Theme: Pals of Snell - Common S?ELL patterned word leads off each theme answer.

25A: Retail establishment with a mollusk feature as its logo: SHELL STATION.

43A: Word processing feature: SPELL CHECKER.

50A: Imminent winner's whiff: SMELL OF VICTORY.

Those are all the S?ELL patterned common words you can find in a dictionary, I believe. Or can you think of something else?

Argyle here. Four entries but still a weak theme. Ah, it's a Monday. 7 K's though.

Across:

1A: "Outta my way!": "MOVE!". Rude start for a Monday.

9A: Place to store firewood: SHED.

13A: Cereal "for kids": TRIX.

14A: Burstyn of "The Exorcist": ELLEN. She played the part of the mother, Chris MacNeil.

3D: Panorama: VIEW.

4D: Kicked out of school: EXPELLED.

5D: Spheres of influence: REALMS.

6D: Totally wrong: ALL WET. The original allusion in this expression is unclear, that is, how moisture or dampness is related to wrongness. Here's a theory. The newly born of most species are "all wet." So maybe it means ignorant, born yesterday.

7D: The year 1052: MLII.

It was produced by Universal Television and was the first time programming of this nature had been attempted. It proved to be a critical and ratings success and was the forerunner for similar projects based on literary works, such as "Roots" and "Brideshead Revisited".

26D: Bum kin: HOBO. Another bum heard from.

27D: Suffix with exist: ENCE. (existence)

Good morning, C.C., Argyle and all.

This was a fun little puzzle this morning with few challenges. I finished as fast as I could write in the answers and needed very little perp help. This was a good one to start the back to work week after all the Christmas celebrations.

I finished yesterday's puzzle by the time Fox News Sunday was over, and after church, spent most of the afternoon and evening watching how the football playoff picture developed. It is a good day when the Giants lose and the Cowboys beat the Redskins!

Have a good day.

Dick said...

Good morning Argyle, C.C. and all, a very easy fill today. Like tfrank I filled as fast as I could write and, also, did not need much perp help.

Argyle I liked your football opener, it was not what I had envisioned. There is not much to comment about on today’s puzzle so I will get busy with other chores this morning.

Snow and low 20,s today, ugh!

Hope you all have a great Monday.

Mainiac said...

Good Morning Argyle and All,

Wrote everything in with no problems today. A complete opposite of last Friday and Saturday.

tfrank, its going to be an interesting wild card race. Pats are sitting in a decent spot but the rest of the 7-7 teams will make for some interesting conversations on the talk shows this week.

The rain yesterday washed away most of the snow here. It looks like March.

Have a good one.

Anon, I wasn't familiar with skell but I see how it could be pals with SHELL and SMELL but not with SWELL and SPELL. ;-P

I thought today's puzzle went 'verdammt schnell'.

Dennis said...

Good morning, Argyle, C.C. and gang - as others have said, pretty much a fast-as-you-can-write puzzle today with no real issues.

Had a great train trip down, and so far, the weather's been great. There's a "cold front" coming in today and the temps are supposed to drop into the low 70s. The low 70s!! A cold front!! Life is good.

Hope everyone has an outstanding day.

Good morning Argyle, C.C. and all. A pretty easy Monday CW. I did have to g'l for SKOR, since I had sib for SIS. On 43D had a small kerfuffle of my own making when I read the clue wrong: "n" instead of "h" before I caught myself.

Hope you all had a good holiday weekend.

kazie said...

Happy new week to all!
Nice easy Monday with no problems. Over the weekend I didn't even have time to attempt puzzling, as we were having so much fun with our son and d-i-l who stayed over from Thursday on. A really wonderful Christmas. I hope you all had one just as enjoyable. Of course now there's still a mountain of food to get through, in their fridge as well as ours! So much for the diet we need.

Good morning Argyle, C.C. and all,
Easy, breezy puzzle. Had a bit of a feeling of déjà vu. Had RENAL just yesterday, and LUNK.

@Argyle-Thanks for the blog and the links. Is there another name for the Honey Roses? I can't find a recipe or reference. They look like they're made with something similar to a wonton wrapper, fried, then glazed. Mmmm...

Zhouqin (C.C.) Burnikel said...

Kazie et al,
What virus program do you run on your computer? Also, does anyone know what "hprblog.exe error" means? And what exactly is a Malware?

Zhouqin (C.C.) Burnikel said...

Another question: Is my computer unprotected once my McAfee expires?

Spitzboov said...

C.C. "hprblog.exe error" apparently relates to your printer program(s) . You may want to check their support sites. If your McAfee has expired, I doubt you are getting virus definition updates, so your AV protection is relying on older definitions.

I'm running Apple OS X series so AV is not an issue.

"Malware, short for malicious software, is software designed to infiltrate a computer system without the owner's informed consent." per wikipedia.

Spitzboov said...

C.C. Support sites. I meant HP - Hewlett-Packard

Zhouqin (C.C.) Burnikel said...

Spitzboov,
Thanks for the quick response. My HP printer is running fine though. My husband clicked something last night, then his Internet Explorer froze and he could not access any website. My Firefox browser worked OK. How is Malware different from virus or spyware? Also, do I have to buy new McAfee every year? FYI, we are using Windows Vista.

kazie said...

Hi C.C.,
I have Spyware Doctor. I'm sending the info on it to your email address, in case you want to try it.

Zhouqin (C.C.) Burnikel said...

Sharon,
Sorry to hijack the discussion on your puzzle. But my computer is driving me bananas.

MJ & PJB,
Thanks for the kind words yesterday. But it's people like you who contribute immensely to the success of this blog. I am very grateful.

Bill G. said...

Hi everybody. It felt relaxing to have an easier puzzle after last Thursday, Friday and Saturday. I had trouble at first reading 26D correctly. Because of the font, I misread "bum" as "burn" but I got straightened out quickly.

I know I'm being picky but in 56A, the opposite of "all" is not NONE. In logic, the opposite of "all" is "not all"; that is, anything less than all. If all happened to be 10, then the opposite would be anything from zero to nine. No big deal. I certainly figured out what was intended easily enough.

I asked this question once before but didn't get any answers. Since I enjoy the themes, I wonder why the difficult Saturday puzzles don't have one? Is it just traditional? Do the rest of you like the no-theme puzzles on Saturday better than if they had a theme?

It feels nice to be winding down after the holidays. Have a good week.

~ Bill G.

Clear Ayes said...

Good Morning All, As others have said, there wasn't much difficulty in today's puzzle. The few answers that didn't come the first time around, like SKOR and CRINGE were taken care of by perps. I wanted COWERS instead of CRINGE, but I knew that since the clue was just "shrink" and not "shrinks" I had to rethink that fill.

PJB, thanks for the compliment on yesterday's poem. I really liked it too.

I hope C.C. gets the problem(s) fixed. I'm not a computer person at all. I just sit down and expect it to work. Luckily, my son-in-law installs and fixes computers for businesses, so when something doesn't look right, I can call him.

Zhouqin (C.C.) Burnikel said...

Kazie,
Got it. Thanks. I sent a question to you via email as well.

Bill G,
Yep! Tradition, Tradition, Tradition. Themeless Saturday is perhaps as traditional as Topel's role in "Fiddler on the Roof". Like you, I prefer themed puzzles.

DCannon said...

Didn't do Saturday and Sunday puzzles because my right hand was hurting too much. Had to stay away from the mouse and from writing manually.

Today's was probably a '1' or less on the difficulty scale. My only erasure was because my hand slipped and wrote a letter badly. Nice easy start for the week. My guess for the theme was "for the 'ell of it!"

Never had a SKOR. My teeth can't take it.

Argyle, maybe "all wet" is related to being "wet behind the ears" or too young.

Hope everyone had a dandy Christmas. Everything was fine here. Good company, good food.

Have a nice day, y'all. A little Texian lingo there.

For MJ - Thiples That is what I found. The site with the picture is this and it is near the bottom of the page. Very interesting looking site.

"My grandma calls them Manicoat, and I've already heard Dabla and Kundeil."

I couldn't find any reference to these words. Anybody heard of them?

Argyle said...

I found this in the comment section:

"It's actually really simple to make. 1 egg, 1 cup of flour and a pinch of salt for the dough. 1/2kg of sugar, a peel of orange and some water for the honey. You spread the dough til it's as thin as paper. Then you shape flowers using your finger, and dip them in oil for something like 20 seconds each side (while spinning). Then you just dip them in boiling bubbly honey.
They're a dish we make here for New Years evening. It's origin (as claimed by my grandmother) is in Tunis."

Argyle said...

DCannon - I know behind the ears is the last place to dry on new-born calves. Of course, they are all wet when they first emerge.

When I was 16, my mother told me I was still "wet behind the ears". I almost laughed because, although she married a farmer, she was a city girl. I didn't laugh though; I may have been inexperienced but I wasn't dumb.

Anonymous said...

Hmm, relatively simple puzzle today as most of you have commented. Quick theme to get, but not super interesting.

Argyle, I have a son that hates honey. Imagine that. I cannot. Here is a link to Ozzie Ozborne that might make you laugh, as you couldn't bear to link something else. It was from SNL when Dave Matthews was the guest. He plays Ozzie in this scene. Very cute.
SNL The Mellow Show

Nice week just relaxing and hanging in San Diego. Weather is nice compared to the feet of snow in Minneapolis. Saw Avatar yesterday.

CC, do you have a broadband internet connection? With our Comcast, we get free McAfee. My mom has Quest and she get a free anti-virus software also. Check it out. However, it doesn't do much for spyware and malware. Spitzboov is correct. If your subscription ran out, it isn't updating for the latest viruses that are coming out.

My kids click on junk and download music all the time (despite my telling them not to) so our computer is always getting stuff like that. Hence, my new mac that they are not going to touch. They can fix their own computer problems now, and they may learn to listen to my advice (or not). Hope you get it figured out.

Good day to all.

Jerome said...

Bill G- I think of the Saturday puzzle as turning the dogs loose and letting them run wild. On Saturday, constructors can kind of run amok and not be constrained by theme. Also the low block (black squares) and word count enable the writer to really let loose with the imagination and create lots of long and interesting words and phrases. Plus they're allowed to be more devilish with the clueing.
I find these features of a Saturday puzzle more than make up for the lack of theme.

MJ said...

@Argyle-Thanks for the links and recipe. The second link certainly has some delicious looking dishes, though, alas, no recipes.

@Bill G.-Although the LAT Saturday xword is themeless, not all Saturday puzzles are. The puzzle published by CrosSynergy(TM) Syndicate, for example, is themed.

JD said...

Good morning Argyle, CC and all,

A pretty easy one for me this am. Liked your explanation of all wet.
DCannon, loved your theme!

One of my trivia pages says that honey is the only food that doesn't spoil.

Hadn't thought about the Hopi Indians since I taught 3rd grade..long ago. Their name comes from the word 'hopitu" meaning peaceful ones. Their reservation is surrounded by the much larger Navajo reservation. Who knows how many gambling casinos have been built there by now. I always like the legends from the past so here is the Hopi creation myth.

The only other word that caught my fancy in today's puzzle was Skor, as it (and Heath bars) are my favorites. Will add a Caramel Skor Ice Cream Pie recipe later if anyone is interested.Probably should be thinking of eating bran instead. Blaaah.

Hi gang -

Simple enough puzzle, but enjoyable. My only quibble is that if you have Pooh in the clue, then the answer should be HUNNY, not HONEY.

Snowing here, and low 20's. Just like Dick said.

And I, too, like that football opener.

Not much going on today, other than snow. Scuttled a trip to T-town due to the weather and the LW having a tummy-ache. We'll lay low and hope tomorrow is better.

Annette said...

Not much to say about the puzzle, other than liking the fill UP UP “and away” by the Fifth Dimension. And I always have a hard time reading Bum as Burn too.

C.C.: You’re the 3rd person I know who’s PC has been invaded with malware, virus’, etc. over the holidays! How can people be so cruel violating other people’s property, information and identity?! The main difference between the things you asked are how they get into your system, and what they do once they get there. You may need to reboot your PC and come up in Safe Mode (by holding down the F8 key during the startup, before you see the Windows logo!) Then try running your cleaner software.

MJ: I found an Italian version of the Honey Roses called Carteddate (or King's Crowns). Try searching on that. There are a number of variations out there, some dipped in a fig sauce instead of honey sounded good too.

Dennis: You should have plenty of space to spread out at the beach and available water vehicles – a 70 degree air temp is too cold for most locals to go swimming! And it must be in honor of your presence, but the high tomorrow is predicted to be only a DF 69! ;-)

Annette said...

C.C.: Yes, if you want to use McAfee, you do have to renew it every year. But it looks like you should have access to free AntiVirus software with your Quest DSL service.

"OneCare includes Anti-virus, Anti-spyware, Online ID protection, Firewall, and file backup and restore functionality. Windows Live™ OneCare™ is included with your Qwest high-speed internet service at no additional charge. Just one software download gets you all-in-one security and performance service for your Windows® XP SP2 or Windows Vista™ PCs."

I couldn't tell you how it compares to McAfee, other than being free. If you want to look into it once you clean your PC of this virus, you can go to this site (I'm sorry, I don't remember the syntax to set up the link, and can't get to your main blog page from the office to get it): http://www.qwest.com/internethelp/security/Firewall_Download_Windows_Live_One_Care.html

Thank you guys for your input and opinions about themeless puzzles. The CrosSynergy puzzle has a theme on Saturday but not Sunday if I remember correctly. I can usually find one or two extra puzzles with a theme on Cruciverb from time to time.

If I can suss out the theme, it usually helps me solve the puzzle and makes it more fun. The really hard Friday and Saturday puzzles are certainly a worthwhile challenge for my brain but more of a slog for me than a fun activity.

Bill G. said...

I can only sympathize with the frustrations that C.C. is having with malware and/or viruses. I'm glad that nobody thinks enough of Macs to write destructive programs for them.

~ Bill

Annette said...

C.C.: Further research shows that Windows Live OneCare is being phased out, and replaced with "Microsoft Security Essentials", which is also free and is getting very good reviews -by all except McAfee and Norton, its competition.

You can read more details about it on Wikipedia.

Here's their site where you can get more info, help and download it: http://www.microsoft.com/Security_Essentials/

Good luck!

Was told by Geek Squad guys that the Trojan Win32.FakeSpypro I got can not be killed by any Anti Virus software. It's a month old virus, mainly from YouTube, Face Book & My Space. I am afraid I have to call them in to fix my computer. Very frustrating!

Hello All--An easy Monday puzzle as everyone has previously said. I enjoyed being able to sit and do the puzzle all the way through without being interrupted. However, the house is too quiet now that everyone is gone. I can't have it both ways, can I?

I did the Friday and Saturday puzzles off and on for three days, and finally finished those this morning, late. They were both very hard and I was glad to have the answers because I had to cheat on both puzzles. I always learn something, though, so that's a good thing.

One daughter and her family stayed through until this morning, so we've been busy with family for 4 days. It was wonderful to see everyone, even our grand daughter who is teaching in Mexico this year.

Four sisters, and their husbands, and grown, and almost grown children make for a loud group when they all get to talking to and over each other.

Cold and rainy here today. A good day to curl up with the crossword.

Easy but not boring Monday puzzle--here's hoping some new solvers enjoy it too and join the fun we share. I sure wouldn't haven't known "lunkheads" were DOPES without our discussion here; not I word I use, yet! I still use "doofus" which is not very popular.

I love HONEY Crisp apples. I agree with Mr JazzB re: "hunny." Really loved those Pooh books when I was a kid. I can still picture the line drawings. Oh, I never heard of cookies boiled in honey; sounds promising. NODs of approval from me.

A colleague of mine didn't known who Sasha and Malia were...I like those names.

Argyle, thanks for NOT including a link to anything Osbourne. They get more publicity than they deserve as it is!

C.C. I hope you're successful in eradicating the malware. Scary stuff.

Question - Shouldn't 19A have two blanks to indicate the two words of up, up? since I don't know the Fifth Dimension, I kept trying to think of a word that could go with "and Away" other than up, up.

CC, I have had success sometimes googling a trojan and finding a program to fix them. But you have to be careful that you don't just google more junk. Doesn't always work though. I have also just backed up my data and reformatted the whole thing. That is really the only sure thing sometimes, but it is a real pain also. I simply HATE Vista. Could not wait to get rid of it. Best of luck. I know there are ways to not use the geek squad, but you have to be somewhat savvy. I am just enough to get me in trouble, but often good enough to get me out of trouble.

I also put an add-on to my firefox browser that highlights suspect or unsafe sites. That was really useful when doing a search. You could avoid those that were not know good sites.

Bill G, I just got my mac. Should I put any anti-virus or spyware programs on at all? I am thinking I don't need to, but don't want to be stupid either.

I have had Macs all along. I got one virus about 20 years ago from a pirated copy of a game. Nothing since. I don't have any anti-virus software and haven't had for years. I don't open suspicious attachments and I use common sense. I haven't heard of any other Mac users having problems either. I would enjoy the freedom of the Mac and not worry about it unless things change in the future.
