Hello all!

Nice puzzle, Peter; swell write-up, Argyle.

Not a speed run. Enjoyed the references to July 4, etc. Was familiar with dates of death of the 2 presidents. My grandfather was born on July 4. So have collected trivia relating to this day unwittingly on the old hard drive!

Hope everyone has a nice holiday!

Barry G. said...

Morning, all!

I was hoping to get a 4th of July theme today and was not disappointed. I didn't know WALSH and got a little bogged down by all the cross-references, but overall a pretty easy puzzle.

Gotta go start getting ready for today's BBQ (weather permitting, of course). Have a great one!

Lemonade714 said...

Happy Fourth,

Well we begin with a really nicely put together 4th themed puzzle. Not only did Adams and Jefferson die the same day, but Adams last words were, "Thomas Jefferson still survives." Sadly, this was not correct as Jefferson died earlier in the day, but they had bad cell service back in those days. It also was the 50th anniversary of the signing of the declaration.

It was as much of a speed run as I get these days, with me feeling so dense but I did not remember ODENSE, but the rest went quickly.

Have a great day and be careful around fireworks everyone.

Splynter said...

Hi There ~!

Like BarryG, I was looking forward to a theme for the Fourth, and this one was spectacular - I like to see theme answers cross like that, even if it means a variation in the puzzle's symmetry.

And for all it's complexity, there was really no fill that made me cringe - unknowns were ED AMES (but I remember that clip, Argyle) and ODENSE, and does anyone think STONE MASON was a 'hint' at something else, too?

I am an ICONOCLAST

BBQ here, too, if the same East coast weather holds out - but I will watch other people's money go 'up in smoke'....

Good Morning, Argyle and Friends. Like Barry G, I was hoping of a special Fourth of July theme. Theme-wise, it was pretty easy, but nice to celebrate the county's birthday.

Did you know that a third American president also died on the Fourth of July, albeit a different year? James Monroe (b. 1758) died on the Fourth of July in 1831.

I wasn't fooled by the ADA. We have seen that clued like that before.

OTTO Preminger's movies was Exodus, which also makes frequent crossword appearances.

I initially wanted Lenox instead of SPODE for fine china.

What Can't be Parted After Its Departed = HAIR was the best clue we've seen in a long time.

SALT = Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty.

Happy 4th C.C,, Argyle and all,

Good theme with the famous names and uncanny death dates connected to the 4th.

30D was unknown to me. What does it stand for?

Have a nice day everyone.

thehondohurricane said...

Good day folks & Happy Fourth of July,

This was as easy a puzzle as I've attempted in some time. Completed by filling in the across clues, never having to rely on a down. That was good because some of the Downs that would have been a problem. 13D, 28D, 33D & 50D were the culprits.

Never even noticed 28D, Hair, until Hahtool mentioned it. It is a "kick."

Jefferson & Adams were complete opposites of each other in their private lives, bitter rivals for a time, but, as I recall, of the same mind when writing the Declaration. And the friendship was renewed before their passing.

Hope today's puzzle success is a sign the week will be a good one.

Creature, I believe Dojo is a martial arts school.

Good morning everyone. Happy Fourth of July. Happy 13th Anniversary to my son & his wife.

I woke up couldn't get back to sleep at 2:00 a.m. so I worked the puzzle then. ADA did fool me even though one of sons is a Dentist. I loved the Independence Day clues.

Happy 4th America and fellow puzzlers! Our town had wonderful fireworks last night but we had to use a blanket as it was a little chilly.

Mr. Collins here is your assignment – make a 4th of July themed puzzle with a Monday feel and some fun cluing, cross references and a couple of obscure/gettable words. Mission Accomplished!!

Musings
-Liza urge her ASCOT horse to “move your bloomin’ arse”
-I try to restrain my iconoclastic tendencies
-The LEM on Apollo 13 supported 3 men for 4 days when it was designed for 2 men for 2 days
-Iconoclast Houdini upset Conan Doyle’s belief in spiritualism
-STAN not FRAN
-Annie’s Sandy had a famous “Arf!”
-Tarzan movie on TMC last week made me wonder where Jane got her makeup and hair done in the Jungle (now rain forest)
-Anna hasn’t won a big tennis tournament and Danica hasn’t won a big race, but they manage!
-I loved the Ed Ames/Johnny Carson clip but also remember Ed singing this wonderful song

Avg Joe said...

Very easy, but enjoyable puzzle. As has been noted, no real clunkers, but no real hangups either.

My grandfather on my dads side was also born on July 4, in 1876.

I remember that Ed Ames clip from the best of Carson shows as well, Argyle. Ed played it for all it was worth, but it was also Johnny at his best. Just letting the humor sink in for a while. :-) But I do have one issue. Now the Hamms Beer commercial is my earworm. To exorcize that here's a nice tune by Ed Ames

Husker Gary said...

p.s Any guesses on the year for my new avatar as I get into this vintage pix?

HeartRx said...

Good Morning Argyle, C.C. et al.

Thanks for the ED AMES clip, Argyle - that is one of my all time favorite Carson bits, too!

This wasn't exactly a speed run today, but I can't really say it was because of any obscure clues or answers. Matter of fact, there was plenty to like in this one and I got a real chuckle out of the HAIR clue.

I filled in 5D and 9D early on, so that gave lots of perps sprinkled throughout. But like Barry, cross-references always slow me down.

I had to stop and think about the JEFFERSON and ADAMS clues because the way I first read them, I thought that they had died of THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE. Weird, but I had to read each clue three times before I got them. D'OH!!

Anyway, have a happy Fourth, everyone!

HeartRx said...

Husker, my guess would be 1963.

Thanks,Hondo and Yellowrocks, for the DOJO info. First I've seen of it.

Welcome, Yellowrocks. Go blue.

Argyle, your write-up was great. I love the Carson clip; One of my favorites, too.Thanks.

Avg Joe said...

HG, I'd also guess 1963. Possibly '62. I'm not sure exactly when mine is, but one of those two years as well.

kazie said...

Not much to dislike today. At first I groaned when I saw all the interconnections between clues, but light dawned quickly and all was well again. Nice job, Peter!

Argyle, brilliant as usual. I loved seeing Johnny again and I recognized Ed Ames, though the name meant absolutely nothing to me before that.

Welcome, Yellowrocks,
You should go blue, so none of the nasty anons can steal your I.D. What kind of yellow rocks? Topaz, or gold nuggets?

kazie said...

Fermatprime,
Was that a uniform of some kind?

I'm certainly enjoying all these new/old photos. Doesn't it seem as if we show our real selves more with them than with the more recent ones? I like to think so anyway. Although, with most people, personalities mellow and mature, becoming better, while our bodies fade into less capable versions of themselves.

Yellowrocks said...

I hate to admit it, but I don't know how to go blue.
Yellowrocks is code for my favorite activity. I will clue y'all in sometime soon. I was hoping someone, even an an anon would recognize the code.

Hello Puzzlers - Happy Independence Day!

Argyle, thanks for the write-up, and for Anna in particular! The Ed Ames clip has to be the funniest moment in vintage TV.

Zoomed right through this well crafted puzzle. Loved the theme, of course, and I'm still amazed Peter could fit everything in.

Need exercise today, the last two days have been eat, eat, eat. Don't ya love American holidays?

Good Morning and a happy 4th to all. Thanks for the write up, Argyle.

We hopped a plane to Ohio last night and will spend a couple of days with kids and grandkids. I had to do the puzzle in AcrossLite to get my daily dose of brain teasing. No problems encountered and a very appropriate theme for the day.

HuskerGary, I'd say 1964 since it looks like it might be your senior high picture and you're about five years younger than me.

Kazie--Thanks for noticing. I believe it was a glee club uniform, but it's hard to remember. Most of my old pictures were destroyed by an evil woman who stayed with me for a few years, so I can't cross reference. I was 15, I think.

Good morning Argyle, C.C. and a happy 4th to all,

It's watermelon weather here.Am looking forward to tonight's ribs.

A fun puzzle..was hoping for an Americana theme, a good time to pick up new facts. Thanks Argyle.

I thought this was a little harder for a Monday. I was without an E at Odence/edames.Naifs, dojo and spelling of phen came with perps. Cross references have me baffled 80% of the time, but I got them today...even all of the dreaded abbreviations.

I agree, BEST clue was for hair.
Also, loved seeing Bill Walsh. What a great mentor he was to many future coaches.

Welcome Yellowrocks! I bet you are the anon who has been giving us lots of good information.

Hi all - hope you all enjoy the holiday!

Great write-up Argyle. Thanks for the explanation for some pesky stumpers: DOJO, NAIF, A.D.A.(yes, it fooled me) and OST (yikes, I never would have gotten that!)
I got 48D only with the perps, I have no idea who that was...and I watched the old TV program too.

Hahtool, I agree with you about the clever clue/answer for 28D.

Husker Gary, I'd say about the same vintage as mine...I'll give you about 4 years though ;)

Husker Gary said...

Marti, me too! I wondered how they died OF the Declaration.

The picture is my Class of '64 (not 1864) “portrait”. When I went to college in the autumn of that year, the school I chose had twice the usual enrollment of the early sixties as many guys were trying to duck the draft and get a 2-S deferment.

Happy Fourth of July, everybody. As kazie with the winsome, come-hither eyes said, "I'm certainly enjoying all these new/old photos." It's fun.

Extremely well-constructed and fun puzzle today. Enjoyed it a lot. Knew Bill WALSH, even though I usually know very little about sports or sports figures. Didn't know ODENSE either. And yep, Husker Gary, I too wanted FRAN at first, not STAN.

Love love love that Ed Ames, clip! Oh boy, glad you got a chance to post it, Argyle.

The clue for HAIR is memorable.

The first half of the 1960's were awesome years!

Hola Everyone, Happy 4th to all.

A fun, Independence Day puzzle. The long fills were the easiest. I had a pause with the crossing of Odense and Ed Ames. I wasn't sure of either so guessed as I had in most of the letters for both.

If any of you watched the series on John Adams' life the July 4th death date was part of the last episode.

Our first grandchild was born on the 4th.

Bill Walsh was a given, since he was the coach of the local team that we follow. He also coached at Stanford U. A wonderful coach and teacher.

Hi Eddy, I don't follow racing that close but I consider a major race to be one I have heard of (I went to an Indy 500 and was blown away!). I saw the Japanese win online but didn't think of it as major.

When she started racing, Danica was adamant about being taken seriously as a driver and then eventually used her other assets and now makes a comfortable living by being a decent driver and model just like Anna makes a decent living playing tennis and modeling. Kudos to both of them!

Hair was also my favorite. I remember reading a novel about Adams or Jefferson and their differences were mentioned a lot.
History was my favorite subject.

Husker-Thanks for the Ed Ames song, I didn't remember him on "Daniel Boone" but remember his singing.

Our daughter was born in Feb. 1964 but we didn't meet her until the age of 8 weeks, when we brought her home from the adoption agency.

My name always comes in blue on the blog but my info doesn't come up. I use my URL for ID and filled out the info for the blog twice but never can get it to come up.I mention this because Yellowrocks said he didn't know how to get in either. Can someone help? Thanks.

Yellowrocks and Marge too, you need a Google account to have a Profile that you can edit to include a photo avatar and whatever other information you want known about yourself.

Hello everyone. Reporting my return back on board.

Easy puzzle today but loved the 4th of July theme. The fact that Adams and Jefferson both lived exactly 50 years after the Declaration of Independence signing and died on the same day is beyond comprehension. Solve had both OTTO and TOOT. Do words that are the inside out form of another word, have a special name? These 2 are both palindromes.
