Theme: Aces are asses!

Our bi-weekly JW Friday takes phrases which include "ACE" and replace those letters with "ASS" to create new and fun fill. We have two changes in the first word and two in the last to preserve the consistency of the theme. The non-theme fill is predominately 5 letter words, but  we do have IT'S BAD, SALINE, SEIZES, SONATA, GOES LONG, MAN APART, IN ONE'S POWER,  PANAMA CANAL featuring Jeffrey's trademark multi-word fill. Not a Black Friday clue in the bunch but you should "sale" through this one.

FIR! I thought the central west coast was going to stump me, but once I realized 3d wasn't PAN-AM BRIDGE, that broke the mental logjam! I saw the gimmick early with AMAZING GRACE, and that helped with the other 3 themies. At first I thought it was changing CE to SS, and wondered how the reveal would handle it. I didn't see any reveal, but once I had them all, I saw the A, though unchanging, was still part of it too, so wrote my own reveal limerickily:

Jeffrey was losing, he again had to PASS;
He shouldn't play cards while smoking his GRASS!
The pot was so nigh,
The face cards were high!
And his stature descended from an ACE to an ASS!

Big Easy said...

Tryptophan? I was in be by 8:30. PANAMA CANAL was my first fill as for some strange reason I knew that one. ASS OF DIAMONDS gave away the theme and the rest was smooth sailing with the exception of a few unknowns. I didn't know whether 'Sciaparelli was a composer, painter, designer, or drug company (div. of G.D.Searle) so DIOR was all perps.

OP ART, which crossed OPS, was a WAG. O'DAY, TAL and DANAE were unknowns along with MAN APART, which could have been an Irish movie, ' A MAN O'PART'. SLANT and TILT were close today.

MINI- A friend had one in high school-1966-67 and we piled 4-5 people in it to go home one day. We were near the bottom on a small hill. It couldn't even get going up the hill from a dead stop so three of us walked to the top and got back in.

BASS- fiddle or a fish. We mockingly called people an ASS, pronounced ACE and they never caught on.

Lemonade714 said...

Big Easy, I know many who used the "ACE" pronunciation to mask the insult, which may be where Jeffrey got the theme idea, or at least I had that thought also.

I was in bed by 9:30

Morning, all!

Tried to sleep in this morning for a change. Turned off the alarm, gave strict instructions to my son to fend for himself, etc. Managed to make it all the way to 7:30, which for me is technically sleeping in, although not nearly as late as I had hoped. Ah well, at least I got a full 8 hours for a change...

Loved the theme today. Got it early and it certainly helped. Struggled with unknowns like TAL, DANAE, DIOR and EIN, but the perps eventually took care of them. Thought GNAW was a bit on the gruesome side, but maybe it is referring to an ear of corn after all. But then I kept thinking about pig ears I've seen for sale at pet stores...

Anyway, I hope everybody had a happy Thanksgiving and makes it back to the Corner safe and sound.

Thanks Jeffrey and Lemonade. I liked the STOAT adventure and I too scratched my head at Terminate:LAPSE.

Guessed CHANTILLY LASS having C-----LLYL--S. (It's easy to erase incorrect fill with the keyboard.) Got PASS THE FLOOR later and then ASS OF DIAMONDS after that. Looked at them a wee bit closer and that helped seeing GRACE from GRASS, then AMAZING GRACE.

Didn't know Vasarely's "Zebras" genre right off the bat, but with --ART it was easy to take a shot with OP.

Unknown DANAE clued as daughter of unknown Eurydice was ESP. Almost had a natick there because A MAN APART was also unknown, but that intersecting A was easy to guess.

Knew AC DC from the get-go. No, it's not "From the gecko"

SLANT came toot sweet for "Way of seeing things."

Initially wanted SSRS (Soviet Socialist RepublicS) for former union members, but union wasn't capitalized, and it also didn't fit with BORAX. It would have fit with ALIas instead of ALIVE, and DOMES.

I fell asleep before the start of the Bears/Packers game at 7:30 central, and woke up briefly just as Aaron Rodgers 4th and goal pass in the waning seconds sailed high and the Packers lost the game.

Good morning!

This was a Friday speed run. Except for TEXTS/TOMES and PARE/TRIM it was all a race to the bottom. The theme was obvious from the get-go, and that helped a lot.

Lemon, for "Terminate" = LAPSE, think of a magazine subscription.

DW calls the neighbor's fishing boat a BASS (rhymes with "base") boat.

No Black Friday binging for this guy. Today begins my self-imposed, month-long boycott of retail emporiums. I'll only patronize establishments which sell beer, but not jewelry. That eliminates the Wal-Marts, Targets, etc. which have in-store supermarkets.

Anonymous said...

Malaise = the BLAHS is incorrect. Discontent and boredom are not the same thing.

Lucina said...

Hello, friends!

WooHoo! Finally, I managed to sneak into Jeffrey's wave length and though after IRAE I had to hop around to find another toehold, eventually the south started coming together. I loved CHANTILLY LASS and that provided the theme for me.

Plenty of unknowns today, but they perped or WAGGED easily: ODAY, GOES LONG, MANAPART. DANAE was familiar but not that she was daughter of Eurydice.

SOOTS as a verb?

Since I have to change my lifestyle, eating is no longer the pleasant experience I've always enjoyed. But I realize it could be worse, much worse.

Have yourselves a delightful Friday, everyone! No shopping for me.

Yellowrocks said...

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving. We had a great time with my 3 sibs and in-law who live within one day's driving distance, although we missed my WV and IL sisters.
I enjoyed this puzzle and caught onto the theme early on. I certainly needed the theme to fill the west coast. I blush to say that I was stuck on NBC and never thought of ABC or ACDC. So I had -C-C. So easy, and yet I missed it.

Lucina, I sympathize with your BLAHS concerning your limited diet, especially on a holiday. The first months are difficult but things often look up with time as your A1C and weight go down. My brother and I who both have had diabetes for a while ate a regular meal yesterday. This morning my glucose reading was only 112. My weight was up, but it will return to normal by Sunday or Monday. So there is hope for you.

I think the BLAHS and MALAISE are quite similar. The dictionary has these definitons:
"The blahs, a feeling of physical uneasiness, general discomfort, or mild depression."
"Malaise, a vague or unfocused feeling of mental uneasiness, lethargy, or discomfort."
Note the inclusion of discomfort and uneasiness in both definitions.

Manac said...

Good morning all!
Hope everyone had an enjoyable holiday.
No drunken riots over here.

First theme answer I got was "Amazing Grass"
which really threw me because my mind went elsewhere.

My only stumble was the crossing of Danae and Man apart.

Technically at work right now.... if you consider sitting
on your duff waiting for an assignment work.
Don't think it's gonna happen the day after Thanksgiving.

Too bad I don't do the shopping thingy.

Irish Miss said...

Good Morning:

I enjoyed this puzzle and caught the theme early on. No real speed bumps but perps were necessary in a few areas. Soots is clunky but , overall, it was a fun solve.

Thanks, JW, for a Friday challenge and thanks, Lemony, for the detailed expo. Thanks, also, for sharing the photo of Charlotte and Harper, two little cuties!

My Thanksgiving celebration at my sister's was very nice, if a little on the noisy, hectic side. Today, I'll just enjoy the peace and solitude of my own home.

I don't know why I deserve all of these windfalls like yesterday's $5.9 million from the FBI and today's notification from the UN of another $5.5 million. On a more serious note, every time I receive one of these scam emails, I just wonder how many gullible people believe they're authentic and send the requested money and/or personal information. It's sad to think about it.

CED, I hope all is well with your Grandma.

Have a great day.

What a fabulous gimmick complemented by other great fill. I got the themes with minimal letters, esp. …LLY… Wow!

Musings
-Perfect lawns in our neighborhood are expected not amazing
-KC Athletics ASS OF DIAMONDS before moving to Oakland
-On almost all elevators you might think you PASS a certain FLOOR
-Does every comic have GAGS about airplane flights?
-Most physics teachers have made ANIONS flow with this battery.
-_ _ _ E _ _ L _ was first Apollo 11’s THE EAGLE command module
-I let my Carbonite subscription LAPSE and they terminated me
-It’s 20˚F out and my kitty needed a warm lap to PURR this morning
-I forgot to check the oil in a mower once and the engine did SEIZE up
-Not having things IN ONE’S POWER is another downside to being in a hospital
-IT’S BAD for this team
-My SALINE tube was the first in and last out in hospital
-SOOTED - It’s not in the stove pipe Colonel Blake!

Jazzbumpa said...

Hi gang -

Like the theme.

SOOTS? Sorry, no. Just no.

Didn't know where AC/DC was from, nor Eurydice's daughter so that section was a mess ---> DNF.

I have a perceptual difficulty that makes parsing muti-word downs a real problem. IN ONE'S POWER finally came together, but it was a struggle.

Speaking of BASS . . .

My daughter got what her kids had, so they stayed home. She was able to eat a little applesauce yesterday, but that wore her out so she had to back to bed. Brutal. I think it was a norovirus Nate brought home form school. Puts you down for about two days. Hit her hard and suddenly on Wed afternoon.

We had a great day with my son and his family. Bigger crowd coming on Sat for part 2. Everyone should be healthy by then.

I did not recognize the Lions.

We went to bed at halftime - Pack lost AGAIN !?! I have Randall Cobb on my fantasy team. His 74 yards didn't do a lot for me.

Cool regards!
JzB

Fun puzzle. Typical Friday crunchiness with several unknowns (WEES), but perpable. The only Danae I know is one of the daughters in the comic "Non Sequiter". Live and learn. SOOTS as a verb reminds me of a comic from my youth where Bugs and Daffy hide from Yosemite Sam in an old wood burning stove. When all is clear, they pop up and Bugs sings "Home, home in the range" and Daffy chimes in with "And it soots us fine". Thanks JW and Lemony.

IM, you have been incredibly lucky lately. Please buy me a lottery ticket.

CED, hope all is well with Grandma.

JzB, congrats on the Lions win yesterday. It hasn't been a good year for football at Rancho Bluehen. The Eagles suck, the Ravens suck, Flacco's on IR for the rest of the year, and the Bluehens equaled the worst record in school history. It's enough to drive a person to drink! See. There's an upside to every situation.

Enjoy Black Friday, everyone.

Great write-up, Lemonade. Thanks for the hard work you do!

Back today after working yesterday (no holiday for Canadians!) and really enjoyed this puzzle. The NW corner was the last to fall with AMAZING GRASS bringing a huge smile. Thanks Jeffrey and Lemonade (the Amazing Grace link was beautiful!).

Clue for EXES made me smile. Hand up to trying to fit SSRS into the grid. We've had the TOMES discussion recently and I tried AZUR before AQUA because we have had it recently also. WEES about SOOTS as a verb.

Enjoyed seeing SLANT and TILT, and OPART and Dadaism. I had Blues before BLAHS, Alias before ALIVE, and tried Coco before DIOR (until I realized the clue required a surname answer). Interesting PANAMA CANAL trivia.

Happy Black Friday to all. I am not going near a mall today!

CrossEyedDave said...

Sorry for the abbreviated post yesterday,
I tried to write the long version 3 times but
kept losing it due to a stuck keyboard key.

Granma (84) (DW's Mom) is an essential part of Thanksgiving,
not just because she brings the stuffing, creamed onions, parsnips (yuck!)
but because she makes the best gravy! (alas,DW never makes gravy...)

She had just mixed up a batch on top of the hot stove,
& then went to sit at the dining table. next thing we knew she was out on the floor!
I was putting another log on the fireplace to keep it going during dinner & did not
see what happened.

The girls immediately called 911 fearing a heart attack or stroke,
but after about 20 minutes she seemed fine, & must have just fainted.

Anyhow, the house was all lit up by the flashing lights of two police cars
and the EMS wagon.

The EMT took her blood pressure, tasted the stuffed mushrooms, & declared both fine...

TTP said...

Good one Jerome. Big Easy, did you recall TOMES easily enough today ? Manac, sounds like a paid day for rest. Don't fight against it. CED, is everything ok ?

As I went out to make DW's coffee earlier, I thought about an agreement lapsing and terminating. Lemonade, we must have been affected by yesterday's "Short stop" clue for pause, and had the pause:lapse (noun) definition ahead of the terminate:lapse (verb).

Not that it needs to be said to this august community, but to become an accomplished solver, especially late-week, one must always be on the qui vive for clue words that have alternate definitions or variants depending on the part of speech.

DW is off today and needs to buy a Christmas gift or two for the "store" at church before Sunday, so she's venturing out to the local mall and surrounding plazas. The "store" allows needy families to purchase these donated gifts at greatly reduced prices in a dignified manner. The church provides a list of suggested gifts by age groups, which I think is a good idea. The specificity of some the gift suggestions irks me a bit. Not just basketball shoes or athletic gear, but they should be Nike, Adidas, or Puma. Headphones (Beats by Dr Dre), and MP3 and iPod players. Mountain bikes. Oh well, it is what it is...

Loved that cover JzB, and am passing it on. My great niece and her daughter need to hear that.

Yea, who were those guys playing the Eagles ? Stafford, Johnson, Riddick and Tate alone earned nearly 100 points... Now I'm kicking myself for dropping Matthew in week 4.

Argyle said...

"The EMT took her blood pressure, tasted the stuffed mushrooms, & declared both fine..." gotta loved it.

The references to BASS (and the lady bass guitarist in the grid) may also be an explanation for the puzzle as ASS is pronounced ace...

Did a three team parlay yesterday with Detroit, Carolina and Chicago...sweet. It may not be irish Miss' luck but it was fun.

Bluehen @ 9:52. - Such a modest request! Why, with a total of $11.4 million 🏧 in "rewards", surely I can afford more than a lottery ticket. 💲💲💲 As soon as I receive the Nigerian "spoils", I'll make sure every Cornerite shares in my new-found wealth! 💰💰💰 😉

I agree that "SOOTS" is a stretch. Otherwise not bad for a Friday.

Hard to believe the Packers are so up and down.

Now for the Saturday puzzle…

Woohoo!Woohoo! I got a Friday Jeffrey Wechsler puzzle without cheating, and the day after Thanksgiving at that! Yay! What a great extra dessert on this lovely holiday. When I started to see all those three letter words I thought, my, it takes some sass to make "ass" a puzzle theme. But that made it even more fun. And great write-up, as always, Lemonade.

So thankful that Grandma is okay, Cross-Eyed-Dave.

Had a lovely Thanksgiving dinner with family last night--not home-cooked, I'm sorry to say, but bought from Gelsen's, which does a pretty nice 8 course meal for those who want to eat at home but just can't handle the cooking any more. Daughter-in-law brought a delicious pie, so it was a sweet meal--though I really missed Rowland.

Have a great weekend, everybody!

Good afternoon, folks. Thank you, Jeffrey Wechsler, for a fine puzzle. Thank you, Lemonade, for a fine review.

Found this puzzle in the Dayton Daily News this morning. It is the L A Times, it just does not say so. It also does not list the Constructor or the Editor.

Worked through it this morning. Then helped my son-in-law put up his Christmas lights. Then rested a while. Now, here I am.

Puzzle was a Friday level, IMHO. Got through it in fine fashion, after a couple hours of intense parsing.

Caught the theme with AMAZING GRASS. Helped with the rest.

Got IRAE easily.

Tried PASS LONG at 10D. GOES LONG appeared.

Tried EAGLE for 36A. EDYS gave me me GAY which gave me ENOLA. I never realized that B-29 was in the Smithsonian.

Liked the PANAMA CANAL trivia that was part of the clue.

Nice to see ADLAI Stevenson again. Big name in Illinois for over a century.

Tried MISS THE FLOOR for 54A. PASS worked after a bit.

Had a fine Thanksgiving at my daughter's yesterday. Still here. Still turkey in the fridge. Heading home tomorrow.

CED: hope your mother in law is doing fine.

See you tomorrow.

Good afternoon all,

I was perplexed when gags appeared...thanks Lemon for the write up and explanation. After reading the blog, I feel I am just beginning to fill in spots of my education that I somehow missed. So, thanks to you all.

CED, so glad that your story had a happy ending.

Lemon, thanks for posting the sweet picture of your treasures.

Misty, while doing yesterday's CW, I thought about you and how hard yesterday must have been without Rowland...sending you a hug.

No shopping for me. We went to see "Bridge of Spies" as we had just finished the book.

I miss Jeannie's recipes. She would have some great ideas for left over turkey.

It took several return trips today (mostly to reenergize my feeble brain) but I finally finished this Friday challenge in its entirety. Even the obscure stuff!

Thanks Jeffrey for the challenge and Lemon for the write up.

Lemonade, I really enjoyed your blog and the links. Your grandkids look great and are growing up, up, up. Its seems like just yesterday, when Charlotte was a baby in a delivery room. Time really does fly. Best wishes and may they all bring you joy and happiness. Mazel tov.

Darn, I've been Ace/ASS'd again by Jeffery - he WON. I finally TITT w/ 28d, 30d xing 35 & 39a empty. Close but no cigar... Thanks Jeffery, it was a fun.

Lem - beautiful dolls. I hope you lapped it up; there's the meaning of life right there.

My GRID'S a meSS: chars/burns b/f SOOTS, rebs b/f EXES, BLues, sHANTIieLASS.

My noon posting was the "break open" point for me. Before ENOLA GAY I had, maybe, 9 answers written in after 45 min (I swear I didn't look!). That B-52 cleared the north. I hope someone enjoyed the music - I'm listening to RUSH's Town Hall on SiriusXM 25 right now. The lead singer, BTW, is a child of Holocaust surviving parents.

CED - So glad to hear GRAN & the 'shrooms were both given the all clear. Learn the gravy recipe from her while you can - It took me years to reproduce Great Aunt Jess's pizzelles.

IM - It is sad that folks fall for the scam. In fact, I've read studies showing the language is dumbed down in those messages to weed-out the smarter folk. If it didn't work, they wouldn't keep sending the SPAM. Someone's losing HALF.

It's so good to see folks posting over the holiday who we haven't heard from for a year or so. Please post a few times a month so we know you're good.

Fav for today - Dad has 2 EXES and met wife #3 at bar called Chantilly Lace. So far (27 yrs), so good for him. I've been married longer than he has, I've been married longer than he has, I've been... - in a row :-)

Cheers, -T
