Friday, November 18, 2022, David Alfred Bywaters

Good morning, cruciverbalists.  Malodorous Manatee here and, no, you have not misplaced almost an entire week.  I have now returned from my overseas sojourn.  I have also been reassigned to the Friday beat.  I guess that now makes me Joe Friday.  I will try to live up to his, my predecessor's and my contemporary's standards.

In today's puzzle, frequent contributor David Alfred Bywaters insists that U to get out of here.  You can stay but U must go.  At four places within the grid he repeats a word but, for the second occurrence, drops the letter U from the first iteration and thereby provides a witty definition of the clue.  To wit:

17 Across:  Grammarian?: USAGE SAGE.  Hmmm, will the theme be repeating words?  Ummm, no, not exactly.

29 Across: Aspen, in the Rockies?: POPULAR POPLAR.  At first I thought that the clue had something to do with the ski resort but it turned out to be tree-related.

43 Across:  Nodding, e.g.?: AUCTION ACTION.  At first I thought the clue had something to do with sleeping or the granting of consent.  One is able to bid at an AUCTION by nodding.

59 Across:  One inept at data storage?: CLOUD CLOD.

It would have been amusing if David had managed to somehow work YEW, HEW, HUGH or EWE into the grid.

With that, youse guys and gals, it's now time to make a U-turn and head back to the top of the puzzle:

Across:

1. Time-travel destination. PAST.  FUTURE would not fit.  PRESENT neither fit nor made any sense.

5. Short notice?: MEMO.  Shortened version of MEMOrandum.

9. BĂ©la Fleck's instrument: BANJO.  Bela is a true virtuoso.  He plays everything from Bluegrass to Jazz and Mozart on the 5-string banjo.  The bass player in his band is Victor Wooten who is one of the greats.  This tune ranks among my favorites:

14. One in a four-part harmony: ALTO.  BASS would have fit but it would not work with the perps.

15. Button alternative: SNAP.  Oh, it's not a peyote button.  I guess we have closure.

16. "Night Sky With Exit Wounds" poet Vuong: OCEAN.  A learning moment for this solver.

19. "I'll do it!": LET ME.

20. Steadfast: LOYAL.

21. Coined: MINTED.

23. Paean in verse: ODE.  I've written a poem about the sounds made by dogs but you can only read it if you scan it first.  It's a bark ODE.

25. Broadcast: AIR.  Both the  clue and answer are used here as verbs.

26. Global clock std.: GMT.  Greenwich Mean Time

33. Steeped in a salt solution: BRINED.  It is almost time to BRINE the Thanksgiving turkey.

35. Apartment ad abbr.: RMS.  RooMS   A little bit better than MSS at 5 Down.

36. Fishing gadget: LURE.

37. Rich soil: LOESS.  Hand up for initially thinking of LOAM but there wasn't enough of it to fill the space.

38. Not neg.: POS.  POSitive.  Post Offices?

39. Warm up some leftovers, say: EAT IN.

40. Fantasy heavy: OGRE.  Shrek and Fiona have significantly altered the OGRE landscape.

Not Shrek

41. Lip: RIM.

42. Make more capacious: EXTEND

46. Workout top: TEE.

47. Managed: RAN.  As in:

48. Granola morsel: OAT.

49. Maritime crime: PIRACY.

51. Apollo 11 lander: EAGLE.

56. Geographer's volume: ATLAS.

61. __ Corps: PEACE.  Formed in 1961 to "promote world PEACE and friendship by providing trained volunteers to countries who need them."

62. Quite a few: LOTS.  TONS.  GOBS.  MANY.  A LOT.

63. Word with deck or dock: HAND.

64. Mortgage payment component, often: TAXES.

65. Focus group?: EYES.  Not a marketing research panel but, literally, what you focus with.

66. Tense: EDGY.  ANTSY was too long.

Down:

1. Ant-Man player Rudd: PAUL.

2. Too: ALSO.  Additionally, there are more synonyms for too as well.

3. Parting word to a dog: STAY.

4. Word chanted in "Animal House": TOGA.

5. Pile on an ed.'s desk: MSS.  We have seen this (somewhat of a punt) fill before.  ManuScriptS

6. CloisonnĂ© medium: ENAMEL.

7. Nativity scene trio: MAGI.

8. Warm welcome: OPEN ARMS.

9. Short jacket: BOLERO.  We will save the Ravel for another day.

10. Got a great grade on: ACED.

11. Safety feature at a trapeze school: NET.

12. Toast topping: JAM.

13. See 34-Down: ONE.  and . . .
34. With 13-Down, 2016 film subtitled "A Star Wars Story": ROGUE.

18. Weds without ceremony: ELOPES.

22. Warns, with "off": TIPS.

24. Disappointment: DUD.

26. Wheat protein: GLUTEN.

27. Bay Area county: MARIN.

28. Fashionista's concern: TREND.   Now, where did I put my Davy Crockett hat?  Maybe it's with my Members Only jacket and parachute pants.  Not.

29. Give a ring?: PIERCE.  Neither a marriage nor a telephone reference.

30. Start:
ONSET.

31. Diffuser emanation: AROMA.

32. Student of Socrates: PLATO.

33. Balloon: BLOAT.  Mick Jagger goes to the doctor and tells his physician that he is always very gassy but cannot fart.  In other words, he can't get no flatus action.

38. Zenith: PINNACLE.

39. Went out: EXITED.

41. Imitate a lion: ROAR.  Under the right conditions, the roar can be heard up to five miles away.

42. "Getting here soon?": ETA.  "What is your Estimated Time of Arrival?"

44. Droopy perennials: IRISES.  Famously painted by Vincent Van Gogh.

45. Native American trickster: COYOTE.  Homer Simpson sends up Carlos Castaneda with the help of Johnny Cash:

49. Tempo: PACE.  Sometimes (this time) the answer is a synonym (e.g. CLIP or RATE) sometimes it is an example (e.g. TROT or LOPE).

50. Be overly sweet: CLOY.

52. Need a massage, perhaps: ACHE.

53. Hefty rival: GLAD.    Both are brands of plastic bags.

54. Yearn: LONG.  ACHE, PINE and ITCH were potential candidates.

55. Current event?: EDDY.  Nice pun.  Not, in this instance, a recent occurrence.  An EDDY is a circular movement in fluid or gas.

56. Fitting: APT.

57. Dim sum beverage: TEA.  Both are of Chinese origin.

58. Insufficiently firm: LAX.  Also an airport in SoCal...where the security is anything but.

60. Naval letters: USS.  United States Ship.

Well, folks, we’re living in a topsy-turvy world. Tuesday’s puzzle was the hardest one of the week. Since then, each day, the puzzle has gotten easier and easier (not that I’m complaining.) For one thing, from the first themed solve, the gimmick was obvious. For another thing, there were no obscure WNBA players and, in fact, few obscure proper names or other terms overall. So, in sum, FIR, so I’m happy.

UNKs: OCEAN,PAUL Rudd,ENAMEL,BOLERO as clued,I knew MARIN County (Natick is in Norfolk County)

Inkovers: ????/SNAP, fLOATED(BRINED waited for perps)

Enjoyed the theme and a few clues were fun(focus group/ EYES,Give a ring/ Celtic legendPIERCE

Hello everyone!
Hope ur all doing well. Enjoyed this puzzle very much, and the great write-up by MM. Thank you very much.
Marin County is one of my favorite places. Family there, just so beautiful to drive across the Golden Gate to this beautiful place. The Larkspur Ferry into SF is lovely to us as tourists, maybe not so much if you’re a commuter. Sausalito, Corte Madera, and then Sonoma and Napa not far away. Muir Woods, etc.
Have a great day everyone

I agree w/ SG that Tuesday was the toughest day this week. I very much enjoyed this CW for the fun theme, the lack of obscure names, and the clever clues. Managed to FIR in 24, slow compared to most who post here but pretty good for unclefred on a Friday. Thanx DAB for the fun. And thanx too to MM for the marvelous write-up. Enjoyed the music link, and the Mick Jagger joke, among other nice features of your write-up.

Good morning!

Wasn't familiar with the Star Wars sequel, and that made ROGUE and BLOAT slow to appear. But, appear they did. Whew. Thanx, D.A.B. and Mal-Man. (Flatus action, indeed.)

Good morning. Thank you, David, and thank you, Malodorous Manatee.

Your real name is Joe Friday ? Do you work here ? Do you carry a badge ? You know, the one that starts the opening of Dragnet with a dialogue like this ?:

"This is the city. Los Angeles, California. It's a nice place to live. Even when it rains. Over three million people live here. Most of them are honest and work hard to earn a living. Some of them get lucky and hit it big. When someone starts earning big money, he very often becomes a target by those that try to help themselves to his profit, by means of extortion. When that happens, we talk it over down here, at the police administration building, Parker Center. I work here. I carry a badge. My partner is Bill Gannon. My name is Friday."

David, where did U go ? And MM, who is that guy leaving the building in the EXIT drawing at 39D ?

Yes, we're doing a BRINED bird this year. Defrosting has begun.

desper-otto said...

TTP, that sounds like a bird brined idea.

Jinx in Norfolk said...

FIR, but erased led for RAN, tons for LOTS and taste for TREND. DNK Bela, cloisonne, OCEAN, LOESS, PAUL, that Star Wars flick, and only knew BOLERO from Bo Derek in 10.

When I got the theme, I thought "not again"! Haven't I been told "I don't need U anymore" enough already?

Thanks to DAB for another tight, fun puzzle. And welcome back to our Malman. Hope you get settled in at the Corner's Friday desk quickly. And I'm so glad you got "bark ODE" out of your system. Must have felt great once you passed it.

Good Morning:

Lots of early bird posters this morning. Do you guys all suffer from insomnia? This was an okay solve but neither the theme nor the cluing and fill were Friday level, IMO. Jeffrey Wechsler, where are you? My only w/o was Obit before Memo and the only unknowns were Ocean, as clued, and Rogue One. Marin County reminded me of Steve. As Subgenius pointed out, the theme was obvious immediately, much to my chagrin.

Thanks, David, and thanks, MalMan, for the chuckles and commentary. Any interesting or exciting travel tidbits that you’d like to share? Welcome back!

Have a great day.

MM, if you're Joe Friday 'the facts please, just the facts' . When I saw DAB's name I knew it would be a good puzzle without unnecessary proper names. And then I hit 1D and it was an unknown one, Thank you PAST, ALTO, and LOYAL for allowing PAUL to join the grid. OCEAN only made it because the Nissan ROGUE had a massive ad campaign tied in with ONE ROGUE. Easy solve today.

The added "U"- caught it at USAGE SAGE.

BANJO playing Mozart? One of my pickleball friends, Terry Rappold, has won international whistling championships. He performs Vivaldi concertos. At one of our parties he "guest whistled" with the rock band for a few songs. Check him out on YouTube.

He's talented and "I ain't just Whistlin' Dixie".

Took me 9:41 today to finish this pzzle.

Nice puzzle, although Ms. Irish Miss is right: not up to usual Friday standards.

Sure seemed like a long way to go for Patti to clue "ocean" as some poet.

I think it's accurate to say that "Rogue One" is a Star Wars prequel from the original Star Wars ("A New Hope" episode 4, and subsequent films), but a sequel to the three Star Wars prequels (episodes 1-3).

Nice job, Unclefred. You'll break 20 minutes on a Friday soon.

TTP said...

Irish Miss, if we had a Jeffrey Weschler puzzle, it might show up on a Monday or Tuesday. :-)

I think Patti is intent on following her own set of rules, and not just following suit because "that's the way it was done in the past."

waseeley said...

Thank you DAB for a delightfl Friday pzzle. I immediately saw something fnny about it, as it wasn't loaded down with P&P and was written as if yo actually wanted s to solve it!

And thank you Joseph Friday. It's great to have you back. As I'm more of a tree person than a ski person I had no problem seeing the POPLAR POPLAR at 29A.

Got all the fill, got the theme and I'm OTTA here - we taking the two yongest boys to see the Archer fishes at the National Aquarim in downtown BMORE.

Cheers,
Bill

I posted one of his pzzles yesterday - "260-Doble-Dties". Jst go to his website and scroll to the bottom. It's available online, in .pz format (you need AcrossLite), or in PDF format. FYI it's a 21 x 21 with 65 clues and ONE PROPER NAME (and that for a famous Russian novelist). Enjoy

A fantastic Friday puzzle! I thank DAB (always glad to see your name) and MalMan (looking forward to seeing you regularly on Fridays) for an easy start to the day with a FIR and no WOs. It's never happened before for me. I agree it is an unusually easy puzzle for Friday. Maybe a holiday treat?

Same unknowns as D-Otto, Jinx, and Irish Miss: OCEAN and ROGUE ONE, but perps were fair enough. I needed your explanation for PIERCE, MalMan, as I couldn't think beyond marriage or phone. The banjo piece accompanied the rest of the blog and comments for me. Nice!

The theme was obvious by the second one. I'm not complaining. As waseeley showed us so humorously, we can get along without U. Friday seems to bring out the jokes today. (I'm looking at you two too, D-Otto and MalMan)

TGIF for a fast start to the weekend. Enjoy, everyone!

Interesting theme: remove the letter U and u have an echo. Musta been difficult to set up and repeat I would think. Impressive. But made for the easiest Friday in a while. Two SNAPs up 🤌🤌.

Paul Rudd one of my favorite foreign actors (he's Canadian) . "Current event "?: EDDY (which Edward, Edgar, Edmond, who?)......ohhhhh... "Focus group"? EYES?, another "ohhhh".. now I see 🤓

"Lip": sass wrong, too long. OCEAN Vuong (rhymes with wrong and long) is only 34, just LIUed. "Pile on an ed.'s desk" ?: MSS (abbrev for mess or messages?) I don't remember "manuscripts" before. "give a ring" for PIERCED?

Spiced one's tea....MINTED
the results of a Bris...TIPSOFF 🤭
Mild mannered Clark's sweetie....LOESS
Care for a divorced spouse...EXTEND
What goats actually don't do...EATIN
Physician Assistant: dock ____ ..HAND

We return to the tundra today...At least it not snowing at Albany airport.

Good to hear about Owen. Any news about Vid?

Fun puzzle a little faster than usual Friday, which is good as I'm in Colorado babysitting my granddaughter - with snow and 9 degree temps - they had a 2 hour delay for school - so DIL who is a high school teacher has a more leisurely morning and so do I!

I enjoyed ROGUE ONE in the Star Wars series - Felicity Jones is a wonderful actress who was also Stephen Hawking's wife in "The Theory of Everything" and RBG in "On the Basis of Sex"

Ray- O - you are getting Paul Rudd mixed up with Ryan Reynolds who is Canadian. Paul was born in NJ but spent most of his growing up in Kansas City. I like both of them as actors.

Thanks MM for the fun write-up and David for the puzzle!

I binged the first 3 episodes of the 3rd and final season of the dark comedy "Dead to me" last" last night starring Christina Applegate (Emmy nod) just now available on Netflix. The first 2 seasons were pre covid. She has since developed multiple sclerosis and I understand has struggled to finish the series. In most scenes she is seated. Steroid effects are obvious. A brave lady.

I agree with everyone, not Friday fare, but not complaining. The theme, though easy, was fun.

We have good friends who lived in Berkeley for many years and finally got tired of the foggy mornings so moved to San Rafael, Marin county. It is quite lovely there. Loved to visit them.

PEACE, everyone. Soon we’ll have to think about TAXES. Not a POPULAR ACTION.

Lucina said...

Hola!

Thank you, DAB and MM for entertaining us today. I actually solved this very early this morning which exhausted me so I went back to bed. I'm kidding about the exhausting part. It was fun to repeat the word almost like an echo but not quite.

I believe there is more than one USAGE SAGE on this site.

OCEAN as clued is unfamiliar to me. But MARIN County is my summer stomping ground, for one or two weeks anyway. I take the MARIN County bus from the airport. It is a gorgeous area and I never tire of it. I also enjoy the one hour ride across the Golden Gate bridge and through lovely lush country.

My turkey will not be BRINED but baked in a plastic bag where it will retain all the juices. I can't wait for the AROMA to overtake my kitchen.

Some neighbors have reported seeing a COYOTE or two in the area.

Have a delightful day, everyone!

LET ME EXTEND a thank U to DAB and MM for a fun solve and a funny write up! I enjoyed the Bela Fleck music.

Hi All!

Whoot! A Friday with only one WO and that's only 'cuz I can't spell MAjI [sic].

Thanks David for the cute 'drop a letter for new word dupe' puzzle. Cluing with a ? was extra entertainment.
D'Oh! The letter consistently dropped is a U!?! (Soorry, C, Eh! I know how you Canadians love an extra U, U know?)
Tight theme D.A.B - well done fun.

Fantastic expo, MManatee. You pointed out it's always a U dropped. Cute kitty a ROAR and LOL Simpsons' clip. Travel pix?
Anyway, I look forward to more of my Friday Overlord.

WO: MAjI
ESPs: OCEAN (? I mean if your name is Billy, that's a good LastName - TTP beat me to it :-( )
Fav: BRINED. Alton Brown showed me that's the best way to build the bird.
//First time I built Thanksgiving, FIL got kicked under the table for saying, "This is the juiciest turkey I've ever had."

There's other sparkle in the grid that could be a Fav but I've got Turkey on the mind...
Lucina - you really should try BRINing the bird. All the spices you use in the mix get into the muscles. Fabulous.

MARIN County - I'll be there Tuesday (late) to visit DW's Aunt near SFO (Tiberon) for Thanksgiving.

Moving further down state, to LA, and to jump on TTP's @5:53a post... Another Dragnet Intro. [@1:03]
//DW hates that I love watching Dragnet :-)

BigE - Thanks for the link to Terry Rappold - you can see him reaching and nailing.

PAUL Rudd is funny. And! he's a RUSH fan [Funny or Die]
I oft confuse him with Ryan Reynolds (who's also very funny) but that's another story... //wait, Ray-O confuses 'em too? Must be us Italians can't see white :-)

That's all I got for now... We're doing a cut-over at 4p so I gotta get my Friday nap in early.

Cheers, -T

Puzzling thoughts:

I actually solved this several days ago (we bloggers get the puzzles a week ahead of time), and thought I was pulling up Thursday's grid. I, too, thought it quite easy for a Friday, but our Friday puzzles have been getting easier to solve the past few months. Maybe Patti is taking it easy on Joe Friday and me ...

MM; excellent recap. David "one if by land, two if by sea, and three if" Bywaters, gave us a most enjoyable and tight grid. MSS was my lone beef, and I'm pretty sure that our editor had something to do with the clues

I missed the Owen update; is he ok?

My update: the three-year streak of being totally healthy ended this week; my home testing kit confirms I have COVID. Well, at long last I now know how it feels ...

Tony, thanks. I've had all but the omicron booster, so "my bad". So far the symptoms are runny nose, dry cough, and sneezing. No fever or chills...yet

Ray-O: Margaret and I watched the Weird Al movie and I agree with all you said. I think I wore out my "fact checks" as I googled a lot whilst watching ...

BTW, if you can go back and edit your last post ... you left the italics open ...

If yer not a Weird Al Yankovic fan...stop reading..go on to the next comment.

Recently streamed the movie. "Weird: The Al Yankovic Story". Harry Potter did an excellent job even if he's too short. I expected a humorous but str8forward biopic peppered with his parodies. Instead a zany send up of his life with nonsense lampoon thrown in. I was constantly stopping the movie and googling to find out if what I just saw was actually true. Spoiler, Madonna actually did suggest the "Like a Surgeon" parody..Did Al have an affair with the Material Girl?..see..the movie.

Fun Friday puzzle with a neat theme, many thanks, David. And MalMan, your commentaries are always a pleasure, thanks for this one too.

As soon as I saw BANJO followed by ALTO, I knew we probably had not only a music theme but an overall art theme, maybe with a poet writing an ODE before having some OATS for breakfast. And sure enough, there was a sound in the AIR and and I could already picture an artist with sharp EYES and HANDs, getting ready to produce some POPULAR art that could be MINTED and sold at AUCTION and maybe make LOTS of money.

Well, if that turns out to be true, those artists will say "LET ME buy a BOLERO to wear, while listening to a BOLERO, and maybe with a TOGA to go with that, and a jacket with OPEN ARMS."
Sound like everybody in this puzzle will have a good time.

I wish you all some PEACE this weekend.

It did get a little UHF at the end but, overall, intertextually funny.

For the real story (NOT!), listen to his interview on Terry Gross' Fresh Air.

I love Weird Al but not as much as a buddy of mine... He's met him backstage 8x and introduced his kids! Al is a really nice guy my buddy says.

Nice to know there's other Weird Al fans, C. Moe & Ray-O, at The Corner.

Oops, wrote this after I finished the CW this a.m., but got distracted before I posted. BLTN. Thanks M. Manatee for a fun review, and David Alfred Bywaters for this CW. I enjoyed it.
Saw the theme w/ the 1st & 2nd which helped me w/ the 3rd & 4th. Mid-West (is that what you call it??) was the last to fill. LOESS (a) and PIERCE (d) eluded me. I wasn't thinking nose jewelry -who would??
I immediately put in BRINED because just this morning I brined the turkey legs. (I'm bringing the gravy and need the broth.). And I randomly picked up a People Magazine while checking out at the grocery, and who was in it? Paul Rudd. I love synchronicity!!

My warm welcome was an OPEN door. Not as warm as ARMS. No OPEN doors here tonight as we wait to see how much snow is blown in our direction. Fort Erie and Buffalo are getting the brunt of the lake-effect snow . . . so far!

PK- I LOLed at your Little DAB will do U.
CMoe- take care an$ feel better soon

Wishing you all a good evening.

I just watched the very suave Cary Grant in The Bishop's Wife. Woo-hoo! What a guy! He could charm the pants, jacket, tie and everything else off of any poor soul who didn't know what hit him or her. Interestingly he plays the harp in one of the scenes as his role in the movie is an angel. I had not seen that version only the more modern one. Loretta Young plays the female role and David Niven, her husband, the bishop.

Pk, I thought of you and wondered if you saw it tonight though I have no doubt you have seen it on other occasions.
