Is it Tuesday or Friday? This struck me as a pretty difficult puzzle, especially with such answers as “ASMR” and “Tesori.” However, the theme was soon clear and that helped to some extent, anyway. FIR, so I’m happy.

BYE, FELICIA is an idiom, a verbal missile,
A rude way of expressing a DISMISSAL!
It came from a movie,
Spread 'cause it was groovy,
And made the dismissee bristle!

The CRESCENDO of many a piece
Is EVOCATIVE of cathartic relief.
When one is RILED up,
Feeling full of guff,
It lets go and brings blessed peace!

Good morning!

Gotta love a Tuesday themeless, even if it's strewn with unknown names, and initialisms. Not. TESORI, ASMR, AILEY, ERG, GRINDR, BAI, I'm lookin' at you. Can't believe d-o got 'er done without scathe. Ella, this one was plain evil for an early-week pzl. Hahtoolah, thanx for walking us through this maze.

SHOO -- Am I the only one who thought of Shoo Fly Pie And Apple Pan Dowdy?

Self Check-Out -- I always have problems at Kroger. Usually is the nagging woman's voice, "Put the item in the bagging area..." Yesterday it was failure to recognize my credit card. I stuck it in the slot. Nope. I swiped it. Nope. I turned it over and swiped it. Nope. Finally the attendant came over, took my card, and tapped it on the screen. Bingo! Did you know those cards worked that way? Ain't technology grand? And frustrating?

I agree that this was tough for a Tuesday. It took me about 12 minutes to get down to two squares, on in the NE and one in the SE. at that point I had to resort to red strikethroughs and two alphabet runs in order to finish.

Good Morning, Crossword friends.

D-O: I always forget that I can just tap my credit card, but even when I remember, it doesn't always take on the first try.

May you all have a safe 4th of July celebration.

On the Fourth - Independence Day we gave to have bi visibility day? As soon as I saw that I trashed the puzzle. Call me a bigot but I think this day calls for a more patriotic theme.

Yep, toughie-Tuesday, for sure. By my count 16 names. ASMR? What? I did manage to FIR, but it too a loooong time, for a Tuesday, even for pokey ol’ unclefred. Thanx for the workout, ED, and thanx too for the, as always, excellent write-up, Hahtoolah. Now….back to sleep for a while.

FIW x 4, trouble around Dayton. fcMR? foLEY? BZZZZ! CREchENDO? BZZZZ! I'm starting to think that speling might not be my strongest suit.

I think that only 8 or 9 have achieved the EGOT for acting. More are for directing, writing, composing, or a combination. I'm lookin' at you, Mel Brooks.

I apologize if I'm repeating myself and being redundant too, but when you are in EL PASO you are closer to the Pacific Ocean than you are to Texarkana, TX. When you are in Texarkana, TX you are closer to the Atlantic Ocean than you are to EL PASO. Estado grande.

Thanks to Ha2la for another delightful tour. I'll bet that that cartoonist first toyed with drawing a couple of cantaloupes trying to elope. But my favorite was the analyst insect named Dr. B. Teul.

FIW. Pretty good puzzle for a Friday, oh wait, today is Tuesday!
Had never heard of Alvin Ailey or ASMR, and their crossing was downright mean. My WAG on the first letter was wrong.
And what is bi visibility day anyway?

Happy Fourth, everyone!

Took 6:01 today for me to bide my time, I guess.

Once again, I tend to agree with most of the prior comments (but not all).

All Trails is a useful app when hiking, but make sure you download the map BEFORE you set out, otherwise you may get lost when you lose internet connection. Otherwise, I hope you can use your compass app on your phone.

Ailey? Bai? Basra? Tesori?

Anyway, Happy Independence Day to everyone.

This was a little crunchy for a Tuesday but it had a lot in my wheelhouse so the perps helped in the harder spots. I'm a big Alvin AILEY fan, I've been able to go to one of his troupe's performances when it was touring. I'm a fan of BAI drinks. And my kids were in elementary when Bill NYE was getting popular for his kids science show
Lots of shout outs to my DH who is a REV and has many BIBs collected from his 20+ marathons, and uses the ALLTRAILS app. He is at a Firecracker 5K as we speak.

I learned of ASMR in this crossword awhile back, but since then I have seen it referred to in a number of other articles.

BASRA was in the news alot during the Iraq war as IIRC it is that country's only seaport.

Thanks Susan for the fun blog and Ella for the puzzle!

I'm with KS@8:03, crossing ASMR with Ailey, not fair. Got the BI theme quite quickly. Got ANDREW but had no Idea what or who KREWE was.

FIW "by" misspelling CRESCENDO. Rest of the puzzle was straightforward. Thanks to Ella and H2LH for their collaboration on today's offering

-The original Ocean’s 11 group were not THIEVES at first, they were all members of the 82nd Airborne.
-I was today’s years old when I learned the H from SYNCH gets dropped in SYNCER
-BIB #261 is no longer used in the Boston Marathon
-My teaching credo is, “I hear and I forget, I see and I remember, I do and I understand”. One sequence I frequently used was a) lecture on a topic, b) show a Bill NYE video on it, c) have the kids do a “hands on” lab.

Bi visibility day is that the same as any port in a storm?

Irish Miss said...

Good Morning:

This is definitely not a Tuesday puzzle. (Editor’s decision) Despite the numerous unknowns, I finished w/o help but I doubt that a beginner/newbie could say the same. And, in my personal solving experience, the frustration level was much, much higher than the almost non-existent enjoyment level. ASMR, Tesoro, and, as clued, Atari, Krewe, Map and Pip, not to mention the never before heard of Bi Visibility Day and Bai Lemonade, plus a tenuous familiarity with Bye Felicia, made for a slow, sluggish solve. When the themers are not mainstream knowledge, the solver is at a disadvantage from the get-go. Puzzles are supposed to be challenging, fair and fun and rewarding to complete and IMO, this one failed on all counts.

Thanks, Ella, and thanks, Hahtoolah, for the usual facts, and fun while frolicking through your review. Favorite cartoons today were the Shoo Fly, the Eloping Antelopes, and the Aliens. What am I missing with the significance of Dr. B. Teul, Psychiatrist? Hand up for knowing ERG, but only from previous puzzles but hands down on ASMR.

FLN

Anon T ~ Sorry to hear about your recent trip to the ER. Any explanation given for this second occurrence? Hope you're back to your normal good health.

Consistent with typical Tuesday level difficulty. Based on certain clues and answers I'm sure some won't BI/BY/BUY/BYE/BAI it. Narrowly escaped a DNF with __SMR crossed with __ ILEY. ("I'd like to BUY a vowel Pat"?). Tried an A as a WAG and it was correct. 🙂 Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response?, wha? ("Alexa/ Siri, I've backed myself into a corner constructing the puzzle, what's any clue that will fit A-S-M-R") 😠

Inkover: playfortime/BUYINGTIME

Surprised no one uploaded NSYNC singing "Bye, Bye, Bye"

"Aries" = Latin "RAM", CAPRA = latin/Ital. goat... Capricorn = "horned goat", (corn=horn). BTW, TESORI = "treasures".

Aren't "flat" IRONS for pressing wrinkled clothes? not "hair tools" (curling IRONS) though I do remember the 70s ironed hair craze... (A LUTE again so soon?) "GEE whiz" is less offensive than the sacred phrase it derives from "Cheez Whiz"

Happy Independence Day to those of you who feel there is nothing odd about today's offering which celebrates Bi Visibility Day! I suppose Varol supports Dershowitz' sexual taste more than the country which tolerates it.

How is it possible that the birth of the nation gets subsumed under the sexual predilections of these women? It is an insult to those who fought and died for the freedom of this nation to ignore the national celebration in favor their sexual natures. Ugh!

I can certainly understand why all the negative comments. Don’t know if the editors read the blog but this cw Was in keeping with the recent change in policy that clearly nobody seems to like. Question is WHY? Without getting too philosophical, I’ll just say, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”. We have lately been thinking of dropping the paper, since with the recent raise, it is now over $1;400 per year. The change in cw policy may be the finisher. We get our news off TV and NPR so I don’t any longer see the point keeping it. I truly wish these two ladies would stop tinkering with something that has been a part of our enjoyment for so long. Happy Independence Day! And thank you for the shout out, Susan! We DALES are a happy lot especially after having returned from a lovely seashore vacation in Rocky Point. I am already missing the CRESCENDO of the waves crashing against the shore. We stayed in a private home that my niece rented and so had the beach mostly to ourselves.

I have to say I also was expecting a more patriotic theme today. BY AND LARGE, though, this was a bit challenging to solve. I've never heard of BYE FELICIA and don't know to what it refers. Also, I don't know of ANDREW Garfield.

BIVISIBILITY DAY is self-explanatory though I did not know it existed.

CSO to my friend, Rev. Father ANDREW.

I'm familiar with BAILEY'S but not BAI LEMONADE. CSO to Lemonade.

Besides ORTEGA, EL PASO is also a brand of salsas and related taco flavorings.

I hope you all enjoy a relaxing and fun-filled 4th of July!

I zipped through the "gimmees," savored the long downs, and screeched to a halt at the crossing of -SMR and -ILEY. Since it is my sister's last name, I tried RILEY but it didn't work. So then I did an alphabet run and was dismayed that nothing seemed to work! So, *sigh*, I did a "check grid" and discovered that the letter I had put in at the cross of ANDRE- and KRE-E was wrong. Ah, so that's why the clock didn't stop. Hmm, so ANDRES wasn't right. How about ANDREI? Nope. How about ANDREY? Also nope. I honestly don't know why ANDREW didn't occur to me. Once it finally did occur to me, I went back and, boom, A worked at the cross of AILEY and ASMR. So THAT'S how that guy's name is spelled! (Coulda been pretty much anything, really, being a name and all that.)

Hahtoolah, I again thank you for your write-up.

A little late working on a puzzle that was so stupid I didn't bother to try to finish. If Patti want's to run off people she's definitely found a way. Insulting American Independence Day with TOTAL NONSENSE. Or maybe she's looking for an anonymous encounter on GRINDR.

For the puzzle I did do, I got stuck thinking RAT instead of RAM and had never heard of Jeanine TESORI. ASMR might have been WXYZ and it crossed the unknown AILEY. A DNF and why bother trying to solve it after you've been grossed out. The puzzle Sucked with a capital S. I guess a child pornography puzzle is in the offing.

On a personal note I live in an area that has a huge lesbian and gay population, probably only second to SanFran in density. DW's pickleball partner is a lesbian and Friday they are flying to Pittsburgh to play in the National Senior Championships. We've gone on vacation with them multiple times and are going to Pensacola for a week with them in August. We eat lunch with them at least once a week. But one constant theme I head from them is they think BI people are freaks and they absolutely HATE the 'trans' phonies who want to compete against women because they can't beat other men.

Happy FOURTH OF JULY.

Jinx in Norfolk said...

-T, so if a restaurant server takes my credit card, she (I would say "they" but there's already been enough outrage here for one day) can copy the NFC when she takes it out of sight to run it? Is the result a data file? Could she email or text the data from Norfolk to a confederate with another Flipper in, say, Boca Raton to encode a clone?

Please tell me that you can't do it just by walking by someone with a "tap" credit card in their wallet, at least without coming within "I'll slap your face" distance.

I liked the Brit comedian. I happened upon the Cowpens Battlefield in the middle of nowhere, South Carolina. Turns out it was a pivotal battle for us. My sister-in-law married a guy from there, so I asked him if his ancestors fought there. He replied "If they did, they were wearing red coats." Turns out his traceable family back that far were Loyalists.
