FIRight. It's only Tuesday.
Hardest word -- TSCHUSS. I thought that was Yiddish for prat.
Entertaining theme. After awhile, crocodile!

Alligator (8 species), Group Alligatorida, Family Alligatorida, Order Crocodilia, Class Reptilia
Crocodile (14 species), Group Longirostres, Family Cocodylidae , Order Crocodilia, Class Reptilia
Not only are they different Species, they're different Groups in different Families! A textbook case of convergent evolution!
I presume you are all aware of the Ogden Nash poem about Profssor Twist (conscientious scientist). I'll let someone else repeat it, so that you don't assume it's one of mine.

A SWIZZLE stick, for what it's worth,
Is called a STIRRER, around this Earth.
Comes with a "stirring"
Product Warning:
"Unusable by mice on December Twenty-fourth."

If you're not sure the denominator
Of a crocodile or an ALLIGATOR,
Consider the twist
Of the nickname, this:
If it comes first, it's a Croc-; -Gator comes later!

{A-, A-.}

Hi Y'all! Enjoyable but tricky puzzle & theme, thanks, Nancy. Very Amusing and informative expo, thanks, Hahtoolah!

Last fill was the SM in GAS METER/TSCHUSS/IBM crosses. DNK: TSCHUSS. Didn't remember IBM was Big Blue despite my brother worked for them.

Also DNK: what QR meant or HBO for Gumble. HIDE ME gave me trouble for a while.

But "sign of stress" didn't fool me this time.

I knew European Union was what UK pulled out of, but THE was unexpected.

Only chorus I'd heard on that play list was "Call Me Maybe". I am so not with it. And don't care.

I've been to Bryce, Zion, & Arches National Parks in UTAH. VASTly different sights in all three and very worth visiting.

Hi, this is Subgenius. Like PK, “tschuss” was unknown to me, but the perps made it necessary. Other than that, it was a very doable puzzle. FIR, so I’m happy . (BTW, TTP, I tried getting Chrome from the App Store and using it, but it didn’t help . I’m still “anonymous “ on my phone. But that’s okay, it’s no big deal. Thanks for trying to help, anyway.)

Good morning!

Yay, no reveal to miss. Zipped right through this one, Wite-Out free. Recognized your illustrative style, Hahtoolah. Those facts about LEVI Strauss were riveting. Thought MR. PEANUT was killed of in a 2020 Superb Owl commercial. Enjoyed the puzzle, Nancy, and your tour, Hahtoolah. (Did you really catch a piranha?)

Hahtoolah said...

Good Morning, Crossword friends.

The Tschüss was the only goodbye that threw me, but the perps convinced me that was correct.

Yup, D-O, I really caught a piranha. In fact, I caught 5 that day.

Stay safe from the heat today.

Wow! Quick, easy, fun, great theme, few proper names….I zipped thru this CW and was astonished to find it took me 19 to FIR. Seemed like it went much faster! Only DNK TSCHUSS. And no W/Os. I really, really liked this CW, thanx NSW. Your usual fun and entertaining, always enjoyable write-up, thanx Hahtoolah.

FIR without erasure, but DNK GREGG or, like others, TSCHUSS.

I knew Blazing Saddles' Hedley LAMARR before I knew it was a takeoff on Hedy. Same with learning Bullwinkle's Kirwood Derby before I knew Durward Kirby.

I used to work on UTOPIA road in Phoenix, supporting a big telco switching system that was, well, less than ideal.

A local TV show did a special on refurbishing anchor chains from aircraft carriers. Sounds boring, but it was actually interesting. Each LINK weighs 350 pounds.

I used to tell my aspiring project managers to never start a VAST project with a half-VAST plan.

Why does he go by MR. PEANUT? Because his real name is Bartholomew Richard Fitzgerald-Smythe.

As soon as I post this, I'm applying liquid smoke and PORK RUB INto a PORK shoulder and putting it into a CrockPot. It sits on 6 pads of wadded-up aluminum foil, and will be ready for dinner tonight.

FLN - There's an easy way to add battery backup to your "electric chair". Just get an uninterruptable power supply (UPS) and install it between your chair and the wall. Just make sure that the UPS wattage or amperage rating is at least as much as the chair's. If one is rated in amps and the other in watts, just multiply amps by 100. Close enough for this application.

Thanks for the fun, but challenging, puzzle, Nancy. I loved "unexpected hiccups" for SNAGS. And thanks to Ha2la for the pictorial. (I had a neighbor with a vanity license NACLYK9. Salt - y - dog.)

Hahtoolah another gem and a pair of W's from Owen. Oh here's Ogden

A 'wild' one today with the clues giving away the theme. I aced 20 credit hours of German in college but TSCHUSS was an unknown word filled by perps. GREGG Popovich was the only other unknown filled by perps.

RAM has been a separate brand for over 12 years. It's the US truck made by what was formerly Chrysler, Then FCA (Fiat Chrysler), and now called Stellantis after FCA merged with Peugeot. Stellantis combines Groupe PSA's Peugeot, Citroen, DS Automobiles, Opel and Vauxhall with FCA's Fiat, Chrysler, Dodge, Ram, Jeep, Abarth, Alfa Romeo, Lancia, and Maserati.

Confused? It's still a Dodge. Remember when JEEP was made by the RAMBLER people (AMC)?

This was a fun puzzle which filled quickly - I wasn't fully awake as I filled it - so as I looked back at 24A I wondered what in the heck is a LATERAL LIGATOR?

Thanks Susan for the amusing blog- helped to further wake up! and to Nancy for the puzzle

It took a bit but after awhile crocodile I figured out the second word of each clue was an animal right after PIRANHA... for a FIR...but I wouldn't TSCHUSS "TSCHUSS" if I had to TSCHUSS...🤔

SNAGS, I wanted snafu plural, but what's the plural of SNAFU...SNAFI? (Like Octopi), SNAFUS?, SNAFUES? . "Fugitive's plea" "It was the one-armed man!!"....it's TRUE, you LIEDTO me. "😺mobile"? Why not, there's a 🦇mobile TORI Amos becoming the new Yoko Ono of Crosswords? Was looking for something messier than a TICKET left on the windshield by one of these guys..🐦🦅

VITAL from the Latin VITALIS. Because it's "all-important" your hair ain't ever messed up. I hear MR PEANUT is now required to carry an Epipen when he greets the public. 🧐🥜

Àpopos that (USS) UTAH 🚢 crossed with OAHU's Pearl Harbor.

INANE..I asked myself the same question: LATERAL LIGATOR ? Some kind of surgical suture?

Corned beef sandwich..RUBIN
High school typing manual author.....GREGG
Took the Moms's role by acting ____ ..ASTHMA
Footwear...TSCHUSS

Good Morning:

This was fun right from Mañana Piraña to Adieu Cockatoo, my favorite. What a clever theme to combine farewell expressions with creatures! Other than Tschuss, no unknowns and no w/os. The low three letter word count was a plus, as well.

Thanks, Nancy, for a fun solve and thanks, Hahtoolah, for the many chuckles and links. I heard of only two of those popular choruses; actually, I was surprised that I knew any!

FLN

Picard, you and Merlie must have nerves of steel. There isn’t enough money in the world to get me to stand on that rock. I got queasy just seeing the photo. 🤢

CanadianEh, what you’re referencing is a power lift chair which is used to assist people with health issues into an standing position. What I have is just an ordinary recliner that uses electrical power to raise and lower the chair/foot rest positions.

Terrific Tuesday. Thanks for the fun, Nancy and Hahtoolah. I FIRed in good time and saw the rhyming wild goodbye (in different languages) theme.
One inkblot to change Race to MEET. I waited for TOFU to decide between Olaf and OLAF.

It took a pause to parse 24A. What is a LATERAL LIGATOR? Hello inanehiker and Ray-o.
TSCHUSS reminded me that Spitzboov (RIP) would have explained the German word.

Another great clue for REGATTAS.
And I liked the clue for ACCENT MARK.
I held my nose and filled in METER.

Did anyone else try to fit Bug Splat into “unwelcome windshield item”? I see Ray-o did.
Does somebody really say “ Let’s UM NO never do that” or am I reading the clue incorrectly?

Ah, Irish Miss, thanks for clarifying re power chair.

Wishing you all a great day.

My thank you should have been to Nancy, not Howard. Mea culpa.

Jinx, sounds good. I've never done pulled pork in a crock pot. Definitely going to try that. The advantage I see in doing it your way is harvesting some of the juices to mix in with the store bought bbq sauce. One year, DW and I had a cookoff for a party. I made my pork shoulder in the smoker and she made hers in the overn. Both were very good and there was very little leftover.

No problem with TSCHUSS today. Commonly heard for goodbye in many parts of Germany. Gruss Got in Bavaria. In the standard German (more formal), it would be Auf Wiedersehen as also heard in Hatoolah's first video clip. Did I get that standard part right, Kazie ? The standard high, standard and hoch thing always confused me.

desper-otto said...

TTP, dw's mother was Bavarian, and her traditional good-bye was "Servus!"

Yellowrocks said...

Loved the theme. Got most of the animals before the good-byes. Big Easy, I have a minor in German from college and a German heritage, but Tschuss was new to me. The internet solidly supports it as a common German good-bye. Learning moment. Maybe I am not up on the informal lingo.
Yiddish is TUSH for derrière. My students said, "I hurt my tushie," after falling.
I like living in a multicultural area. It has many interesting advantages. The only drawback is that some service providers can't communicate in English.
I think UM NO is in place of "Let's...never do that." The quotes tell us this is not a fill in the blank.
Susan, thanks for your usual fantastic blog. Thanks, Nancy, for a fun puzzle,

Thanks Nancy for a delightful Tuesday puzzle, and as this appears to be your first appearance here, congrats on your debut.

And thank you Hahtoolah for another mirthful review. That Lab didn't fool me for a second.

Some favs:

14A PORE. I predict that we'll be penetrating far below the skin later in the week.

24A LATER ALLIGATOR. Like Inanehiker I filled this pretty much left to right and couldn't figure out was a LATERAL LIGATOR was.

32A IONS. Aww, atoms in love! 🧡💚

41A TSCHUSS OCTOPUS. Despite 5 years of German, I had no idea what TSCUSS was (turns out it's Plattdeutsch). But perps don't lie.

5D HEDDY. Just as HEDDY was an artiste/scientist, George Antheil, who billed himself has the "Bad boy of classical music", was an artist/scientist. Here's his "Airplane Sonata".

6D UTOPIA. A sociopolitical satire which advocates for "pragmatic idealism" by political influencers (in More's case to King Henry VIII). In the end however it cost him his head.

Cheers,
Bill

I learned gruss gott as both a greeting and goodbye, but apparently that was wrong. I was never comfortable saying it, so if it was someone I knew it was always tschuss, and if it was someone I didn't know well it was always auf wiedersehen.

I don't know how I could not have ever heard servus, and the reality is that I probably have, but just didn't get it. Especially with the numbers of in-laws here.

I found a video that explains it very well What Servus REALLY means | Feli from Germany

Anonymous @ 10:50, the Name/URL option is best thought of as an either/or proposition. Either a link to a webpage, or just a name. So you could select it and type in Joe, or Mary Lou or whatever, and that name will appear in black along with your comments.

Most commenters here choose to "Go Blue". It has nothing to do with the University of Michigan. It simply means that you are creating a Blogger Profile. You can add an image when your create your profile. Here's How to Have a Blogger Account .

And loved hearing the song of the Trapp children right at the very beginning, Hahtoolah--thank you for that too.

Interesting to hear all the German discussion this morning. I grew up in Austria and spoke German until I came to the US on an army boat when I was 10 years old (my widowed mother married an American GI). There I got to play with American children every day for a week and by the time we landed in the States, I spoke English.

Fun to see MOVIE STARS in the puzzle.

Fun theme. But I feel kind of dense. Are any of these actual things someone would say? Other than the well known LATER, ALLIGATOR? That one has a song. Hand up TSCHUSS just looked wrong. Learning moment to FIR.

Here I caught a PIRANHA.

I see I am not the only one!

Hahtoolah Thank you for the Picard CAPTAIN'S LOG! And for the CATMOBILE image. Am I correct that is at Burning Man?

Irish Miss, Wilbur Charles, AnonT Thank you for the comments about DW and me standing on the South RIM of the Grand CANYON. DW is actually quite risk averse. She was pushing her limits then! I am also risk averse about actual dangers. Life is about balancing risks and opportunities, yes?

I've discovered that fried OCTOPUS rings are surprisingly good to eat. They are often an appetizer.

My skinny tropical tree was first a PALO then PALM became obvious. However, I take issue with that as most PALM trees are not skinny but rather have a hefty trunk. Looking out my window I see that they could be described as SKINNY because they are so tall, about 60 feet. On our property we have 66 PALM trees that have to be trimmed every year usually in August.

My home is all electric but most homes south of me have GAS METERS. I know from my sister's former home.

I love OAHU and have great memories of my visits there including one of having a picnic at Diamond Head.

OLAF or OLAV? Wait for perps. In this case, TOFU.

WC - TTP's got it. The balls of aluminum keep the roast out of the juices, supposedly to make it shred better. The juices can be poured over the meat on the serving plate, and I do that before I pour on a little BBQ sauce. To fix the leftovers I reheat the shredded pork, then pour a little roasted salsa verde and serve with refried beans and Spanish rice. I got careless last time and bought pita bread instead of tortillas, and it wasn't a bad experience. Just tore the pita apart and heated in a skillet like tortillas.

We were saying a goodby to a coworker who was leaving IT and going to Sales Support in a different city. One of the wags toasted him, saying that the average IQ in both departments was going to rise. No, it wasn't me. Only because I didn't think of it.

So if you are an iPhone only user, you may go through the steps and find it doesn't work for you.

Subgenius, I'm blushing. Thank you. I try. What do I do ? I'm retired from 45A, so I'll take a few lines from Randy Bachman, as to what I really do now:

"I love to work at nothing all day
And I'll be taking care of business (every day)
Taking care of business (every way)
I've been taking care of business (it's all mine)
Taking care of business and working overtime, work out"

Actually, I'm doing laundry and inside household stuff today, as the temp is pushing 90 and the dew point is in the low 70s. The first of five days slated to be in the 90s. I realize it has been and is much warmer in some parts of the country. Hopefully this unusual weather pattern will break soon.

(We can always tell it's Hahtoolah by the number of well-chosen cartoons!)

I knew TSCHUSS, but was unsure of its spelling. I think it must have originated as onomatopoeia, for the sound made by SKIs as one party leaves the other.

d’o- we still get plenty of bug splats here in the Great White North. Maybe WC is right, and we have more love bugs up here!?

Ray-o- I had to enlarge your emojis! Canada geese droppings would be a mess. A TICKET might be preferable.

YR- thanks for clarifying. I wondered about the dots, but now I think they were just creating a pause between the UM and NO.

WC- LOL re hemorrhoid surgery. Yes TMI re rubber band treatment.

Picard- I’m with your wife in the risk-averse section. She was very brave that day.

Great diagonal OMK!

Welcome Engineer. My DH is one, and we have several more here.

CED, thanks for all the funnies. I never take you for granted.

Picard- re the themers: LATER ALLIGATOR is the closest to a phrase that somebody might actually say. The others are “takeoffs” of “goodbye” (or similar meaning) in the language of the goodbye in the clue, and then a rhyming animal word.
Hope this helps.

Lucina- Adios made it into the CW in the 20A Clue.

Very late to the party today, due to an unusually busy schedule. I did do the puzzle early this morning and got a FIR as confirmed by Hahtoolah so well. So much fun seeing your additions to the puzzle fill explanations. Thanks!

What a nice debut, Nancy! I only knew LATER ALLIGATOR before, but appreciated your paired themers to add to my few. (After while, crocodile, for example.) A pretty grid since I had few WOs. Please comment about the puzzle and come back soon!

Welcome to Engineer, too. This is a great group to read regularly and share comments with. Friendly folk.

We're getting a big rain now with blinking power and flooding streets. I won't get caught in my recliner if the power does go out (Hi, Irish Miss) and I am grateful to be indoors and not driving or walking home at the moment. Be safe everyone!

Lucina, we could have had the well-known "adiós, muchachos" but not all muchachos are animales. Mainly the teenage ones.

I liked this puzzle, Hahtoolah's write-up, and all your comments.
Have never caught a PIRANHA but have caught lots of Crappies, Perch, Bluegills, and Sunfish ("Sunnies").
Started to enter HEAVEN at 6 down then thought I should check at least one perp first; ATEAM and TORI showed me it was UTOPIA, which opened up LULLS.
I positively love jokes about IONS.
Our late daughter-in-law grew up in Munich and spoke fluent Bavarian.
Our house has a GAS METER as well as an electric meter. Both of them can be "read" by the meter-reader guy without him having to get out of his vehicle. I can understand the electric meter being powered by the electricity, but I gotta think the gas meter must have some kind of battery in it to power the transponder. I guess they replace it from time to time.
The word I always start with in Wordle is ROAST.
BRIBES didn't fit in the PORK space.
Good wishes to you all.

Hi All!

Neat-O theme, Nancy. Thanks for the grid and congrats on the LAT debut.

Fantastic-O expo, Hahtoolah. LOL "I don't even own a bicycle."

WO: I put LAIR in LEVI's squares.
ESPs: TSCHUSS, GREGG
Fav: Hedy LAMARR graces a coaster on my desk.

Cute DR, OMK

FLN - found the pic of AARON Judge fans.

Welcome Engineer. I assume by your moniker you are/were one - what type?

Jinx - The Hedy | Hedley gag in Blazing Saddles [Brooks] is a wonderful homage. And that goodbye to the office-mate is LOL.

C, Eh! - 'UM, NO' == 'Let's not' == 'Let's never'

CED - I know that when it comes to food, guitars, & flight simulators, there's no jokin.' Thanks for the Fish.

HG - for the ANTS down here, we use Amdro. //I have not seen ants in the house since living in IL

Gotta run. Cheers, -T

Thank You Nancy Serrano-Wu for a very nice, and fairly easy Tuesday puzzle. I throughly enjoyed it. Tschuss was my only concern, but I thought it would be right .... I googled the word, after all the discussion, as above ... it is pronounced. 'Choos' ... which in Hindi/Urdu would mean, to suck something, like a drink.

Thank You Hatoolah for your cartoons and charming review ... your jokes were very apt and funny, and it was nice to see you and the piranha that you caught. I don't fish ... it takes too long ... but I do have a stuffed piranha which I 'caught' ... in a garage sale.

It was a Hatoolah QOD 'bargain' .... " An item you did not want, and do not need, but it was at a price you couldn't resist" .... It graces our mantelpiece, and is supposed to scare our grandkids...

Thank you CED for all your cartoons and funnies everyday , and thank you Ray O Sunshine for your Deft Daffinitions ( ... from the erstwhile Readers Digest, of long ago ....)

e.g. Alimony is ... Disinterest compounded monthly ...

Thank you Picard for all your photos of you and DW, doing various antics, on the rim of the canyons ( ha! ) and your unicycle mastery.

NaCl forms a very strong bond, but thank god, it breaks up into elelcrolytic ions in our body and supplies our cells all around. If you try to break a bond of NaCl in a water solution, through electrolysis, you are more likely to break up the solvent, water, itself into Oxygen and Hydrogen. The NaCl has to be melted or fused for the production of Sodium and Chlorine.

Thomas Moore coined the word, Utopia, ... intended as "a place that does not exist."... and it continues to be a mythical place, even in todays meanings.

Have a good evening, you all.

FLN - Luncina mentioned watching Billy Crystal on Colbert. I assume you, Lucina, also saw the (just now on YouTube) geo-political ice-cream kerfuffle with Canada.
C, Eh! - We demand to know where you stand on this travesty!! :-)

I'm only linking this 'cuz it's late. Cracker's MOVIE STAR(s) has been in my head since the morning's solve.

The lyrics:
Well the MOVIE STAR, well she crashed her car.
But everyone said she was beautiful even without her head.
Everyone said she was dangerous.
Well the chief of police kept the crime off the streets.
But deep in his heart, we all knew he felt differently.
We all knew he was an anarchist.
Well I'd
I'd like to devour you
But you
You'd probably
Devour me.
For your golden head, for your oat bran hair.
Deep in my heart
Girl you're a beautiful animal
I'll put a tag on your ear.

I giggle every time the last line hits.

Cheers, -T

Yes, I watched the entire dialog with Billy Crystal, cuz I luv him, and also the kerfluffle about the ice cream. Normally I only watch the monologue.

The book I am currently reading is VIOLETA by Isabel Allende and is a bit of a departure from her normal style.

My doctor is upset with me because my blood numbers are too high. Sigh! I have been cheating with sugary foods. My argument is that I am far along in my life that I likely don't have too more years left and I'd like to enjoy them with a bit of ice cream now and them. At my great-grandson's party Sunday, I over indulged on birthday cake and ice cream.
