Hi, folks. C-Moe here providing you with today's blog. Sorry I've been OUT for awhile. Packing for the big move has taken most of my free time, and then - to add my stress - I contracted gOUT a couple weeks ago, and since it settled into my right thumb joint, I've not been able to do a lot of typing or solving puzzles on a computer. But through rest and the proper medication, my abilities returned, so here I am.
Taylor Johnson provides us with some interesting word play today. The puzzle was OK, but didn't make me smile or laugh. It wasn't difficult to see how the reveal fit into the entries; wished it (the reveal) was clued differently, as "Peace!" for "I'M OUT" wasn't that clever. I usually think of "I'm out" to mean "I'm leaving". And the only entry I thought clever was the SEDENTARY ROCK, which also had the "IM" well-hidden. But the editor(s) may have felt otherwise.
Actually, this puzzle could just be a CSO to our own Irish Miss!!
The puzzle DID have a couple of clever/fresh entries in SOFT PRETZEL and PANTOMIMIST, but ER DOC and RE-INK seemed weak for a Friday offering, as did the twenty-one 3-letter entries (one of Irish Miss' pet peeves) and all of the easy clues. So here's the grid, and then off to the rest of the clues/entries

1. "More or less": SORTA. This was SORTA a good puzzle, and then I saw this at 8-Down. (Much, casually:) LOTSA. I think only one entry ending in -A should be acceptable

40. Etching supply: ACIDS. Another easy Friday clue
41. Curly-tailed dog: AKITA. Never "met" one of these dogs ... Japanese, I believe ... they drink AKIRA beer I hear
42. Malek of "Mr. Robot": RAMI. This was my lone error in today's puzzle (look at the grid I posted above). It formed my lone Natick, too, with (43-Down. Musical introduction?): ACT ONE.
44. Synchronicity: UNISON. This is what I thought of with Synchronicity, and POLICE did fit!
50. Golf stroke that can be practiced in a hallway: PUTT. I've been known to do this. HG? Boomer? TTP?
51. Charitable: GIVING. Over my adult life I have been quite GIVING/charitable, but I tend to support/GIVE to those organizations that use my donation at or above 90% toward the cure/purpose

What happened to the challenging Friday puzzles in the vein of Jeffrey Wechsler? As Moe pointed out, much of the cluing was Tuesday level, at best, and the theme was not of late-week caliber, either, IMO. Throw in a bunch of three letter words and add some unknown pop culture references and you have an unsatisfactory and uninspiring solve.
Thanks for your efforts, Taylor, and thanks, Moe, for a fair and honest critique and your always welcome puns and humor, not to mention the big CSO. Good luck with your ongoing moving chores. It’ll be worth all the hassle when you’re settled in your new home.

After a SORTA slow start in the NW I picked up speed and went back and finished after I noticed the missing IM in SUPER POSE. (I purposely didn't read the clue for 37A), A nice puzzle with fair clues. DEN JACKET was the last fill with the three A&E clues for unknowns SID, REN, & ALADDIN. ASL. RAMI, AMAL was also filled by perps.
I didn't understand the 'Cried for cider' clue until ANAGRAM was almost filled.
GUAVA was all perps.
UTNE- seen it before in puzzles but don't you love it when supposedly superior (in their minds) hi-brow publications try to tell you what they think you should know. But they have a hard task if they want to "Cure Ignorance" because there's LOTSA ignorance out there, especially among elected officials.
If IM OUT, shouldn't PANTOMimIST have been tossed, or the northeast reworked?

CSO- An entire puzzle dedicated to IM. Hi there.
Solved this in Wednesday time. Names were easily perped in. I quickly solved the theme answers only to discover with the reveal that IM could be added to them.
Wouldn't the Akita prefer a Japanese beer, Kirin or Asahi? I believe Akira is an American IPA made by Monkey Beer.
I think that in the 1970's PEACE had many meaning including good-bye or I'm outta here.
I loved getting soft hot pretzels from the side walk vendor in my youth. Either I have changed or the recipe has changed. Now I only mildly appreciate an occasional soft pretzel. I prefer hard pretzels.

I found this to be a workout, but finished and saw the IM OUT theme (it took a while to see IM AGE). I agree that Im out is a weak match for Peace. Peace out, maybe.
And then we had the IM included in 11D PANTOMIMIST, which wasn’t a themer, but was a long fill.
But I arrived here to discover that I FIWed. I had issues in the NE corner, because my “annoyed sound” was Tsk. That made my “withering look” a Stare (which I thought was not very withering). HINDI finally forced me to GLARE, but I had a Paper cut instead of UPPER. The resulting Psh sound and Aliers tools made no sense, but I packed it in at that point.
How many more rappers do I need to know?
CODA was in a Jeopardy clue last night; I got ASL immediately today.
Kraken was unknown. Perps filled it. (I see it is also a Bitcoin platform, as well as a mythical sea monster).

Struggled to a FIR in 30. Several W/Os, several DNKs made for the struggle. I agree w/ CMOE that “peace: I’m out” is pretty lame. I did see the “im out” theme with the very first theme clue, but somehow that didn’t seem to help with the rest of the CW. Thanx TJ for your time and effort to create this CW for my entertainment. And thanx CMOE for your terrific write-up. I hope you are not having the same frustrations with the American medical system that I am! I am FUMING at the unbelievable inefficiency of our entire medical system!! The ACA was passed, what, ten years ago? Twelve years ago? Part of it was requiring medical records from that time forward to be computerized so they could, with the patient’s permission, be shared between medical offices. After 10 or 12 years, medical offices are STILL not doing it. I got referred to a gastroenterologist for a colonoscopy. They gave me an 11 page form to fill out!! EVERYTHING on that form is already in the computer at my primary care doctor’s office! But they said they couldn’t just have me sign a form to transfer the file! “This is the way we do it! You need to fill out the form!” Which I did, with everything I needed to look up, I spent about 1/2 hour on it. Then watched one of their employees dutifully type everything from the paper form into their computer!! They referred me to an outpatient surgical center, which EMAILED ME A THIRTY PAGE FORM TO FILL OUT!! ALL of which my internist already has….and the GI doc now has….but no, I had to spend almost an hour once again providing the SAME INFORMATION YET AGAIN!! No wonder American health care is the most expensive….AND far from the best….on the planet. And no wonder I have high blood pressure!!! Why can’t these offices work together????

A-T: I too many years ago I had a subscription to The Utne Reader, as it was known. It contained many fascinating articles by great writers, then something happened, it became preachy and didactic, so I gave it up.
Star Trek's "Peace y'all I'm out" answers that nit well. Though the puzzle was unusually easy for a Friday, did it deserve all the tetchy nits? I was happy with it.
Chairman Moe, moving and buying and/or selling a house, especially the closing, are nerve wracking. I hope you soon can settle in and feel some peace. And good luck with the gout.

Well, with all of his UPPER class IDEAS, I figured the protagonist of this puzzle was a college LAD, maybe one attending ETON, where he might have worked together in UNISON with his ROOMIE.
Bet they had a lot of OH FUN together on the weekends, wearing their DEN JACKETS and going to movies and plays and eating SOFT PRETZELS, and dip with GUAVA, and cakes with ICING on them, while watching ACT ONE.
Hope their supervisor didn't get MAD AT them and GLARE at them, and ended up GIVING them a hard time if they came back to the dorm late. He'd better watch out that the guys don't write a nasty ODE on him in the college paper. That could end up GIVING him some ANGST.

Jinx @ 6:31 (again) I just re-read the clue "Kracken" and saw that SEA could also be the abbr for SEAttle, home of the NHL Kraken. I used to be a bigger hockey fan but I don't watch it as much nowadays
WC (again) Glad to know your niece is a fellow Pitt Panther. Was happy to see Dan Marino at the ACC Championship game last year supporting the boys. I'm sure he was pleased to have Kenny Pickett break several of his records, as Pickett is a cool dude. Odds are that he'll be starting for the Steelers before the end of the NFL season, but personally I'd rather them wait until after getting/drafting a better group of OL
I zipped through this puzzle pretty quickly. The IM OUT reveal in the center made it easier to solve the answers with the missing IMs, except for that SEDENTARY ROCK which I didn't want to accept at first because IMSEDENTARY ROCK, SEDENTARYIM ROCK, SEDENTARY IMROCK, and SEDENTARY ROCKIM didn't make sense to me. I failed to see the SEDENTARY to SEDIMENTARY connection.
As for the rest of the puzzle, mostly SORTA kinda MEH, filled with LOTSA drek such as REN, ERDOC, INC, SID, UGH, and AMI, to name a few. But, as the Chairman pointed out, the puzzle did have a couple of clever/fresh entries in SOFT PRETZEL and PANTOMIMIST, to which I would add ANAGRAM.

Unclefred, I totally empathize and agree with you about health care, especially since personally witnessing/experiencing practices that are dictated by "policy" or "protocol" rather than by what the patient needs, prefers, is okay with, is not okay with, and so on. Similarly to you, yesterday I not only filled out and signed forms, I also was asked and I orally answered many of the same questions to (I counted them) four people: a receptionist, a nurse, a technician, and a doctor. Oh, and speaking of policy, I learned it is policy (at least in the radiology department) to literally "document a failure"! When I asked what that means, I was told it means they are not allowed to perform procedure X (which best meets the needs of the patient) until they first try procedure Y and it fails (such as trying to fit a fat person into a 60 cm opening when you already know, through simple math of by actual measurement, that the patient's rotund body simply won't fit.) Stupid stupid stupid. So, is the "true" explanation found by following the money? Does the for-profit hospital make more money by doing the procedure twice by deliberately choosing that the first try will, by definition, fail so they have to do it again in a different way that won't fail?

I'm stoked. Just replaced my laptop keyboard for the third time in the last three weeks, and this one works just as it should ! Doing anything on this computer has been a real pain.

I agree about all the redundancy in medical forms. It always rankles to repeat in writing and orally every detail. I did have one provider that let me mark "no changes." Aah! Very rare.
Alan's group home is big on following every rule to the very letter, instead of being logical. Alan had pink eye which the doctor said was likely to infect the other eye soon, so he prescribed drops for both eyes. Good. But he absent mindedly recommended warm compresses for the original eye and didn't mention the other eye. When that eye healed the group home continued the compresses on the good eye and would not use them on the bad eye because they had no doctor's orders. It is only water, so when Alan came for the weekend I treated the second eye with compresses, too. Over the years I have always done what was reasonable and the doctor's have trusted me and even applauded me.
C-Moe - I didn't SEA SEAttle either. My last brand new house was circa 1990 in Phoenix. During a meeting of the Arizona Yacht Club (yes, there is such a thing) a few of us were chatting about our places. When I mentioned that I lived in a new house, one of the guys said "Jinx, I think you mean that you SLEEP in your new house. You LIVE in Home Depot." He was nearly right.
My guess is that malpractice insurance requirements drive a lot of the duplication. And that the minimalist-first approach comes from government over regulation. I remember that the new coding requirements that came with the ACA drove the docs crazy and led to a lot of incorrect billing. I know for a fact that you have to draw the clock as part of every physical because Medicare requires it. No waiver, even for my already-diagnosed-with-Alzheimer's wife. Cruel.

I'm not sure. I haven't had GUAVA jam since I left San Luis Rey in 1969. However, I'll make an effort to look for it. Ironically, a place that sells homemade jam (they specify it) is ACE Hardware. They have a shelf of it behind the cash register so I'll check next time I go there. They also have some really great greeting cards. Trader Joe's might have it too. Time for a quest. I'll let you know.
Today while on my way to shop for a dress I got a flat tire. What an ordeal! First, waiting for AAA at high noon. Remember, it gets to the 100s here. Finally, it came and I drove to Pep Boys where I waited another hour or more. Finally I got my tire but no dress.
The reason I went shopping is that I like to wear dresses to church and I have, um, outgrown much of my clothes. Time for dieting, methinks.

I am happy (well, sort of) to see the Cornerites' long-suffering opinions about the medical record system.
An alternative system is run by Kaiser Permanente. One data entry, which is accessible to EVERY Kaiser doctor, PA, RN, lab tech. usually within one day. I lived inside it for close to 40 years, and now that I have been forced out of it by CalPERS, I have experienced the utter chaos that you all lament.
It is like a collection of medieval fiefdoms, some larger, some small -- NONE of which talk to each other. Even something simple like a routine CBC, doesn't always get resulted to my PCP, nor to the oncologist or urologist or to anyone on the outside. We won't mention X-rays, MRIs, colonoscopies, which seem to be marked 'TOP SECRET ROENGEN -- NO FORN -- EYES ONLY.' I just grab all the medical info I can, put it in a file, and ask my PCP, "Oh, did you see this" Often he says, "No."

Better that the tire blew now instead of next week when I will be on the road headed for the coast. Next weekend is when the annual Believe Walk takes place to raise funds for breast cancer of which my late niece died. I can no longer walk the 3.2 miles but I'll be there for moral support and the handouts. The local grocery chain sponsors the Walk and provides some nice souvenirs in the form of fruit, candy, drinks and other food. Also practical items like shopping bags (cloth), etc. Every year they surprise us.
