme, and enjoyable Sunday puzzle.

Anonymous said...

Finished this one in 15 minutes even today.

For someone who isn't a big fan of themes (and much less of circles), I really enjoyed this theme.

Keeping my streak alive, I did not know today's actresses (Enos & Ruth). "Imapc" took a long time to parse.

Fun puzzle.

Robin Stears said...

Hello puzzlemates! I had no idea that TOFUTTI would be so difficult. My kids are veg*ns, so I know all about the tofu- foods, like TOFURKEY/TOFURKY. I had a feeling that MII might be tricky, which is why I included the Wii in the clue.

The theme was inspired by a meme I saw in a Facebook group called The Punitentiary. It was a picture of Gregorian monks with the caption, "I always wanted to be a Gregorian monk, but I never got the chants." Then someone commented, "I always wanted to be a doctor, but I never had the patients." That Facebook group literally wrote some of the entries in the puzzle. "I always wanted to be rich, but I never had the cents" did not make the cut.

Fun fact! Three actors have played Hikaru Sulu in the "Star Trek" universe: George Takei, John Cho and Grant Imahara. Happy solving! :D

Good Morning:

When a Sunday puzzle has the right ingredients, it’s a joy to solve and today’s has it all: a fun theme, some clever cluing, strong, in-the-language themers, minimal unknown or obscure fill, just-right difficulty level and, impressively, only 16 three letter words. My three unknowns, Ruth, Tofutti, and Tosh, and my two w/os, Rita/Ruth and Scam/Spam/Sham are well below the average Sunday solving experience. I liked all the phrases but Never Got The Chants was my favorite.

Kudos, Robin, for a very enjoyable and satisfying solve; enjoyed reading your interview, as well, and thanks, CC, for the overview and insight of a pro. Hope you’re managing okay dealing with that amount of snow. It was nice to see Tom Pepper’s byline in yesterday’s other paper.

FLN

PK, you might want to add some Iron supplements, if tolerable. I hope you feel better as each day passes.

I finished watching the last three episodes of The Gilded Age last night. I really enjoyed it and am hoping there will be another season. Some of the scenes included Newport, Rhode Island which was where many of the wealthy families of that era summered at their “cottages”.

Have a great day.

Looked bad during the across run, but the downs started coming in very nicely. Came to a screeching halt in the vegan zone. Tofutti?? ImaPc?? Wii? Other than that, it was a fun puzzle with some really clever clues. ALEE was also a gimme for me (hi, Jinx!) Thanks to C.S.Forrester & O'Brian novels of the Great Age of Sail.

Monkey said...

Great puzzle. I loved the theme because it made me think and laugh. Thank you Robin for revealing your inspiration. Yes, the TOFUTTI/IMAPC/MII was the last section to fill, but big WAG got it done. So FIR.

I don’t know what happened to me this morning but I was convinced we were supposed to set our clocks back so I set the few clocks I have then checked my IPhone and got a shock. In my not fully awake confusion, I decided Apple got the time wrong. I knew that was going to be all over the news. I was more than confused, I was delusional. I so dislike this time change.

I hope everyone else stayed sane.

Hola!

This was fast and fun! Thank you, Robin Stears. I loved all the puns.

I've never heard of TOFUTTI but then I'm no vegan.

ENIAC was once a common puzzle entry but had not seen it in a long THYME.

My mother made SUN TEA every day during the summer but I am not a big tea drinker so I don't make it. I probably would make it if I could add sugar but that's a no, no for me.

NEVER GOT THE CHANTS has to be my favorite.

Have a lovely Sunday, everyone!

Hi folks! I’m late today. Went to church early, like I usually do, because it’s one of the only two times a week I see my best friend at the church, Larry. As to the puzzle, I don’t have too much to say that other people haven’t already said. I found the theme clever, enjoyable and easy to suss. FIR, so I’m happy.

Big Easy said...

Jorts? We used to call them 'cut off jeans', from when you outgrew your pants and wore them in the summer. Never heard of Jorts or many other clues in the puzzle but it was easy to FIR.

C.C. is wearing JORT JORTS in her photo.
SUN TEA- anybody else remember Don Meridith and Willard Scott in the Lipton Sun Tea commercials about 30 years ago?
It took a few perps before I understood the Sugar shack clue.

I live on MELROSE DRIVE, not Place and am always making sure people abbr as DR., not Pl.

RUTH, MII, BOSCH (spark plugs), ENOS (Slaughter), DOJA Cat, SKA by Mighty Mighty Bosstones, ORE in Catan, TOFUTTI, CHO, TOSH- unknowns today.

And with those unwise words of wisdom I'll just "Boot Sccot Boogie" outta here by Brooks and DUNN.

Thank you, Robin Stears, and thank you C.C..

Hand up, it was really good to get those extra hours of sleep today ! :>)
Not so much for my solve. I had MiLROSE / iLSA.
Thanks for the fun, Robin and C.C.

I made pork schnitzel yesterday, along with spätzle and a vegetable cheese medley. Unfortunately I ran out of CANOLA oil while pan frying, but a little vegetable oil finished the job. My taste buds for that meal was activated the other day when we had KNORR and D-O mentioned their brown gravy mix.

Gotta run.
See all y'all later n'at !

Picard said...

CC Hand up for the lovely I VOTED photo of you. For DW it was last year. But we vote by mail, so no dramatic photo.

Loved this clever theme. Learning moment about "IM A PC". I found some of the ads on YouTube. Amusing.

Here I was in the ATLAS MOUNTAINS

I am guessing my LASCAUX post yesterday was too late to be seen.

CrossEyedDave said...

Fairly straightforward puzzle today, I did get sidetracked during CC's write up at the soap molds however. I am fascinated by how an artist can carve such decorative details into wood, so I went down the YouTube rabbithole only to be disappointed. The only thing YouTube had was how to's done with a Dremel power tool, which left me wondering how CC's Grandma got her hands on power tools? I have saved several vids to watch later as there are all over an hour long.

Here is a repost, for those who may not have seen it. Graham Nash being interviewed reveals how he came to write "a song before I go" @ 3:30, and plays it at the end.

TOFUTTI atop IMAPC atop MII took awhile only to misspell CROUCH not CROTCH and mess up TOFUTTI spelling. Oh well. I enjoyed the straight forward puzzle. I enjoyed the voting pick. GC

Super Sunday. Thanks for the fun, Robin and C.C.
No Excuses today. I FIRed (online so I know my 38 minute time, vs. AnonSS who did it in 15!) and smiled at all the themers.
Much more enjoyable for me than yesterday. (LOL, PK, can’t I use my Canadian disadvantage excuse anymore? - I got HMOS, ELON and IVIES today!)

I had a sea of white on my first pass Across, and I didn’t even try to fill the themers then. The Downs were more friendly, and provided enough perps to get things flowing. (I see Charlie Echo had the same experience.)

I was introduced to DOJA Cat Streets yesterday.
I’m not familiar with TOFUTTI, but we have had MII here previously.
At least it was SUP today, and not S’up!
But I have read the Connelly novels and knew BOSCH.

We had SHIN, LATS, WAIST, CROTCH, BODY to go with our DENIM, DRESS, and SKIRT. (We had SEW if you needed a garment made, but “give a darn” wasn’t mending but CUSS! Good one!)
I wanted that foot to be a body part, and had Arch before INCH. (I see that I am not alone)
I noted ASH, SASH and NASH.

Am I dating myself to say that I thought of Peyton Place before MELROSE. But the decade and number of squares were wrong.

I had Ones in my American till (a Canadian till would have Loonies), but TENS were needed to make change.
Ice TEA did not match the clue as well as SUN TEA.

Wishing you all a great day.

FLN: I don't wanna talk about it. Six of my grandchildren just "stopped by" for the day and I got distracted. That's my EXCUSE and I'm sticking to it.

This puzzle I liked and thanks for that Robin - no EXCUSES needed. I like your comment in the interview - "I want everyone who solves one of my puzzles to be able to finish it and enjoy that feeling of a job well done." Refreshing!

And thank you C.C. for the recap. See also 30A.

Loved the theme puns. You never know whether or not you can do something unless you try it (and sometimes fail ☹).

Favs:

1A JORTS. Never 'eard of 'em.

21A ESAU. When is the long suffering JACOB ever going to find his fill?

22A RUTH. We saw her in an Agatha Christie mystery (I think), where she commits the perfect crime, and then gets away with it. Searched high and low and couldn't find it.

30A VOTED. You probably don't realize it but I'm sure literally millions of people around the world are glad you came here (Cornerites, other constructors, editors, solvers (of all your puzzles everywhere), and friends). And I hope your picture outside the polling booth inspires a greater percentage of Americans to exercise their citizenship by voting.

60A E FLAT. Beethoven's Symphony No. 3 "The Eroica" marked the end of the Classical Era and the beginning of the Romantic Era in Western music. Nothing would ever be the same after it.

Cheers,
Bill

Now that I slept some more, I feel much better and the coughing seems to have stopped. (Secret) Between you and me, I took a double dose of my great-grandson's cough medicine and it seems to have helped. I'm not coughing anymore. At least not at the moment. I do plan to buy some adult medicine.

Later this week I'll have to go and have blood drawn so if anything is going on the analysis should expose it.

waseeley: if only six of your grandchildren stopped by, does that mean you have many more?

JORTS is a new term for me. Like others here, we wore cutoff jeans as teenagers but never called them JORTS.

Picard:
I meant to comment on your Lascaux photos but failed to do so. They are impressive! I had hoped to one day visit that site but likely never will.

A Sunday FIR in spite of some serious slowdowns that finally I puzzled out. Hand up for arCH/INCH, CRease/CROTCH, lIcE/MITE, and hInTS/GISTS. But my biggest problem was trying to make HAVEN'T had WHAT I KNEAD work with the perps. Thanks, Robin, for an excellent puzzle and for coming by to comment!

I really liked the theme and found it helped with the fill. PUN fun is my favorite kind. Thanks, C.C., for your review this week. Well done! I liked your photo and you look just the same after 13 years. TOFUTTI did come to my mind though I haven't eaten any. I make ice cream regularly so that's what we have.

C Eh, I thought of ones before TENS and Peyton Place before MELROSE too but waited before entering them in, for a change. I did put slice/CRUST for pie feature and now I am hungry for pie! I have a CRUST in the freezer waiting to be rolled out and baked. Maybe soon.

CED, thanks for the link to Graham NASH's interview. I really enjoyed it.

Picard, like most of us I read the late posts from yesterday first thing today and I looked at your photo. You were fortunate to see the special exhibit!

Hope everyone is having a nice Sunday afternoon!

Fun theme. Nice to read you, C.C. and great snap of your first vote.

DW & I had a date-night in and binged 4 episodes of season 2 of Young Wallander. [Trailer] It's a little slow compared to American TV, but pretty good if you're looking for something else to view.

I only noticed the time change when I saw the oven's time and again when DW & I got in the car to go to the park for our walk & breakfast. The time change won't bother me until I have to wake up for work on Tuesday :-)

JORTS? - The public swimming pool had on their Rules Sign "No Cutoffs." I guess the loose strings would clog the filters(?).

SUN TEA - Gramps made a gallon every day. Always smooth and (too) sweet (he'd add 3/4c sugar).

I have a The Mighty Mighty Bosstones' album Let's Face it. The Impression That I Get is fun.

Robin - of things (and prices!) I see in some catalogues (e.g. Sharper Image), I say, "That's for people with too many dollars and not enough cents [sense]."

Cheers, -T

Lucina and ATLGranny Thank you for the kind words. I am still curious if anyone else has visited either the real LASCAUX CAVE art and/or the traveling replica show?

I loved this puzzle, not only because I love puns and wordplay, but also because it was solvable by logical deduction. Well, except for ENOS.
My Dodge DART turned out to be an OMNI, and my FAKE turned out to be a SHAM. Also, EMCEE became HERES.
Hand up for immediately thinking of PEYTON Place and just as immediately knowing it was wrong.
Picard, I enjoy looking at your photos, including last night's.
Since being retired, LW and I have not been particularly affected (news reporters, can you say that word rather than the ugly "impacted," which really more describes a dental or medical condition?) by the twice-yearly clock changes.
To answer my own question, no, they cannot. The term "impacted" is impacted in their brains and they are hardwired to use it. Always.
I remember RUTH Wilson in a TV series called "Mrs. Wilson," in which she played her own grandmother Wilson.
Good wishes to you all.

Thanx RS, for this fun CW. Really creative to get six theme answers in there, and with fun clues, too. Others have already said anything else I might say, so just let me say thanx to C.C. for the excellent write-up. Oh, I did manage to FIR....in a very long time, but a FIR none-the-less. I spent most of today watching MLB spring training games, to see how the new rules would work out, and I can say, "THANK YOU, THANK YOU, Bud Selig and Rob Manfred, for speeding up the game. I had almost completely quit watching MLB, because I was tired of yelling, "THROW THE @$#!&% BALL ALREADY!!" at the pitcher on TV. I would only wish for one more "Speed up the game" rule: the batter gets three foul balls, then the fourth one is a strike.

Delightful Sunday puzzle, Robin, many thanks. And your Sunday commentary is always a pleasure, C.C.--thanks for that too.

Well, as soon as I saw DENIM, I figured we were going to be dealing with clothing in this puzzle. Since we have both men and women--ESAU and RUTH and STEPH and ELSA and others--we'd have to look for both MEN's and women's outfits--for example, one that might fit a PRIORESS but also one that would look good on the BODY of a LAD. Well, that DRESS will sure look good on a lady, with a SASH to put around the WAIST, and maybe have the dresser SEW some ornaments on as well. We'd better not talk about men's clothes, but we might encourage them to shave their CHIN. But maybe that would be NO HELP at all. Well, lets just go to the DEN to get some treats to eat instead, maybe some soup to SUP, or some SUN TEA to SIP, followed by some dessert with a tasty CRUST and flavored with THYME. That's bound to LIFT all our spirits.

Have a lovely Sunday evening, everybody.
