With “slumber party” I thought we might be in store for a “topical” puzzle. Alas, it was not to be. However, thanks to the circles, I soon sussed out just what the theme was. But this puzzle was fun, and I didn’t think it was all that difficult, either. FIR, so I’m happy.
And speaking of “happy,” Happy New Year to all my friends here on the Corner!

Good morning! And Happy New Year.

I was on Splynter's wavelength this morning with TORSO (CHEST) and SLOE(PLUM). Went one better by spelling EILISH with a Y. Hooray for Wite-Out. This was a nice, easy start to the new year -- smooth sailing. Thanx, Jay and Splynter.

Welp, that was a pretty lame puzzle to start the year. But it could be worse. On a normal Wednesday I would be in my office now instead of in bed in my boxers. On a related theme, do you realize that if we lived on Mercury we would celebrate New Year’s Day every 88 days?! Think about THAT for a minute…

Jinx in Norfolk said...

FIR, and for the first time this year I erased "seed." Seems like only yesterday... Also swan->UGLY and ecru->OPAL. Since when is OPAL a shade? DNK ALI, FOOL US, BLAIR, ELISH or OLDS. One of those times when I didn't enjoy a FIR. Irish Miss, I think our "good puzzle" streak stopped at one.

I had a 1967 Mustang fastback that looked almost identical to the one Steve McQueen drove in Bullitt. His was a '68 because it had side reflectors in the front. Mine was a 289 two bbl, hardly a MUSCLE CAR. But my buddy had a '69 Mustang coupe with a 390 4bbl, a classic MUSCLE CAR.

I'm not much into hullabaloos, but I do loves me some HOOHA.

Quite coincidentally, after learning the phrase "ride or die" here a few days ago, I came across the phrase in the James Patterson / Maxine Paetro book The 23rd Midnight.

Hope that BE and everyone he loves are OK in NOLA. A perp intentionally mows down as many people as he can in his car, then when he can't go farther he hops out and starts shooting. The FBI says there is an IED on the scene. Then the FBI spokeswoman tells everyone to stay away from Bourbon Street "until we can figure out what is going on," right after stating "this is not a terrorist event." What the hell has happened to our once trusted FBI?

Thanks to Splynter for the fun review. Loved the LASS dancing with the bagpipes, but I suspect that not a note in the video was played by her. I don't think Ozzie has to worry about the competition. Also, I'll add Herzog to my list of authors to look for in my favorite used bookstore.

Wednesday puzzle. Enjoyed the fill. I’d have drown without those dreaded Os…..Greet the day.

Took 7:03 today for me to PONDer this one.

The Bourbon Street murders are horrific, no matter which labels are applied or not applied.

I hope everyone has a happy, health, prosperous, and fun 2025.

Oh joy, circles!

Happy New Year! My first thought was wondering if anyone would reference the colloquial meaning of hoohah, thanks for saving me Jinx. A mostly easy puzzle, though i am not a fan of these interspersed letter themes. We had a '67 Cougar when we were in college driving the 19 miles to the Storrs campus.
The South Carolina flag has a symbol reminiscent of Islamic flags. Why?
Having spent yesterday with my oldest boy, his wife and three children, I would say you did miss out RM, kids are great and grandkids are spectacular.
Every time I see a puzzle by Jay Silverman I am reminded of the great Jay Silverheels. RIP.

FIR. Happy New Year! And having said that we start the year off with circles!
(Groans)
Also a few odd clues, crossing ACLU and Loca, as well as the crossing of two proper names, Eilish and Ali.
(More groans)
But the theme was apparent from the first long answer, so that was a plus.
Overall not the most enjoyable puzzle of the year so far. Let's hope it improves with time!

Glad to help.

My grandson, born and bred in New Jersey, is a freshman at the University of South Carolina (GO COCKS!) He called his mom when he moved into the dorm to let her know that the entire dorm was inundated with giant cockroaches that fly! I told her that he shouldn't be surprised; after all, he chose to go to school in the PALMETTO state. (He and a couple of buds have since moved to an off-campus rental. Turns out that the school plans to tear that dorm down this year, and were reluctant to spend on maintenance.)

Jinx in Norfolk said...

What I started to write about was the crescent on the state flag. (Don't ask ol' Jinx for the time, he'll explain how to build a watch.) SC's crescent is a carryover from the flag designed in 1775 for the South Carolina troops fighting in the Revolutionary War. I've noticed that the symbol looks a little like the crescent used on Islamic flags too.

Today's puzzle had a cute theme. As a nautical soul, I was at first taken aback by the idea that a canal could be anywhere near as choppy as a sea or bay, but then I realized that the choppiness here was the words themselves being chopped up.

I found a peculiar situation in the left central, where five proper names--BLAIR, EILISH, SADE, ALI, and ELSA--were inexplicably congregated in a Natick logjam. Only friendly nearby perps like the Colorado Rockies, Penn & Teller, and Palmetto assisted me out of that.

I'm with Lemonade regarding the similarity of the Jay Silverman/Silverheels names. I suspect people think of Silverheels as just the Lone Ranger's faithful companion Tonto, but he appeared in many movies, including the Bogart/ Edw. G. Robinson classic "Key Largo."

Thanks, Jay, for a pleasant and clever New Year's day challenge!

Musings
-A fun puzzle from which to set sail into 2025
-New Year’s resolutions may create a lot of ACHES in the near future
-DUPES: Trick plays in sports can liven up a game
-Not a SMASH: Don't people in a really lousy play or movie realize that it is going to fail?
-CASINOS can DUPE you into thinking the next card, spin or pull will bail you out of trouble
-Bugs Bunny's fast-talking style and nonchalant carrot-chewing were inspired by Clark Gable's character in It Happened One Night
-I hope the welcome return of Lemonade will start a long run in 2025.
-I have never spent a New Year’s Day without FB and the Rose Parade. Attending the latter was on my bucket list and did not disappoint!

A WATERed-down puzzle - was hoping for something more topical than the parting of the SEAs for New Year's Day.

To expand a bit on my personal journey to acclaimed part-time puzzle commentator over the past year:
1) Lurker
2) Anonymous poster
3) Handle chosen
4) Avatar selected
5) Live to see Splynter use 4LW at my suggestion
Can't wait to see what happens next!

Wishing all a wonderful 2025!!

Good Morning:

The water theme was evident early on, but the Choppy Waters reveal was a surprise and quite clever, IMO. I, like others, went astray at Torso/Chest and also Lasso/Riata. Blair was the only unknown and the overall solve was smooth and quick. The themers were strong and solid and the solve was a Wednesday level difficulty, despite the circles, which I think were necessary, but perhaps not.

Thanks, Jay, for starting the new year off in a pleasing manner and thanks, Splynter, for the entertaining expo. Is Cooper a new addition to your life? He’s quite a handsome fellow!

Happy New Year to all.

YooperPhil said...

Managed a FIR in 10:19, saw the theme after the second entry but I didn’t really use the circles in the solve, would have been a challenge to decipher the “CHOPPY WATERS” without them. I knew all the names except BLAIR and OLDS, and I know Anna’ sister is EL__, but I always need perps cuz I never remember if it is Elle or ELSA. Nice to see HOO HA make another appearance, I can think of a lot of synonyms other than hullabaloo but none would get past the censors. Thanks Jay for starting off the CW year and to Splynter for your critique and analysis.

As the French might say “Eau, the theme is bodies of, water, oh”

Inkover: seed/SOIL

”Under the Yum-Yum Tree” 1963 sex RomCom with Jack Lemmon (laughable by today’s standards)

It shows up so much I almost put sloe for purple fruit before PLUM

SADE (SHAH-day) not related to the Marquis de. 1991 hip hop song “OPP”(“Other People’s Property). Didn’t t realize OPAL is an off-white shade nor quite get the STAR clue. Know Penn & Teller but not “FOOL US” (fooled me)

Haven’t seen RIATA in awhile. First time ever was in a puzzle, almost never lasso or lariat

You might wanna drink a few IPAs before you invest in some IPOS

I thought Yeti, Bigfoot, Sasquatch and the Abominable Snowman (know to his friends as AB) were all the same guys, just lived in different places. Expected the name of a show cuz SMASH would be a great title for a Broadway production. How could it fail ☺️

The bad boy actor ___ Le Boeuf is part Jewish, not Muslim ___ … SHIA (of all the states to have a Muslim symbol on their flag 😆 plus the palm tree, like it’s a member of the UAE)
Good name for a loud girl ____ …. BLAIR
Describes the state of Hawaii …. EILISH

2025 a notable year, both DW (February) and I (May) turn 75. And in August our 50th anniversary almost as important as “…”and live from New York” 50th for SNL (October)

Happy and healthy New Year. 🙂

Hola! Happy New Year! Thanks to Jay Silverman for ushering in 2025. I hope LOCA is not a prediction of what it will be like. I love the COLORADO ROCKIES, the mountains, that is, and spent five happy years there including some time in a cabin one Thanksgiving weekend.
CHOPPY WATERS is exactly why I will never go to sea for any reason.
My first car was a Maverick but I don't think that is considered a MUSCLE CAR.
Thank you, Splynter, for leading the cheers today. What a lovely dog! I miss having a dog but not enough to actually have one.
Enjoy your day, everyone! One of the stores has special sales today so I'll go take a gander and might, might buy something since I have a gift card.

NaomiZ said...

Like Jinx at 7:37 AM, I was puzzled by OPAL as an off-white shade. My mother's opals were a mix of blues and greens, with flashes of fiery red! It turns out that there is a "white opal" shade used especially to describe a color of glass used in lamp shades. Who knew?

I enjoyed today's easy puzzle, but it almost felt like we could have picked bodies of water out of any long answers. I'm sure it's much harder to construct than it seems!

Cooper is a cute dog! Looks like an Australian shepherd to me. A four footed friend of yours, Splynter?

Thanks, Jay and Splynter. Happy new year, everyone.

Not a good morning in NOLA. I'd worked the puzzle before I heard about the whacko/terrorist running down people on Bourbon Street. Definite information is sketchy but my son, who is a police captain in another city, said the FBI, LA State police and NOPD are withholding announcing what info they have until they are definite.

Noticed the water but not the CHOPPY WATERS. DNK BLAIR, EILISH, or that OPAL was a color; perps took care of them.

FOOL US- one of the only shows I watch on TV. Some of the magic acts are unbelievable. Penn and Teller can usually figure them out in 30 seconds but get fooled about 1/4 of the time.

Monkey said...

FIR, with help from perps for many of the names. I figured out the theme early on but didn’t notice that the words were CHOPPed apart. Nice.

I had no idea what Acr. stood for until the clue OPP filled itself in. OPAL is an unusual answer for off-white shade.

I noticed this series of FLWs all ending in the same vowel, LOCA, ESTA, FETA, ELSA, BAJA, BETA.

Thanks Splynter for á nice recap and the dog picture. We always like dog pictures.

Happy and healthy 2025 to all.

I got "Colorado Rockies" right away and "muscle car" since I have a 64 1/2 Mustang I painstakingly restored. I knew South Carolina's state tree. As soon as I had "Rh" rhymes was easy. All in all not difficult. I was hoping for something a little more in theme with the new year. I enjoyed your recap Splynter.

Jinx in Norfolk said...

So you're saying OPAL's a shade shade. Clever.

The only reason I know of Billie EILISH is that she was featured on "Sunday Morning with Jane Pauley". She is a talented and quirky girl, maybe even a genius and they are often strange when compared to the rest of us.

Delightful puzzle today, many thanks, Jay. And it was nice to see a picture of that sweet dog, thanks for posting that too, Splynter.

Well, this puzzle had a sad beginning with those ACHES in the CHEST requiring a PILL to stop the OUCH, and make it possible to rest and SLUMBER a bit. How great then to wake up in the New YEAR, with time to celebrate and start a new life with a breakfast of RYE bread and FETA cheese and maybe a plan to go to a CASINO. But, hey, it would be better to stay home with family, and have PAPA get the KIDS some TOYS to play with, and some PLUMS to munch on, and some words to turn into RHYMES. That could turn the first day of the New Year into a SMASH. Congratulations!

And have a wonderful HAPPY NEW YEAR day, everybody, and with a healthy and happy and productive 2025 ahead!

CanadianEh! said...

Wonderful Wednesday. Thanks for the fun, Jay and Splynter (great catch on the Jay RHYMES).
I FIRed in good time and saw the CHOPPY WATERS.

Hand up for Seed before SOIL.
Home was too short for “where the heart is”, but CHEST was a better cavity size.
I entered Lasso, thinking that we hadn’t seen RIATA for a long time. Perps reintroduced it. I learned the word early in my CW days here.(about the same time that I learned EPEE).

This Canadian now knows RBG and ACLU (but I didn’t know the correlation).

Great catch, Monkey, on those 4LWs (glad to have you with us RustyBrain) ending in A. May I add SHIA and PAPA, plus 5LWs LLAMA, HOOHA, CHINA, the aforementioned-mentioned RIATA, and 6LW CICADA, plus LAH -di-dah for the same sound. And SRA is the abbreviation for señorA.

Ray-o - Congratulations on this year of celebration for you and DW.

Thoughts and prayers for those in NOLA.

Wishing you all a great day and a Happy New Year.

Enjoyed the theme. Hand up TRACTS OF LAND only means one thing. Same for HOOHA.

Here Merlie lounged in our JACUZZI with the JETs on with our friends Pali and Raven.

Thanks for that wonderful video of the LASS playing Crazy Train on the bagpipes. Can you please tell us more about your Monty Python wedding? Are you married now?

From Last Year:
Jinx Thanks for the further explanation about your APPLE windfall. I am still puzzled over the odd amount of the final selling price.

Arrived back home after dropping the last family members at the airport in KC and drove the 2 3/4 drive home, so a quiet moment to do the puzzle after a week+ of family and busyness. I'll miss all the baby snuggles and 3 year olds' "discussions"

Creative theme - from the circles I could that they were bodies of water - but chuckled at the theme reveal

I knew RBG worked for the ACLU from the movie biopic about her, "On the Basis of Sex" - really well done
My first car was a '68 black & red Mustang - but it was small and cute - it didn't really look like a "MUSCLE CAR"

Prayers to all affected by the NOLA crash and shooting
And hope 2025 is a good year for you all!

Thanks to Jay (not Kay or May, say)! I liked the clever theme. FAVs were COLORADO ROCKIES and People person?, but I didn't even see the latter until I read Splynter's recap.

You'd be hard-pressed to see a RIATA at a rodeo. Rodeo cowboys prefer nylon ropes. The alliteration is fun but, unfortunately in this case, inaccurate.

RustyBrain. I liked your progression explanation. Many of us can relate....

Thanks to Splynter for taking on two holidays in a row! I'll say it again, Cooper is sooooo cute. Thanks, also, for the LLAMA vs. lama memory trick.

Zippity-Doo-Dah, Monday came on a Wednesday this week: FIR in 10! Nice CW, not too many names and I knew most, including Jacques Chirac. I always liked that name!
