Theme: PRICE CUTS (51. Markdowns, and what 17-, 23- and 46-Across all exhibit) - PRICE is cut in three different ways.

17. Special access for celebrities: PRIVATE ENTRANCE.

23. Mass communication?: PRAYER SERVICE.

46. Popular Chinese takeout dish: PORK FRIED RICE.

Boomer here.

I've been messing around with some of my older baseball cards on eBay but maybe I am asking a little too much.  I suppose I might look at a PR ICE CUT.  Interesting, if the offer expires after 7 days, eBay automatically relists it and cuts the price for me.  I don't think grocery stores do this every week.

Across:

1. To-do list entry: TASK.  C.C. does not make a list for me.  She just has To ASK.

5. Largely seasonal Golden Arches sandwich: MCRIB.  Sounds pretty good. I have not been to McDonald's in years. My first job after caddying was working at a McDonald's competitor called Jay's.  Pretty much the same prices except hamburgers were 10 cents on Tuesday.

10. Mimicked: APED.

14. Not doing much: IDLE.  Our Santa Fe seems to totally stop running while stopped for a red light.  I suppose that saves gas but it seems weird.

15. "The Vampire Diaries" protagonist: ELENA.

16. Sleeveless top, briefly: CAMI.

20. Slender fish: EELS.  Are these really fish ??

21. Boxer Laila: ALI.

22. Garfield's dog frenemy: ODIE.

26. Fire up, as a motor: REV.  I suppose I could do this to keep the Santa Fe running.

27. Thumbs-up vote: YEA.

28. Superman foe Luthor: LEX.  Cadillac Foe LEXus.

31. Fill drink orders: TEND BAR.  For me it was a VO Manhattan on the rocks with cherry juice,  Now it's a Diet Pepsi.

35. Navigational aid letters: GPS

38. Winter glider: SLED.  Those were the days in Minnesota.  Every kid on my block had a SLED.

40. Greet at the door: SEE IN.

41. Well-organized: NEAT.  Still working on the baseball cards.  I have them pretty well organized, but there are always details.

42. Presidential biographer __ Kearns Goodwin: DORIS.

44. Ctrl-__-Del: ALT.  I am not too good at computer keys.

45. Heats, as water for pasta: BOILS.  I am pretty good at boiling Rotini.

49. Praise highly: EXTOL.

50. Freeway vehicles: AUTOS.

55. Modern hotel amenity: WIFI.  I am pretty sure that the Orleans in Las Vegas has this.  I don't know how to use it and I am too old to learn.  Also too busy at the Craps machine.

58. Word from the Yiddish for "expert": MAVEN.

59. Stereotypical techie: NERD.  Booger got his revenge (1984)

63. Fencing sword: EPEE.

64. Like milk on the floor: SPILT.  Don't cry over it.

65. Nabisco cookie: OREO.  I used to like these but diabetes limits me to maybe once a month.

66. "Easy __ it": DOES.

67. Screams: YELLS.  Plenty of that going on at Twins and Vikings games.  It does not do any good though.

68. Negotiator's asset: TACT.  Maybe people should YELL TACTfully.

Down:

1. Helpful hint: TIP.  A little extra for the waitress if you don't mind.

2. Madison Ave. figure: AD REP.

3. More cunning: SLIER.

4. Body armor fiber: KEVLAR.  I never had one of these, thankfully.

5. Got together with: MET.  Years ago the Twins played at Metropolitan Stadium, and of course it was called the MET.  Does Chicago call their ballpark the WRIG ??  This reminds me: Years ago, back when the hair on a ballplayers head all fit under their cap and they shaved every morning, I visited Chicago to attend a baseball card show and was able to find all six of the 1955 Topps double headers to complete my set, I took time out to visit the "WRIG".  I paid about $10.00 to park on someones front lawn and went to the ball game.  All I remember is all of the seats had ABC (Already been chewed) gum on the bottom underneath.  I think they have replaced all the seats but I am not sure if they still sell gum at the concession stand.

6. Easily understood: CLEAR.

7. Film spools: REELS.  Or something to hold your fishing line in the boat.

8. Concave navel: INNIE.

9. Softball club: BAT.  Softball usually allows aluminum BATs, but baseball is always wood.  Louisville Sluggers Ash are the best.

10. Northeasternmost U.S. national park: ACADIA.

11. Terrified reaction: PANIC.

12. Game show host, e.g.: EMCEE.  I watch the game show channel a lot and I dislike all of the EMCEEs.  They continue to ham it up.

13. Fizzle out: DIE.

18. To date: AS YET.

19. Mars explorer: ROVER.  Red Rover, Red Rover, send Venus right over.

24. Pre-holiday nights: EVES.  Christmas and New Years have EVES.  No sure about any other.

25. "Late Night" actress Amy: RYAN.

28. Hallucinogenic drug: LSD.  (1965)  LBJ took the IRT Crossed the USA, what did he see ?? The youth of America on LSD.

29. Skip the big wedding, maybe: ELOPE.

30. It's a copy and a company: XEROX.  What would an office do without it?

32. At hand: NEAR.

33. Shop with a slicer: DELI.

34. Quick meal: BITE.  I grab a BITE most evenings.  Sleep better.

35. Company with a spokeslizard: GEICO.  One of many Insurance companies that have STUPID Commercials.

36. Goes white from fright: PALES.

37. Ave. crossers: STS.  We live on a ST.

39. Desserts topped with gummy worms: DIRT PIES.  I am sure that I am not allowed to eat a piece of this.

41. "Wrong-o!": NO IT'S NOT.  YES IT IS !!!!

43. Chocolate-and-toffee bar: SKOR.  I can't eat this either.  Crosswords sure have a lot of food.

45. Champagne variety: BRUT.  Also a men's cologne.  I don't use it, too expensive.

47. Weak, as an excuse: FLIMSY.

48. Discourages: DAUNTS.

52. Magician's garb: CAPE.

53. Bad to the bone: EVIL.  As you read this, I am probably bowling. I hope I am not this bad!

54. Solar panel component: CELL.  Many of these near our home.  I believe they are providing electricity to our city hall and family center.

55. Tied the knot: WED.  C.C. and I got married with no strings attached.

56. Debut on the NYSE: IPO.

57. Consultant's payment: FEE.  Golf course and bowling center payment.

60. Named time span: ERA.  I think some Twins pitchers have double digits before the decimal point.

61. Remote button: REC.

62. Speck in a URL: DOT.  Or Department of Transportation.

Thanx, C.C., for a terrific Monday level (MY level!) CW. FIR in 12. Interesting grid divides the CW pretty much in half, with a bowl on top united with the rest of the cells only by 46A. W/O ADMAN:ADREP, EXALT:EXTOL. DNK ELENA, MAVEN. Also managed to make a mess by writing GEICO in 36D cells instead of 35D cells, where it belonged. Who recalls what GEICO is an acronym for? Hand up! Government Employees Insurance Company. It started out limiting its base to government employees of one sort or another. I had it many, many years ago as a teacher. Great write-up, Boomer, thanx. What you pointed out is so true: can’t eat this, can’t eat that, can’t drink this, can’t drink that. Alcoholic beverages have pretty much yielded to PowerAde Zero, Coca-Cola Zero, Crystal Lite and such. Although, my British neighbor has introduced me to Boddington’s Ale, which has one of those little gadgets in it that give it a head like Guinness, and I do indulge myself in a Boddington’s or a Guinness from time to time. Stay safe, everyone.

Good morning!

Zipped right through this one, successfully missing the reveal and theme. It's a special talent. Thanx for the wake-up, C.C., and for the expo, Boomer. Today's an All-In-The-Family day.

EVE: Boomer, there's also Halloween -- All Hallow's Eve.

CELL: They've been showing up on roofs in our little town recently. Don't think they'd work for us, unless we took out a whole bunch of trees. Our roof is in shade most of the day -- good for helping keep the house cool, not good for generating electricity.

Hope our NOLA contingent came through IDA with nothing worse than loss of power. Port Fourchon and Grand Isle took the direct hit. I've been to both, hitching chopper rides to oil rigs in the "Guff." They may not be the end of the world, but you can see it from there.

FIR, but erased "so far" for AS YET. DNK ELENA, DORIS, RYAN, PORK FRIED RICE or DIRT PIES.

I bought a lot of Kevlar over he years, but my Kevlar was in sails - light weight, strong, but expensive.

You can have my share of DIRT PIES. But I can't resist pecan PIES. Especially when my slice is oven-warm with a scoop of homemade vanilla ice cream on top.

The PGA Championship golf tournament is this weekend. Only the 30 top performers over the last year are eligible. Last place pays $395,000, about the same as the US president's yearly salary. First place pays $15 million.

Thanks to Ms. CC for the fun, mostly easy puzzle. And thanks to Mr. CC for the Monday dose of humor.

I know it is somewhat usual for the Southeast part of our great country but I wish safety and security for those in the eyes of IDA. She does not seem to be as sweet as apple CIDA. Be safe.

Creative and Monday fast puzzle - nice that the PRICE was CUT in all the different varieties as the puzzle progressed.

The Tour Championship is this coming week, the PGA Championship was earlier this year at Kiawah in SC. Yesterday's BMW championship had a wild finish- I thought I was turning it on to see the last few holes but then Dechambeau and Cantlay tied at -27 for a sudden death playoff that took 6 holes to finish! I think we had all memorized the 17th & 18th holes by the time Patrick Cantlay birdied for the win

Thanks CC & Boomer for a Burnikel day!

I cut through this one in 4:05.

Was surprised to see a clue referring to a presidential biographer, especially on a Monday.

Maybe someday I'll remember the Vampire Diaries protagonist.

Good luck avoiding Ida.

Boomer, the problem with grocery store price cuts is everybody waits for it. They're called bogos here.

"Cadillac Foe LEXus". Cool, I like that
Halloween was the EVE of All Saints Day. I see D-O beat me to it. BTW, I forgot to suss the theme

Re. BRUT.. Does anybody use aftershave ie scented? I put a dab of aloe, splash some witch hazel and cool off my face.

Boomer, watch out for those EVIL SPLITS*

Jinx, that's the FedEx Championship. Complicated prize package. FedEx winner is not necessarily this weekend's winner. Thanks IH for the BMW recap. Are we rooting against Bryson like we once rooted against Jack?

Aaarrrggghhh!!! I just realized CC authored this Monday xword. I noticed it had a little BITE for a Monday

Good Morning:

Nice to see CC’s byline any day but nicer on Boomer’s blogging day. I noticed the Ps and the Ce endings but was throw off by the one ance vs the two ice endings. IOW, I pulled a DO and missed the theme until the reveal. (BTW, DO, your comment about Rush the other day made me think you’re campaigning for CED’s Imp title. And, where is that CED?) Anyway, the puzzle was fun to solve and, unusually for a Monday, perps were needed for Elena, Ryan, and Dirt Pies. I liked Boils above Rice and Bite next to Deli. Also liked Eels/Reels, Ali/Alt, and Cape/Aped.

Nice job, CC, thanks and thanks to Boomer for the humor and nostalgia. Sledding was one of the joys of our youth, as was ice skating on ponds in bitter-cold weather and taking refuge in a make-shift shack to thaw ourselves with a cup of hot chocolate.

SwenglishMom, SwampCat and Staili, do drop in more often and WendyBird, it’s nice to see you on a more regular basis. I enjoy your comments!

FLN

Coincidentally, I have a great niece who is an incoming freshman and another great niece who recently started working there. BTW, is it great niece or grand niece?

I hope all those affected by Ida are safe and not suffering greatly.

Have a great day.

TTP said...

Good morning. Thank you, C.C. and thank you Boomer.

Shoulda been fast, but after a very long and restless night, the solve was anything but fast. Plus, the film coverage of Ida being shown on the news had most of my attention. Did see the theme after the first two, and pretty much guessed that the reveal would be PRICE CUTS or something akin to it, such as cut prices.

- Had a few typeovers along the way. So far before AS YET, Peril before PANIC and Feeble before FLIMSY.
- Hand up with Jinx for not knowing ELENA, DORIS and RYAN as clued.

As with inanehiker, yesterday afternoon I tuned into the BMW Championship late, and then got hooked as they dueled it out.

Watching it delayed my grilling of hot dogs and chicken sausages. I upped the ante by smothering my hot dogs and buns in chili. Yes, a long and restless night.

PK, FLN, thanks for the followup. Our heat wave with high humidity and high dew points is finally easing up and moving eastward.

-C.C.’s ELENA is more obscure than our usual Justice Kagan. Same with the many other RYANs
-WIFI – We entered the brave new world of ROKU yesterday. Each $29 unit saves us $10/month
-The ping of a softball on an aluminum BAT still does not ring true
-EMCEE – Alex Trebek always knew the show was not about him
-At least the GEICO animal is not alive but I’m not sure what the ASPCA thinks of the Emu

Elena and Ryan were all perps. No other unknowns. Some fill took a perp or two to dig up.
Doris Kearns was a gimme. I am a fan.
Acadia is a marvelous park. The nearby availability of yummy lobster and other seafood items is another plus.
Easter Eve. Thanksgiv9ng Eve.
I like the cute Geico gecko, but not so much, the other Geico ads.
I often see dirt cake presented in individual small flower pots. I think dirt cake and dirt pie use similar recipes. Online I see that it is presented in large containers, too.
I was daunted by the Sat. LAT and quit early. I can't focus with Alan here. Other times I am daunted but not discouraged. P&P pays off.

Started off with a visit from WC's Mr. Stupid, causing some mindless/wrong fill and messy grid. But in the end got a FIR. Nice consistent theme, C.C. and a puzzle with a bit of bite, as WC noted. Thanks. And thanks Boomer for your cheery review. I am glad you are taking good care of yourself with C.C.'s help.

WO's included Exalt/EXTOL and SLyER/SLIER. I will check perps first next time. They were very helpful in other areas to get ELENA and RYAN. I did know DORIS from news programs.

Hope all in Ida's path are doing OK. We have some time today before it gets this far. In the meantime my Vietnam vet husband is doing battle with army worms in our grass. Life is one thing after another. Best wishes to you all!

Jinx in Norfolk said...

Inanehiker and WC, you are correct, of course. The coming event isn't the PGA. Phil Mickleson won that one, becoming the oldest player to ever win a PGA major tournament. He also once won the final tournament in the PGA season but lost the FedEx Cup to Tiger, due to the old points system. That formula has been changed. The winner this weekend WILL win the FedEx Cup and its $15 million prize. Also, there is no longer a separate purse for the tournament at hand. Cantlay starts the tournament at 10 under par, Bryson will start at 7 under par, the lowest 4 start at even par. Lowest score at the end of the tourney wins.

Spitz - Funny stuff. I always wondered what made a person a big shot.

Great theme with everybody watching PRICEs bounce around these days. I saw the PR right after the second showed up, but needed the reveal to complete the word. This went fast for me and filled pretty easily, but my computer jumps around and really adds about twice the time.

Somehow, I wanted SLYER instead of SLIER. Both look weird to me.

Are irregular verb spellings going away? SPILT vs. SPILLED, Dreamt vs. Dreamed, etc.

Spitzboov said...

Agree with the above comments about ACADIA. One of its main features, Cadillac Mountain, has an elevation of 1500+ ft and his the highest prominence on the N. American east coast between Cape Breton Island and Mexico. It presents a strong radar signal at least 90 miles out into the Bay of Fundy, and so, is a useful navigational feature.

PK, Alan is here for most Saturdays and Sundays and will vacation with David and me for one week this summer.
He is on a ground diet except for foods like ice cream and pudding. I am successfully solving the problem while he is here by less extreme means.
I serve most foods normally, but I cut up a few of them toddler style. I watch every mouthful, insisting on small bites, one at a time, and completely emptying his mouth before taking another bite. It makes meals more appealing to him and saves me food processing everything.
His medicine dehydrates him and he must drink once or twice an hour. He can get the drinks himself, but I must thicken each one and watch that he doesn't chugalug. It means my popping up every time I sit down. Then he asks for numerous outings. I love having him here, but at my age I can only take this process on weekends.

Spilt or spilled? I read that both are acceptable, but spilled is more common in the US and the use of spilt is declining, as is dreamt, learnt, spelt, etc.

Thank you both for a fun experience and a neat and helpful commentary. You've gotten our week off to a great start!

I sailed through this one with only a little trouble in the south-middle corner. But with FLIMSY and EVIL it all filled in. Remembered Laila ALI's boxing legacy. Fun to get XEROX in a puzzle. Took me a bit to figure out how to spell GEICO. But it all worked out in the end.

Nice of you to take such good care of Alan, Yellowrocks.

Have a great week, everybody.

Fun PRICE CUT theme! ELENA and RYAN only unknowns. Easily filled by perps.

Here I was at ACADIA NATIONAL PARK

I had never been to Maine growing up back East. Had to wait until I was living in California to make it back there. The history of ACADIA NATIONAL PARK is fascinating. It was funded by oil barons who feared that the automobile would destroy natural areas. They would know! ACADIA NATIONAL PARK does not allow any motorized vehicles! It is best enjoyed by bicycle.

Thanks C.C. for the fine Monday puzzle. Thanks Boomer for the expo with a little (literal!) inside-baseball at Wriggly Field / TOPPS cards.

WO: AS now
ESPs: ELENA, RYAN
Fav: WIFI mirroring NERD is cute.

{A, B+}

ATLGranny - yep, I too knew DORIS (and Jon Meacham) from NPR/PBS shows.

Boomer - DW's Alfa Giulia "saves gas" by shutting off the engine when it is stopped. Annoying as Hell when trying to get out of the neighborhood onto the freeway [that extra 1/4 second is needed off the pole position!]
There's a button to shut that crap off -- I can't imagine the wear on the starter!
//I think all car manufacturers include this "feature" to meet MPG requirements

Jinx - LOL 'big shot' to Spitz's (funny) joke.

Pop told me this one last night:
Dad overhears daughter's EVEning PRAYER "And, say hi to Grandpa when he gets there."
Next day, her Grandfather is found dead.
And that night, Dad overhears the daughter again: "And say hi to my daddy when he gets there."
The entire next day, Dad is worried.
Really worried.
Cautious with every move he makes to avoid his fate;
He skips work to avoid driving, orders in dinner to avoid an accident in the kitchen, doesn't even take a shower to avoid slipping.
At 10pm, he gets a call from the neighbor's wife: "My husband just passed."

//I'm not sure what Pop was trying to tell me :-)

Play later!
Cheers, -T

Good morning.

Boomer, I meant to comment this morning, but, what Dash T said about the stop/start technology used by car manufacturer's these day to save fuel. DW finds it annoying, believes it adds undue wear on the starter, and can't possibly save much fuel for the limited driving that she does. So she found the setting in the owner's manual or she asked at the dealer. Turns out it's just a push button to turn it off, and it's the first thing she does after starting her car. I don't drive her car much so I forget, but she'll remind when we go somewhere together in her and I'm driving.

Irish Miss, my mother's mother was my grandmother. My grandmother's mother was my great-grandmother.

Right or wrong, I apply the same generational titles going the other way.

My sister's daughter is my niece. My niece's daughter is my grandniece. My grandniece's daughter is my great-grandniece. And I can't believe she's started her second year of college.

Thank you Mrs. and Mr. Burnikel for a fine Monday puzzle and a sparkling review. C.C. I liked your 3-way dicing of the theme. I'd have preferred my favorite, ShrimP fried RICE, but when you're cooking I'll eat whatever you put on the table!

Oh and Boomer, I wouldn't entertain a CUT IN your prices if I were you, as I predict they're going to start SOARING soon. If you haven't heard the news, see this Thursday's puzzle for details.

A few Favs:

5A MCRIB Like Boomer I haven't been to a Mickey Dees in years but that PROMO looks mouthwatering. Probably not good for my BP though.

16A I always like CAMIs, the briefer the better!

22A Ooh ODIE, all those delicious vowels!

23A I try to engage in Mass Communication everyday if possible.

17A We have a PRIVATE ENTRANCE to our Sun room for our Son, who sometimes works there when he drops off GD #2 at school and he has an early conference call. Plus our WIFI has better bandwidth than back at his place.

38A Winter glider: "ROSEBUD".

64A No used crying over SPILT SPELT. If you keep your kitchen floor clean you can just whisk them up and have them for breakfast.

66A DOES. We have few of them in our backyard, along with several FAWNS and a BUCK. And we have an 8' DEER fence around our garden, because like me they'll eat anything!

Cheers,
Bill

Marvellous Monday. Thanks for the fun, C.C. and Boomer.
I FIRed and saw the PRICE CUTS theme. But I agree it had a little bite since I had several inkblots.

Hand up for Item before TASK, and AD man before REP.
I had VICE filled into the end of 23A and entered deVICE which made no sense when PRAYERS filled in on the front. Has some NERD invented a prayer machine (with WIFI)?🤔😮😁. Perps set me straight.

Another hand up for Feeble before FLIMSY.
I’ve been burned before, so I waited for perps to decide on Y or I in SLIER.

I noted WED and ELOPE, plus IDLE and REV (or was the REV needed for the PRAYER SERVICE.
This Canadian did not know DORIS.
I made DIRT Cake with gummy worms for my son’s birthday party one year (in a clean new hanging flower basket and served with a clean new trowel). All those little boys loved it! (As I recall, it had crushed OREOs on top of the whipped cream.)

Picard- love those Acadia photos (especially the lupins).
Ray-o- LOL re MCRIB!
Stay safe out there. We finally got a good rain last night, but we don’t want Ida.

Wishing you all a great day.

Husker @9:18 AM You're in for a treat - Lucy Lawless' (Xena, Warrior Princess) Series two of "Murder is my life premiers TODAY on Acorn. They drop 1 episode a week through October, however you should start by bingeing Series one. Great fun.

Spitz @10:43 AM I believe Cadillac Mountain also sees the Sun rise earlier than any other site in the US. And I believe Attu Island at the tip of the Aleutians sees it the latest.

Ray - O @11:13 AM "PRAYER SERVICE" is a pretty broad term and can include not only the Mass, but also any of the hours of the "Divine Office" (aka Liturgy of the Hours), as well as a "Communion Service" (the term you're looking for I think). The latter has most of the elements of the Mass (Penitential Rite, Readings, Intercessions, Lord's prayer, etc.), except for the Eucharistic Prayer, which of course can only be said by a Priest. Communion Services can be conducted either by Eucharist Ministers or Deacons. If conducted by a Deacon he can also include a homily. DW and I conducted many of them at a local Senior facility pre-pandemic and we're still waiting for them to re-open.

Picard @12:18 PM Robert, I absolutely LOVED the pics of Acadia, which brought back many FOND memories! We've vacationed there twice and I recognized many of the sites we saw in your pics. One of my favorite memories was seeing and hearing my first LOON on an early morning hike around Jordan Pond. Such beautiful birds and such an ETHEREAL song. I'm not sure if we'll ever go back, especially as we've heard that the "Opera House", a fabulous restaurant, has closed. I don't recall the exact name, but they served a steak dish stuff in a pastry, named for Rosa Ponselle (Wellington Ponselle?), truly worthy of LA DIVINA. Ah, memories.

Waseeley, it depends on how you define "US." Guam's motto is "Where America's day begins." Their official greeting is "håfa adai," similar to Hawaii's "aloha." It's also their work preference. It's pronounced "half-a-day."

Just as I suspected reg. Gas shot up 15cents overnight. And my regular. Gas Honda sitting idle at empty. Grrrr.

Picard don't you love those old bridges that span north New England.

A neat C.C. PZL, a bit tricky in places.

I got hung up for a while when I filled CLUMSY instead of FLIMSY for 47D.
Finally came to my senses--after I studied PORK CRIED RICE for the longest time.

Canada Eh, We left Acadia National Park and took the ferry from Bar Harbor Me. to Nova Scotia, Never made it to New Brunswick. Curious why the Latin name "Nova Scotia" instead of "New Scotland" for the province. Other countries refer to it in their own translation of New Scotland like "Nouvelle Écosse" or "Nuova Scozia" Just sayin'

Late to the party today; been busy. Liked this puzzle, the writeup, and all your comments.

Our power is about to be shut off. Wilbur Charles or someone else who has access to the puzzles in advance: Can you please send me tomorrow's (Tuesday's) puzzle via email? You can send it to me at earthmanrobert (at) gmail.com Thanks!

CanadianEh, WA Seeley, Wilbur Charles, Husker Gary Thank you for the very kind words about my ACADIA NATIONAL PARK photos!

Since I lived in New England during part of my youthful years I took a lot of this scenery for granted. It is true that we don't have these scenes in California. There is a trade-off. The NORTHEAST is very lush. But our California desert landscape allows broad, open vistas. Hard to have both!

With all the talk of Cadillac Mountain I will add that the first photo in my set is at the top of Cadillac Mountain. Of course, where I live now it would just be called a "hill"!

AnonT Thanks for the amusing joke! But it seems that no one has the answer about the TOMBs!

- T @ 2:37: "Pork Slurry"! Sounds like what the Creature from the Lagoon winds up being: animated pork slurry.

But of course,. hamburger is only 'cow slurry' ....

-T @ 2:55 -- you're really on a roll today! There is a science-fiction story from, maybe, 60 or 70 years ago, about an electronic, robotic ass (roboass in the story) who is the mentor for the man who was to become pope. The story was set on Mount Diablo just east of Danville in East Bay California. Beyond that, memory fails, but the roboass was an electronic monk, of sorts.

FIR, but I forgot to look for the theme. Makes me mad, because I MIGHT have figured out this one.

Thanks, C.C. and Boomer! I enjoyed both the puzzle and the expo.

I really like McRibs. They can be messy, though, if there is too much sauce on them.

Ray-o- at Canada.ca, we find the answer to your Nova Scotia question

“ Nova Scotia was named by Sir William Alexander, who received a grant to all the land between New England and Newfoundland from King James VI of Scotland (King James I of England) in 1621. The official charter was in Latin and the name "New Scotland" retained its Latin form — Nova Scotia.”

Here’s another interesting connection to today’s CW
“ All of Nova Scotia – as well as parts of Quebec, New Brunswick and Maine – was originally known as Acadia and mainly settled by the French”

The things we learn here . . .

WC thanks for the music. I thoroughly enjoy and look forward to Alan's visits. We have fun. My problem with the visits is not my nerves, but my stamina for performing all the regimens. I am slowing down. About being a grandma, my mom used to say, "Now I know why God gives babies to the young." But, she loved our kids. She did have six of her own.
Picard, thanks for the lovely Acadia pictures and the fond memories of the beautiful scenery and the yummy lobsters. Did you take pictures of the summer "cottages" of the wealthy?

YR: So sorry to hear about Alan's problems with eating & drinking. Bless you for your good-mother's heart wanting to take good care of him and have him in your home. Does he have Parkinson's? My sis-in-law had to do a similar routine with my brother who had Parkinson's. I know what you mean about the lack of stamina being aggravating after a life-time of being an active doer.

TTP, thanks, I'll look into those settings.

Picard, unfortunately my access to weeks xwords is a paper insert from the Sunday TBTimes. I thought of a picture but I've already inked in Tuesday.

Tuesday is easy but starts with 1a/1d Natick which I hope I WAG'ed OK.

YR, I was thinking that the music would be therapeutic for Alan.
