Nice early week offering. "Country star Travis" could be MERLE, TRITT or RANDY. Let the perps decide. Went wrong with APRON before SMOCK. I noticed several entries with letters not normally seen together: NPR, F-STOP, R.C.COLA, SNL, C'MON. Thanx, Kyle. Good to see you in fine fettle, Boomer.
Mid-Terms: I now receive more than 100 "send money" emails daily, and I've deleted several important emails which got caught up in the trash pile. I'll be happy when this madness ends. I don't remember this much interest in previous mid-term elections.

Our RV is supposed to finally be ready today. Dropped it off for a fuel leak, and the AC compressor seized during the checkout drive, burning off the serpentine belt. They had trouble getting the compressor, but they got and installed it last week. They have some final tweaks to do that couldn't be done outside last week because it was too cold, but it will be much warmer today (they didn't have a bay available Thursday or Friday). It's a six-hour drive, so we're taking "motel gear" in case they don't wrap it up today.
FLN - WC, Betsy must have gotten up on the wrong side of the bed. She was certainly in a fowl mood.

FIR, but not sure I get the theme. The word rain is split up 3 different ways, i get that, but what has raincoats to do with it?

Seems to me there are too many proper names in this CW, especially for a Monday offering. It depends on how you define “proper name”, but I count eleven. Other than that no nits to pick, a fun eye-opener and week starter, thanx KD. FIR in 15. W/Os DOPE:DOLT, CARAT:KARAT. How many kinds of carets are there? Thanks for the terrific write-up, Boomer, and also thank you and C.C. and D-O for the birthday wish. I can’t believe it: 78!! What happened to 28?? Can it possibly be 50 years. Oy vey. D-O I learned something about solar: Florida Power and Light (or as we call them down here Florida Flicker and Flash) reads the smart meter every month and tells me what I owe them. So they pretty much just say what I owe and I hafta pay-up. I thought my electric bill would be zero, but no. They have a “minimum charge”, a “grid access charge”, and another charge I can’t remember just now, but my bill ends up being about $30/month. Still much better that the $300-350 it would be in the summer months…..but not zero.
D-O, a little more on the solar: I have 27 solar panels and two very expensive Tesla PowerWall batteries. If there is enough sunshine during the day to get the batteries to about 80% charge, they will last all night. They discharge at about 1%/20 minutes, which powers two refrigerator/freezers, one mini-fridge in the guest room, one small wall-banger A.C. unit in the back bedroom next to the pool where I sleep, my outside landscape lighting, and the myriad tiny “On” LEDs on the stuff that stays “On” all the time, like the WIFI, the cable box, my laptop computer, and other stuff. Yesterday was a sunshiny day all day, the batteries got to 100% charge, and now at 7:45am, before the panels get cranking, I still have 46% charge left in the batteries. Also, there is a program built into the system that when a major storm approaches, the system will pull power from the grid to fully charge the batteries in case the grid later goes down. I like that a lot: peace of mind that I will have power, even if the grid goes down. I have experimented and found I can turn off the landscape lights, front porch light, and refrigerators overnight if I need to save power. Turn the fridges back on in the morning, and everything is still cold, so no harm done. It also is amazing how installing the system has made me acutely aware of all power usage. Last: yeah, my Packers lost another one. Three in a row now. 3-4 on the year. Worst year in quite a while.
Took 4:41 to rein in this one. Oh, wait, wrong rein/rain. Maybe I should just eat some RAsIN Bran.

KS's comment helps illustrate why I've come to detest these circle puzzles. Three gimmicky themed answers forced into a puzzle instead of what could be a more enjoyable solving experience (and probably constructing and editing too). I could call circles a "royal pain" and claim they are the "rack and ruin" of crosswords, but that might be a bit much.

Fun and easy Monday - once the RAIN was going to repeat- it sped up the solve a bit. At first didn't know if the first would be RAIN and the second SNOW.....etc.

Hello All! I do the puzzle every day, unfortunately don’t have time to join the blog family as often as I would like.
Puzzles are usually very good with the exception of the proper names. Sorry about that, but most of the proper names are people or places I’ve never heard of. Usually filled in with perps.

I don't have a lot to say about this puzzle, myself. Seemed pretty much like a typical Monday to me, despite the aforementioned "letters that aren't usually found together." FIR, so I'm happy.
Yeah, it was kinda hard to wrap my head around the theme.
(I kept trying to make sense of the letters in the middle...)
It did however remind me of my cheap Chinese Scooter, which if caught in a single drop of rain, will immediately turn into a rust bucket. I have, in desperation, found ways to deal with this issue, but I have yet to find a plastic bag big enough for both me and the scooter...

Unclefred, we've thought about solar, but with my woodlot full of tall trees on the south side of our house, I don't think we'd get enough sunlight to make it worthwhile. Another problem is Centerpoint Energy -- they have to approve the installation before it can be connected to the grid. Applications are taking 6+ months for approval, and they have no incentive to speed things up.

Well, this was a typical Monday, an easy, breezy solve with only Elisa being unknown. Odd spelling and I wonder how it’s pronounced. I would never associate being on pins and needles ((nervous, worried) with agog (excited, keen). The R, Ra, Rai progression in the themers was neat.

I had power problems over the weekend. My 2-month-old free Verizon phone died & wouldn't recharge. I called my local daughter hoping she'd get me a new one. Her 2nd dog is dying so she called my son. He showed up and took the phone to a Verizon store which didn't stock new batteries. Was gone almost two hours. Came back & asked to see my charger. Charger was plugged into a socket behind the headboard of my bed and somehow came unplugged. I wasn't doing anything rambunctious there so don't know how it fell out. Anyway, plugged it in and the phone is now charged and working. Did I feel like a DOLT! But I had a lovely visit with my son and he also hooked up my printer to my laptop after almost 2 years without. So not a total waste.

This is the first puzzle I've done in a few weeks because my laptop computer died a "Blue-Screen Death." I'll have to take it to the Geek Squad or someplace to see if my data can be salvaged. I have a backup external hard-drive, but it hasn't been backed up in a long time. I ordered a new HP laptop from Amazon yesterday and should have it by Wednesday. Today I'm using an old computer that still runs, but it is slow.
I'm doing my civic duty today by filling out my mail-in ballot and will take it to the drop-box at the county courthouse.

I always know when a puzzle is pretty easy when I read the blog and see a bunch of answers that I didn’t see in the puzzle cuz they were entirely filled by perps and today was one of those days. Grasped the theme of RAIN with the first group of circles but I didn’t really understand the “literally” part of the reveal. Anyway, a FIR in a tick under 8 minutes. Thanks Kyle for easing us into the CW week.

Hand up for also being a Packer Backer, things may get a little worse before they get better, heading to Buffalo next Sunday night to face Josh Allen who seems to be at his best in big games. But as Aaron Rodgers exhorted fans a few years ago when they had a similar early season record, “R-E-L-A-X”. It’s a long season which really doesn’t get going till week 9 IMO, teams that don’t improve fall by the wayside.

Thanx to all that have wished me a HBD. D-O, my neighbor's row of fish-tail palms also block part of my solar panels. It makes a really ugly hedge, and I wish he'd take them out and put in a proper hedge, but....oh well. So yeah, you are correct that if trees would block your solar panels it makes little sense. MM, so you've been in Barcelona? I LOVE that city, but am glad I have been there several times. The last time I went, everything you might want to see doing the tourist thing was commercialized, requiring tickets and appointments. While I still enjoyed the two weeks there, it was not as much fun.
I must comment on how INCREDIBLY out-of-date electrical grids around the world are. They are still based on Thomas Edison's 1885 model of central power stations with wires on towers and poles, step-down transformers, etc. This should all today be distributive power generation. If FPL would put solar panels on every rooftop and charge to access and regulate the grid, hurricanes etc would not be near the problem they currently are. Think of if Ukraine had that system: Russia could not be bombing the power-stations and high-voltage towers to beat the Ukrainians into submission, because there wouldn't BE any power-staions or high-voltage towers.

PK, panels are covered with high-impact glass. Also, since they are on the rooftop, they are less likely to get hit with heavy objects. They are very firmly attached to the roof with multiple long screws into the roofing rafters.

David MUIR does a very decent job anchoring ABC News. Although I do yell at him A LOT, I reserve my real criticism for his editors. They often leave out essential parts of their "news" reports, usually by neglecting one or more of journalism's "Five Ws."
And some trivial bits seem to earn a place on the broadcast only because flashy video or "eye-candy" is available.

Keith, if the job is to speak with a tone of voice that treats everything as if it is an urgent crisis, then yes, David MUIR does a good job. Frankly I can’t stand it. Norah O’Donnell does the same thing but adds the affectation of pursing her lips, frowning her face in an expression of deep concern, and nods her head as if to pound the importance of her every syllable into the viewer’s head. It is so phony.

Picard - I have two tarantula stories. Both from White Sands during Basic Bivouac.
1) Doing pushups at dawn, one was gracefully climbing a shrub about 14" from my face. Pretty cool watching it but I was not about to turn and do situps.
2) Buddy runs into Drills' tent in the middle of the night holding one up by two legs:
"Drill, Drill, Drill!!! - This was one my face!!!!"
"Get that *CantSayThisOnTV* thing out of my *can't say this either* TENT!"
