YEOMAN is not a rank in the Coast Guard or the Navy. Seaman is a rank, Petty Officer Third Class is a rank. Yeoman is a rating. Sometimes it is an (informal) position like a ship's Yeoman.

I saw the letters of I N S T A in the themers but was expecting a reveal relating to Saint something or other. I accept Jzb's analysis of the Gram part of the reveal but I don't find it a very strong connection. In fact, before reading the expo, I was totally bewildered about the portmanteau itself. I had Aide before Page and also fell into the Seaman/Yeoman trap. Seeing Sela Ward with an FBI reference was jarring as she's no longer on the show. I miss her understated and measured performance and do not like her replacement's totally opposite, direct and forceful acting style. Arie and Baum, as clued, needed perps. CSO to Lucina at Arizona.

I liked the clues and "peek-____" and "one who takes off a lot" until the latter turned out to be AVIATOR. Down boy, no LEVITRA for you.
Pete DYE is a famous designer of very difficult golf courses. I liked seeing DYED next to RAKE. I support the concept of removing RAKEs from bunkers. Proficient golfers often aim for them because they are more likely to hit it close enough out of the bunker to make their first putt. I think a sand trap should be a TRAP.
A cent in a dish goes back to those quaint days when most folks paid cash for most things. I have a friend who manages a local restaurant, and he says that his cash receipts aren't enough to pay out the tips added to credit card tabs. We have a few restaurants that won't take cash at all.
FLN, -T when I quit smoking in 1978 (ring a bell?), I went through the American Heart Association's smoking cessation program at a local hospital. One of the techniques I used was was to wrap a piece of paper around my pack, and I had to write down the details every time I lit up. Where and what time it was, who I was with, what was going on, and what I was feeling. A couple of weeks later I had quit for good. By the way - you are far too smart to smoke. Unless your DW smokes, she will LOVE kissing a nonsmoker, and I hope it is YOU!

Jinx, I smoked for about ten years, but decided to quit as I approached my thirties. Decided the easiest way for me was to switch to small cigars, which I didn't inhale, but still let me light up and do the smoking routine. I was the first woman ever hired in the Tulsa English department, and at the first department meeting, they pointed out that they had a side for smokers and another side for non smokers. When I sat down in the smoking section and lit up my small cigar, they almost had heart attacks. Couldn't believe they'd hired a female cigar smoker. My addiction wore off quickly, though, and I never smoked again. And the department hired lots of other women after me.

I tripped and fell at OAKS/KEY. For some reason my mind just wouldn't work there though I had FRET/HIYA.
When I saw "air Jordan" my mind fixated on Jordan and I thought of the river until the penny dropped and NIKE fell in place.
In Istanbul we visited the Topkapi Palace, former home of the Sultans, and toured the HAREM quarters. It's a series of many small rooms linked together.
MENSA is a good place to find and print the LAT puzzle if it's not otherwise available.

Today I celebrate (?) the thirty-seventh anniversary of my thirty-ninth birthday, or as Husker Gary might put it, "Today I completed my seventy-sixth orbit of the sun, and am happily already embarked on my seventy-seventh." IM, I'll be going out to my favorite gastro pub, where I'll have dinner prepared by Chef Armando. His specials always are just that. Don't know what I'll have yet, but it is bound to be good.
DW and I usually celebrated special occasions with a fancy dinner at a local Northern Italian restaurant with great food and a wine list that "Wine Spectator" magazine raves about, but somehow without her company, a brew pub seemed to fill the bill for me.

Well, I shot myself in the foot in this puzzle, requiring me to look up Mr. Luyendyk's first name in order to finish. Specifically, I had (over)confidently entered GEM as thing on a ring and HI MA as the casual greeting. Even after looking up ARIE I still had no idea what OAGS were. I figured GEM was wrong (although the E was correct) but didn't know what else to put in there until I went for a walk and came back later.
I wanted tp put in ABDOMEN and have no idea why I didn't. I should have, in hindsight.
And, like CEDave, I put in an L to give NELLE and BLUM. Happy birthday to you!
I learned the Senate helper was PAGE, not AIDE, and the place where a mote can be seen was RAY, not EYE.

But the 'Gale' clue had me stumped. and for the "Under the chest" clue I kept thinking six-pack abs, and with even ABDO_EN in place, BAUM would not fall. Don't know why but I filled AB DOZEN. Duh! DNF.
FREE WI FI- there's a man I've seen many times who lives in his minivan, parks it at Wal-Mart, pays his dues for the local hospital health club so he can use the showers. He's old enough to be on Medicare so he probably has a Medicare Advantage plan that provides a free health club membership. I see his van parked at the local Wendy's, MacDonald's, Starbucks, and Wal_Mart. He is never eating anything but is always on his laptop at the restaurants using the free WIFI. I guess he washes his clothes at a washateria.

Roland is a good constructor, and limits their use. To me, fun clues and answers is the most important requirement for a good puzzle. Not a tough slog, or at the other extreme obvious answers.

I am late to the party again; this is a busy week.
I FIWed with my personal Natick of ARIE and KEY. (My fingerboard bar ended up as a FIST!)
I noted all the technology today with EBOOK, IPHONE, NET TV, INSTAGRAM and FREE WIFI to access them.
I was upset at the "under the sink cleaners" being LYES, not thinking that under the sink referred to the clogged drain. I was thinking of storage, and you definitely don't want to store LYES there, especially if there might be children around!
Thanks for the belated Thanksgiving wishes, IM and AnonT. Yes the turkey (and everything else) was delicious; I enjoyed the leftovers even better as I was not rushing around trying to make sure the crowd was fed.

Dash T, I delete them as soon as I see them, but like Argyle used to say (paraphrased), "I'm not here 24 7."
What's funny is when I read frantic comments (almost shouting as if in all caps) on the blog saying a particular comment needs to be removed. Uh, I can recognize them when I see them, and don't need a comment in the blog (that I'm not seeing at that particular point in time anyway, or it would already be gone) to tell me that it needs to be removed. Doesn't help.
Guess I need to publish my Pageboy Director beeper number. It's AC 212-555-5555.
OTOH, I think the vast majority of our readers can recognize spam posts and won't just blindly click links or start sending emails to Dr Ordumodu about any one of the 25 illnesses the poster claims he can cure.

FLN, -T, I had just bought a pack at my barroom hangout. I offered one and the guy gave me the "black lung" spiel.
"You're right" I said but "How do I quit?"
"You just don't smoke" he said. "So, what do I do with the pack I just bought?". "Throw it away, you don't smoke anymore"
I tossed it into the basket behind the bar and that was it. The key? I'm such a cheapskate I couldn't go through the agony of ever tossing a pack again . And…
