FIR, but erased hoot for WHOO, rube for RIDE, and cream for CREMA. DNK Shailene or Divergent, MARC, DRESS DOWN FRIDAY, BELA, and Styles/ONED. I thought a "pony" was a 1/4 barrel keg. Hand up for a nose wrinkle at RESIT.

Going into the start of conference play, the University of Kentucky is ranked twentieth in the country, the lowest of the five SEC teams in the top 25. Wanna bet that they won't finish better than 5th in the SEC? We'll know a lot when UK visits LSU on January 4th.

Thanks for the fun puzzle, Henry. Handy perps eliminated guessing. But my delicate sensibilities WERE stressed at SNAFU. Such language! And thanks to Hahtoolah for another visual treat.

Good morning!

Just as fast as yesterday -- no Wite-Out required. Never heard of a DRESS-DOWN FRIDAY, only CASUAL FRIDAY. My employer made ties optional in the late '90s, and I haven't worn one since, though dw swears she's got one squirreled away for emergencies. Do people really listen to music on DVD? CD and USB, yes, DVD, no. Nice one, Henry. Enjoyed the tour, Hahtoolah. (Eddy Redmayne is really tall for a pre-nate.)

QVC: Have seen those letters for years, and finally learned what they stood for last night on Jeopardy!.

This year is rapidly running out of gas. We're supposed to stay abnormally warm through New Year's Day, and then it'll turn abominably cold.

Good Morning, crossword friends. Thank's for your eagle eyes, Deeper-otto!

It's another exceptionally warm (hot) day here, too, then a quick u-turn to the cold.

Welcome to the LAT Henry and to the friendliest blog in crossword captivity. Please come by and tell us about yourself. By my research, this is your second puzzle published in one of the major sites, the earlier last Wednesday in the Universal.

This does seem a bit lite on theme, but it is a diverse introduction to solving with all sorts of information which might be known to very experienced solvers but not to newbies. LORI GREINER is a perfect example having become a reality TV star on SHARK TANK a show not everyone watches.

Hahtoolah, as always your search for entertainment produced much enjoyment. Thank you and Henry

This was Monday easy with less perps needed. No 'congrats' on last fill and like Jinx I had hoot/WHOO.

I have VA Echo-C today with dreaded stress test. I'll solve Wednesday if there's slow time.

I always enjoy hahtoolah write-ups

WC

BTW, I expect Kentucky will be at the top of the SEC by March

ATLGranny said...

Well, it finally happened. A Tuesday FIW at the crossing of LORI and HARD. I left an N there, though further thought might have caught it as I made changes. I too put hoot for WHOO, but my last fill was UMPTEENTH! First time I've seen it in a puzzle. And OREO made its daily appearance. Misty will be happy to see it again. Welcome, Henry, and thanks for an interesting puzzle.

Thanks, Hahtoolah, for clearing up my confusion in such an entertaining way. No, I couldn't name the Muses.

On to the rest of the day. Hope everyone is doing well.

Back home today, and treated to a fun Tuesday CW, thanx, HLD. Several DNKs, but perps flew right in to fill the gap. I, too, have only heard it called “casual Friday”, not dress down Friday, but it works in the CW, so…. Anyway FIR in a prize winning 17 minutes. Thanx Hahtoolah for for very interesting and entertaining write-up. I especially liked the mantis-eyes link.

Good morning. This one took 4:44 to finish. Coincidentally, a "t" was my last square (the second one in "twit).

I originally had creme instead of crema, and only know Ms. Greiner from Shark Tank.

ATLGranny @7:25 I'm with you on LONI/HAND, for a rare Tuesday FIW.

Nice puzzle Henry and welcome to the Corner, a nice place to be in the Morning.

And thanks as always Hahtoolah. Loved your review and loved the QOD.

As with others, WHOO was not the first onomatopoeic form that came to mind.

Thanks Henry and Hahtoolah for your first-rate creations.

Good Morning:

Well, this was a typical Tuesday level of difficulty, I.e., easy peasy. Hand up for Hoot/Whoo (Hi, Misty) but no other w/os. Lori was unknown but the Hard cross helped. CSOs to Ray O and Anon T (Roma) and YR (Off-season Jersey Shore). T-Bar’s relevance went unnoticed until Hahtoolah pointed it out.

Thanks, Henry, for a Tuesday treat and thanks, Hahtoolah, for the chuckles and commentary. Love you QOD.

My day has started off with an email telling me that my request for an insurance quote on my Jaguar F Type is ready to access. I just checked my email again and there are five emails, all from insurance companies.) To add insult to injury, I have received seven calls from unknown numbers within the last 15 minutes, all unanswered, but one message left from Rocket Mortgage re my request (non-existent) for rate information. I was spam-free for ages until recently. Time for an address change, maybe.

Have a great day.

Hola!

A fine Tuesday finish for me and very fast. With long fill that spans across the grid it doesn't take too much time to solve.

Thank you, Henry and Hahtoolah.

I noticed some HARD Cs at TALC and MARC.

CSO to Misty at WHOO (HOO).

LORI is a friend from church.

Later. I have to return to bed.

Have a terrific Tuesday, everyone!

Another good puzzle this week with reasonable cluing. As usual, I loved Hahtoolah's write up and graphics.

Hand up for HOOT vs. WHOO and I tried to spell SONIA with a Y. Perps changed the slight missteps.

I haven't watched Shark Tank, so I didn't know LORI Greiner. I've never ordered anything from QVC on TV, but I have bought a number of items at their Outlet Store in Rehobeth, Delaware. Got the best little bean pot there.

IM: I seem to get a lot of spam calls about reducing my student debt, car warranties, the IRS going to arrest me if I don't buy them gift cards, Microsoft needing access to my computer to fix my hard drive problems, my grandson in jail who needs to be bailed out and a bunch of other Scams. I usually let them go to voice mail, but occasionally I will answer if I want to have a little fun and mess with them.

The year is winding down and I don't think I'm going to miss it. Hopefully 2022 will be a little better.

Have a great day everyone.

Easy Tuesday but didn't notice the T's

So pony = SHOTGLASS 🥃

Inkovers: hoot/WHOO, gib/JIB, flake/ FRITO,
REPAST means "meal"...Not sure TEA (and tIny cakes or mini sangwidges) qualifies. ***Cleo looking for a means of suicide realized all she had to do was ASP***🐍

DO we decided to make ties optional about 15 years ago. I must have a hundred I don't know what to do with. With Covid everyone now wears scrubs.

IM a Jaguar? (jag-U-ar for Canadian Eh?). Cool!!! 😊

FLN: C Moe, thanks for the compliment but I doubt I could meet the level of the current bloggers' information, entertainment and digital expertise, all to the delight of the restivus.

How they did target practice in the" Ole West" ...SHOTGLASS.
LAT CW on a Saturday...HARD
When Crusoe got ired with his companion he would _____ ...DRESS DOWN FRIDAY
Misty'd exclamation of success with Hoo...WHOO

On to humpday.

Terrific T Tuesday. Thanks for the fun, Henry and Hahtoolah.
I FIRed in good time with one inkblot to change crème to CREMA (Italian to match ROMA).
(We also had SUTRA and AGHA from other languages.)
NW corner was the last to fall.
Of course, I loved the T theme (and Hahtoolah’s great catch of the Easter egg at T-BARS).
This CW was TEEMing with TRIO, TRIS, TALC, TEENY, TONE, TWIT.

I know Erato from this Corner, but would be hard pressed to name the other eight Muses.
I did enter WHOO, but had Awl requiring a change to AWN (oh, that was a second inkblot).

Hand up for changing Loni to LORI (ok that was a third inkblot,). I recognized her photo and Shark Tank association. Yes, d’o, QVC definition from Jeopardy was timely.
I wanted to grant forgiveness after the apology, but it wouldn’t fit. AMNESTY is not an exact synonym.

IM- we had two calls before 9am re our Visa credit card. I expect two more before the end of the day.
FLN- AnonT- Ode to Joy for your desert isle exile! I would have guessed a Rush SONG!

Wishing you all a great day.

Update: It is now 11:18 and my scammer/telemarketer calls total 18. A little deduction tells me that someone used my email address and telephone number to generate this unheard of volume of emails and calls. Annoying to say the least.

Ray O at 10:10 ~ The only Jaguar I’m familiar with is the four-legged one! 😉😉

Ray-o- Afternoon tea for the Upper class Brits was a smaller sandwich, scones and pastries menu around 4 pm (to tide over until the evening meal at 8 pm). High tea for the working class was a hearty meal of meat, potatoes etc. between 5 and 7 pm after work.
So technically you are correct since the clue says Afternoon, which would refer to the lighter meal. But repast just means “meal” and can be light or sumptuous. Some present day Afternoon Teas (Prince of Wales in NOTL, Empress in Victoria) are definitely sumptuous.
Thanks for the U. I’ll take all of them that I can get. I wanted Tune today but got TONE; but then I was given SNAFU (to pair with SNAG).

Yellowrocks said...

Easy today. I noticed the times, but not the TEA homonyms. That made the theme more interesting. I seldom look for the theme in the clues. This is the second occurrence this week.
I enjoyed the owl vocalizations. I was surprised how different they are from each other. IMO only the barred owl call is anywhere near WHOO or HOOT.
I watch Shark Tank from time to time and also have seen Lori on commercials lately. I hesitated between HAND and HARD, but EXPERT and LORI decided HARD.
In the sanitized version of SNAFU the F stands for FOULED.
Thanks for the lovely Bartok piece, Susan.
IMO Bachelorette is so fake. How can you fall in love in such a short time under the glare of the camera. One couple married and went on a honeymoon cruise. From the beginning of the cruise the bride refused to have anything to do with the husband, even sit with him at dinner. How many of these marriages work out?

Fun Tuesday puzzle--many thanks, Henry, I really enjoyed it. And Hahtoolah, your pictures are just wonderful, one after another, all delightful.

Ironically, I had trouble getting WHOO because I didn't know AWN.
And then there come all these kind shout-outs from folks who identify Misty with WOOHOO.
How did I make that happen! Who cares, delightful to hear from you all, Irish Miss, Lucina, Ray, and maybe others. Made my day.

Oh, and thanks, Granny, for remembering that I like OREOs. (Especially recently, when they seem to pop up in puzzles just about every day).

I kept wondering if Captain Hook's right hand was wounded or lame or hurt in some way: oh, right hand MAN: SMEE.

Irish Miss so sorry to hear about all that Spam problem you're having. I used to get a lot of that too, but am now blessed with only a rare phone call these days. In my case it may be because after I lost my sweet Rowland (the phone was in his name) they made me change my phone number, and I seem thankfully not to have been discovered yet. A real blessing. Anyway, I'll keep my fingers crossed that maybe you can get some help with that problem.

Have a great day, everybody.

FIR, but I don't really care for this type of theme. I prefer themes that involve the answers, not the clues. But I was impressed by the theme answers spanning the entire puzzle.

We see T-BAR so often that I looked it up. Primitive and a bit scary!
Has anyone here actually used a T-BAR?

Here we were at BRIDAL VEIL Falls at Yosemite.

From Yesterday:
Lucina Sorry that you never learned to ride a bicycle. There is no age limit to learn. But your explanation about lacking sense of balance indicates it may be wise to avoid it now.

Vidwan Glad that you also experienced the joy of the Tel Aviv Promenade. DW did not want to be a PEDAL PUSHER all the way to Jaffa, so we took the bus the rest of the way. Good that you also were a part of the electron microscope world. They require careful sample preparation; our microscopes avoid that need while having higher resolution. But there are still advantages to the electron microscope for very irregular samples.

WHOO—a nice easy Tuesday; FIR in abt 9 minutes. Unlike so many today, I never considered HOOT; it was WHOO all the way.

Liked the Hook—SMEE pair.

Mostly just did the across clues… seldom needed to check the downs.

Has anyone ever tried to count the number of times OREO appears here?

Snowing like crazy here in northeast IL, and looking for lows between 8 and 12 degrees Fahrenheit tonight. Lots of neighborhood kids out snowballing and snowmanning. Roads haven’t all been salted yet and it’s pretty slick and slidey all over. Winter… I do love it. Can’t imagine living somewhere without four distinct seasons.

Hahtoola, you outdid yourself today! Very enjoyable and informative.

Feels like a nap coming up. See you possibly tomorrow perhaps.

Hi Y'all! Great puzzle, Henry! Very amusing, Hahtoolah. Thanks to you both.

Like Jinx, I thought a pony was a keg. Many years ago my shy, non-party-type daughter collected money for a pony keg when her senior class was planning a party at the lake. I was shocked. She said, "Well, mother, I wasn't planning to drink any of it.!" And she didn't. Designated driver for her giggle of girl friends.

WHOO! Big treat, got to see the big owl I hear every night, sitting up high in a big bare tree. He swooped down and made a pass over my back yard so I got to see his wing span. Think he is a Great Horned Owl. I love birds.

IM: Oh shucks, I thought maybe someone had gifted you that Jaguar for Xmas.

DNK: TRIS, AGHA, WI-FI, One D. Did happen to know LORI.

Chairman Moe said...

Puzzling thoughts:

FII (last I = Incomplete). RESIT and TRIS became my Natick as I refused to select between RESAT and RESIT and TRIS and TRAS. Now if 22-Across clue was: "Hall of Fame outfielder Speaker" I would've gotten it for sure

W/O's: CREME/CREMA; SONYA/SONIA. I can't believe how lowsy my spelling has become

Thanks Susan (I guess) for the SO at TRIO/The Stooges! I always think of Moe as the "Head Stooge", but Curly was my favorite

Repast seems to be a thing eaten , usually with a beverage. Tea , of course, means a lot more than a beverage but usually short of a full meal.

Picard, I remember riding the T-bar at North Conway. 60s. Nice pic.

TRIS Speaker's pop-up was misplaced by a TRIO* of Giants in 1912. TS told Mattie, "That just lost you the WS" and proceeded to drive in the winning runs on the next pitch.

Picard, I have used many T-bars through the years and still ride one occasionally. They are, indeed, a bit awkward. Ski resorts use(d) them because they are less expensive to own and operate than are chairlifts. The trick is to not sit down.

The first T-bar I ever rode was at Badger Pass, Yosemite when I first learned how to ski. I had to drape my arms over the T-bar rather than ride it as intended.

WHOO- new to me for a 'hoot' owl even though it sounds "who"; why the extra 'O'?
ONE D & Harry Styles- never heard of either
LORI Greiner- unknown to me and I have blocked all shopping channels so they never show up on any of our televisions
PONY- I've heard of pony-size beers but not a term for a smaller shot glass.
TRIS, Shailene & 'Divergent"- unknowns

IDOL- not those two for sure. Cher can't hit a correct note and Adele's voice just rubs me the wrong way.

Thank you Mr. Henry Lin-David for a very nice puzzle, which I enjoyed very much.
I solved the puzzle early this morning EST, but then, I had to go over and wait at a hospital in unfamiliar Noo Joisey, for a close relative, in the ICU ... long story.
Hence this delay in posting.

Thank you Hah!-two-La for your lovely cartoons, which really cheered me up,
and the cute info on Praying Mantises ... or was that Prey-ing Mantises.

Did you know that most Female Mantises ALWAYS EAT their male mates ... during the mating process ... either before copulation, ... or sometimes afterwards. Infact, the male half eaten portion of the corpse, will still mate with the female who is devouring him ...

There are plenty of Youtube videos on this subject, but too horrific to link.

I am a committed feminist, but this seems to be going too far. Maybe the female Mantises's should just slap the males silly, ... or Diss them ... or maybe just smoke a cigarette after copulation. There is no need to kill them, no matter how rough the men may appear to be....

Picard, Thank you for reading my comments, ... I have seen the Bridal Veil falls at Yosemite, but I thought the famous one was, the bridal veil falls at the Niagara Falls, which is in my back yard.
*****************

Regarding the electron microscopy, I have a whole test book of original photographs of the human hair, coated with Pt or gold sputter coating - to make them conducting. It is fascinating to see how the hairs grow as a smooth set of cones, one upon the next ...

Unfortunately, a friend of mine .... The microscopist, who used to sit around the electron telescope/microscope, developed prostate cancer, which metastasized and caused his eventual demise, a few years ago... and I talked to a couple of urologists and asked them whether the electron gun ( through side leakage of electrons ...) could have caused the virulent form of cancer, but they said no...

Lucina, Picard is absolutely right .... regarding your learnig to ride a bicylce, now. In view, of your advanced age, it is definitely NOT a good idea to try to learn how to ride a bike, since you may have serious balancing issues.

Have a happy New Year everybody,
and hopefully the next year will bring us better news and more happiness for all of us.

Look forward to the Wednesday, puzzle.
Have a nice evening, you all.

Vidwan, the copulation & eating of the male mantis by the female brings a whole new meaning to the phrase "and the two shall be as one" in the marriage literature. Not nice.

Since I've written a couple poems listing them all over the years,
I thought I'd try listing them all. I got 7, and most I pegged right on their fields.

Four types of poetry:
- Erato = I claim lyric poetry when I cite her as my first Muse, but the list I checked on had erotic poetry. I guess that would include traditional limericks.
- Polyhymnia = sacred poetry, easy since she has hymns in her name.
- Calliope = epic poetry and rhetoric; my Muse back in my Toastmaster days. I misremembered her as music, since she lends her name to a circus organ.
- Euterpe = this is one I forgot and she really is lyric poetry.

Moving away from poetry, we have:
- Thalia = My second Muse, comedy and humor.
- Melpomeni = the other one I forgot, Thalia's opposite, tragedy and drama.
- Terpsichor = dance, but I forgot also music.
-Clio = history. The name today of the award for advertisements; make of that what you will.
- Urania = astronomy, a strange field to need a Muse, I think.
