It's Mardi Gras, so Laissez les bons temps rouler!

Let's go to the Movies!  The last word of each movie theme answer can follow the word "Hollywood" to give us a new concept.

17-Across. 1950 Gloria Swanson film: SUNSET BOULEVARD.  Hollywood Boulevard.

Sunset Boulevard was a film by Billy Wilder about a silent film star hoping to make a comeback.

25-Across. 1979 Jim Henson film: THE MUPPET MOVIE.  Hollywood Movie.

Hollywood movies aren't necessarily filmed in Hollywood.

The Muppet Movie is based on the television show, The Muppets.

42-Across. 1988 Demi Moore film: THE SEVENTH SIGN.  Hollywood Sign.

The title of The Seventh Sign, an apocalypse film, is apparently a reference to the seven seals in the New Testament book of Revelation.  It got very poor ratings when it came out.  Probably they haven't improved with time.

The Hollywood Sign dates to 1923, when it was erected as an advertisement for a local real estate development.  It originally read "Hollywoodland".  The "Land" portion has been lost, but the rest of the sign soon became an icon.

And the Unifier:
57-Acrosss. 2002 Woody Allen film ... or what each of the last words of 17-, 25- and 42-Across can be: HOLLYWOOD ENDING.  Hollywood Endings is about a film director trying to make a comeback.

35. Peruvian singer Sumac: YMA.  We haven't seen Ms. Sumac (1922 ~ Nov. 1, 2008) in quite some time.  She used to make frequent appearances in the puzzles.  She has quite a unique voice.

Another fun Paul C. puzzle presented with a very comprehensive write-up from Susan. The links always take more time to read than solving the Tuesday. I was never very familiar with the word PATEN and I checked and it has been more than 10 years since its 2nd appearance in the LAT.

ELIN continues her attraction to professional athletes, though JORDAN CAMERON was not as successful as Tiger. He did play two seasons here SoFla which is how they met, I believe. He quit at 28 because of his concern about the long term effects of concussions.

Moviemakers do like college and law school campuses for location shooting as they are well maintained and loaded with countless potential extras. It was on the University of Florida campus where I appeared in the movie, THE NAKED APE

Thank you Paul and Susan

FIR, but had to erase fOSS. DW has a class today with a certified Bob ROSS art instructor (who knew?). The whole class paints the same scene. She seems to enjoy it, even though she was an accomplished artist util a few years ago.

How many times have you heard "ATM machine"?

Sac bunts don't always result in an out. The fielder could try to make a put out of an existing runner but not get him, or could throw the ball over the first baseman's head. The batter still gets a SAC, but no out is recorded.

HIT ME won't get you a card in a casino. You must rake your cards toward you, or if is a face-up game, point at your cards and tap the felt.

I actually enjoyed this PC puzzle. I'm glad I didn't skip it, as was my first inclination. And thanks to Hahtoolah for the fun review. I always enjoy your quotes, and today's was especially fun. BTW, here's one Zoe showed me last night: "It is also to be noted of every species, that the handsomest of each move best ... and beasts of the most elegant form, always excel in speed; of this, the horse and greyhound are beautiful examples."----Wiliam Hogarth, The Analysis of Beauty, 1753.

PATEN brought me back to my days of walking in the dark to 6am mass. Probably more danger in the sacristy than the mean streets of San Mateo. Unscathed through all of it. I ignored the theme and had no problems with the themers. Fun solve.

Thanks, Susan. I enjoyed the many pics and links in your review. If you folks enjoyed the puzzle, a lot of the credit goes to Rich. It was his idea to make this all about movies. My original submission had theme answers like GIVETHEHIGHSIGN - "Signal to proceed" and HEADFORTHEHILLS - "Take off."

In grandkid news, Ava turns one in a few weeks. She's at the trying-to-walk stage, constantly pulling herself up on tables, etc. You can tell it makes her happy, since she smiles every time she does it. Her big sister Addie's fourth birthday is only two weeks later. My son and I were going to build a play set from a kit in the back yard, but my daughter-in-law thinks it would require constant supervision, so I'm giving Addie a play house instead. She's such a good little girl. Reminds me so much of my son at that age. Happy, helpful, smart, and kind. Full of boundless energy.

Good morning!

No problem this morning, except that I missed the theme. I thought it was simply movie titles. D'oh! Still it was a nice romp. I immediately inked in PATEN -- has it really been 10 years? Thanx, Paul and Hahtoolah.

ALTE: I remember they used to call Adenauer "Der Alte."

UPI: There was a UPI press card in my wallet for several years.

KEANU: He was Neo in the Matrix franchise.

EDIE: She's appearing now as a lesbian LA Police Chief in Tommy. There's been lotsa hype, but it's questionable if it'll make the grade.

Taxing day. Gotta run...

Paul, thank you for sharing your observations of your grandchildren. For me, the year from one to two is an incredibly fun year. I enjoy watching the process so much, not only of our own grandkids but Oo's great, great-grandson from Thailand is a potential Youtube star.

Good Morning:

My recent absence from the Corner is due to the lingering malaise from my bout with the shingles and ensuing eye problems, plus getting hit with a severe cold and exhausting cough. I'm feeling better, physically, but am now coping with the sudden and unexpected death of my eldest brother on Sunday morning. He was 90 but in relatively good health, so this was a shock for everyone. Losing two siblings in a span of five weeks takes its toll.

Thank you all for your kind concern about me; it is truly appreciated. Arnold @ 5:45, 2/23, thank you for your kind words.

PK, we are sisters in sorrow right now and you are very much in my thoughts.

inanehiker said...

Quick romp on this one! Thanks Paul for stopping by and to Susan for the entertaining blog!

My prayers will include you Agnes - for healing and strength from your recent illnesses and dealing with the grief of losing your brother and sister so close together!

Good morning everyone.

Fun puzzle with the long but easy acrosses. Thanks Paul for stopping by and expanding on the origins.
Perps helped with the 2nd 'U' in UNUM.
ATM - Agree with Jinx. La Brea and knots per hour(really bad) are in the same category of nonplusses.
SINO - Also reminds me of Dutch sinaasappel and German apfelsine (orange (Chinese apple))

Happy Mardi Gras to all.

Yellowrocks said...

Belated happy birthday OMK. Cool photo.
PK, my condolences, you are in my thoughts.
IM, glad to hear from you. My condolences to you, too. Losing two brothers in such a short time must be truly difficult. I am sorry your ocular shingles has given you so much trouble. I hope you are on the mend.
La Brea Tar Pits and ATM Machine are now in the language. So much of English is illogical, I have no nit with this.

Paul C. said...

About ATMMACHINE - There are quite a few such examples of expressions with redundant words following abbreviations. I made a puzzle with IRAACCOUNT, PINNUMBER, LEMMODULE, SALTTALKS, ATMMACHINE. Rich and the other editors said that similar grids had already been done.

KenoRunner said...

Nice meta theme.

Spitzboov said...

IM - My deepest sympathy on the loss of your brother.

D-O - - You beat me to commenting on Der Alte, Chancellor Adenauer.

My 0808 - - Should have capitalized Apfelsine.

-MIL’s 95-yr-old brother died yesterday. We are trying to see if there is an UPSIDE to telling her as it will greatly distress her but she will forget it within fifteen minutes.
-Know what I MEAN, Vern?
-Wyatt EARP’s Colt .45 that may have been used at the OK Corral recently sold for $225,000
-Kids were amazed that the ANAT of a chicken wing was similar to that of their arm when dissecting
-SUBLETTING an apartment was a plot device in The Goodbye Girl

Hola!

What a SMOOTH solve today! Thank you, Paul. It is really nice to hear from you and to learn about the progress of your grand children. They sound delightful.

I like seeing Keanu REEVES in the puzzle. My favorite role for him was A Walk in the Clouds. I have not seen any of the John Wick movies.

CIVIL WAR. Talk about a contradiction!

As a former Eucharistic minister and Sacristan, I am familiar with PATEN.

VIBE next to ENER(gy) is not so vague.

Irish Miss:
I am so sorry about what you are experiencing, both in your own health and the losses you have endured. Sometimes life seems unbearable but we derive strength from so many sources, including faith. I hope that is what helps you. You also have the support of this Corner community.

Have a fulfilling day, everyone! Enjoy Mardi Gras.

Terrific Tuesday. Thanks for the fun, Paul (glad you dropped by) and Hahtoolah.
This CW was a little sticky with movie and star names, but perps were fair and it filled with only a few inkblots.
RIDER decided the E in PATEN was not an O.
TIBET changed Ascends to ASCENTS (noun was needed not verb).
But I arrived here to discover I FIWed. I wrinkled my nose at Viing for 30D; there was a good reason, as it should have been VYING. (I had debated between Ida, Iva and Ima for Ms Sumac, but erred - it is YMA! And we have seen her before here.)

Baseball (not EYEBALLS) for WC and C.C. today with ALOU, SAC.
Nautical theme with FURL, TIDE and PIER.
I learned ETUI early in my CW-solving career.
I think those future MDs take at least one Chem LAB along with ANAT. Not A SNAP.
Hand up for the clue for IOU being my favourite (as opposed to Hahtoolah's favorite).

Thanks for dropping by Irish Miss. Thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.

Wishing you all a good day.
Happy Mardi Gras.

A SOSO Tuesday challenge. Not ASNAP but was willing TIBET I would finish and did with a few crossouts. If I'd perp checked I also would have put THE SEVENTH SIGN instead of seal.

EDAM the cheese that is "made" backward.

Caesar said to Brutus: ETUI Brute (or something like that)

Ditto to DO ...German chancellor Konrad Adenauer : der ALTE. "The old one"...Favorite clue "shy note" and ELOI in every puzzle doesnt STUN me.

Our president quashed legislature by using DEVITO power

The CIVILWAR was anything but.

Remember the TV rerun of Gloria Swanson's insane expression approaching the camera. "Alright I'm ready for my my cloeup Mr. DeMille"

Wasn't an X-Files fan and foolishly WAGed "proof" instead of perp walking the TRUTH out there. ASCENTS of purpose.

DOE indicates Dyspnea On Exertion in my book (or when Homer realized he hit a deer..."DOE? ! d'oh!!")

Happy Fat Tuesday

IM, prayers coming! What an awful time for you.

C'mon, guys, Keanu Reeves in SPEED with Sandra Bullock!!!

On a completely different note, one of the more interesting permanent exhibits at the Gene Autry Museum here in the L.A. area
(actually in Griffith Park) is the mock up of the alley in which the O K Corral gun fight took place. Not in a corral but an alley way between two buildings. It comes with a recorded sound track (of course not from then, but based on oral records from witnesses).
It was really quick and pretty lethal. The Gene Autry is a pretty cool museum.

Good morning, folks. Thank you, Paul Coulter, for a fine puzzle. Thank you, Hahtoolah, for a fine review.

Irish Miss: Nice to see you today. So sorry to hear you have Shingles. I went through that as well a few years ago. Also sorry about the losses in your family. May God be with you.

Puzzle went through pretty easily. Theme made sense. Nice long answers.

ONION is the best addition to a burger.

Our old friend ETUI.

I have been watching Tommy starring EDIE Falco. Not a bad show.

Needed perps for LOLA.

Danny DEVITO is a great actor, IMHO.

Lots to do today. Have to get ready for a meeting tonight. See you tomorrow.

Hi Y'all! Fast & fun puzzle, Paul. I enjoy hearing about your enjoyment of your granddaughters. Reminds me of the time half a dozen family members were sitting around watching my granddaughter at 6 mos. being cute on a blanket in the middle of the floor. One of my kids said, "Remember when we all sat around watching TV instead of a baby?"

Hahtoolah, great expo. Always wanted to see Mardi Gras. Consolation: my granddaughter is probably there now. She's still at Loyolla.

Ray-o-S.: you made me chuckle a lot today. Clap! Clap! Clap! DeVito power trumps what we got.

Agnes: thinking hugs across the airwaves for you! My brother was 65 but decrepit.

If any one is listening RE the shingles shot..get it at your pharmacy.

I'm on Medicare with Excellus supplement who made me jump through hoops to get the first of the two shot series paid for (around 300$). I had the first shot at my MDs office. Excellus told to get the second shot at a pharmacy where it it would be paid for with no hassle.

Loved this puzzle, Paul--worked my way through it and got every bit of it, including the long grid-spanners with all the fun Hollywood answers. I was happy that I got all the names that popped up, RUSSO, DEVITO, ALOU, and ODIE. Susan, as soon as I saw all those great picture illustrations, I knew that the commentary had to be yours. Many thanks for that too. And Paul, thanks for checking in with us and so nice to hear about your sweet grandchildren.

So glad to see your post, Irish Miss. But how sad that you've had to deal not only with health issues but also the sad loss of two of your siblings. My heart goes out to you. Take good care of yourself.

Have a good day, everybody.

Thoughts & wanderings:

Don't confuse The Seventh Sign (IMDB 5.9) with Se7en (IMDB 8.6)

Thru digital magic, they have turned Bob Ross into a music video!

Would you believe, I never saw this Superbowl Ad...

There is a Netflix documentary called "Echoes of the Canyon" that
does a great job of describing the atmosphere of the 60's music scene,
and remakes some old songs that are worth hearing again. But if you do not
have Netflix, ABC-7 did a great documentary that is available on YouTube.
but you will have to search around the side links for all the snippets if you don't want to miss any great talent.

(update:)
(the 1st link shown appears to be the entire 46 minute documentary.)

This was a nice Tuesday puzzle.

Write-overs...UPSHOT/UPSIDE, ASCENDS/ASCENTS.

PC... pulling themselves up, holding on and walking while they do so is called “coasting”. The next “step” is solo.

Husker G...when my Dad passed we debated telling Mom as her dementia had set in for some time. When we told her, she put her head down for a moment, cried softly and said “My Eddie’s gone”. It was rough to see, but I think it settled her a bit, she was fine later. Plus at least she knew, at least for the moment. No regrets telling her.

See you tomorrow.

Even if you had the old Zostavax Shingles shot its only about 50% effective. It's recommended that you still get the newer Shingrix shot which is 90% plus effective and doesn't "wear off"

As for cream cheese and cinnamon...to each his ....or her... own. Haydel is the granddaddy. Or maybe Gambino. Beulah Lednar, who started it all is dead. But there are so many new ones. Even grocery stores have their own, I like Rouse. But it’s plain....and cheap!

What a day of shared grief and joy here. It does not compare but four years ago when I was 67 my oldest brother died. That was preceded by the death of our middle brother six years before. I am not only an orphan but the only survivor of our family of five. Every day is a gift and the memories a blessing, but it isn't always easy. I do appreciate the group comfort of coming to the Corner where we can exult in the progress of our grandchildren and lessen the burden of loss.

Thank you, C.C. and all of you out there/

Thank you for today's kind comments.

CED, don't ever go out of business! You have your unique enjoyable style & Hahtoolah has her own.

Hahtoolah, so hard to lose old friends. Hard to make new ones to replace them the older one gets. Two of my good friends from working days came to visit last week and we gabbed for three hours -- much of it was about who had died that we used to know.

Gary, As for telling MIL, a relative of my husband was frozen in a catatonic state with no movement except swallowing and no speech. His wife came three times a day to the nursing home and fed him. She had a heart attack and died. Their kids didn't know if Dad was cognizant in there at all, but they told him. No response until big tears rolled down his cheek. He then died a few weeks later.

Hi again.

Alex Trebeck has been doing a wonderful job at the helm of Jeopardy for many years. It's hard to imagine the show without him. However, I think a most annoying habit of his is when a contestant misses an answer and he interjects, "Oh no!" as if the correct answer was totally obvious. I don't think he means it that way but it seems a little demeaning to the contestant. JMO...

~ Mind how you go...
