Thursday, November 28th 2019 Joseph Ashear

Theme: Black Thursday - discounts come early this year to the crossword:

20A. 2015 Marvel feature, after budget cuts: FANTASTIC THREE. I'm sure STAN Lee would have fought to preserve the four, in spite of the cuts.

29A. 1995 romantic comedy, after budget cuts: EIGHT MONTHS

39A. 2018 heist thriller, after budget cuts: OCEAN'S SEVEN. I think I'd have looked for an alternative to this theme entry, if possible. There are already four "genuine" numbered titles in the "Ocean's" film series (in release order, Eleven, Twelve, Thirteen and Eight) so that this one doesn't seem at all incongruous or unlikely.

50A. 1957 courtroom drama, after budget cuts: ELEVEN ANGRY MEN

Well, hot on the heels of Joseph's debut that had a lot of us scratching our heads a couple of weeks ago, here's a second Thursday offering. This one was a nice Thanksgiving-morning solve, nothing too challenging and giving us all plenty of time to pay attention to the turkey in the oven!

On to the fill:

Across:

1. Headache feature: THROB

6. Report of a blowup?: BANG

10. More, in Madrid: MAS

13. Peter of Herman's Hermits: NOONE. Unlike the head-throb at 1A, Mr. Noone was something of a heart-throb. He could also clap like a champ.

14. Winds in a pit: OBOES

16. In the past: AGO

17. Away from the coast: TO SEA

18. "Counting Sheep" company: SERTA

19. Celestial sphere: ORB

23. Wee bits: IOTAS

24. Less stuffy: AIRIER

25. Historical capital of Bohemia: PRAGUE. Not Praha?

28. Federal IDs: S.S.N.'S

32. "The Shawshank Redemption" actor Robbins: TIM

35. Coagulate: CLOT

36. Arthur with Emmys: BEA

37. The Velvet Underground singer: NICO. A big grumble here, Nico was not a member of the band; she sang vocals on three tracks (at the behest of producer Andy Warhol) on the album named, tellingly, "The Velvet Underground and Nico". Lou Reed was the Velvet Underground's vocalist and 'twill ever be so.

38. Beer barrel: KEG

43. Rap fan: B-BOY. A breakdancer, or a "break boy". Apparently b-boys didn't like to be called breakdancers.

44. On the job: AT WORK

45. Lucille Ball's son: DESI JR. I'm not sure I knew there was a Desi Jr. but it didn't take long to figure out.

48. Beverage aisle array: SODAS. Not in my beverage aisle, unless you're talking about soda water or tonic.

54. Went for the worm: BIT

55. Avocado or plum: COLOR. 1970's bathroom fixtures. It was quite a selling point to be able to list a house with an "avocado suite" in the bathroom.

56. Bit of climbing gear: PITON

58. Submachine gun in action films: UZI

59. Léopard relative: TIGRÉ

60. Radii neighbors: ULNAE

61. Shade at the beach: TAN

62. They're worked with pull-ups and pull-downs: LATS

63. Lynx and Mercury: TEAMS. Minnesota and Phoenix, respectively, of the Women's NBA.

Down:

1. Wile E. Coyote supply: TNT.

2. Reindeer foot: HOOF

3. Parks of Alabama: ROSA

4. __ only: special performance alert: ONE NIGHT. Today's theme would have this as "No nights only".

5. Triumph over: BEAT OUT

6. __ nova: BOSSA. Tempted by SUPER, waited.

7. Helps in a heist: ABETS

8. Sushi seaweed: NORI. I'm eating some right now, great to snack on, you don't need to wrap anything in it, although my Auntie Miho's Spam Musubi rocks. I'll be eating some at Christmas.

9. Use an ATM: GET CASH. When I first went to Hong Kong, I stopped off to get cash at the HKSB ATM near my hotel in Kowloon and topped short - the keypad is upside down. It never really crossed my mind that I remembered my PIN from the pattern on the keys, not the numbers. I had to turn my head 180 degrees to get it right. You don't want to get your ATM card swallowed by a machine at midnight, wherever you are.

10. One of New Zealand's official languages: MAORI

11. Match: AGREE

12. Not lit: SOBER

15. Lustrous fabrics: SATINS

21. "Up and __!": AT 'EM. Not AWAY then! I got that wrong at first.

22. Appt. book blocks: HRS.

25. Two dry gallons: PECK. Ask Peter Piper. That's a lot of peppers to pick.

26. Irk: RILE

27. All aflutter: AGOG

28. Spider-Man co-creator Lee: STAN. With Artist-Writer Steve Ditko. Stan passed just a year ago, he had a remarkable career and legacy in the comic book world. If you come across the original comic book in great condition, you're looking at around $18,000.

30. Follow: OBEY

31. Cultural funding org.: N.E.A.

32. Pioneering DVR: TIVO

33. Pastry bag user: ICER. No, sorry. Why should a member of the Institute of Clinical and Economic Review need a pastry bag? Time to retire this fill.

34. Coltrane collaborator: MONK. John's jazz pianist chum Thelonious.

37. Phrase in cosmetic dentistry marketing: NEW SMILE

39. Take exception: OBJECT

40. Mazola product: CORN OIL

41. __ City: Baghdad suburb: SADR

42. Remain in place: STAY PUT

43. End of the rainbow mnemonic: BIV. Another fill for the dustbin. Really? Take three random letters and call them a word. Terrible. Take any three of ROYGBIV to suit your needs and off you go.

45. Run for the first time: DEBUT

46. Dushku of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer": ELIZA. Thank you, crosses. Fortunately I didn't need to even look at this one, it was already filled in for me.

47. Take hold gradually: SET IN

48. Inelegant laugh: SNORT

49. Shrek and Fiona: OGRES

51. Fish tank growth: ALGA

52. One of Italy's trio of active volcanoes: ETNA

53. Linguist Chomsky: NOAM

57. Mario Bros. console: N.E.S. All Together Now "Nintendo Entertainment System".

Well, swiftly to the conclusion and a Happy Thanksgiving to all. Here's the grid, and I'll see you at the leftovers.

Steve

FIWrong. MiNK + NICi.

When music has a THROBBING beat,
When drums go BANG, and OBOES bleat,
When your foot
Just can't STAY PUT,
That's when there's dancing in the street!

When they dance the BOSSA NOVA
They don't hold back, not ONE IOTA!
Hips that swivel
May tempt the Divil,
But dance they must until it's ov'a!

FIR in 10 minutes; following on the heels of yesterday’s puzzle, this seemed more of a Wednesday one. Very enjoyable though! Thanks to Joseph and Steve. Not too many nits to pick, but it took me until the end to resolve the NORI / SERTA crossing. (So-called) edible weeds aren’t really my thing. ;-)

Steve, I heartily agree: Lou Reed it was! I wanted Praha first, too, but not enough letters.

Never heard the phrase B-Boy, but the perps were solid. I caught the theme right away and that helped a lot.

Well, it’s nearly bedtime so I’ll wish you all happy eating later on and toddle off. (I can only toddle because the 60 mph winds of this afternoon are down to 12 mph now, otherwise I would be sailing off.)

Good morning!

Got the "subtract one" theme right away. Too bad it doesn't work with pounds. No Wite-Out was needed this morning, but I did stare at NEWS MILE for a bit. Thanx, Joseph, and for pulling holiday duty, Steve.

GET CASH: The ATM is just about my only contact with my online bank. Can't make an ATM deposit, though -- the only drawback I've found.

NOAM: Dw has a great nephew named Noam. (I call him Chomsky.) He's due to get a new brother in a few weeks.

SSNS: I finished my study prep a couple of weeks ago. Yesterday I completed the IRS certification exams for next year's tax season. This may be my last year. We'll no longer be allowed to log into the tax software from home. When the IRS "bounces" a return, we'll have to return to the tax site to research/correct the problem. Bummer. One of my sites is 17 miles away.

I'd like to take a moment to wish all of our little community a memorable Thanksgiving, also to those of you who lurk, but don't chime in. No turkey chez d-o. Dw is having vegetarian lasagna, and I'll warm up some leftover meatloaf. Not fancy, but also not Pepto-inducing.

Happy Thanksgiving, Steve and friends. This was a quick and fun Thursday puzzle.

I tried Super Nova before settling on the BOSSA Nova.

We saw Mt. ETNA on our recent trip to Sicily.

Need to prepare some dishes for the Thanksgiving meal later today. We will have a houseful of friends for some good company.

Wishing all a safe and satisfied Thanksgiving!

Enjoyed the puzzle. Liked the theme .

Did not know BBOY and BIV, would still be in the dark on that if not for BobB’s and Steves’s explanation. Thanks

Enjoyed OwenKl’s licks as usual.

I crawled out of retirement again this week to do a little carpentry finishing . Install doors casings and window trim. I found my knees telling me that I was a septuagenarian no doubt. Dancing for three hours is way easier. Tomorrow night DW and I are going to an Old Time Dance . No work tomorrow . Saving myself for three hours of hugging to the music:-). .

FIW. Batted .500 on the Naticks _BOY x _IV and NIC_ x M_NK. Sussed out the first: IV must be indigo and violet, so what could the third-highest frequency of visible light? Alphabet run was short when I got to B - BLUE! Love Velvet Underground, but don't know the names of any of that talented group. No way of salvaging the second (hi OKL). Erased fruit for TEAMS.

"Went for the worm" reminded me of my old tequila-drinking days.

Had to wait for "avocados or plums" because there wasn't enough room for "colour", eh?

Long day yesterday. Left home at 6:45 for DWs Mohs surgery for a basal cell cancer on her nose. Was disappointed when we came in and no one yelled "welcome to Mohs". Then went across town for plastic surgery. That was scheduled for noon, but didn't get started until 2:00. Stopped by the drug store for some good pain killers, then got home just before 5.

I'm the chef for the day. I got a prepackaged dinner from the grocery store. Pre-cooked turkey and dressing, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, gravy and cranberry sauce. I was surprised with the instructions on the "fully cooked" turkey: Use meat thermometer to make sure the turkey reaches a safe temperature.

Happy Thanksgiving to all Cornerites. Thanks to Joseph and Steve for the fun.

Happy Thanksgiving !

DW spent the day yesterday baking cookies and pies, and I stayed out of her way. Except for a few unnecessary trips that took me past the kitchen so I could grab some cookies cooling on the wire rack. By the time supper came, I'd sort of damped my appetite, but managed to have second helpings while telling her how good it was. And it was.

As WikWak noted, the winds calmed down overnight. We had sustained high winds all day yesterday. Had to go pick up the garbage bin and recycle bin two times before the trucks finally rolled through to collect the contents. The big garbage bin was heavy. It was half filled with 2x4's and other garbage from cleaning up the shed last week. You know the winds are strong when they can topple a garbage bin with probably 40 or 50 pounds of weight.

I'm not in to watching parades, and I'd usually have to find something to do while waiting on the traditional feast. Not today. Going to get out there and start cleaning the yard of all the leaves and branches that blew in from Iowa. Then have to reconnect all the gutter extensions...

Oh, and the puzzle was fine. Got the gist of it with the first theme answer and pretty much sailed through it with little hesitation. I remembered B-BOY from the last time we had it, but it took a moment to recall it. TIGer went in before the perps forced TIGRE.

Thank you, Joseph and Steve, and I hope everyone has a Happy Thanksgiving.

Terrific Thursday. Thanks for the fun, Joseph and Steve.
Officially a DNF today because of the Natick (B) of BBOY and BIV. (I wondered if the "rainbow mnemonic" was LGBTIQ but my V was solid.) The O in MONK and NICO was a correct WAG.

Hand up for thinking of Praha after my learning moment last week. Did anyone else think of Pas to go with MAS?
Loved the fresh cluing for OBOES.
I waited for perps to decide between SODAS and Colas. (I'm with Steven on there being no SODAS in my beverage aisle!)
Jinx - nice to know that some other Cornerites are wanting to spell COLOR correctly (with the U!) LOL. I will have you all turned into Canadians yet. (Then you will enter SINS instead of SSNS.)

Hahtoolah - great QOD for Thanksgiving.
Wishing you all a great day however you are celebrating.
I am going to make the Christmas pudding (5 hours of steaming)

Good Morning:

This was the second Thursday in a row that had a very obvious theme and, therefore, provided a quick and easy solve. (I prefer more challenging puzzles, especially later in the week.) However, easy though it was, the B Boy/BIV crossing gave me a DNF. I never heard of B Boy and I never learned that mnenomic, so I was stymied, but good. Other troublesome but solvable spots were: Eliza, Monk, and Nico, but no W/Os. I liked the NEA/NES duo and the Bang from the TNT!

Thanks, Joseph, for a fun and enjoyable solve and thanks, Steve, for your sure and steady guidance, especially on a holiday.

WicWac and Oas, stop by more often and keep us up to date.

Bill G, sorry that Barbara is under the weather and that you're missing out on the turkey and all the trimmings. 🍗

CED, glad to hear your MIL is up and about. I hope your new car survives the trip to the city!

Dave4, delighted to hear that your absence wasn't health related. Good for you and Carol to be so involved.

Hondo, I hope you're back to your old self soon. Nice of you to drop by.

Melissa, I chuckled when I read your post because I almost asked about some current pictures yesterday, but decided that I didn't want to seem like a pest! (Lemony, any recent pix of Charlotte, Harper, and Owen would also be welcome.)

Montana, nice to hear from you. Sorry you're buried in the white stuff so early!

Java Mama, nice to hear from you, as well. Don't be a stranger.

Happy Thanksgiving to all. I hope the day is filled with family, friends and food and peace and tranquility. 🦃

Good morning everyone and Happy Thanksgiving.

Nice solve as Steve stated. Got the theme easily once it was clear where we were headed. ELEVEN (12) ANGRY MEN has always been a favorite of mine. Totally WAGged NICO. Only unknown was B in B-BOY.
PRAGUE - If Praha was wanted, 'Bohemia' should have been clued as "Čechy". IMO

Enjoy your day.

Good morning, folks. Thank you, Joseph Ashear, for a fine puzzle. Thank you, Steve, for a fine review.

A little sticky, but it is Thursday. I thought we might see a Thanks giving theme today. No cigar. But, that's OK.

BIV was one of my gimme answers. I grew up knowing ROYGBIV. Piece of cake.

TIGRE threw me off. I had TIGER first.

Theme was fine. Caught it after OCEANS SEVEN.

ROSA helped with the NW corner.

MAORI was easy. We get that word now and then from a New Zealand clue.

NICO was unknown. Was thinking of the Velvet Fog Mel Torme. Oh well.

Lots to do today. The wife is cooking. Our daughter, her boy friend, their friends and their friends' child, are coming over tonight for Thanksgiving dinner. I am not cooking, but doing everything else.

Last night we had a Pie Fellowship at our church after the Service. Guess who was in charge. My daughter helped and it worked out fine. Tons of pie.

See you tomorrow. Go Bears!

Almost a perfect no errors puzzle with a fun theme but my 37 across 34 down WAG was a bust so DNF.

So the song my Mom used to sing to me should go "I love you a bushel and two dry gallons"

The old "serta" versus "sealy debacle.

Had the pleasure of 3 days in Prague in July at the end of a Danube River cruise that started in Budapest. Anyone thinking of taking this cruise beware. The Danube water levels get lower each year. River boats can't sail. We had some close calls till we got far enough upstream.

Really enjoyed this fun, breezy puzzle.

Agree completely, though, that NICO should have been clued better. There's a reason why the album is called, "The Velvet Underground AND Nico." As I was putting in the answer, I was thinking, "I know this is what they want, but it's not really right."

WO: started writing ELVEN after OCEAN so there's extra ink in block 42 (which is not bad for a Thursday).
ESPs: ELIZA, MAORI, SADR, BBOY, TIGRE
Fav: Learning what a PECK is. Now, how many dry gallons in a bushel?*

I haven’t posted in a while, but I had to comment.

BIV...I read somewhere recently that the INDIGO was never and isn’t a distinct color, more like ROY G BV now.

At any rate, it would have been helpful if the clue had actually been “end of the rainbow mnemonic”.

A tough natick with the BBOY cross.

Have a great Thanksgiving Day.

Thought I'd stop by to wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving (apologies to Native Americans).

I learnt ROYGBIV at High School (in England), and 50 years have not erased it from my frontal RAM. Indeed, it was the V that gave me the theme as I saw ANGRY MEN and that ELEVEN would fit nicely in front.

The long theme entries made this into a very "modular" puzzle with distinct blocks. Fortunately at least one clue in each block was a gimme and I bootstrapped from there, with no serious Naticks.

FYI, the "novel" OBOE clue was used almost verbatim in the NYTXW puzzle a few days ago.

OWEN, I amazed that you are still writing poetry after all these years. And I see distinct signs of improvement....

Best wishes to you all

Lucy Loo's Mom,

Not sure what you are trying to link,
but if it is a pic from your computer it will not work.
All links have to be freely available on the Internet...

One way around this is to use internet storage sights,
Facebook is one,
Shutterfly for photos is another,
there are many.
The catch is you must use the largest, closest, & deepest into the guts of the internet
picture for it to work.

To explain, if you use Facebook,
just linking the pic will bring the person trying to see it
to your Facebook account, where they will be blocked for not
having your password.
However...
If you can click on a larger (or largest) version of the pic you want to link,
it will bypass all the Facebook Gobbletygook (Thanksgiving term...)
and the person will just see a picture file and not any part of your
Facebook account.

This will work,
If there have not been budget cuts...

Congratulations are not really appropriate on my new milestone to senescence. My first wife took our 2 small children across country with her when we split, so I've only seen them 3 times since the oldest was a toddler, only met my grandchildren once, and likely will never see my great-grandson except in Internet photos.

Nice Cuppa, how grand to see you back! We've wondered what happened to you, and your name occasionally comes up! Do pop in once in a while! And thanks for the compliment on my poetry. I think I'm getting a bit stale, but occasional flashes of brilliance still break thru, despite my efforts. Erato and Thalia have been at this for like 25 centuries, so it takes some time to really burn out!

I do hope you've also seen my longer-form poetry over at Jumble Hints. It's faring much better than the cryptic clues bog we tried to start a few years back!

Speaking of cryptic clues, they're coming back to the New Yorker next month! That article includes some interactive practice!
