Notes from C.C.:

1) Happy 65th Birthday to Lemonade, who has been guiding us through Friday puzzles since March 2010. Despite his eye problem and health issue, he never gives any puzzle a short shrift. He enhances my appreciation for every Friday puzzle with his passion, knowledge & wit.

Lemonade & John Lampkin

2) Happy 65th Birthday to the very knowledgeable & modest Vidwan as well! Hope you successfully renewed your driver's license.

3) As Montana (Darlene) mentioned yesterday, she flew to Denver and celebrated her birthday with her granddaughter, who was 2 yesterday.

Morning, all (and Happy Birthday to Lemonade & Vidwan)!

Finally back from an extended family vacation. We went to San Francisco to see the sights and visit with my brother and sister-in-law and their many kids (who live in San Jose) and my sister (who lives in Paolo Alto). A good time was had by all, but the jet lag is a bear...

Wish I had lots of positive things to say about the puzzle today, but I don't. Blame it on the aforementioned jet lag, I guess. My puzzle didn't have circles, so I had no idea what was going on until I got to the theme reveal. Neither SOFA TABLE nor SOFT CAPSULE nor SOY CANDLE are things I've ever heard of (although all were inferrable with enough help from the perps). And I almost turfed it at the crossing of OLE and ELKA.

I knew that SMEE was Captain Hook's right hand man from "Peter Pan" but I never knew what the name of the ship was. Live and learn.

Man, I wish I could go back to bed, but the little guy starts school today and I have to go back to work...

Happy Tuesday everybody!

I wouldn’t say today’s offering was UBER easy - it was just right for a Tuesday puzzle….

Do-overs = STRAD for AMATI, MINE for LIFE, SAFE for BASE (right idea, wrong word), and, of course, QATAR for DUBAI….

Also wanted ABORIGINES for Sydney natives, but it was too long….

Chi Trib site showed the circles for the SOLE clues, how about other sites…?

Think we’ll ever get a puzzle with Say, SEE, Sigh, SEW and Sou….? Y not…?

Is it just me or does WOBEGON seem to be missing a couple of “E”s…?

Lots of August birthdays at the Corner! HBD to Lemon and Vidwan – not only the same birthday, but the same birth date – nice!

Oh, and welcome back Barry!

Finally, speaking of SOLE food, here’s the background music from that non-existent Harlem restaurant in the 1973 movie “Live and Let Die,” the Fillet of Soul….

Welcome back BG, and a fishy puzzle for the day. Enjoyed the theme and basically sailed through except for SLIDER which got me thinking of the pitch not the base runner. English is such a confusing language.

Off to start my 66 th year. Many happy returns to my twin Vidwan.

Hi Y'all! Another week with two of Gail's puzzles, but with Bruce this time! Good one, guys, but a bit tricky. I couldn't get going on the west upper 2/3rds of this. Did the rest then came back up the west side and got 'er done. Thanks, Argyle!

New: Alfre!?

Welcome back, Barry. Your dedication in spite of jet lag is appreciated. Glad you had a good time.

Happy birthday, Lemonade & Vidwan, you young whippersnappers. I always enjoy the contributions of both of you.

C.C., If you and Boomer have a good relationship with his son, you need to tell the son about the TIA since Boomer won't. You may need his help in the future and the son might be upset if he wasn't told about these health concerns. I know this isn't an easy decision, dear lady.

When my husband had chest pains and wouldn't go to the cardiologist, it took both our sons and myself literally backing him in a corner (fighting mad) and insisting he get in the car for the trip to the doctor. He was mad and wouldn't speak to me the whole 3 hour trip, but it was the right thing to do. We at least knew we had done all we could for him, and we had professional help for the big bad medical event.

Morning everyone,

Happy birthday, Vidwan, Montana, and former Connecticut resident, Lemonade. LaLa Linda, hope your health issues are quickly cured.

Only struggle today was 47D. ALFRE. Total unknown and likely to be forgotten by noon. Trusted the across clues which were all solid.

No circles which I do not like as a rule. Thank you Merriam-Webster.

I can't even make a Wag as to how many moons it's been since I've seen SOAP BUBBLES. Relaxing, hot showers get this guy ready to face the day.

I'm going to be an occasional poster for a while. Rotator cuff issues having a big affect on my normally sunny personality! So far I've been in Phys Therapy, but it;s not going well. Therapist treating me like a Senior citizen and it's really ticked me off. Got an appointment in a week or so with a shoulder guy...hope a shot of cortisone will help. Did for my wife when she had similar issues.

Good Morning, Argyle and friends. I thought this was a bit of a challenge for a Tuesday. I know I am in trouble when I can't immediately get the 1-Across clue. The B in Base was just about the last to fall, as even the 1-Down clue gave me trouble.

Thank goodness for the circles in my paper. It helped with the SO and LE fills, which then shed enough light to get the "Stuffing."

This is probably one of HENRI Rousseau's most recognizable paintings.

I love Betty White, but never heard of ELKA or Hot in Cleveland.

Happy Birthday to two of my favorite bloggers, Lemonade and Vidwan. I hope you both have very special birthdays.

Hello Puzzlers -

I vote for being impressed with the puzzle. The symmetry with the long theme fills must have been hard to arrange. It seemed on the easy side, but in line with a Tuesday.

The phrase "for Goodness' sakes" seems common, but I've assumed it make more sense grammar-wise to say "for Goodness' sake". Relatedly, there are signs posted along MA highways reminding drivers "...take a break, for safety sake". These are large, expensive, permanent road signs, and it surprises me that a grammar blunder made it all the way through to their production.

Bilge water makes me smile remembering the con artist aboard Huck Finn's raft who passes himself off as the long-lost Duke of Bridgewater. His companion kept bungling the name, calling him Bilgewater.

Always loved the name Lake Wobegon.

Good morning!

Welcome back, Barry, and felicitations to our birthday twins.

This one turned into a six minute romp during my REIGN (my time on the throne). My only misstep was getting cocky and inking SOFA THROW without checking the perps.

My newspaper had circles, and yes, they were in the right places.

I remember ALFRE Woodard because with a name like that a) you expect her to be a man, and b) you expect a second W in her last name.

Abejo said...

Good morning, folks. Thank you, Gail and Bruce, for an excellent puzzle. Thank you, Argyle, for the fine review.

First, welcome back, Barry G. Enjoy your write-ups.

Happy Birthday to Lemonade and Vidwan. Enjoy both of your commentaries.

My puzzle does not have circles. I started before the newspaper came and did it on cruciverb via the IPad.

Seepage at sea was easy, BILGE. That helped with the rest of the NW.

The entire top of the puzzle was quite easy, as well.

Did not know ALFRE. Only 5 perps and I had it.

SOFT CAPSULE was easy since I take 8 of those a day when in Pennsylvania. 4 Flax Seed Oil and 4 Coconut Seed Oil.

Wanted BRINE PICKLE for 11D, but would not fit. SOUR PiCKLE worked.

Also, did not know ELKA. The NE horizontals helped.

Slider's goal for 1D reminded me of Chicago's famous hamburger, the White Castle SLIDER. I really like them.

Hot today in NE Illinois. Need a little rain.

See you tomorrow.

I was close to finishing today. I thought snuggling on a couch was NOT COMFY and I didn't know how to spell ALFRE. (I had ELFEE so I had AMATI and HENRI wrong too.)

Martin said...

Oh and the clue "That's ----" was a bit vague. I tried VILE and NICE before I got LIFE.

And of course my first attempt at the final theme fill was FILET OF SOLE but that was proven wrong by the perps.

Good morning everybody, and welcome to Tuesday!

Welcome back Barry G. It was odd not seeing your name at the top of the heap.

Happy birthdays to Lemony and Vidwan! May you have a wonderful year!

I had the printed Trib and the circles were neatly in place.

I have the same comments on ALFRE as most of yu all do.

I liked 63A: Pay Dirt: ORE.

Have a great day everybody!

Good morning Argyle, C.C. et al.

Happy birthday to two of my favorite bloggers. And the same birth date, too!
.:*~*:._.:*~*:._.:*~*:._.:*~*:._.:*~*:._.:*~*:.

And welcome back, Barry G.! Sounds like you had a great time.

hondohurricane, sorry to hear that your rotator cuff issue doesn't seem to be making any progress toward healing. Hopefully, the cortisone shots will at least give you some pain relief.

I did the puzzle online at the Mensa site, and there were no circles. But it didn't detract from the enjoyment of the puzzle. I rather liked finding the STUFFED SOLE in all the entries after I was done.

I have to chuckle because I read the clue for 27D as "Bathtub pooper." Remember seeing this commercial on Johnny Carson? 0:59

I also had a WAG at the crossing of HENRI and ALFRE. I have even seen that painting at the MoMA, Hahtoolah. But for the life of me, I couldn't remember his first name!

Have a great day, everyone!

Argyle: Thank you for a nice write-up & informative links.

The circles were properly placed in my Tampa Bay Times.
Can't really say they added to my enjoyment in solving today's offering.
I'm probably out AT SEA as to whether this was a cleverly themed puzzle.

Hand up for needing only 5 perps to get ALFRE.

Happy Birthday to Lemonade & Vidwan.
I'm sure "toasts" will be made in your honor.
Cheers!!!

Good morning everyone.

Never heard of a SOY CANDLE, but I'm not into that kind of stuff anyway. By then I had sussed the theme and was writing in SO……LE in all the remaining circle pairs. STUFFED SOLE was apt. Argyle described BILGE well. Thought the clue was kind of stiff. Liked WOBEGON; I listen to G. Keillor whenever I can.
Funny how words like ÜBER get into our language.
Good job, Gail and Bruce. Thank you.

Happy Birthday Lemonade.

Happy Birthday, Vidwan

Hope you both do something special today.

Have a great day.

Nice to see Barry again, on the top of his form.
Hi Hah !

The puzzle was relatively easy ... Except for ALFRE. Thought of Bill G. at bilge . Lol.

Since a Rupee in any of the SE asian nations, in any currency, is worth about less than one US cent, .... They stopped printing one rupee currency notes, 15 years ago. It's so rare now, that a one rupee currency note now costs twenty rupees. How's that for inflation ?

Welcome back, Barry; hope you recover from jet lag soon.

Now, the puzzle. Clever theme and just enough bite to make it a fun solve. Only write-over was Otos before Utes. Nice shout-out to Kazie and CED, I think!

Thanks, Gail and Bruce, and thanks, Argyle, for the usual neat expo.

Ferm, how is Charlie?

Have a terrific Tuesday.

Oohh! Circles! I got excited as soon as I saw the puzzle this morning, and I was not disappointed. Found it a total delight. Many thanks, Gail and Bruce, and you too, Argyle, for the neat expo!

Loved the theme. My husband was a fabulous cook and after he had me over to dinner the first time, I was totally intimidated about reciprocating. So I suggested an informal pizza evening. Turned out he had pizza for lunch every day and would prefer a "real meal." What to do? Turned out that Trader Joe's had a frozen STUFFED SOLE with very clear directions. Voila! I passed the dinner test and later the marriage test and we eventually joined three Gourmet Clubs in our area. So I love STUFFED SOLE.

I also love Betty White in "Hot in Cleveland"--a total hoot. Also, has anyone seen her new program about senior pranksters called "Betty White's 'Off Their Rockers'"? Another hoot.

Happy Birthdays, Lemonade, Vidwan, and Montana.

Have a great Tuesday, everybody!

Yea! Circles! I love them.

Thank you, Gail and Bruce, for today's speed run with some fun clues. I SEWed up the eastern border very quickly, straight down the side to the bottom.

Seeing the theme reveal, I went around and filled the SO_LE and was done in almost no time. The "stuffing" was fun.

Really enjoyed:
have a bawl, WEEP
pay dirt, ORE (a good oldie)
Pisa place, ITALY

I'm surprised so many haven't heard of ALFRE Woodard. She is a superb actress who has starred in many TV roles.

I also like Lake WOBEGON and listen anytime it's possible.

Hey Argyle! While your personal Natick was at 48D/61A, mine was 47D/61A. Also, I did have a little trouble with the parsing of the theme (I thought it was Opera...O sole mio...)

28A requires edification... (however, I still prefer "your shout" to "my shout.")

28D I wanted to link an Alec Guiness tribute, but he just has so many wonderful performances that I decided to just link the one (& 1st)role I saw him in that made him beloved to me... The Man In The White Suit.

Note that the sound of "the contraption," is imprinted in my brain. (which may explain some of my links..)

Today's puzzle is a great technical accomplishment, but not that high on the fun scale. there may be a trade off there. Circled themes don't do a lot for me.

I've loved Betty White forever. Don't know Hot in Cleveland. My niece just left there for Raleigh, really.

Guess that's all for now. See y'all tomorrow.

Happy Tuesday. Haircut day for me. Happy birthday to Vidwan and Lemonade! I hope your special day is special.

I enjoyed the puzzle that included words like BILGE and GOT COMFY. So Vidwan, should I be pleased that BILGE made you think of me?? :>)

Gary, I know what you mean about those dimes. Locally, a dime will buy you five minutes at a parking meter. Thirty dimes will get Jordan and me a Looney Tunes comic featuring Yosemite Sam.

When I saw what Google had done recently, my head literally exploded! Look at the second definition they added for "Literally."

1) In a literal manner or sense; exactly.
"the driver took it literally when asked to go straight across the traffic circle"
synonyms: exactly, precisely, actually, really, truly; without question, unquestionably, indisputably

2) Used for emphasis or to express strong feeling while not being literally true.
"I have received literally millions of letters."

Aargh! So now it's OK to use "literally" to mean "not literally"?

Puzzle: harder than a usual Tuesday. I DNF and took a nap instead. It was the NW corner that could not finish – or even get most of. But it was clever, and I even figured out the SOLE. But it didn't help enough.

CED, I enjoyed your Naples pics and comments. You'll be moving here soon, yes?

Hola Everyone, First, C.C., thanks for all the great pictures. Happy Birthday, Vidwan and Lemonade, and Darlene, lucky granddaughter, lucky you!

The puzzle was pretty much a fast one for me today. I had one hangup as I put in the Phoenix Sens. instead of Suns. That was quickly fixed with the unifier of Stuffed sole.

Barry, You were in our home town--San Jose. The Coven would loved to have met you, your wife and son. Maybe next time. You were truly all through our territory. Sounds like you had a good time.

The puzzle circles were all in the correct places in my paper. I did have a ? moment when the circles has SOS then LEE and then it hit me that the word Sole went from Top to bottom and Left to Right. Took me a while.

I had 30 people for dinner on Sat. and Sun. was pretty much a wash as was yesterday. I'm finally back on track--I think. I'm getting too old for these big dos.

Since school has started my organizations are all back in full swing, so busy times ahead.

Have a great day, everyone.

Do any of you have external computer speakers? I have some old ones that might need replacing. They plug into the wall for power and into the computer's headphones jack for the signal. The new ones (Logitech) I saw at Target seem to only plug into the computer. Is that right? Just plug into the computer and they get all their power from that? The subwoofer plugs into the computer and the other two speakers plug into it. Thoughts or advice?

G'Eve all!

HBT Lemonade & Vidwan! Glad your back Barry G!

I REIGNed over this puzzle until I got to the Texas area and SAW 47a & d. I had to hit the Google for the latter. The STUFFEDSOLE became apparent. But a fun puzzle from Gail & Bruce (I say it like I know them, right?) and Argyle for the fine writeup.

WOBEGON was my fav. I listen every Sat during my chores.

Bill G. I would double-check those speakers. It sounds like they're USB and you may not be pleased with the setup (new drivers) and quality. My $0.02.

Also, Literally it's fugurative.

Cheers,

I vote for "goodness sakes" as opposed to "goodness sake" Simply for the alliteration. It sounds smother to me.

Good evening all,

Gail and Bruce rock! I'm not a fan of circles, but didn't need them to swim thru this one. Sole is my least favorite fish since we had it most Fridays growing up..blah..bland. The only 2 I didn't know were amati and Elka, although I did watch Hot in Cleveland a few times in its 1st season. Too silly for me.

Alfre Woodard is such a fine actress I'm surprised that she hasn't taken larger roles. The spelling of her name had me waiting for perps.

HB to our twins. Hope you both had a great day!! We can see that you did, Montana...very cute grand daughter. No little girls in my future..just superheroes and ninjas..oh, and pirates.

Has anyone read Beautiful Ruins? Sure does jump around. A new character slides in with each chapter.
