Personally, I’d don’t care for the new “format” change. It looks ‘unwieldy’ to me, at least at this point.

Some changes are for the better, some not. This new format falls into the latter category, IMO.
Continuing on in my bad humor, a cute theme and reveal was spoiled for me by the abominable Stales, which I'm still shaking my head at. Dashi and Had A Gas weren't exactly pleasing either, Dashi being unknown and Had A Gas so dated it's almost archaic.
Joe's puzzles are usually fun, enjoyable solves, but not today, for me, due to above mentioned flaws. My overall reaction is One Bad Apple Spoils the Whole Barrel. 😔

Seemed a little crunchier than a usual Tuesday grid as it took me 18 minutes for the FIR. Perps got me ALMS, LADDER STITCH, MAZIE and EEYORE (after which I had to look up “dolorous” which is not in my vocabulary). Like anon SS I did know CLIVE and ROSIE. The “D” in LORDE/DASHI was a WAG. We’ve had a little music education lately, today’s key being G SHARP. Have only seen “stale” as an adjective, not as a verb, in past tense or present participle. The BIG TEN (stylized B1G) hasn’t had ten schools for a while, with expansion to the west coast including Oregon, Washington, USC and UCLA there are now 18. ENTOMOLOGY was a cool word to see in a puzzle. DW just used a ZESTER yesterday en route to making a Greek marinade, filling the house with a most pleasant scent. Thanks Joe D for the clever grid and Hahtoolah for your delightful recap!

FIW. Today's puzzle had some crunchiness to it. Unusual for a Tuesday, more fitting for a Thursday, but that's been a pattern so far this week.
Didn't know GSN, and thought B-sharp made sense. Although stales still doesn't make sense to me.
Took a WAG at dashi and got it right. Crossing with Lorde was just mean.
I got the theme and it was clever. But overall I did not enjoy today's presentation. Yuk!
I thought SSA crossing PSU was cruel.
Had a lot of issues with this one.
Never have I heard anyone say "Had a gas" . Also crossing Lorde with Dashi really messed up this corner for me. , using Elfinto describe someone petit and playful is just wrong. Counted 20 proper nouns.

Re Five Guys Prices: Had a friend complain his wife and teenage son spent $48 for the two of them. How could that be?!? I hadn’t been there since my own daughter was a teenager (“several” years ago) and I thought it was pricey then. But $48? So I checked the online menu…HOLY COW!!! (that must be what they get the meat from). I’d rather buy a decent bottle of scotch instead.
Anyway, agree with the general sentiment…pretty crunchy for a Tuesday.

Read the Blog every day but don't comment much anymore. My computer has been acting up lately and I thought maybe it was me. I too do not like the new format. I wonder what Ray-O 's comments will look like ?

I too noticed the awkward changes. Maybe I’ll get used to them. TTP said we could go back to the old format but stopped short of saying how.
As for this CW, i started out gang busters, then mid way i started encountering all these unknowns like MAZIE, ROSIE, DASHI. CLIVE is the only know name.
I thought of entering HAD A ball, but didn’t fit. I don’t like the actual answer. The weirdness of the CW distracted from its really neat theme.

do not mix up red oak with white oak for wood projects!
The famous ghost ship, The Mary Celeste, was finally explained by the above mix up. They were carrying barrels of alcohol. Some of which were red oak that leaked creating explosive fumes that blew off the cargo hatch causing the crew to abandon on ship. The ship sailed on but they died somewhere mid ocean. see clip at 2:30 for what and why

FIW with ONE "small square" in box 8 -- wasn't sure which note to pick for the SHARP, and never heard of GSN. Although I did solve 59 Down, "small square," I needed Anonymous at 4:46 AM to explain it.

DH insisted on going to Five Guys a couple of times when it appeared in our neighborhood. Because we're vegetarian, we were limited to peanuts, fries, and condiments on hot dog buns. I've managed not to return, and didn't know it had gotten so pricey.

To me, the search for theme is tied to the enjoyment of the puzzle itself. Today was a non-starter to seek and as revealed, proved true.

Nothing has changed in the format here so I'm not sure what the above complaints are about.
I'll start with my pet peeve which is mispronouncing PEREZ. The accent is on the first syllable, not the second, PE-rez, not pe-REZ. My great-grandmother's maiden name was PE-rez.
Thank you, Joe Deeney, for a nice puzzle. We haven't seen you in a while but it's nice to have one of your puzzles. And I liked seeing MANI-PEDI. I have one about every three weeks. Now that the prices have increased so much ($85!) it might be once a month.
There is A FIVE GUYS place not too far away though I've been there only once; I was not impressed. Wendy's has a much better burger, IMO.
I love the name MAZIE.

Desper-otto, Monkey, that was my attempt at humor.
To all, this is the "new" Comments User Interface (UI) that Blogger started rolling out in late April, early May of 2022.
At that time, many blogspots saw this new UI regardless if they were on their desktops, laptops, tablets and or smartphones. At that time, Crossword Corner only got the new UI on smartphones, and I started reporting the defects on May 1, 2022.
It appears that they have finally rolled the commenting UI out to the Corner for desktop, laptop and tablet users. So it appears we are stuck with it.
Smartphone users will probably not see any differences from what they've had for the last 2.25 years.
FWIW, there is a ? mark in the upper right corner of the comments page. If so inclined, you can express your thoughts about this UI by taking the "Send Feedback" option.
Finally FIR (with red letters!). Today, the clues were not from my universe. No fun, except for Ha2las review.
If Lucina is not seeing the new Comments User Interface, as well as the differences in the formatting of the reader comments on the comments page, then I suppose it is possible that this change has not been rolled out to the servers that handle the western time zones...

I enjoyed the puzzle, even though I thought a few answers were kind of lame - stales, dashi. The theme was cute, as are most of Joe Deeney’s.
Happy Valley always me think of the unfortunate and scandulous finale to Joe Paterno’s illustrious career.
Chapel hill is 12 miles from Duke, my alma mater, and students went back and forth all the time. I love all things Winnie the Pooh, so Eeyore is an old friend. I loved “elfin”. Joe Ddeney always gives us interesting, a bit out of the ordinary clues to keep it interesting.
On my iPhone, the format seems the same. So, why was it changed, and who made the decision? Was it a Cornerite administrator?

Guess a Saturday clue for CHAPEL HILL would "research triangle corner." You and I would autofill it, but I'd bet some would find it to be a stumper.

I haven't noticed anything different about the UI. It all looks the same to me as it has for long time on my PC. I rarely use my Ipad to solve the puzzle and never use my phone.
No problem with PSU and Happy Valley. I happen to live in Happy Valley (Actually it's the Nittany Valley) and I can see the PSU stadium from my kitchen window. It's not always Happy when PSU loses a football game though.
I decided to test for myself whether or not the “format” had gone back to “normal “ and it has! For me and my iPhone. I, for one , hope it STAYS this way, but who knows what time will bring?

Officially a DNF, because I had no clue about the middle letter in that Natick cross of PSU and SSA.
And I had already resorted to two Google lookups to try to break open in the south.
But I did see the Masculine theme, although I had FIVE boYS since I am not familiar with FIVE GUYS hamburgers.
I will claim Canadian disadvantage today with. MAZIE, CIN, BIG TEN, GSN, SSA (I only know SSN,).
Plus the unknown-to-me names like ROSIE, CLIVE.
DASHI was unknown - my Ecktorp thought was Miso. Nope.
I had some nits with clueing also.
TAKEN TO for “become smitten with” seems very awkward, both in meaning and tense.

My Latin was useful today to give me EEYORE. Dolor, Dolores means grief, anguish, sorrow. The Via DOLORosa means Way of Suffering, and is used to describe the route Christ took to his crucifixion.

Mazie, Dashu, GSN, LADDER STITCH, LORDE All came from perps. When I saw the hamburger chain clue, I looked back and for a second thought that maybe I fillded broken record incorrectly, with a BLOKE being a British champ, and then I saw BRO.
I had heard of KEIRA but not how to spell her name. This was the crunchiest Tuesday puzzle I've seen in a while.
My total snake damages have added up to a little over $2,700, so far. I doubt I will file an insurance claim because . it doesn't meet my deductible

Well, when I saw AMPS and G SHARP, I figured we had a music theme for our attention today. But 'twas not to be, although I suppose one does get some music in the CHAPEL in some places. But, oh wait, I just realized we'd probably get some lovely music if we went to see Verdi's AIDA. Yes, that's what we ought to do. And there were a few little critters here and there: a PONY, a PET, and, of course, EEYORE. Good thing this puzzle had a VET (if a veterinarian) too.

Jinx, if you have a suggestion for C.C., I would advise you to send her an email. I don't think she spends much time reading through everyone's comments because she is so busy constructing. I personally doubt that she would consider making such a change, given the time and workload involved. But it is her blogspot, and she might if Blogger becomes untenable.
I know I have had my fill of Blogger, and am on the verge of quitting it altogether. It peeves me to no end that the problems I reported back in May of 2022 about the UI are still unresolved, and yet Blogger seems determined to force it on all users.

I would say about this puzzle pretty much what many of you have already said.
The last cell I filled was the G in GSHARP, not knowing GSN, after eliminating B, C, D, E, and F. It was also an alphabet run to fill that S crossing SSA and PSU.

Monkey, are you on a laptop or a desktop? My laptop has the "new" (circa 2002) UI, and my desktop has the legacy UI that so many of us are used to.
This is so reminiscent of what Blogger did in 2020 when switching from Legacy Blogger to New Blogger, and what they have done with periodic updates. Some of us get the changes, and some do not. This has nothing to do with C.C.'s blog. It is Blogger's method for rolling out and field testing changes.

CED, if you don't like the new format, then press the ? mark in the upper right corner, and then press submit comments to log your complaints. I can't tell you that it will do any good, but you can explain why it doesn't work for you.

FIR this crunchmaster but took quite a while. Solve was much earlier in the day but had things to do and no time to post a comment. By the time I got here the blog looked normal, so I completely missed the upset. Lots of names I DNK, and right dead-center, that "S" was a guess. SSA was all I could think of that might have baby names, but did not know about it. "Happy Valley" rang a bell but darned if I could connect it to a school in my mind. Lots of perps needed today, and lots of burning-o-the-braincells, but eventually got 'er done. Thanx JD for the massive challenge, due to all the names. Thanx Hahtoolah as always an informative and entertaining write-up. YP@8:03 I always check my post for errors before I hit "Publish" but STILL occasionally mess up. When I see embarrassing errors I copy the whole comment, then delete it, repost the comment, make the corrections, then republish. If there was a way to correct already published comments w/o doing all that, I never knew about it. And still don't.
This page looks the same as it has always looked on my iPhone but looks different on my iPad. Yesterday’s looks as it always did on all my devices.
Unclefred, that is the only way. There is no edit except in Preview.

CED @ 6:14. Just FYI... I am looking at the old format of Blogger on my computer and your avatar looks like it always looks.
It seems I am not alone I thinking this was unusually crunchy for a Tuesday. My computer was on the fritz this morning, so I am late in posting.
I'm back and it's now the end of the day and everything still looks the same. However, as always, I enjoyed reading all your comments.
