Theme: "Make Circles"- The circled letters are all car makes. The clue only refers to the second word in each theme entry.

21A. Coleoptera insect: VOLKSWAGEN BEETLE.

31A. Much of western Queensland: SUBARU OUTBACK.

43A. Gazelle cousin: CHEVROLET IMPALA.

65A. Type of center: HONDA CIVIC.

68A. Spring sign: FORD TAURUS.

84A. Long-distance exploration program: PLYMOUTH VOYAGER.

101A. Musical work: HYUNDAI SONATA.

112A. Scotland native: TOYOTA HIGHLANDER.

Victor gave us another puzzle with a fresh twist. Without the circles and its "Make Circles" title, this would be just another "listy" puzzle.

I wonder why "make" for cars but "brand" for everything else. "What's your favorite make of peanut butter" sounds odd.

13. Reach 22, in a game: BUST. Blackjack.

Ol' Man Keith FLN at 9:57 PM
- - Wrote "Your dog, Romeo, looks like a little love - a very sweet tempered beast.
Was he?"
- - Yes he was. He was introduced at 8 weeks old to a house with 2 cats, ergo he loved cats. We would walk at night, and meet "Gray kitty." They would nuzzle, and rub together, and she would allow him to sniff her butt. His sister, Callie, a Calico cat would allow him to herd her, nipping at her heels, and then disappear behind the couch. While he was looking for her at this end, she would appear at that end as if to say "Is that all you have, big boy?"
- - When he was a pup, and wagged his tail, he wagged all over. I wanted to name him "Wiggles", but Romeo suited him. He was a lover.
- - We had a greeting ritual that could have won America's funniest videos. I had to sit quickly because he was coming at a trot. He jumped up to my knee, and pushed off, and would have gone over my shoulder if I hadn't caught him. With his hind feet on my knee, and front on my shoulder, he would literally gnaw my nose. It was the high point of my day.

FIRight. I worked it on Mensa, and don't know why the other sites bothered with circles. This theme was so obvious (and fun) that it was almost ridiculous!

When I was a Cub, the consonants in WeBeLo stood for the animals who have cubs -- Wolf, Bear, Lion.

'Twas BRILLIG of the day that Alice
Visited the MAD Queen's palace.
There a slithy tove
Remarked, "By JOVE,
If I BITE you it's without any MALICE!"

CELIA ITSAGO was in a DAZE
She hadn't slept in several days
When IT'S A GO for a nap
Then the dream would untap
Of speaking naked to a crowd from a very high dais!

There was a BEETLE, tho very PLEASANT,
Was in need of a lawyer to represent
His case in court.
So he hired a short
But well recommended PLEAS ANT!

It's a little-known fact that Mata HARI
Once considered committing hara kari.
A lack of B-1
Had her flat on her bum
With a case of acute BERI BERI!

Good morning!

Started right off reading "Coleoptera" as "Cleopatra" and almost scarabed myself. I think I would've gotten the theme even without the circles. As Owen said, obvious. I finished in well under 30, good Sunday time. Thanx, Victor and C.C.

JOVE: It's another name for Jupiter. I always wondered why science shows about Jupiter refer to the Jovian atmosphere.

ELAM: Jack Elam was a character actor known for portraying western villains.

LARRY: Bernie Sanders credited Larry David with doing a better Bernie Sanders than Bernie could.

IHOP: Doesn't really "make" the links, just cooks 'em. C.C., I think "make" is appropriate for manufactured goods only: TV's, refrigerators, cars, furniture, etc, but not peanut butter (or sausage links).

Good Morning, C.C., and friends. I caught the them near the end of my first pass, when I got the TOYOTA HIGHLANDER. Then I went back and filled in the rest of the cars.

Mata HARI was ultimately killed by firing squad for being a spy.

JABBERWOCKY is a nonsense poem by Lewis Carroll. It was in his book, Alice in Wonderland. For some reason, I had to memorize this poem in school.

ELAM is new to me, too.

It was not too difficult, with SAONE the river that took me too long; WEBELOS unknown and ELEMI not coming to mind until I had 5 perps.

The movie THE FOUNDER was a major flop for the Weinstein bothers after they left Miaramax and before their empire crumbled.

C.C., the actually was a TV series in the 1980s called MANIMAL about a crime fighting shape-shifter.

I was surprised that JACK ELAM was not an immediate fill as he was very well known both as a bad guy and in comedic roles, aided by the effect of his non-working left eye. He appears once or twice a year in LAT puzzles, the most recent being LA Times - Aug. 13, 2017, LA Times - March 26, 2017, LA Times - Oct. 17, 2016, and LA Times - June 2, 2015

Thank you, Victor and C.C.

Got the theme early, so a pretty easy Sunday solve. Nice relaxing start to this beautiful morning!

jfromvt said...

As someone else mentioned, why even bother with the circles? This one was obvious enough, made it too easy. Not a fan of circles in the grid, too gimmicky.

Good Morning:

It took quite awhile to catch the theme but, eventually, I saw the light and finished in normal Sunday time. I had too many unknowns to mention but w/os were minimal: Sear/Char, Seine/Saone, Attending/Totaling, and Net Pet/Neo Pet. My favorite C/A was One spotted at the zoo=Leopard. Nice CSO to Spitz and moi at Troy School, RPI.

Thanks, Victor, for a fun and satisfying solve and thanks, CC, for your insightful wrap-up. I enjoyed all of your visuals but those of Misha made my day. (Teddy bears are near and dear to my heart. I have 47 of them on shelves in my den in various sizes, shapes, and personas.)

Lucina, I'm glad you enjoyed the movie and family outing.

Dave, we never forget our faithful companions, do we? Romeo sounds adorable.

Seeing the picture of Meg Ryan makes me realize just how quickly the time goes. My image of her, I guess, will always be one of youth and energy and adventure, not to mention that pretty face. I recently saw current movies with Julia Roberts and Reese Witherspoon and while neither one has lost a beat, both look more like the middle-aged women that they are, rather than the young, beautiful, quirky ingenues who lit up the screen. This is not a criticism, merely an observation that, whether we like it or not, times marches on.

Have a great day.

I had SHANTY and never rechecked it because of the three down Naticks.
I thought the clue had LOUIE..as a Stone's hit. Animals n'est-ce pas? Supposedly had a hidden set of words.

I've got the audio from the VOYAGER phonograph record on my music server. The audio is very clear, but a bit bass-shy, probably to limit the needle excursions and allow more recording time per side. It's a bit jarring to have Bach, Stravinsky and Otto Klemperer side-by-side with Louis Armstrong, Blind Willie Johnson and Chuck Berry. I ordered it, because I was curious as to just what Carl Sagan's wife had put together to shoot into space as a greeting from earth.

Hi Y'all! Very interesting puzzle, Victor. Didn't get the theme title of "Make Circles" until I came to the blog. However, I did get the car makes/models which opened up the long fills. Thanks for another great expo, C.C.

Last to fill was the NW bloc JOVE/JIBED & ICON/OCULI crosses plus ENL. OCULI was an unknown. Guess I'll have to LIU. Other unknowns: MPEG, KROC, CELIA, ELAM, ELEMI, NEOPET, SAONE River (ESP), WANER.

Coming to = TOTALING totally mystified me for awhile. Filled it but didn't get it.

C.C.: I wear an APRON to eat at home. We full-figured gals have problems with food drips on our "shelves".

The 30s were a dogfight between Pirates, Cards, Giants and Cubs (who won every third year(29,32,35,38).
Then there was Brooklyn with Casey of whom Ralph Terry remarked "Are they still in the League?". Only to get knocked out of the pennant race by 'Them Bums' on the last weekend ('37?)

Very colorful era as opposed to Yankee dominance in the AL. The Pirates contended often with"Pie" Traynor and the Waners but rarely won out .

Enjoyed the theme! But UGH to the fill!

ELEMI/MAD/DILLY was UGH to me even though I did WAG it correctly. Bigger UGH? KROC/ARA/ACE/KEIRA/MANIMAL. I was proud to get MANIMAL. And I thought I was so clever to figure out THE FOUNDER as LRON as in L RON Hubbard. That worked since ONE seemed as good as ACE and ARO seemed as good as ARA and LEIRA seemed as good as KEIRA. An utterly UGH Natick stew. Did I say UGH?

CC: Thanks for the MATA HARI photo! A beauty, indeed! As for the Korean noodles, I think I did have them when I was in Korea a few years back for work. I liked most of the Korean food a lot. But I am not fond of eggs.

Here I was at The Treasures of King TUT in London in 1972.

I was 13 years old. I have seen other TUT exhibits since then, but apparently photos were not allowed. A lot of the best TUT stuff no longer travels anymore.

Here are my photos of ANGELA DAVIS speaking here in 1992.

Her talk was a critique of "Multiculturalism" and the idea of a "salad" of different cultures. "Who eats that salad?" she asked. I think she likes to keep everyone on their toes with the questions she asks. I had a good friend of Japanese ancestry who was named for ANGELA DAVIS.

Here is my photo of BILL NYE receiving an Environmental Hero Award here at Earth Day.

I have some WESTERN QUEENSLAND photos, too...

Good afternoon, folks. Thank you, Victor Barocas, for a fine puzzle. Thank you, C.C., for a fine review.

This puzzle was not too bad once I figured out all the cars all over the puzzle. That helped a lot.

Some tough ones: MANIMAL, MISHA, ANGELA, BRILLIG, NEOPET, WANER, JOVE, KEIRA, TWERK, and LARRY. Thank you, perps.

Some clever entries: GUIDE DOG, NO JOY

Took me about an hour and a half. Pretty good for me.

See you tomorrow.

Bill Nye may be a man of science, but if he's a scientist I'm a gynecologist. He's an engineer who spent more time thinking about his avocation than his vocation. Me too. And I also liked BUST as fill for "reach 22...".

PLEASANT is also a beautiful lake that is home to the Arizona Yacht Club. I sailed in many races there while I lived in Phoenix. Roosevelt Lake is much larger but not nearly as convenient.

Safe and sound back home after a wonderful camping trip to Asheville. Nice enough town, but too many cars and pedestrians for my liking. I liked Black Mountain and Hendersonville better. Maybe I'll be less grumpy after a good night's sleep.

Hello everyone.

Did it on-line at the Mensa site so I had to soldier on without the circles. No matter; once the car make inclusion became obvious, the solve went easily. Nice CSO as CC and IM have mentioned.
Angel - ENGEL - - The 'ENGEL 'G' IS A HARD 'G'. Tannbaum made the German form clear because I grew up with Tannenbaum. When I was just a wee lad, my Mom would occasionally allude to one of us kids as "E'n lüttje Engel" a little angel. (I think we both knew what a snow job that was.)

Interesting puzzle. I liked it. SUBARU OUTBACK gave me the makes of cars gimmick, which I enjoyed. I think the circles were needed to jibe with the "Make Circles" title (each group of circles being the make of car.)

Favorite clue was "One spotted at the zoo".

Brillig made me think of Ol'Man Keith.

Best wishes to you all.

WikWak said...

Good morning! (Well—it’s MY morning.) :P

Caught the gimmick with the first one (VWBEETLE), which made the rest a shoo-in. Great puzzle, Victor; a good start to the day. Thanks to C.C. for her explanatory writeup.

FIR in typical Sunday time; just shy of half an hour.

Owen, in my neck of the woods Webelos stood for the three ranks of Cubbing plus an S for Scout, which would be the next "rank" attained. Wolf, Bear, Lion, Scout. I don’t think any of the folks there ever said anything to us about all the animals having cubs. How could we not have seen that?!

ELEMI was a total unknown to me; TGFP! MISHA was also not known to me (don’t think I watched any of the Russian olympics).

BERI-BERI, along with Scurvy and probably some other ailments I’ve forgotten, was a huge problem for sailors until it was discovered that they were all due to diets lacking some essential vitamins, etc. When the British navy realized this, they started requiring their ships to stock large quantities of citrus fruits and to make sure the sailors ate them. That’s when the name "limey" started to be used for Englishmen.

I had most of this finished before going to Church but the NW corner gave me fits! First, I had to get rid of SIDED when JOVE appeared, then away with ROUT before DRUBS. I've never heard of WEBELOS which sounded strange to me, but had to accept it. One bad cell at ROLEO because I can never remember if it's ANA or ARA. ANA won.

By JOVE, I got it! Inside the circles are the make of cars! Ooh, that V-8 can hurt.

When Bend It Like Beckham first came out, we loved it and became acquainted with KEIRA Knightly. We are not soccer fans, but loved the movie.

I wasn't aware that LIFE was a Quaker cereal. And in spite of my self I've learned a few sports' figures names so UNITAS popped out as soon as I had the U.

The FORD TAURUS I owned at the time likely saved my life when a drugged driver ran a red light, hit my car and two others with an impact that pushed my car several feet down the road. When my late DH saw the car he thought I might be dead.

Thank you, Victor Barocas and C.C. Today's entertainment was nice ride.

I hope you are all enjoying a better than PLEASANT day!

Sunday Lurk Say...

Nice puzzle and expo Victor and C.C., respectively. Even though I don't play Sundays, I still get to learn (e.g. BERI BERI is new to me).

{A-, B, B+, B}

WC - the clue for LOUIS references Rolling Stone magazine; not the Stones. D-O set you straight on the band.

Spitz - interesting on Tannbaum /fir tree; the word looked like Andrew Tanenbaum's (wrote TCP/IP Illustrated + bunch of other stuff on Computer Networks - my college texts) name. So, dumb question here, Is there any relationship between the two words?

I was a WEBELO (wobbles but we don't fall down! [play on Weebles]) after a Cub. I went on to earn everything but Eagle in Scouts (no service project before I turned 18 :-( what Hatoolah's QOD says :-))

Lucina - is it that you didn't know it was made by the Quaker Co. or that it was a cereal? Mikey likes it!. Quaker also owns Tropicana, Aunt Jemima (both breakfast-y - makes sense), and used to hold Gatorade (why?) from '88 to '00 before selling it to PepsiCo.

Things are too quiet around here... Eldest left today on her way back to OU (stopping at her Cousin's in Sulfur Springs for the night). She's returning to campus two weeks early to train for her new RA job which provides free room & board and saves me $$!
but I miss her already.

Have a great Sunday All!

Cheers, -T

I believe Webelo without the S is not used. From Wikipedia (forgive me): "Webelos is an acronym meaning "We'll Be Loyal Scouts". You could check the source cited by Wiki!
Both my sons were in Scouts at different times. David's leaders in Cubs and, more so, in Scouts, were not that adept and David dropped out. Alan's special needs Scouts were wonderful. The boys participated with their parents and siblings, if desired. (David was already in college.) Alan and I had a grand time. We even went camping and rowing by boat in the Pinelands of NJ, one of my favorite memories. When we traveled downstream Alan controlled the boat alone. He was thrilled.
My ADHD grandson loved Scouting. In the beginning he had negligent den leadership in Cub Scouts. I was appalled by some of the sessions I attended with him, thereafter he transferred to a great group. My DIL joined the leadership. Kenny had a wonderful experience and was a great camper. He learned so many leadership skills and became an Eagle Scout, in spite of his handicap. His mother and the Scout leaders helped him so much.

ARA and ELEMI are terms I learned from crosswords.
I had -IERA for Keira, an ABC run would have confirmed K, drat! The most sensible name. I goofed. Then KROC for the Founder of MacDonald's would have been brought to mind. I have either seen this movie or something similar.

YR. I intended the UGH not because of being too arcane, but just not very interesting. I've enjoyed puzzles by CC, JeffWech and others that have kicked my butt, but that I found interesting. Just not the case with today's offering. But I'm sure others really liked it. As we see all the time, some Cornerites find puzzles easy that I can't get started on, and vice versa. I think it's just the yin and yang of our collective experiences and capabilities.

YR and Lucina, it is so hard to let go of someone we've loved for so long. My heart is with you. I have more to say regarding a particular personal experience, but not yet. Maybe in a year or two I'll be ready.

Anon -T @ 1645 - I'm assuming you are asking about the two Tannenbaum usages. They basically are the same. Tannenbaum as a surname sounds Jewish to me. When the Jews settled in German speaking areas, probably in the Middle Ages? many took surnames of German words. Tannenbaum, Nussbaum, Appelbaum, Silver, Bernstein, Stern, Rothschild, etc. Those in eastern Europe did the same with slavic words; many names ending in sky, or wicz, for instance.
If I've mischaracterized this maybe Hahtoolah, or Lemonade can chime in.
Hope this answers your question.

I got the theme; DH helped with some of the brands.
WEES about problem areas.
For those of us who have seen Niagara Falls on a regular basis since childhood, seeing the AWE on the face and voice of someone who has never seen it before is an illuminating experience. Many times we do not fully appreciate the beauty at our doorstep.

WC, I smiled when I saw gloaming as I had just read your early morning post on yesterday's blog.
AnonT, I remember when my eldest went off for her first entire summer away from home working at a camp. Empty nest syndrome hit with a vengeance. After that, she and her brothers all went off to university, work, marriages etc. Hardest job of being a parent is letting them go (giving them wings to fly) but still being there when they need a spot to roost! (Or when they need a spot to send the grandchildren LOL, but that is fun!)
Misty, hope you get some relief for your eyes.

Got a second for a story? (this really happened!)
The Spin Doctors, before Pocket Full of Kryptonite dropped, visited the RTVF (Radio, TV, Film) dept. at NLU (North LA U. in Monroe, LA) where DW was a budding Journalism student.
They hung around the studio hoping for an interview or some such (DW called them a bunch of stinky guys) but everyone @ the department was focused on Pauly Shore coming to campus so no one took interest in 'em.

DW got the interview w/ Pauly Shore (he was a BUTT) but missed the biggest thing that was about to hit that summer. I'm not sure if that was why (or if it really was her Shakespeare class) but, after that, she switched majors (w/ 1 year to go!) to English Lit.

C, Eh! We give them wings to fly and are proud and sad at the same time. I'm very lucky; both are good & kind kids.

Cheers, -T
