Good morning!

Overslept by almost an hour this morning. Zipped through this one. What makes Toledo HOLY? Finished in good time with no real unknowns. Thanx, Emet and Boomer. (Is there really a team called the Guardians?)

FIR, but erased RtS for RDS.

LA sports announcers call the team "the Halos".

I sent TYCO a lot of money for HO train gear in my ute.

The ORANGE BOWL Queen is abducted in Carl Hiaasen's Tourist Season. Jimmy Buffett's Ballad of Skip Wiley "documents" the hilarity.

Congrats to the USA for their fine victory over the rest of the world (except Europe) in golf's President's Cup.

FLN - You mean Al Bundy isn't real? I'll have to call someone to complain. I sure am glad that Don Ameche invented the telephone!

Thanks to Emet for the fun, Monday-easy puzzle, and to Boomer for the usual romp through it.

Marvelous Monday CW, thanx EO! FIR in 11, which is good for me, and kinda the time I used to do Mondays before I started getting worse at CWs. W/Os OHNO:UHNO, SEEYA:PEACE. I even got the theme today. Overall very nice. Boomer you are right on track for your usual write-up’s, terrific as usual, thanx.

Took me 4:44 today to get off the leash.

It's a Monday. Not much else to say.

The timing of today's 37A "Out of favor with one's partner ...": IN THE DOG HOUSE, made me laugh. Reminds me of yesterday and a certain someone.

Happy Birthday, Dennis.
Belated Happy Birthday to Teri.

Thanks, Boomer. The Minnesota Golden Gophers are looking pretty good. They are my pick to win the West Conference of the B1G. I think they'll move up from #21 when the new rankings come out this week. P.J. Fleck is a really good coach. Row the Boat !

FIR. It's Monday, so not much effort needed. I thought the theme was a stretch with ball and bone, but what do I know!

Good Morning:

Cute theme which I needed the reveal to see which, due to placement, was early on. Oikas and Luca was unknown but perps were fair. I liked the Hug/Ugh crossing but not the awkward Sourer. All in all, an easy and fun Monday solve.

Thanks, Emet, for a pleasant start to the week and thanks, Boomer, for your indomitable spirit and Boomer humor. Hope the transfusion kicks in and perks you up!

Happy Birthday, Dennis, hope you’re happy and healthy. Semper Fi.

FLN

Belated Happy Birthday wishes to Teri. ๐ŸŽ‚๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽˆ๐ŸŽŠ

DO @ 6:30 ~ The Guardians were formerly known as the Cleveland Indians, and the Commanders were formerly known as the Washington Redskins. The original team names were considered by many to be racist and demeaning.

Have a great day.

Have a great day.

Irish Miss said...

Oikas and Luca were unknown and please ignore the duplicate great day wishes. Vax fuzziness still hovers, apparently.

desper-otto said...

IM, thanx for the enlightenment on those team names. News to me. Oops, OIKAS would've been an unknown, had I noticed it. Not very Mondayish.

Musings
-A USUAL Monday puzzle
-LUCA Brasi “sleeps with the fishes”
-The store bought it for $20, marked it up to $80 and then RETAGGED it at $40 for it ½ off sale.
-Nebraska has eschewed gambling for years and all that money crossed into Iowa and Missouri. This weekend, the Husker state opened its first casino in Lincoln with hundreds of SLOT machines and at least five other cities are on the cusp of doing the same thing.
-I doubt any of those SLOTS will take a PENNY, last or not.
-ADMIT it, then you don’t have to remember what you said.
-My partner has used the same golf TEE for weeks and will move heaven and earth to find it.
-JIBE, Jive and Gibe
-Emet Ozar’s web page

I wasn't familiar with Oikos Greek yogurt, but the perps were kind, as is usual for a Monday. Other than that, no problems. FIR, so I'm happy.

What is "croque-monsieur" doing as the first down clue on a Monday for the simple answer HAM? ๐Ÿคจ. Otherwise a typical first-puzzle-of-the-week with the USUAL suspects: ODE, ACAI, EWER, TEE etc. I guess the theme is "things found in a dog house". (A mask, flower, orange and joke book..๐Ÿ˜„l)

Inkover: rise/STIR (usually a recipe related clue)

OIKOS, (the rival Chobani factory is just south of us in New Berlin NY)...oh no..UHNO again, and yes we all know the humerus is the FUNNY BONE. ๐Ÿคญ. At first thought it said "College application" ๐Ÿ™„..OOF (c'mon). More sour cuz SOURER is so hard to say ๐Ÿ™Š

"Mom, (CW, MAHI) fish tacos for dinner again!?"

I ADMIT, _____ right.. it's a jug with a wide mouth....EWER.
Turns around the race course....LAPSE
Thus the balloon collapsed, but where did the ___? ...ERGO
Rock musical with naked rabbits..."HARE"
Frequent AAA request...NEATO

✈ My daughter Catherine and I off to visit my soon to be 90 y o cousin (this Christmas so my aunt named her Carol) in Raleigh NC for a few days. Takes care of her own house inside and out and is still the best cook in the family.

I was going to say “perfect CW” then to my horror I noticed I had glob instead of GLOP, ergo beace instead of PEACE. Never saw my error.

Regardless, fun theme and CW, perfect Monday morning puzzle.

A front is coming through to cool us off and to keep Ian away from us. I’m sorry Florida will suffer, but in south Louisiana we’ve paid our dues so to speak and since we’re still recovering after 2 years, we need a respite.

Have a nice and safe day everyone.

Thank you Emet for a slightly crunchy (to me) Monday FIR. Got off to a slow start in the NW as I couldn't picture the Angels cap, but ACAI gave me HAM and then the rest of the pieces fell into place. Teri tried picturing an Angel and got HALO immediately. She even knew what a "croque-monsieur" was.

And thank you Boomer for the USUAL Monday groaners.

Some favs:

13A ACAI. A constructor's delight with a V/C ratio of 75%

29A MSRP. Last Monday we completed a 4 month ordeal purchasing a new car. Nowadays this should be called the MMMP (Mfg's Mandatory Minimum Price). Consider yourself lucky if the dealer even deigns to order you a car and if you don't pay too much over MSRP. We ended up buying a Toyota above the trim level we wanted because it was the next one scheduled for delivery.

68A SLOT. Couldn't figure out the tie into EMAIL, but eventually it perped.

1D HAM. Fancy smancy name for a ham and egg sandwich. And what does it have to do with a lawn game played with mallets and hoops? Teri says there's also a "croque-madame" version. Make DW one and you'll stay OUT OF THE DOG HOUSE.

4D OIKOS. I knew it was in there somewhere, but it took awhile to surface.

9D SUGAR PLUM. Nice pic Boomer. Here's where we all heard it first.

54D NEATO. Do people still say this?

Cheers,
Bill

Husker @9:03 AM I bet it has nickel slots though. I plunked $5 dollars in nickels into one in Vegas, and on the last plunk they all came tumbling back. Left them all for the maid (with some additional green of course).

Marvellous Monday. Thanks for the fun, Emet and Boomer.
Officially a FIW today, but I did see the cute DOGHOUSE theme (but only with the reveal). At first I saw the F and B at the two middle themers, but the M and B, O and B of the others squashed that thought. Interesting that the doghouse items all started with a B.

I messed up at 1A. Don’t you just hate that! This Canadian thought it was the Health Care Act, and I entered Mikos instead of OIKOS (was I thinking of the Greek island Mykonos?). HHLM made no sense, and I did not remember that Angel’s HALO. ALAS,

I noted UH NO and UGH.
We had an O-game with HALO, UH NO, RIO, COO, LOO, TYCO, NACHO, NEATO, ERGO.

PEACE meaning was similar to the Peace Out discussion we had the other day.

CSOs to INANEhiker and Tinbeni (ICE).

Happy Birthday Dennis.

Wishing you all a great day.

The LAST PENNY produced by the Canadian mint was on Feb 4, 2013. They are still legal tender, but not seen in actual use. Cash transactions are rounded up or down to the nearest nickel.

Musings 2
-I am subbing today and just talked about fractions. I told them how Burger King tried to fight the quarter pounder by selling a third pounder. It failed because most people thought 1/3 is smaller than ¼.
-My DW just called with a computer question and I solved it just using iMessage! Three brownie pts!
-Waseeley – The only time I played a slot machine was a nickel machine. I got a cup full of nickels and entertained myself for an hour. When I got done the cup that held the nickels was filthy!
-It was incredibly INANE for Nebraska to fight off gambling. The number of cars with Nebraska plates in Iowa casino lots will definitely diminish.

Fun puzzle, great write-up, Boomer, hand raised for misreading "College" in the clue for glue. :-)

Yellowrocks said...

Easy Monday. Neato theme. I think a dog could likely have his ball and bone inside his doghouse along with his water bowl and bed.
Greek yogurt is all the rage. Oikos is well known here, but I have not tried it.
Freezer cubes/ice. Where is Tinbeni?

Why do we say Holy Toledo? One take on this:
"In the 20s and 30s, Toledo was a sanctuary for gangsters. They made an agreement with the police that if the police would leave them alone, they would leave Toledo alone. Since this provided a sanctuary, the gangsters called the city "Holy Toledo."
Anon T and DW, happy anniversary.

Hi Y'all! Thank you, Emet, for a fun & fast puzzle. Thank you, Boomer, for tickling my funny BONE.

PEACE: all perps. Such corruption of a lovely, serene word.

The BOWL should stay outside the DOGHOUSE so it wouldn't spill all over the BEDding.

Jinx: had to laugh. I just finished reading Hiaasen's "Tourist Season".

HBD Dennis. Miss you.

I liked this puzzle except for SOURER, which left a, um, sour taste in my mouth. I think the first time I ever heard of a croque monsieur was from a Jacques Pรฉpin cooking show years ago.

If I recall, yesterday someone pointed out that MAHI is rarely, if ever, used in a fish taco, which is usually made with cod or some sort of white-fleshed fish. LW has used tilapia and even red snapper, which turned out quite nicely.

LW and I used to enjoy watching an Italian TV show called Inspector Montalbano, starring LUCA Zingaretti. He never ate a croque monsieur but he did eat some arancini (translated as croquettes) with great enthusiasm on a fun episode.

Gotta go.

desper-otto said...

I might be misremembering, but it seems Dave Garroway, an original member of the NBC "Today" show, used to end his broadcasts by raising his hand and saying "Peace."

Yellowrocks said...

LIU "Anyway, in the case of "sour", you can say "sourer" and "more sour". Both are fine. Many people might avoid "sourer" because as Alexa noted, the "er-er" sound is awkward, at least in my accent. But certainly everyone should agree that "sourest" is pretty common: "That's the sourest strawberry I've ever eaten."

Hi All!

Thanks Emet for the puzzle. I had Snoopy on my mind the whole time.

Thanks for the expo Boomer. There are many rookie cards I wish I had but I did find a Biggio in my (Army) Bro's collection.

WOs: N/A
ESPs: Not that I noticed until reading Boomer - OIKOS & SUE are two clues I missed.
Fav: RIO stuck Duran Duran in my head...
//I think I need to take up sailing, Jinx.

Hand-up for thinking SAT(?) at CollAge until the PENNY dropped.

SOUR-er-er-er... I don't think you can say 'more sour' more stumblier.

I've seen the programming tapes for SLOT machines. I'll just play Roulette (best odds in the house) with a croque-monsieur and a Bloody Mary.

Having had two girls in Ballet, I can hear Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy just from its mention.
//I must have sat through >20 performances over the years. There should be a "Your Kid is on Now" App so you can go in, watch, and then leave.

I mentioned The Maker's channel yesterday. Over Discord, boss-man turned me on to Netflix's Making Fun. It's funny but, man, do they waste a lot of wood (and my time).

Happy Birthday Dennis and Teri!

PEACE, -T
