Hi,
although baseball was involved I aced it in under 9 minutes.
Finally some some cultural questions not from 60 years ago (way before my time). Guy Ritchie is an excellent director (Snatch with Brad Pitt playing a "pikey", Lock, Stock and two smoking barrels and others).
I liked American Gods, however, I have heard the Neil Gaiman book is better.

Vienna topped the list of best places to live recently. It is hard to object.

It is always good to see Jeff Chen and one of his mentees present a puzzle. It also shows how the world is brimming with theme ideas. Finally, this looks like it should have been a puzzle by our own baseball loving leader, C.C. If you do not follow baseball you would not know the team names, or that the pitcher who is selected to end a game is known as a closer. This would then be a very hard Tuesday.

How about AL Central team's victories?: TWINS WINS, or NL EAST team's aliens?: METS ETS.

We have an HRE- OTTO I and a Pope LEO I a/k/a ST LEO and the beleaguered TUTSI and BERLIN WALL . With no religon and no politics , tough to comment.

Thanks TTP and Jon/Jeff - this suggests the theme was Jon's idea.

Good morning Corner writers.

Thank you Mr. Jon Markman and Mr. Jeff Chen for this interesting CW. I am amazed that you could find so many MLB teams with closing words in their name. My favorite was BREWERS EWERS with the alternate meaning of "pitcher". I FIR in 23:17. Even though I am not a sports fan, I knew each team's name.

Thanks TTP for the investment expo, etc.

Good morning!

I liked this one, even though I have no idea which teams belong in which league. Caught the theme with Phillies. Was thinking Hutus before TUTSI showed up. Thanx, Jon, Jeff and TTP.

OTTO I: I suspect he may have been a tad more religious than this doubting Thomas. Or maybe not...

Doughnut: That'd be JFK, TTP.

Good Morning, TTP and friends. I caught the gimmick with the GIANTS ANTS.

My only error was to think that a Bro was a Bud instead of a BUB. The Bud gave me Dusts for Sculpted Works! Huh? Oh, BUSTS!

I liked the cross of EGO and AGO.

Tom EWELL makes frequent guest appearances in the crossword puzzles.

I am unfamiliar with the Outdoor Gear Brand of REI.

Did JFK really say he was a jelly doughnut?

Most dictionaries list LUXE as a noun. Thus the clue "sumptuous" is incorrect.

Good Morning:

This was a nice, easy stroll in the park and quite an enjoyable one, at that. I echo Hatoolah's Bud before Bub (I have a brother Bud) and noting the Ago/Ego crossing. Nice CSO to our DO and Jinx at Untie (Unite). And, ssssh, Tin at _ _ _ T. I wonder who and how they ever came up "Mr. T's" Law and Order moniker. Odafin Tutuola-it sounds like a tropical disease. Mariska Hargitay is the daughter of Jayne Mansfield and Mickey Hargitay. I was surprised that there was a reveal, as the theme was obvious but it tied the whole thing together quite neatly.

Nice work, Jon and Jeff and spot-on summary, TTP.

Ferm, I'm sorry to hear you're losing your friend and swimming partner.

Owen, fun offerings today.

FLN

CanadianEh, I got a chuckle out of your ALLbany comment. I wonder if other states where there is an Albany pronounce it the same way we do.

Have a great day.

Lucina said...

Even though I am not a sports fan, I caught theme early on and since I don't live in a bubble, have heard the names of those teams. The play on words was amusing. Good job, Jon and Jeff!

I knew Guy RITCHIE only as Madonna's ex-husband.

Nice CSO to d-o.

Last night we went to the most expensive restaurant I have ever been to. I had the prime rib for two meal served along with its gigantic rib bone! It was delicious but pricey. If you're familiar with Fleming's you know what I mean.

Thank you, TTP. I am glad you and other baseball fans enjoyed this puzzle; for me it was just another CW.

Have a beautiful day, everyone!

Spitzboov said...

Good morning everyone.

Fun puzzle today. I really liked the theme (unusual for me). It didn't exactly ROLL off the tongue but it was clever and engaging nonetheless. Only whiteout was 'lush' before LUXE. No searches were needed. Finally parsed the RONCO/ICE-T cross.
LOGS - TTP, thanks for the SO. Quartermasters usually keep (write) the rough log. A smoothed version is written later by the OOD (Officer of the Deck) which is sent to the Navy Dept. The first watch of the day summarizes the situation from the day before (course, speed, operations, ships in company, etc) and then following watches start of with phrases like "Steaming as before……………). The first log on in the New Year is done in verse.
REEL - Reminds me of the days when I had the collateral duty of movie officer (My division included the Internal Communications technicians who had the collateral duty of procuring and showing the nightly movies aboard our ship.) One time they sort of got into a rut of procuring a string of grade B westerns and other dull flicks. After some days the XO came to me and asked if we could try and get better stuff. I passed the along the XO's request to the IC men along with a little pep talk and a few days later, they came back with "Inherit the Wind" (about the Scopes trial,) which we were able to show before its first run in the Norfolk theaters.

Jon and Jeff, thanks for the trip down memory lane.

Abejo said...

Good morning, folks. Thank you, Jon Markman and Jeff Chen, for a fine puzzle. Thank you, TTP, for a fine review.

TTP: Thanks for the plug about the Junior Little League World Series and the fact that Johnsonburg, PA, is in it. As you said, one of twelve teams in the world. Elk County is a very rural area. When I was there years back the Sheriff's Dept had two officers, the Sheriff and the Deputy. Johnsonburg has less than 3,000 people in the borough. The whole town is built around the paper mill. Anyhow, let's all root for the team as they play tonight in Michigan.

The puzzle was also baseball focused. Must be in the wind this week. Liked it. The theme was tough for me to catch. I guess I was not looking too closely.

Did not know Guy RITCHIE. As a matter of fact, when I was doing this puzzle last night, via cruciverb, Sherlock Holmes was playing on TV. By the time I came to this question, it was over. So, I had to perp it.

I vaguely remember the RONCO name. Did not know EWELL. Perps.

SIRLOIN steaks are fine, but I like a N Y Strip Steak or a Rib Eye better.

IKEAS sure hits the puzzle a lot. We have a store close to us in Schaumburg, IL. They offer real cheap breakfasts there. I think it is a come on to get people in. I used to work real close to that store when I was with the K T Eye Foundation. We went for breakfast quite often.

Anyhow, have to run. Lots to do today. See you tomorrow.

Take me out to the ballgame Tuesday! Thanks for the fun, Jon and Jeff, and TTP.
Since my newspaper does not credit the constructor, I was sure I would arrive here to see that it was a C.C. puzzle.

I was hitting home runs all over this CW until I slowed down in the south.
I got the theme early which helped with the solve.
Agree with Dave, "My favorite was BREWERS EWERS with the alternate meaning of "pitcher"."
I don't think Jays Ays would work.

Almost a Natick when I didn't recognize the rapper or the Veg-O-Matic maker, but I didn't have to perform a very long alphabet run to insert the C; I remembered ICE T but am not that familiar with RONCO.

I had Sib before BUB.
Yes Dave, I smiled at MAPLE.
Hahtoolah - I learned REI from CWs (we have MEC here) but did not remember EWELL. Go figure!

Anon@7:49- the first dictionary I Googled (Merriam Webster online) to check your statement defines LUXE as an adjective meaning "luxurious, sumptuous". What dictionaries are you referencing?

Irish Miss - yes, I was not aware that I had a Canadian pronunciation of Albany until we had a discussion last year!

Canadian fuel efficiency stat is L/100km (litres per 100 kilometres). The lower the litres per 100 kilometres (L/100 km) rating, the lower the fuel consumption. Conversely, the higher the miles per gallon (mpg) rating, the better the fuel use.

fermatprime- you will be sorry to lose such close touch with your friend of 50 years (and not just as a swimming partner).

Wishing you all a great day.

CanadianEh: "Canadian fuel efficiency stat is L/100km (litres per 100 kilometres)"
Your system is actually much more useful. Ours is non-linear. (Mathematically, it is hyperbolic.) An improvement from 15MPG to 20MPG is way more valuable than an improvement from 30MPG to 35MPG.

Here I was at the BERLIN WALL and environs, after it came down.

Hahtoolah: Thanks for questioning the BERLIN/JFK story.

The Snopes fact checker says the Jelly Doughnut story is FALSE.

That line was written by Robert Lochner, who was, in fact, a Berliner. The story didn't circulate until 1988. Still, it is a cautionary tale if you plan to speak a line in a language you don't understand!

I've heard Albany on commercials pronounced AL-ba-knee, and also stressing the second syllable Al-BAY-knee.

Around the horn is a baseball term for a double- (or triple-) play started by the third baseman, who throws to second base, then to first base, the ball following a curved path like a cow's horns. For the show, implies different points of view. May have been derived from ships sailing from New York to San Francisco before the Panama Canal, requiring them to sail "around the Horn" (Cape Horn, or Cabo de Hornos, Chile)

Misty said...

Well, since I don't know baseball, this was tough for me, although, surprisingly, I got all the theme answers in the end until the reveal, when I had NLB CLOSERS instead of MLB CLOSERS. I figured it was National League Baseball or something like that. What does MLB stand for, anyway? I must have missed the explanation. But I have to admit it was fun to see the double words in each of the themes--that was a treat. And I appreciated how the down items around the themes helped even non-sports folks like me to get them. In the end I also goofed on another couple of items: had T NET rather than T NUT (didn't know the tribe) and NILLY instead of NILLA (don't know what I was thinking there). So, not my best Tuesday puzzle for sure, but still with some fun moments, thank you, Jon and Jeff. And thanks for your expo, TTP.

Sorry to hear you'll be missing your dear friend, Fermatprime.

The pronounciation of unfamiliar geographic locations sometimes results in hilarious (to the informed listener) or embarassing (to the speaker) results. Last night, a commentator mangled Utica, NY into You TEE ca, followed by UT ica. She was from out West, so it was an understandable error. I pronounced La Jolla incorrectly for years. Billocohoes might be amused by my then very young niece's reference to his city as Choses!

This is a quote from a man whose avatar is a make believe character from a TV show whose fans go to great lengths to celebrate. I seem to remember Picard telling us how much he admires this character which in real life really does not matter. But it is HIS opinion , so that makes more important than some ignorant sports fans' obsession with their own heroes.

I must have missed something about the pronunciation of Albany. I've always put the stress on the first syllable, AL-bany. Is there another pronunciation. Remember, I haven't been on line very often.

Some of you know how many mispronounce western cities' names, especially the Spanish ones. We have Ajo (a-ho) commonly pronounced as a-jo. Tucson (tu-son) mispronounced as Tuck-son and so many more.

Some correct WAGs got me going on this: HORN, ICE T, GODS & RITCHIE. Had never heard of the GODS author or book.

Tried Iron Curtain before BERLIN WALL, but too many letters. Hand up for BUd before BUB. The latter seems more sarcastic or detrimental when used.

Well, hmm, an okay puzzle, and I have to admit the theme gimmick was pretty nifty. It has happened before that figuring out the theme can often lead to filling in some of the entries in advance (eg. starts with P), so this is nothing new.

Hand up for entering LUSH at first. I also had NECCO instead of NILLA. My other hand up for entering IRON CURTAIN and then realizing it is one letter short.

There is a city named Albany not very far from here; we all pronounce it ALL buh nee.

FLN - For those who've seen The Drew Carey Show, you have heard Cheap Trick's "Cleveland Rocks" [2:46]

Picard - Alias descendent D-O lives up the way in a subdivision called Roman Forest.

Bill-O: I got sucked into the Far Side a little too long... Thanks. You too CED w/ Bugs.

Misty - to add to PVX; if you have an Over the Air HD antenna you probably get MeTV. Pop watches old shows on that all the time (loves him some Columbo).

WC - 132ft/s

Hahtoolah - I thought I knew how to pronounce Nak-a-doh-shus until just now...

Abejo - Go Elks!

Breakfast cereal in Houston: Astros' O's? :-)

Cheers, -T
*It was cool - you couldn't hack the power plant directly but "Smart House" neighbor had a computer that could VPN to his office at the power plant. First, attack the garage door and work out from there... Like I said, fun!

Thank you, Anon T. I don't have an antenna, but I'll keep working on getting more access to TV programs.

Ok 90mph=132 ft/sec. So... At regulation mound, 60'6" we have .4583 sec(60.5/132). So -T, let's guess Junior LL is 55'. What velocity will result in .4583 seconds reaction time.
That is I'm guessing that LL ers are facing the equivalence of 90mph.
Or let's guess <13(LL) at 45' are seeing Big league fastballs.

Btw, nice to have you back, -T.

Final "note" - Cleveland does rock. It's where RUSH got air play as documented in "Beyond the Lighted Stage."

Well, since we're on a baseball detour, how about --

NL West team's plans -- DODGERSDODGES

or not quite as closely to pattern,

AL West team's grandparents -- PADRES'MADRES.

(Like another great mind here says, 'Thanks, I'll just show myself out.')
