Too many names, especially for a Monday. DNK RAIMI ONEIL LLOSA SOO LEN. So lotsa perp work needed to finally FIR in 18. I also take exception: a tire is not a wheel, whether on a car, a truck, or a bicycle. Other than that an O.K. CW, thanx, JH. You definitely created a better CW than I am capable of. Thanx too to Boomer for his, as usual, entertaining and informative write-up. My Packers didn’t play at all well and lost to the Giants yesterday. I hope they never play in London again. Slacker’s Packer Bar here in FLL made no special menu accommodations for it being a 9:30am game, not even having coffee on the menu, and I ended up drinking beer and eating bratwurst with sauerkraut at 10am. Combine that with the Packers losing, and my whole Sunday was shot.

Good morning!

Good to see that you're up for today's challenge, Boomer. It's quite a feat to create an interesting early-week crossword. Nice debut, Justin. My only stumble was BOMB where FLOP needed to go.

Jinx in Norfolk said...

A Monday FIW x 2: DJaBOUTI x ONEaL, and LLOSi x OUIJi (UNTIE!). Also DNK RAIMI, AME and SOO. But I didn't erase anything, so there's that.

"Did you ____?" made me think of many four-letter options before EVER. Most have been asked of me and/or by me.

Thanks to Justin for the fun Monday(?) puzzle. And thanks to Boomer for the smiles.

KS said...

FIW, the crossing of Llosa and ouija did me in when I spelled it ouiji, and had never heard of the writer. Also, too many proper names for a Monday puzzle in my opinion.

Yellowrocks said...

CC and Boomer,
It is with great sadness this morning that I read of the Boomer's diagnosis. My thoughts are with you both at this sad time. May memories of the special love you shared uphold you. I admire the courage and humor both of you brought to these past difficult months. Although very sad, I am celebrating the life of our wonderful cyber friend. With this blog, Boomer, I see you are still "keeping on keeping on." What a mensch!

Subgenius said...

This puzzle seemed exceptionally difficult for a Monday, with such proper names as “Llosa” and “Soo” as well as the African nation of Djibouti. Nevertheless, as I FIRed, so I’m happy.

Anonymous said...

Took 4:38 for me to put this one away.

I second the comments by our UncleFred earlier. Seemed like a lot of proper names, especially for a Monday, but the obscurity of the proper names is what surprises me (Llosa, Len somebody, Soo).

Keep fighting, Boomer.

YooperPhil said...

Boomer ~~ was hoping to see you taking the reins today and my wish was granted, nothing seems to keep you down, and you always seem in good spirits with all you’ve faced lately, wishing you all the best (and may you walk away from that casino with some of their money, a fitting b/day gift for you!) You certainly have a great partner with C.C.! I’ve actually been to Sven and Ole’s up in Grand Marais, really good pizza!

I agree this puzzle was a little crunchy for a Monday...DJIBOUTI?? Never heard of it, LLOSA? him neither. JARJARBINKS? guess I’m not up on Star Wars. RAIMI? Another unknown. But the perps were kind and I managed a FIR in 11:32. Actually figured out the theme without a reveal OR Anonymous’s dreaded circles.

Justin ~~ congrats on your LAT debut, a very fine CW and I enjoyed the solve!

inanehiker said...

Quick and diverse puzzle - when the theme answers range from "CAN I HELP YOU?" to the infamous JAR JAR BINKS!

My only erasures were starting to write Sam Mendes (of James Bond films) and had to change to RAIMI for the film director. In my allergy-eyed state, read 55D clue as "detect" so I had FEEL which had to change to FLAW when perps made me realize the clue was actually "defect"

I always enjoy LEN Cariou as an actor - such a varied career from musicals- being the original Sweeney Todd to Shakespeare to TV (recently the father of Tom Selleck in Blue Bloods)

Thanks Boomer for the always amusing blog and congrats to Justin on his debut!

Irish Miss said...

Good Morning:

I had no trouble with the solve because the perps were fair but, like several others, I think the plethora of proper names is not Monday friendly fill, especially, Djibouti, Llosa, and O’Neil. I only saw the theme when I finished, so there was that plus and, also, I always appreciate a fairly low three letter word count. Overall, an easy and smooth Monday solve.

Thanks, Justin, and Congrats on your debut and thanks, Boomer, for just being the Boomer we know and love and care so much about. You and CC are my heroes.

Has anyone watched the two new TV series Alaska Daily and East New York? Hilary Swank stars in the former and Jimmy Smits is in the latter, I enjoyed both and hope they maintain the solid story lines.

CED, if you’re not too busy, check your email.

Have a great day.

Sherry said...

I count 22 proper names. Way too many. Then 3 french words. Knew 11 of the proper names. As far as Lord of the Rings or Star Wars clues you can leave me out.

Yikes a FIW on a Monday: DJaBOUTI crossing ONEaL 😧.

Don't quite get the theme with "caps"? Jars (have lids) case, can, box? ("Justin" is a young guy's name and it's his first time so give him a pass)

It was PAAS-itively the only Easter egg coloring (DYE) kit I ever remember. Didn't know RAIMI or Mr. BINKS.

The new "Lord of the Rings" has the most incredible CGI. But when are the Elves gonna stop slaughtering ORCS in battle and go back to the North Pole and make toys? Christmas is coming 🧝‍♀️🧝‍♂️.

Didn't know banjo strings were made of blue grass 😄.. (I learn so much here). Almost put ASK in.. but those Roman TOGAS perped me in the right direction. IMO a bicycle wheel and TIRE are two separate things. I had put gear then inkovered

"
"Covered in frosting" ICED

Sign on the only house in Eden...Adam & ____ place... YVES
Comedy team ____ & Martin....ROAN
Dislike steeped leaves....HAITI

Everyone enjoy the holiday whatever you prefer to call it.

Best wishes Boomer.

 “It’s only a game” is what Malaika Handa told us Saturday
 I have to go over the speed limit to keep up with most SEMIS
 SYNC – The performers on American Bandstand had a lot of instruments and backup singers you could never see
 OUIJA board – “You’re pushing it! “No, I’m not, you are!”
 Bent Tree golf course in Council Bluffs, Iowa has lion grass in the rough. If you say you found your ball, you’re lyin’!
 FORE on a perfect fall day!

Yellowrocks said...

Easy enough for a Monday, however DNF. I misspelled Djibouti and so chose the wrong ONEIL spelling. Hello, Ray. I also misspelled OUIJA ending it in I, so I missed the A in LLOSA. Two bad cells.
I knew both Djibouti and Ouija but not the spelling. Never heard of RAIMI and LLOSA. I have heard of Len Cariou. I guessed the theme after CASE and CAN.
Does Patti read this blog? Does she know how many of us are turned off by so many names?
Ray, my thought exactly, a wheel is not a tire.

Hi All!

First, Jinx - you're computer should be fine. It looks like click-bait. //I ran the URL through my sandbox - nothing dangerous.

Well, Justin, your puzzle was one heck of a workout. Like KS, I FIW at OUIJi | LLOSi.

Contractually, I'm to despise any puzzle with JAR JAR BINKs in it - so you've also got that going against you too :-)

Lovely to read you this morning, Boomer. Say what they will but you're a hell of a trouper.

WOs: N/A
ESPs: WEES re: names
Fav: Did you EVER? [That Dog]

Ohps, there's work. Gotta run.

Not a whole lot of comments on today's puzzle other than it didn't "feel" like a Monday, as I had to look up LLOSA to get SOO and LOFTED. I originally had BOX OFFICE BUST before FLOP

Just one more week of RENT and then we OWN - the boxes are piling up - stress levels are increasing - moving sucks - gotta think positive

Hola!

It's Monday so that means I have to hustle to get to my volunteer gig.

Thank you, Justin Wefel and Boomer! Boomer, no one would ever guess about your condition. You are the bees knees!

I've not heard of author LLOSA but perps were kind; SOO either.

Hah! I spelled DJIBOUTI correctly!

Must go now. Later. Have a great Monday, everyone! Happy holiday to Canadian Eh.

Turkey Tail Mushrooms for cancer treatment were are learning moment. I doubt that they are something you can find at the local store. But I have seen them hiking the woods, and even in my backyard. Boomer Very happy to see you here in good spirits. You are an inspiration to us all.

unclefred, RayOSunshine, Yellowrocks Thank you for calling out one of my pet peeves regarding TIRE. I have actually heard this misused by other people, but I expect better here. Perhaps our new editor needs an editor to catch such mistakes?

Has anyone ever heard DOPES used to mean PUZZLES OUT?

Hand up FIW with DJABOUTI/ONEAL. Glad to hear the chorus of "too many proper names" is continuing. Even if the new editor so far ignores our CHANT.

Here I photographed the Forum in ROME with the Colosseum in the background.

I join the crowd with Djibouti crossing O'Neil. The "a" got me. Seems vowels are my downfall! Likewise with Ouija and Llosa. He appeared Sunday in the Frank Longo puzzle and I made note of it because of the double "L" but was "sure" phonetically that it was "ouiji! Another vowel mishap. Patti, I think you're doing a fine job and bringing in lots of new talent. Boomer, thanks for an enlightening write up. I second all the good thoughts and prayers coming your way.

Just like many others, I had a slow solve for a Monday. The theme was also kind of "meh", even for an early week puzzle. I also typed in BOMB before FLOP. Luckily I knew DJIBOUTI so I didn't get Naticked there, but still not Monday-level fill.

Because I had LOBBED instead of LOFTED, I had BOX OFFICE BOMB (or maybe it was the other way around). I see several of you also did. I totally wrinkled my nose at a TIRE being clued as a wheel and agree with those of you who had the same reaction. On the positive side, I knew how to spell DJIBOUTI, so that ruled out OWENS as Buck's last name. I also knew how to spell OUIJA, so I had L-OSA, but wanted an H, thinking his name was LHOSA. Silly me, I must have been thinking of Tibet. And besides, HOBBED or HOFTED didn't seem right, so LLOSA it was. This is an instance of when it is possible to figure out an unknown person's name from perps, which is, as we all agree, all well and good. I also was able to fill HOSEA from perps; as our dear departed tuba player used to say, five perps and I had it. Three perps and I conquered SOO, too.

Interesting about Turkey Tail mushrooms.

CED, you are 100% forgiven.

Good wishes to you all.

Picard - DW showed me around the ancient runes in Rome a few years ago. Amazing! Thanks for the snaps.
//I gotsta ask our Hebrew friends - Does BC rub y'all the wrong way?

OHM... CED - I still haven't seen a cake for a Belated HBD to Jayce (who knows what an ohm is :-)).

Sumdaze - I too enjoyed the 'marginal work" of SPY vs. SPY. I wanted that answer so badly last week!
(remember, Spy v. Spy was oft off in the margins of MAD //if I have to explain a joke...)

"DOPE" it out makes me think of Tom & Ray, AKA Click 'n' Clack, the Tappet Brothers. Some Baseball memories from the boys.

As others noted, too many names that I didn't know. Perps helped, but it was still a DNF Monday. That's not supposed to happen.

Boomer, I hope that there are other treatments that can work.

It's a beautiful cool Fall day here. I hope it is for everyone.

Jinx Thanks for the reply about DOPE IT OUT. I guess it is a learning moment that this is something some people say!

Wilbur Charles I am very happy you were able to watch my short CHAMELEON catching food with its tongue video!

Have you tried contacting T-Mobile to see if they can provide Hotspot service in your area? My friend is also in an odd area with poor Internet service and he says this has worked well for him. And at low cost. But they only provide it in some places. Unfortunately, not in our neighborhood.

AnonT Way cool that you also got to experience the wonders of ROME! Thank you for the kind words about my photo there.

To answer your other question: Thanks for asking. Yes, it is indeed odd that we are still using the AD/BC calendar. I say that as one of Hebrew origin and also as a scientist. I think we need something like Star Dates from Star Trek!

The one concession has been that AD and BC are no longer used by historians. It is now CE for Common Era and BCE for Before Common Era. Our puzzle people haven't gotten the memo about that nor about the fact that GMT is no longer a thing.

Jayce Thanks for validating that this use of TIRE is just wrong.

Yep! I've heard DOPES in that context. Several times.
I don't remember hearing it IRL, but I recall it several times on TV--in game shows and cop dramas.
The latter are where I pick up most of my street slang.
(Isn't that where most of America gets its lingo?)

Sorry to see that the recent cancer treatment isn't going so well, Boomer, but I believe your good spirits are a tremendous asset. Glad to know that "Turkey Tail" 'shrooms are full of promise.

Hi. Used to post occasionally, but have only lurked for a long time now.

First, Boomer, I have always enjoyed your posts, and am so sorry that treatments are not working. My thoughts are with you.

I don't regularly post for several reasons: This is such a closeknit community with many longtime friends and I tend to be insecure about injecting my thoughts.
Second, I don't solve the way so many here do; I only feel that I've completed a puzzle if I have examined every single clue/answer both across and down, and so would never be able to say that I have missed seeing some. Third, I like proper names! Sorry, but though I certainly don't know them all, the certainty that comes with knowing/figuring out one is much preferable --for me -- to the level of ambiguity that is part of a great many clues.

But I always enjoy reading posts; thank you.

Again -- Boomer, I hope for you the very best.
