Morning, all!

This one started out as a typical speedy Monday but didn't stay that way for long. I paused briefly at 5A, but figured out the trick there pretty quickly. And then I hit the cross referential cluing at 11D, which slowed me down a bit more. And then I ran into ICHIRO, ASICS, NICK FALDO and KNOLL, and things just sort of ground to a halt while my brain went on a brief vacation...

I did manage to eventually get everything thanks to the perps. Never did figure out the theme, though. I got as far as realizing that every theme answer ended in the letter "O", but I completely missed the "K" component. Ah well...

Good morning!

Theme? There was a theme? No, I didn't get it until Argyle explained it. Thanks, Argyle. This one was a bit more al dente (MOLAR TOOTH) than a typical Monday. But it came with a STRAW and a SODA to make up for it.

JD, congrats on your latest relative. He's a hefty guy.

For those of you who enjoyed finding the "bean" among the beans in CED's link, here's another. See if you can find the cat. I'll tell you that it's not a caricature, it's a real cat, and its entire body is visible. Good hunting! And C.C., thank you for posting it for me.

Good Morning, Argyle and friends. Today is Monday?? Ouch! I thought this was tricky theme and difficult puzzle for a Monday. There were a lot of crossword staples, but a lot of non-Monday words, too. Nothing really jumped out at me, though.

I never heard of ASICS before.

Congratulations, JD for your new grandson!

And for Argyle, here's today's BITTER QOD: I never forget, I never forgive. I can wait. I find it very easy to hold a grudge. I have scores to settle. ~ Tom Wolfe (b. Mar. 2, 1931)

Good day everyone,

Agree with Argyle and Barry, a tough Monday. I got through it OK, but needed a lot of reliance on perps.

As usual, never figured out the theme, but not knowing it didn't make it any tougher either.

Am I the only one who thought of Jack Nicholas before NICK FALDO appeared? Had forgotten Sir Nick won the Masters three times. I think Jack won more then three, but I didn't bother looking it up.

Long weekend doing card show and long drive back and forth is my KNOCK OUT PUNCH. Long time since I've been this spent.

Today's our 52nd. Heading to Block Island tomorrow for a few days. Good beaches, excellent emporiums, & lots to ogle. I might even get a little sleep too.

Talk to you this weekend.

Doing Across and Down together the answers were the first words that popped into my head with no WAGs, except for three or four in the SW.
ASICS appeared on its own from all the crosses. I never heard of it.
In the SW I knew NIP IN, IRENE, IRON ON, PERON, IN ALL. I had NI---ALDO. So I "WAGged" NICK which quickly led to CORAL, KNOLL and NELLY, then lastly, IF ONLY.
JD congratulations on the new arrival, two darling little boys.
Hondo and DW, happy anniversary . Enjoy the beach. The cooler weather today should make it just right.
BECAUSE is such an unsatisfactory answer to why. As a kid, I found, "Because I said so," even more unsatisfactory.

Good morning all. Another scorcher awaits in the long winded city. Supposed to be 90+ and another high dew point. But first thing first.

Very nice puzzle Billie Truitt.

Argyle, when I got to the grid spanner and solved it, I paused to look back at 17 and 25 across. Nothing was readily apparent, so I moved on. A few minutes later and this puzzle was down on the mat and the referee was counting to ten.

Never heard of NELLY Furtado and Hillock is a new word to me, but the perps resolved both.

Argyle, you are sorry about what ad ?

Desper-otto, I got the cat in just over 2 minutes; slightly longer than it took to find the face in the beans.

CC, to answer your early morning question... I can make the girl spin either way by shifting my focus away and then back.

Hondo, Happy Anniversary !

JD, Happy Addition ! That's a big boy.

WBS about the theme. Totally figured out the puzzle, but still didn't get the theme, since I was just looking at the ends of the second words, not the first words, felt like a Wednesday or Thurs.
ASICS was a gimme for me, as they mostly have running shoes and everyone (but me) runs in my family. We have stacks of ASICS and MIZUNOS in my mud room.

kazie said...

It tells you something when starting at the NW, the first thing I got was BODEGA--a word from a foreign language I've never studied. I agree with Argyle, there is something about the clues today that gave me the feeling I just wasn't quite there for a Monday. I didn't know some of the names, but not nearly as many as I felt I was missing. Other than that, my only misstep was STROKE/BOTTER, which it never occurred to me to rethink before I came here.

The theme significance only partly made sense to me because I was only looking at the second word of each, seeing the "O" and thinking it was the hole left when you use a hole punch.

Congrats to JD on another fine looking grandson!

Abejo said...

Good morning, folks. Thank you, Billie Truitt, for a swell puzzle. Thank you, Argyle, for the fine review.

Really had no problem with this puzzle. A few unknowns that I perped. Such as ICHIRO, BODEGA, NELLY, ASICS

Theme was fine. Got it after I finished.

Cruciverb had no puzzle today, so I went out and got the paper.

D-O: I could not find the cat. I will try again after a while.

JD: Cute new baby. I am sure everyone is proud and happy.

Hondo: Happy Anniversary. 52 is a long time, but I am sure it flew by.

Off to my day. Much to do.

See you tomorrow.

JD, thanks for the pictures of the grandsons. Grandchildren are great!

Hondo, Happy Anniversary!

As I was working this puzzle, I thought I would not even post today. Who has a DNF on a Monday?!?!? I kept plugging away though, across and down, and I did finish it, but it was a struggle. What does that bode for the rest of the week?

I know next to nothing about golf (serious golfers don’t live in MT; weather doesn’t cooperate.)
ABBR, ROAST (could only think BAKE-didn’t fit), MALT (for SODA), EAT (for TRY), TEEM, STDS, BODEGA, BRIER, DDE (for IKE), gave me troubles.
But I hung in there and prevailed. Read Argyle’s blog before I looked for the theme so missed it.

I watched Ichiro play during the summer of 2001 in Seattle. I bought an Ichiro necklace. No idea what ever happened to it. I have seen the cat picture before. Took me awhile back then, but spotted it easily today.

Have a good day, everyone,
Montana

Thank you Billie Ttruitt for a nice and crunchy Monday puzzle. Enjoyed it very much.

Thank you, Argyle, for your always dependable blog and your nice comments.

Congratulations, JD for another cute, hale and hearty grandson.

D-OTTO I found the cat. It was more difficult than the coffee head, which was easy. I used to think that having one working eye may be a disadvantage but maybe, perhaps, not so.

SPOLIER ALERT, it is at (x,y) at (15%, 45%).

Hahtoolah, I find, at my age, it is much better to let go of grudges right away. I will always remember one of your earlier QOD's which I find is more appropriate and applicable to the tenets of my life ....

"If you bear a grudge against someone - you let him stay, RENT FREE in your mind - and needlessly occupy it. - perhaps, forever. "

I have a small nit - I did not realize that coral could also be used to refer to an area of an the ocean - say like a reef. I used to think that coral was just the genus of the marine invertebrates ..... and their colonies.

Have a nice day, and a nice week, you all.

Good morning all,

Had a difficult time getting a toe hold at the top. Bodega was all perps and abbr. didn't come to mind for awhile. I also thought of Nicholas, but Bo Peep said otherwise.

Since I had nip in, I had Telly instead of Nelly. Thanks for pointing out the theme... Never saw it.

Thanks for the nice comments . It will be so nice to have a baby around again.Won't be long before Dylan is rough housing with his brother and cousins.

Loved watching Mickelson win the British Open yesterday. Somehow just being back there and seeing the course made it more fun to watch.

In order to be able to read the Blog, I have my PC screen zoomed in 150%, & I noticed that with the spinning girl on the same screen, about 4 paragraphs down is the word "addendum." If you focus on the word addendum, it is easier to see the girl spinning either way.

found the cat on the 3rd pass, that's a tough one.

Happy Anniversary Hondo!

Good morning Argyle, C.C. et al.

Boy, it's a good thing you pointed out the theme - I could not even made a WAG as to what it was, even with the revealer and going back and looking at each theme answer. I'm not "in" to boxing, so I wondered what on earth a RADIO punch or HERO punch might be. But I knew I had never heard of a FALDO punch!! (That gave me my first hint to look elsewhere for the theme...still couldn't see it, though!)

On the other side, the puzzle seemed pretty easy, if a bit crunchy for a Monday in spots. Nothing perps couldn't help with, though.

Congratulations on the new grandson, JD! And happy Anniversary, Hondo! Have a great day at Block Island - it really is a neat little place.

Good Morning:

Horrors of horrors! A Monday FBI, (finished, but incorrectly) had Ichuro/Asucs instead of Ichiro/Asics. Never heard of Asics. Had to use pen and paper today as Cruciverb is on vacation somewhere. I didn't get the full theme until reading Argyle's cogent expo. Otherwise, what Thumper said.

Happy Anniversary, Hondo; have a wonderful time on Block Island.

Congratulations, JD, on your newest grandchild.

DO, I found the cat in a little over a minute; I guess my eyes are sharper than my brain this morning!

Another nice day so far, but t-storms are predicted for later.

G'Morning All!

Thanks Bille for the fun pzl and Argyle for the write up.

I got the theme early after ink-over for REWORd/K. The theme aided with all the names in the SW. With NIPIN, I WAG'd NICK, leading to IRENE.

Hands up for malt instead of SODA, but(t) ASS was a gimme.

What body-of-knowledge does 47d come from?

Abejo - use zoom & scroll about - you'll see the cat in 15 seconds.

VID - QOD much better fits with my quest for Zen. Like Assisi's (sp?) prayer... Change what I can, accept what I can't.

Congrats JD & Hondo!

This is my 1st attempt at posting with an account. I'm still working on the the avatar.

CED, Our Super Duper Archive Videographer ------ I finally located your link for the spinning girl picture - in yesterday's blog. Not only did I see her spinning in both ways, err, directions, very easily - but on reading the article, I realized ;

A) I don't need protein for my brain. On with the surplus carbs.

B). I am ambi-dexterous 'dominant'. Is there such a thing as a Gay Brain ??

C). I need to stop focusing on women, and get on with my life ....

(although, it would have nice, if there was some color on the spinning girl, and some detail - ).

Further to the QOD that Hahtoolah provided, in consonance with one of today's clues :

I never forget, I never forgive,

I have not long to live ......

Well, the blog was a great relief this morning because this puzzle was a toughie, and after a rough Thursday, Friday, and Saturday last week, I wondered if my solving days were going to start getting shorter. But Argyle put me a bit at ease, and I missed the ICHIRO/ASICS cross like Sallie, Lucina, and others--making me feel I was not alone. And, surprisingly, I did get the theme, though it took me a few minutes to figure out how it worked. Anyway, tough start to what's going to be a tough week for us anyway. But thanks for the comfort, everybody.

I could have sworn BRIER was spelled BRIAR. I got it because of EPEE, but still. Live and learn.

Adorable baby, JD, and Happy Anniversary, Hondo.

I decided to check out ASICS as I knew nothing about them. The name is an acronym for a Latin phrase "anima sana in corpore sano" or, sound mind in a sound body. It's a Japanese company and they are quite pricey at over $100 per pair.

I won't be buying them anytime soon.

Avg Joe said...

WEES. Pretty tough for a Monday, but did manage to get it done. Knew enough of the names to stay out of trouble, including Ichiro and Nelly. Like Misty, I thought briar was misspelled, and Johnny Horton apparently agrees. And like Tin, the theme seemed a bit meh, but I did figure it out after taking a minute to think.

Finding that cat was a toughie. At first I worked on the premise that cats like to be as high up as possible, so I thought it was in the upper right corner. After a few more looks I finally did find him. Clever!

Hi Y'all! A puzzle on my wavelength, yay Billie! I didn't get the theme without Argyle's great help. But I filled this baby in with seeing only one red-letter the whole trip: an "A" in BRIER. Only unknown: ICHIRO.

MOLAR TOOTH: I just made an appointment to have one filled before I came to the blog.

Dennis, I can't wait to hear your rant. In the meantime, I have one of my own. (This happens every year and I guess I have had enough because not only will I not renew my membership, I cancelled both my car and homeowner insurance policies which were through AARP sponsorship. And I saved money, to boot.)

However, O magazine out- chutzpah's AARP by a mile. Saturday, I received an invoice for renewal of my subscription that doesn't expire until SEPTEMBER, 2014! O is getting cancelled, too.

End of rant.

HG - I envy you; with the Spring we had, I don't think we will see any local tomatoes until November! A little exaggeration, perhaps, but I'm sure we are in for a long wait.

Hola Everyone, Pretty much a speed run, except for the fact that I misspelled Ichiro (Ichero), so Asics was wrong. I have never heard of that brand of sneakers. I don't buy many pair these days and don't have to buy for young people anymore.

So a DNF for me today with that wrong spelling. I didn't get the theme until I read Argyle's write up. Oh well! I always learn something new every day. This was my learning moment today.

Congratulations on your anniversary, Hondo. Enjoy your trip. It is lovely to get away for a relaxing few days.

Thanks Lucina for the info on the sneakers. I won't be buying any of those soon, either.

Irish Miss, What annoys me even more about the renewal of magazines is the fact that now some renew you automatically and you have another year added on when you haven't authorized this. They say that you authorized this when you signed up with them for multiple years. But I prefer to know when my subscription is up and renew or not depending on the circumstances at the time. I've cancelled two magazines just this past year as a result of the auto renewal "clause".

Yellowrocks said...

I'm not good at the find the cat thingy.

BTW, from last night, I did find out how to change ALL CAPS to lower case.
Highlight the all caps passage or word.
Press shift F3 once, all lower case.
Press shift F3 again, only first letter of the words is in caps.
Press shift F3 again and you are back to all caps.

PK thanks for understanding.

Irish Miss, I get those months early renewal notices, too. What irks me more is that I have one that automatically renews and I should get one bill. I get months of notices, regardless, and even worse I get weekly renewal calls by phone. Arrgh!

Irish Miss & Chickie: Since we're ranting today... Every now and then I order a book from America's Test Kitchen. But both times that it's happened, I've responded to their confirmation email, and they've agreed to take me off the preview list. Maybe it's just me, but I hate that type of marketing.

Irish Miss said...

Chickie @ 3:54 - That is precisely what O magazine is pulling but I deliberately paid for the original subscription by check, so they cannot charge a credit card automatically. I had problems with both Ichiro and Nick Faldo. I tried Mickelson for Falso but it never fit. Ha!

I couldn't get 5A Abbr fooled me It was the last to come.

When I turned my computer on I saw the Royal Baby has arrived. A boy at 8 pounds 6 ounces. That's a good size for a first baby.

Have a good evening all!

HAH!! JD's grandson has it all over the new royal baby, by a whopping 3 oz!!

Marti, thanks for letting me know about the BRIAR/BRIER double spelling. Makes me feel a bit less dense--really helpful today!

Nick Faldo was a gimmee for me because he works as a golf announcer and is a favorite of mine. He played in the British Open the first two days, but didn't make the finals cut this year. Don't think he competes much anymore but would qualify for this.

I went back and watched the Sunday taped coverage even though I'd seen Phil's last shot and knew he'd won. I was curious how things had changed so drastically from Saturday. Sure a nail-biter. Phil's golf angel had to be helping with those shots. He's such a congenial guy, I have to cheer for him.

Irish Miss - Main purpose of the trip was to help celebrate oldest grandson's 14th birthday. Thanks for the good wishes.

Irish Miss@4:13 -- Maybe I dreamed this, but I think something happened to the AnonyMouse profile, and those posts are now being labeled Vidwan827. Maybe Vidwan will confirm or deny.

Hi gang, just checking and saw JD's new grandson, congrats JD!

My wife and I finished today's puzzle without any online help.

I'm surprised no one posted:

Wouldn't it be nice a classic hit from the Beach Boys?

DO @ 5:15 - I believe you are correct. Why I forgot that, I'll never know. Thanks for the heads-up. Sorry, Vidwan.

Good evening, everyone! Thanks for the great Monday eye-opener, Billie. And thanks for the swell write-up, Argyle.

WEES said about this one being a bit on the crunchy side for a Monday. Got it done, but scored a “swing and a miss” on the theme. In the days before spell-check, I was lucky to catch the TYPO in estate documents I typed which would’ve left everything to the testator’s surviving SOUSE instead of his surviving spouse – Yikes! DH’s late aunt used to make cheesecakes that were TO DIE for.

Congrats on the new grandson, JD – he and big brother are just precious. Happy 52nd Anniversary, Hondo; hope you and your lovely wife have many more.

Finally found the face in the coffee beans (thanks, Lemony), so now I’ll take a crack at the spinning girl. Have a great night, all!

Hi again,

Thank you all for your congrats, but the heroine of this celebration is Lucy. She put up with a lot of stuff over the years and always kept her positive outlook and constant smile. I AM A LUCKY GUY'

Tin, you would love Block Island. It's always five o'clock, PM! Admittedly, I'm out of (drinking) shape, so I could be in for a whole lot of "whatever".

Riley Damn near knocked me over getting out of the car at the kennel. He met a gal..Chloe...on his last visit and I suspect he's anxious to get reacquainted, even though he is out of business.

Be in touch Friday or Saturday. Have a great week and no DNF's.

I had actually selected a much nicer QOD, but Argyle's commentary indicated that BITTER just cried out for a QOD.

JD, your Dylan sure is a delightful charmer. So adorable.

JD, congratulations on the grandson! You and the Queenie both!

Hondo, very excellent! I am looking forward to the photo you are going to send CC.

The TV has been almost alive with attractive women. Last night on 60 Minutes, Lara Logan. And this afternoon, Catherine Zeta-Jones. Since it's said that good things come in threes, who will grace my TV next?

JD said...

LOL! Bill, I bet the Queenie isn't the cuddly type.Ya think?

Desperato@ 11:16. THANKS! That was the flower I was visualizing, not a mound.

Chickie, I order our mags. thru NEA, so much cheaper and they keep track of what I've ordered and when. They send out a reminder, not like the annoying ones from the mag. companies. They certainly waste a lot of $$ sending out bogus renewal notices.

Asics: our youngest daughter started running 1/2 marathons a year ago and switched from New Balance to Asics. She's not a big spender usually, so they MUST feel good.

Warren, good song!

Today's Jeopardy! contained a reference to Mary Anning who is the subject of the book, Remarkable Creatures, by Tracy Chevalier. It's a wonderful story about a real person who was one of the first to recognize the importance of fossils.

It was our Book Club's latest selection.

This is in response to the spinning girl. (7/21/13) I could see her spinning clockwise and counter-clockwise. Fascinating!

HRx - thanks for pointing out my TYPO - I saw right after submit..

Hohtoola - Just ribbing re: QOD.

Irish Miss - You made me double-check my Anonymous spelling (mouse?). Thanks to D-O for getting me square.

Where is Keith? I owe my handle to him!

Cheers,

Aren't we all waiting for Dennis' rant? Imagine we are an 'August' group and it is only July.

Congratulations J.D. and Hondo. I saw Charlotte every day this weekend and was with them at the beach Sunday when she had her first encounter with waves. So far the pool is ahead.
