IBM: Today those letters don't stand for anything. Like NCR, IBM dropped the words in favor of just the three letters.
EMBARRASS: That's the name of a small town (pop. approx. 400) in the county where I grew up. I've often wondered how it got its name, so I looked it up: "Many of the early lumberjacks in the town were French Canadians. When they tried to send logs down the river they found it almost impossible because of the many snags and other debris, so they named it the Riviere Embarrase, embarrase being a French word meaning to impede, to obstruct, or to entangle." per WIKI. Who knew?
BTW, can't see the image at the bottom of the blog, so there's nothing to click on. That's using FireFox on an IPhone. Same story using Safari.

Starting out with the acrosses, I filled in quite a bit. Put EYE for observe before needing it later. Not reading carefully I put sen/GOV and spike/CLEAT. Having had three soccer-playing children, I should have gotten the last one easily. Perps straightened it all out. Hadn't thought of SPARERIBs as a snack. YUM?

I didn't see the theme. The theme itself was fun, but IMO the reveal was expressed awkwardly. EVANS was the only unfamiliar fill.
Love edamame, a healthy snack. In the Chinese restaurant you can get spare ribs as a snack or as a entree. Dave makes the most delicious ribs on the grill.
Since I get full more quickly these days, sometimes I order an appetizer as my entree. Then no dessert. When in a group sometimes we order appetizers and desserts to share.
Still running down medical insurance issues. My primary insurance, Aetna, has become more user friendly, but the medical part of auto insurance is cumbersome. I am dealing with three entities just for medical. One hand doesn't know what the other hand is doing.
Do you get dozens of robo calls about Medicare? My premium is part of my retirement benefits if I stick with Aetna.

The Twins took 2 of 3 against the White Sox earlier this month at Target Field, the rebuilding (rebuilt ?) White Sox are hosting the Twins in a 4 game series at Guaranteed Rate Field starting tonight. Big, big series, with a lot on the line. I'll be watching. I'm sure Boomer will be watching as well !

So we hit the 'reset' button' and start on Monday difficulty again. Nice puzzle from Craig. No wite-out was needed. Fill was right and entries were entered under the right numbers. OK theme, but didn't really use it. Yesterday we had SAND PILE; today we had MASON which he/she uses to make mortar. Agree with Boomer about AMPS; make sure your circuit breakers are correctly sized by a knowledgeable electrician. Graybar switchgear is a plus. CSO to HG on OMAHA where he gets his steaks.Favorite clue/fill was for TEA.

DO, interesting that the town name, Embarrass, came from embarrase, French for impede. And in Spanish, embarazado means pregnant. You cannot always guess the meaning of foreign words which look similar to English ones.
PREGO in English slang mean pregnant. PREGO in Italian means You're welcome, among other polite words.
Mae West's original line was, "Why don’t you come up sometime and see me?" She changed it to "Come up and see me sometime" in her next movie, I'm No Angel. This came to be her signature line.

EDAMAME: Do you cook and eat the pods along with the soybeans? Soybeans are raised on my farms, but I only cooked the beans like I would navy beans and ate them once. Family members didn't like them.

The Recurring motif of this puzzle should have been "Girls don't make passes at cruciverbalists who where foggy glasses." To wit...I misread 2D as "overheat then mistakenly thought 3D "humiliate" belonged in 2D and wrote in Abase.
After that inky fiasco. In the SW corner I put "ceded" instead of CAVED even though I knew somehow it had to be NAVAL. I was so confused I dare say I DNF a Monday puzzle (*** hangs head in shame***)

I FIRed in good Monday time (but not under 4 minutes- congrats Anon@8:52) with just one inkblot (a momentary inking of Ceded before realizing CAVED fit the clue more appropriately - hi Ray'o).
The theme took a moment to connect, as I saw FOCUS as an AUTO but MOBILE, GRAPH and TUNE did not fit. Ah, AUTO MATES.
DREAM CAR placed centre-right in the grid was an added theme touch!
I noted several M endings in the top half (IBM, A TEAM, RAM, YUM) but then they LET UP.
I think of rain letting up as stopping, not becoming more gentle. Just my word usage perhaps.
Yes IM & PK, I noticed LET UP and AMP UP as a slight dupe. Interesting how the meanings differ (Stop vs. Increase).
Hand up for uttering a huge MEH! at DERAT. But Merriam Webster lists it as a word. Perhaps DE-words will join our hated A-words!
I wanted Ovum before OVULE. Ovum is the egg cell in animals, while OVULE is the structure in a plant that develops into a seed. And we had SEEDY next! (IM beat me to EGG-but it didn't quite cross)
If you "dug in", I doubt you would say that you ATE just one SPARERIB! That would be a very small snack IMO.

DERAT sticks out in this otherwise very fine puzzle. I understand it is an actual word, but my personal vote would have been to re-work that section to have avoided it, particularly for a Monday puzzle.

I successfully did CC's Sunday LA Times puzzle in the Washington Post yesterday in pencil and paper along with a little bit of eraser. I saw the theme early and was able to use it to my advantage. Good puzzle CC.
HG @ 10:00am: I worked for Fred Haise for a number of years and I have his autograph also. Mostly on performance reviews and some other documents. Jim Lovell wrote "Lost Moon".
When I was growing up in central Pennsylvania there were a number of natural and man-made wonders that I never saw until I moved back here too retire. There are still some I need to see. However, when I lived in NYC and DC I got to see most of the sights because every time company visited I had to take them on a tour to all of the sights, museums and attractions. DW, however rarely got to go because of kids or work.

The difference between soybeans and edamame is in the level of maturity when the beans are harvested. Mature soybeans are a light cream color while edamame is harvested when the beans are still young, soft and green.
To boil: Bring a large pot of water to a boil and salt it generously. Add the edamame in their pods, return to a boil and cook until bright green, 3 to 5 minutes. Drain.
To microwave: Put the edamame in a microwave-safe dish with ¼ cup water and a pinch of salt, cover partly and microwave on high until bright green, 1 to 5 minutes, depending on your microwave power.
The shells are not edible. We squeeze the shell to pop the edamame right into our mouths. Fun to eat.
PK, maybe your soy beans were too mature.

-oc4 – The book Lost Moon is right on the shelf here and I see Jim Lovell’s name as the author (which I knew anyway) on the spine but I best remember hearing Fred talk to us at a dinner and should have said “inside the book about Apollo 13 where he was a crew member.” I see I even misspelled his name. I think I’ll go and open that book and look at his autograph again. :-) Thanks for the gentle reminder.
-One thing Fred told us was the movie invented a lot of drama that never happened. Fred quoted director Ron Howard as having said, “We have to put in some conflict or we won’t sell much popcorn!”

I was not familiar with the Frog and the Fox, so I learnt something new. Of course, I was aware of The only one fabulous fabelist. So, I hied to your review ... and found out that the frog must have been very smart indeed ... in the very next sentence he turned into a turtle ... which, must have been an improvement, I suppose. ;-)
On that matter of fables, may I recommend, an indian set of fables, Panchatantra, 5 Tales, Wiki. I have 5 copies of this book, .... they are a long but very pleasant reading. If you decide to buy or borrow this book from a library, I Highly Recommend that you ONLY consider the Arthur W. Ryder translation ... which, in my opinion, is 10 times better than the original source, whatever it was.
Uma, is the name of an indian mythology goddess, an alternate name for Parvati, the wife of Shiva. She would be, I suppose, the equivalent of Hera, wife of Zeus. She is the Mother goddess of Hinduism, and the name, Uma, is very common in India. Ms. Uma Karuna Thurman got that name from her father, who was presumably an ordained buddhist monk, for a time. Certainly convenient for crosswordese.

Puzzle was very doable with still a bit of crunch here and there. Never heard of PULSAR, for example. Nice to see THEME in a puzzle. 'Leaves in hot water' didn't fool me for a minute--I put in TEA instantly. AESOP shows up surprisingly often in puzzles, but HESSE not often. Anyway, lots of fun.

On my iPad Air 2 with the latest iOS update using Safari I can see and play the video fine...but did you have to use wrestling? Haha.
On my iPhone 8 with the latest iOS update using Safari the video isn’t there at all.
Couldn’t get the Daisy Mae link either, but it said Dynamic Link Not Found.

A fun, quick puzzle. You know, Monday. It look longer than the under four minutes that Anonymous reported above - that's is fast. I had the puzzled completed before "groking" the theme.
I haven't had a lot of time this past week to focus on posting here. Now that the cat is out of the bag, I can say that I have been spending time getting up to speed on other aspects of the blog-o-verse. I have learned quite a bit with "miles to go before bwfore I post" Apologies, Mr. Frost.

I looked at the 50D and 58A and knew it wasn't right. A, E, I and never got to O and left the I in. Wrong! After Boomer clued me in, I looked and seen that I read the clue wrong. Oh well. Good week last week in xword terms and did a credible job with Sunday's offering. Thanks WC for this weeks preview. Have a great day.

FIR and saw the theme. As usual, I took my time this morning and worked on the puzzle while doing my blood pressure routine. Took me about a half hour to finish up both at the same time. Four unknowns: EVANS, REA, EPAMAME and HESSE. Perps got them.
I’d have been here much sooner, but I had to go in today and help our mechanic get some engine parts out of an old engine storage unit. Mind you, I know nothing about anything mechanical; I’m just the, “Hold this here” and “Take up some slack there” and “When I lower the HEAVY top back onto the storage unit with the forklift, make sure THAT one-inch stud poking up THERE goes into THAT hole THERE” guy. Anyway, we (well, HE) got it done!
Learning moment: I didn’t realize that a tidal wave and a tsunami are not really synonymous.
Boomer, we always used the words spikes and cleats interchangeably. Then there was Clete, who had the PERFECT baseball name, (and older brothers Cloyd and Ken) Boyer. Didn’t realize until I just looked it up that there were seven boys and seven girls in that family!

C.C., I was able to view the video on my desktop PC running an old version of Windows (don’t ask – don’t tell) and Firefox. However, I couldn’t even see the link on my AT&T Samsung Android phone, or on my Sprint Android tablet. Go figure.

I liked this puzzle but was confused about the theme. Having the reveal AUTO MATES and the answer GRAPH PAPER I thought it worked like AUTO GRAPH and PAPER MATES (ball-point pens), but the other theme answers didn't work like that. APP MATES? Nah.
Otherwise, WEES, including the nose wrinkle at DERAT. On the other hand, if one can de-louse ...
An interesting learning moment about Uma Thurman. Also about the town called EMBARRASS.
Of the three cars, I would pick the Corvette.

C.C., I can see the video on my iPhone with Safari, and also on my iPad with Safari. My iPhone went kaplooey just in time to feel isolated by the impending Hurricane Sally. Great timing.
Yesterday was a better day. SAINT WON, Falcons lost, and Brady looked awful. What more can a Who Dat ask? And now we get a hurricane. Oh well.

YR: thanks for the info on EDAMAME. D-O: Groan! No one in our area raised soybeans because they need more rainfall than we normally got. When we were able to put in irrigation systems, our family got brave and planted them. The time I cooked them, my husband brought some dried soybeans straight from the combine. The rest were stored in bins or hauled to the only dealer who bought and sold them an hours' drive away. Everybody in the family complained that they caused gastric distress. So they were strictly a money crop for us.
SwampCat - Thanks. It was taken in May, 1961, soon after Alan Shepard's 1st sub-orbital flight which we participated in. (He flew 80 miles over our heads.)

C.C. iPhone 13.6 there's not even a picture to click the WWE link. Old iPad 2 on iOS 9.3.5 can play it fine.
I looked at the HTML code and it might be the that's in the paragraph tag that's causing the issue. If there's just a space, maybe Safari skips the paragraph all together?
